‎Barrie Pitt military historian. Two Typed Drafts of a biographical account of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. One with autograph emendations.‎

‎Neither with place or date stated. Both items in good condition on yellow paper. Apparently written as an entry in a work of reference but no evidence of publication discovered. ONE: Later draft. 10pp. 4to. Single spaced. Begins: 'ROOSEVELT FRANKLIN DELANO was born on January 30th 1882 the only son of James and Sara Delano Roosevelt. His parents were millionaires - but not multi-millionaires so that although he was to be expensively educated and comfortably brought up he was never subjected to the dynastic pressures which were often applied to the heirs of vast fortunes like those of the Morgans the Vanderbilts or the Rockefellers.' Concludes: 'Dictatorship is only possible when the executive is superior to the legislature; democracy's guard is the inviolability of constitutional law. As Roosevelt himself said when he first assumed the highest office in his native land "The Presidency is pre-eminently a place of moral leadership". It was in this spirit that he occupied it.' TWO: Earlier draft. 13pp. 4to. Double spaced. With autograph emendations in blue ink throughout including the addition of the final line. Neither with place or date stated. unknown‎

‎Tania Long [Tania Long Daniell] (1913-1998), American journalist and war correspondent [E V Knox [Edmund George Valpy Knox] (188‎

‎Tania Long of the New York Times writes from wartime London on 'queue psychology' in Britain and America. Typed Letter Signed 'Tania Long Daniell' to Punch editor E. V. Knox in connection with an article being commissioned from him.‎

‎On letterhead of the London bureau of the New York Times Savoy Hotel London WC2. 24 May 1943. Long's obituary in the New York Times 6 September 1998 describes her as 'war correspondent for The New York Herald Tribune and The New York Times who covered the London blitz and the Nuremburg trials' and 'one of only a few women who were correspondents in World War II'. She had joined the New York Herald Tribune's London bureau in 1941 and subsequently married Raymond Daniell chief of the New York Times's London bureau joining that newspaper as a reporter in February 1942. An interesting letter indicating that the United States adopted the practice of queuing at a surprisingly recent date. 1p. 4to. In good condition lightly aged. The letter begins: 'We're delighted to hear that you will write the article on “queues†for us. Mr. Markel i.e. Pulitzer Prize winning editor Lester Markel 1894-1977 has naturally set no time limit by which the piece is wanted but I know that he is eager to get it as soon as possible in view of the sudden apparition of long queues on the domestic scene in the United States. Would two weeks suit you' Markel has requested 'a humerous sic article on the general theme of queues' and Long notes that 'There certainly seems to have developed a “queue psychology†in Britain during the past couple of years – a subject full of fascinating possibilities'. She refers to a recent Punch cartoon on the subject. She continues: 'I don't suppose queueing sic has gone quite as far in the United States yet nor are we as a nation quite as patient or polite about such things. Nevertheless I'm told that in Washington particularly people have to queue up at the station for taxis just as here and I've seen references to queuing in shops etc.' The final paragraph discusses the editorial arrangements. In fair condition lightly aged and worn with traces of mount and red wax seal adhering to the reverse of the second leaf which is franked the franker's name and signature illegible to 'Sir John Phippart sic &c &c No 8 New Burlington St'. The letter which concerns a contribution to that journal by Dundas begins: 'Dear Sir I shall send in a few days another conclusion to your journal which I think you will deem better worth insertion than my foregoing one. It contains the battle of Fuentes and some matter immediately succeeding'. Dundas hopes that Philippart will find room for the piece in the number for March and explains that it will take at least as much space 'as the Artle you mention to be in the Jany No and which has not come to hand'. In a postscript he asks 'If it is not a secret Pay who is binded whose opinion in my respects coincide with mine' Falkirk. 11 January 1832. unknown‎

‎Lord Hankey Maurice Hankey 1st Baron Hankey Secretary of Lloyd George’s War Cabinet. Typed Letter Signed ‘Hankey’ to T. Lloyd Humberstone regarding a book he is working on and pressure to ‘cut out all reference to my diary’.‎

‎11 June 1954. On letterhead of Highstead Limpsfield Surrey. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The recipient Thomas Lloyd Humberstone 1876-1957 was a prominent member of the Convocation of the University of London. The work referred to in this letter is probably Hankey's 'The Supreme Command' the two volumes of which would be published in 1961. 1p 4to. In fair condition lightly aged. Folded three times. He is returning his letter and ‘its interesting enclosure’. Not having had any experience of the Central Office of Information he is left with the impression ‘that they are not very well informed on questions of Military Organisation’. What Humberstone says about his book ‘is an encouragement but it is not much use my making the attempt under the present regime’. He refuses to ‘cut out all reference to my diary which they wished for General Smuts who with Lord Lothian and with the strong approval of Lloyd George was the instigator of my efforts gave me the strongest advice to reject this suggestion’. He has no doubt ‘the book will be published one day’ and would like to ‘carry it on to the period between the wars and World War II on which I have done some work’. 11 June 1954. A valuable artefact of the American War of Independence: a leaf from a British War or Colonial Office ledger detailing payments to officials in General Leslie’s administration in Carolina in 1782. Among many details are references to the Loyalist units the North Carolina Highlanders and New York Volunteers as well as to Colonel Probart Howarth Governor of Fort Johnson and to Colonel de Benning Friedrich von Benning Commander of James Island where one of the last Battles of the war at which Kosciuszko was nearly killed would take place a few days after the entries those of the entries in this ledger. 1p folio. On one side of a leaf of laid paper with fleur-de-lys armorial watermark. Worn and slightly discoloured with closed tear along central fold line repaired with archival tape. The leaf is evidently part of a ledger. It is numbered 19 and headed ‘99 / Extraordinaries in North America’ with the payments being to ‘David Thomas Esqr / Carolina’. The sums involved are substantial: the opening balance brought forward is for £214908 11s 9 1/2d and the closing balance to be carried forward being £216710 7s 7 1/2d. The leaf has been neatly ruled in red with columns for ‘Warrants’ subdivided into ‘by whom granted’ and ‘Dates’ details of payments and sums paid. The ten payments nine of them dating from 10 October and the last one from 11 October 1782 are all on warrants granted to ‘Lt. Genl. Leslie’. The first six entries are highly detailed and the seventh to the tenth are additions to the sixth. First for £111 5s 0d: ‘Paid Capt. John McKinnon Depy. Quar. Masr. Genl. witht. dedn. being his Pay at 10s/. a day & Pay for Lieutts. Rankin & Bard as actg. Depy. Quar. Masr. Genl. at 5s/. a day from 1st. July to 30th. Septr. 1782. also for Lieutt. Condner from 1st. July to 17th. Septr. 1782 at 5s/ P day’. The second for £39 17s 4d: ‘Paid Lt. John Reeve of 82d Regt. of Foot witht. dedn. being Pay for himself as actg. Quar Masr. at 4s/8d. Pr day. & for Mr. Mc.Pherson as Actg. Adjt. to said Regt. at 4s/- Pr. Day from 1st. July to 30th. Septr. 1782’. Third for £155 13s 8d annotated ‘1 Warrt. at Audrs. Office’: ‘Paid Lieut Edwd. Scott Secy. to Genl. Leslie being for Money paid by himself to Coll. de Benning as an Extra Allownce during his Command on James Island from 16th. Mau to 6th Octr. 1782’. Fourth for £31 1s 10d: ‘Paid Ensn. Robt. Mc.Pherson being Pay for Captn. McRa. late of the North Carolina Highlanders at 5s/- Pr. day & for Ensn. McKay at 1s./10d. Pr Day from 25th. Septr. to 24th. Decr. 1782.’ Fifth for £502 16s 8d: ‘Paid Captn. Willm. Johnson Paymts. to the New York Volunteers being their Pay from 25th. Augst. to 24th. Octr. 1782’. Sixth £405 18s 4d: ‘Paid the followg. Civil Officers of South Carolina being an Allowce. made to them by order of the Lords Commissrs. of His Majesty’s Treasury all witht. dedn. Vizt. Honble Willm. Bull Esqr. Lt. Govr. from 5th. July 1781 to 10th. Octr. 1782’. Seventh for £88 15s 10d: ‘Honble. Thos. Skoltow Esqr. Secy. from Do. to Do.’ Eighth for £180 19s 2d: ‘Honble Thos. K. Gordon Esqr. Chief Justice from Do. to Do.’ Ninth for £31 14s 1d: ‘Jas. Johnson Esqr. Clerk of the Crown from Do. to Do.’ Tenth for £253 13s 11d: ‘Col. Probart Howarth Govr. of Fort Johnson from Do. to Do.’ In 1826 advantage was taken of the blank reverse of the leaf which was evidently torn out of the ledger at this point when three sets of itemized commissary accounts were given after ‘Stock taken Sept 1. 1826’ the sums involved in one case hams bacon butter and other items totaling £10000 5s 7d. It was then folded four times into a packet dated ‘Sept 1. 1826’. See Image. 10 and 11 October 1782. [London, War Office? ‎Ronnie Tritton [Ronald Edward Tritton] (1907-1990), War Office Publicity Officer 1940-1945 [his wife, nee Andrina Frances Schwed‎

‎Ronnie Tritton War Office Publicity Officer. Two Autograph Letters Signed 'T' and 'R.' to his wife Andrina written during the 'Phoney War' writing with evocative immediacy about Claridge's the Savoy and a host of friends and acquaintances.‎

‎One: 12 September 1939. On letterhead of White's gentleman's club in St James's Street London. Two: 'Wed.' no date but 1939. On letterhead of the Savoy Hotel London. Tritton was educated at Winchester College and in later life held the office of High Sheriff of Essex. He served as War Office Publicity Officer between 1940 and 1945 the first civilian to hold the post. The present items exhibit the candour and evocative immediacy for which his wartime diaries were praised on their publication in 2012. Two long letters to 'Darling' both 2pp 4to. Both in good condition lightly aged and folded twice. ONE signed 'R.': Thirty-eight lines of text. He is writing her a second letter of the day prompted by boredom and the want of something else to do'. He finds White's 'full of uniforms of all kinds. . As is natural when I come in here so rarely I feel rather like a new boy at school . . . . . and very out of everything. London is like a tomb and I shall go rapidly nuts if you cant come back to keep me company. If you do you'll probably be driven by sheer boredom to work at the W. V. S. or something.' He refers to 'Maurice' and 'Diana' and to 'Dickie' with whom he is dining at Claridge's: 'He's pretty low. He's doing night duty - on all night trying to keep the place darkly curtained. Claridge's has as many people in the house as the Savoy - about 90 - which for Claridge's is quite good.' He names among the 'unusually distinguished guests' at the Savoy the Duke of Westminster Lionel Montagu Lord Trenchard. There follows a piece of casual anti-semitisim: 'Your father's pal somebody Morgan is playing billiards at my elbow with a funny looking little Hebrew. Lord Tennyson very much the Colonel in rather new Khaki is at the other end of the writing table . . . . very fat and pompous. Duff Cooper drinks at the bar. I must say they do make good cocktails here . . . . . .' He gives news of the reopening of the Savoy Restaurant 'Its high time'. He ends in the realisation that he has 'very little taste for masculine company' an observation prompted by 'the groups of men here' and which 'doesn't promise very well for the next few years . It's time to go up to Claridge's. TWO signed 'T': Thirty-seven lines of text. On Savoy letterhead. Tritton was on a retainer at the Savoy where he counted David Niven among his friends. He found 'walking back from Claridge's at 11 o'clock at night . an eerie experience. London was muffled as in a fog and black as death. It was a lovely starry night so the town took on a faintly luminous look. It was rather lovely and much what it must have looked like 200 years ago.' He refers to a lunch with 'John' at the Clarendon Hammersmith Broadway. 'John looked well and seems perfectly happy and fatalistic about it all.' He is 'billeted in an old Railway carriage at Wormwood Scrubbs guarding an important junction. All his pals - Frankie Lawton etc. are with him. Evelyn Laye does their washing Its a curious affair. All the privates are gents and the officers very common and rather offensive Bank Clerks. One of the privates - and apparently a great friend of Johns is Lord Elbury an A.D.C. to the King! Even he can't get a commission. Its a funny war what with Peter cleaning out the latrines and all. How like the Govt. to have its trucks washed in petrol.' Reference to a forthcoming dinner with 'Ewan returned yesterday from Copenhagen' and 'Lucy' who has 'joined the army again': 'so I should get some first hand information about Germany'. References to 'Harold Snagge' and 'Billy Gavin'. 'Lionel Dodds has got a lovely job - Press liason officer to some part of the Air Force. He is quite highly ranked and presumably gets good pay and is in a safe job. I think he's off to France tomorrow though he was very mysterious about it all.' He ends with 'love to you and Pauly' their son Paul Sebastian Tritton born 23 February 1939. One: 12 September 1939. On letterhead of White's [gentleman's club in St James's Street, London]. Two: 'Wed.' [no date, but 1939 unknown‎

‎Velters Cornewall Berkeley (1754-1804), Royal Navy officer who served in the American War of Independence and the French Revolut‎

‎Captain Velters Cornewall Berkeley RN. Autograph Letter Signed as captain of HMS Emerald requesting that the Commissioners of the Navy will pay the company of HMS Juno who have been ‘turned over’ to the Emerald.‎

‎‘Emerald Nore the 12 Decr 1795’. At the time of writing Berkeley’s newly-constructed HMS Emerald had just completed her coppering and fitting-out at Woolwich. Sailing to join Jervis’s Mediterranean fleet within less than a year she would be involved in controversy. Following the Battle of Cape St Vincent 14 February 1797 in which HMS Emerald was too lightly built to take part the victorious Jervis sent Berkeley off with a squadron of five ships in search of the disabled Spanish flagship Santisima Trinidad. On 20 February Berkeley declined to engage when he sighted her under tow. This decision was widely criticised and there were calls for Berkeley’s court-martial. Two months later on 26 April 1797 HMS Emerald was cruising with the Irresistible off the Spanish coast when they captured two enemy frigates one of which sank at sea. 1p folio. In fair condition on aged and worn paper with slight chipping to corners and edges. Addressed to ‘Principal Officers & Commrs. of HMs. Navy’. Reads: ‘Gentlemen / His Majesty’s Ship under my Command having arrived here this day I have to request you will cause the necessary Steps to be taken for the Payment of the Company of His Majesty’s Ship Juno who have been turned over to serve in the Emerald as soon as possible as I am in hourly Expectation of receiving Orders to proceed to Sea - / I am / Gentlemen / Your humble Servt / J. Cornewall Berkeley’. Docketed on reverse: ‘12 Decr. 95 / Captn Berkeley / Emerald / desires he may be paid’. Also on reverse: ‘Will the Board please to Order the Juno’s Pay Books which were paid in Tower to be forwarded to Shearness. sic / P. H. / 14 Decembr.’ and the following with the initials of three commissioners ‘Let the Books be sent accordingly / CH Captain Charles Hope Deputy Comptroller of the Navy 1795-1801 JH John Henslow 1730-1815 Surveyor to the Navy 1784-1806 GM / Acquaint Captn’. ‘Emerald, Nore, the 12 Decr 1795’. unknown‎

‎‘Wasp Portsmouth 1st. Decr. 1775.’. Bligh’s entry in the Oxford DNB does not note his service on HMS Wasp to which he was appointed in October 1774. According to one authority the ship ‘saw service out of Passage County Cork Ireland from November 1774. In October 1775 Bligh brought sixty volunteers from Ireland into Plymouth and in June 1776 sailed from Portsmouth to Plymouth with money for the dockyard artificers. Towards the end of August the Wasp arrived off the Devonshire port with ten transports bound for North America and she then sailed for Ireland.’ Built in 1749 the 8-gun sloop the Wasp was sold off by the Royal Navy in 1781. In 1784 under the name Mentor she was a slave ship. Good bold signature on letter of 1p 4to. In fair condition on aged and discoloured paper with wear to corners and closed tear along the two postage folds. The letter reads: ‘Gentlemen / Yesterday I Lodged at the Clerk of the Checks Office at this Port to be forwarded to your Board One Monthly Book for September & October 1775 for His Majesty’s Sloop the Wasp under my Command which please to Acknowledge the receipt off to Waterford in Ireland as I shall sail for that place in a day or two. Illustrations facsimiles. Original printed paper wraps spine chipped split and partially perished. Colección Alvaraz Martinez Cadilla stamps throughout else clean internally. A good copy.

Very uncommon memoir from the innovative 20th century Puerto Rican artist Julio Tomás Martínez 1878-1954. Martinez studied art architecture and engineering working in all three fields in Arecibo. Martinez set himself apart from most Puerto Rican artists of the time with his interest modern idioms incorporating symbolism surrealism and futurism into his works. He was married to writer and artist Maria Cadilla and the two established an art academy in Santurce San Juan.

This book includes sections on the Spanish American War and represents one of the few published memoirs of a Puerto Rican civilian on that topic. Martinez describes the role his hometown of Utuado played in the 1898 conflict and describes the American military campaign against Spanish forces on the island.

This book has a significant association being presented to then Senator and later President of the Senate and Secretary of State of Puerto Rico Kenneth McKlintock b. 1957. We can't identify the signature but it is likely a child or grandchild of Martinez and Cadilla one of their daughters having married into the Alvarez family.

OCLC cites just 6 holdings of this important text from an influential figure in early 20th century Puerto Rican history and culture.

.
