"LEON GAMBETTA": A RICHLY TONED WOODBURYTYPE OVAL PORTRAIT of the French statesman LEON GAMBETTA who opposed the 1851 coup d'etat and played a prominent role during the Franco-Prussian War.
Lock and Whitfield circa 1875. 1875. Very good. - A richly hued 4-1/2 inch high oval woodburytype portrait of Leon Gambetta mounted onto 11-1/4 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide stiff cream stock. A light gray printed decorative frame highlights the image. The subject's name is printed in the same light gray centered within the lower half of the sheet. "Lock and Whitfield" and "Woodbury Process" are printed at left and right along the lower edge. There is a light vertical crease in the mat and a tiny stain to it's right edge. Very good.
The French statesman Leon Gambetta 1838-1882 was admitted to the bar in 1859 and the Conference Mole in 1861. In 1868 Gambetta was selected to defend the journalist Delescluze who was being prosecuted for promoting the erection of a monument to Baudin who'd been killed resisting the 1851 coup d'etat. Gambetta used the occasion to both attack the coup d'etat and the government. He was elected to the assembly by both a district in Paris and one in Marseille. Initially opposing the war with Prussia he gradually came to accept the patriotic line and called for strong measures following the disaster at Sedan. It was he who proclaimed the deposition of the emperor at the corps legislatif and the establishment of a republic at the Hotel de Ville. As one of the first members of the new Government of National defense he became Minister of the Interior. When the delegation to organize resistance in the provinces failed Gambetta set off in the "Armand-Barbes" a coal gas-filled balloon to take control as minister of the interior and of war in Tours. With his assistant secretary of war and the young officer of engineers Freycinet Gambetta organized an army which might have successfully relieved Paris if Metz had not fallen. He later faded from politics after his republican party was defeated by the conservatives and monarchists.
Both a printing process and the print which it produces Woodburytype was invented and patented by Walter B. Woodbury in 1864. A photomechanical process Woodbury type prints are made from exposing a dichromate-sensitized sheet of gelatin to UV light shining through a photographic negative. Each area of the gelatin hardens to a depth in proportion to the amount of exposure to the light before it is then soaked in warm water. The relief image is then pressed onto a sheet of lead to create an intaglio metal printing plate. Lock and Whitfield, circa [1875]. unknown

Very good. - Daniel Adams Butterfield's signature as treasurer penned on a 2 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide piece of paper clipped from the bottom of a typed letter. The close signed by Butterfield as treasurer apparently called for the recipient of the letter to return a document or letter "to the Treasurer in envelope enclosed herewith". Folded twice else very good.
The New York businessman Daniel Adams Butterfield 1831-1901 served as brigadier general in the Union army during the Civil War. While recuperating from wounds sustained at Gaines' Mill Butterfield revised the Scott Tattoo thus composing the bugle call "Taps" which is played at the end of military funerals and to signal "lights out". As Hooker's chief of staff he was later embroiled in his commander's political feuds with Burnside and Meade. Butterfield was wounded at Gettysburg and subsequently served in Sherman's Atlanta campaign. He went on to serve as Assistant Treasurer of the U.S. under Grant but was forced to resign when he abused his position to manipulate the price of gold. unknown

Schwimmer, Rosika (1877-1948). Hungarian-born Feminist & Pacifist leader who was denied US citizenship for her opposition to war
TYPED LETTER BOLDLY SIGNED by the Hungarian-born Feminist & Pacifist ROSIKA SCHWIMMER making mention of Henry Ford's 1915 Peace Ship expedition which she initially led.
Chicago: July 20 1923. 1923. Good. - A one-and-a-quarter page letter with over 325 words typed on 2 sides of her 11 inch high by 8-3/8 inch wide light blue "4740 Dorchester Ave. Chicago" stationery. In her letter to the American lecture agent James B. Pond the noted feminist & pacifist Rosika Schwimmer outlines her intention to offer a lecture on Henry Ford's role in the Peace Ship expedition she led in the early years of the First World War a timely subject as Henry Ford was then campaigning for the Presidency. "Though numbers of Ford biographies and articles have been poured out none of them contains more than a hint about his peace efforts in 1915 Peace Ship and Neutral Conference." She goes on to explain that she is not proposing to "make a propaganda speech for or against him but merely to give the facts about a highly picturesque venture. It certainly would help the public to make up its mind what attitude to take in Ford's coming presidential campaign." Schwimmer also tells Pond about the subjects of other lectures she can offer listing 6 of them. Boldly signed in full on the verso with a couple of corrections in her hand. Folded for mailing with a few short tears to the bottom and to the edges of the folds reinforced with clear archival document tape from the verso. There is a horizontal crease along the top with a perforation to the top left.
The Hungarian-born leader in the international pacifist and feminist movements Rosika Schwimmer 1877-1948 was a leading advocate of women's rights in Hungary. Schwimmer campaigned against child labor and for marriage reform and birth control. Her Hungarian Feminist Association succeeded in passing woman suffrage laws in 1920 Hungary. Living in London when the First World War was declared she traveled to the United States to convince President Woodrow Wilson and William Jennings Bryan to sponsor a neutral mediation conference. Unsuccessful she traveled the US speaking to a wide range of constituencies including feminist and Jewish groups. Creating the Women's Peace Party she convinced Henry Ford to sponsor a Neutral Mediation Conference in Stockholm. Setting off on the Oscar II which became known as the Peace Ship the American delegation was ridiculed by the press and suffered several setbacks. Several delegates resented Schwimmer's overbearing authoritative approach and supposed financial mismanagement and Henry Ford withdrew his support. She served as Hungary's minister to Switzerland during its brief existence as a democracy but fled after Bela Kun's communist party took over. Returning to the United States in 1921 she was shunned by those who had once supported her and had difficulty obtaining speaking engagements. A Chicago federal district court denied her application for American citizenship as she would not "bear arms in defense of the country" due to her pacifist convictions and because she was an advocate for a form of World government. The district court decision was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court but with a dissent from Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. The first reason for denying her citizenship is laughable considering her advancing age and that women were not then expected to serve in combat. She remained in the US as a resident alien until her death and was awarded a privately sponsored World Peace Prize and subsequently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948. Chicago: July 20, 1923. unknown

Grey, Henry, 3rd Earl Grey (1802-1894). English Statesman who served as Secretary of War from 1835 to 1839
A 4-PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by HENRY GREY REGARDING THE 1871 NEWCASTLE LABOR STRIKE FOR NINE HOUR DAYS.
Northumberland August 5 1871. 1871. Good. - Octavo 7-1/8 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide. Over 300 words penned on all four sides of a folded sheet of creamy white paper with the address embossed in blind at the top of the cover sheet. Replying to a request for his assistance in working out a solution to the strike by engineers in Newcastle seeking that limits be placed on the hours they are required to work each day: "I also yesterday received a letter on the same subject from Mr Lowthian Bell - In answer to his letter I told Mr. Bell that I would be very glad to do anything in my power to assist in bringing the unfortunate strike at Newcastle to a close but that I fear that nothing that I would do would be likely to promote that object & might even tend rather to increase than to diminish the existing irritation between the employers & the employed." Earl Grey asks if the recipient might have some "arrangement to propose for the settlement." which might help him decide if he should get involved in the negotiations. He mentions in closing that he will be traveling over the next several days culminating with his being "compelled to go to London to vote against the ballot bill". Signed "Grey". Folded twice horizontally the letter was once mounted or tipped-in to a book with remnants of paper adhering to the top edge of the last page not affecting the text. There is also a tiny piece of dark paper near the lower center of the last page which does not touch on the text.
The "Nine Hours Strike" began in August of 1871 when engineers in Newcastle upon Tyne and adjoining areas requested that working hours be limited to nine hours a day. The bitter strike was prolonged when employers refused to talk and brought in foreign workers in an attempt to break the strike. Though there were a few incidents of violence many of the foreign workers soon realized that they were being used to support a system of industrial slavery and would lose their jobs anyway once the strike was resolved. The strike went on for 14 weeks before employers finally compromised and granted the strikers' request.
The Ballot Bill to which Earl Grey refers proposed that parliamentary and local elections in the UK take place by secret ballot. The Bill was passed in 1872.
Also known as Viscount Howick the English statesman Henry George Grey 3rd Earl Grey 1802-1894 entered parliament in 1826. His father became Prime Minister when the Whigs came to power in 1830 and Earl Grey then Viscount Howick was made Under-Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. Aligned with colonial reformers he resigned in 1834 when the emancipation of slaves was made to take place gradually instead of immediately. He became Secretary of War when he entered Lord Melbourne's cabinet in 1835 and made significant administrative reforms. He again resigned in dissatisfaction in 1839 and gained a reputation for crotchetiness. He supported free trade and as colonial secretary a post to which he was appointed in 1846 was the first minister to proclaim that the colonies should be governed for their own benefit and not for that of Great Britain & Ireland. As much as possible he accorded them self-governance. He was however soon embroiled in the turmoil and discontent brewing in Ceylon the West Indies and New Zealand. He authored several works on political subjects and policy including an 1888 work on the state of Ireland and one on the United States tariff. Northumberland, August 5, 1871. unknown
