Washington DC: Government Printing Office n.y. Poster. Folio 17" X 24". Near fine. Slightest bit of faint wear. An exceptionally bright and handsome example of this "War Savings Stamps" all-text poster printed in black letters within a blue borders on white stock. A second smaller blue margin near the bottom bearing the small oval "Torch of Liberty" logo at upper left corner notes: "W.S.S. / War Savings Stamps / Issued by the / United States / Government." The War Savings Stamps program was a United States Treasury Department patriotic endeavor to raise funds during World War One and Two by selling interest-earning ten and twenty-five cent stamps primarily to school children. A superb copy bearing none of the folds and edge tears usually found on these -- a rare survivor in near pristine condition. Government Printing Office unknown

The Soldiers' Friend" so called because of his advocacy of Civil War veterans and their needs was a merchant and Democrat turned Republican politician who served New York as representative 1853-55 1857-65 governor 1865-68 and senator 1869-75. Large bold "R.E. Fenton" in brown ink heavy stock 3½" X 2¼" card n.p. n.y. Very good. Faint age toning; mounting traces on verso. A handsome example. Accompanied by an outstanding 1860s vintage steel-engraved portrait heavy stock 5 3/4" X 9½" engraved by H.B. Hall of New York. Near fine. Titled "Eminent Upholders in Congress of the War for the Union" in ornate rolling typeface along the lower margin this depicts twelve notable Congressman head-and-shoulders portrait each within a small oval. Three ovals occupy the center the topmost being Fenton. A striking war-date image and superb signature example. unknown

This German-born Union general was a man of vast accomplishments: U.S. minister to Spain senator from Missouri secretary of the interior editor of the "New York Evening Post" and more. Bold strong signature typical "C. Schurz" 2½" X 1¼" slip n.p. Very good. Mild age toning with paper clip rust mark at upper left touching upon the "C." An appealing war-date example of this extraordinary figure's signature with "Maj Genl." penned beneath it and another rather illegible line bpenned beneath that may read "Dec. 23d 1863". Schurz was raised to the rank of major general in March 1863 which would make this possible 1863 date logical. Accompanied by an outstanding 1860s vintage steel-engraved group portrait entitled "Defenders of the Union" along the bottom heavy stock 6" X 9" n.p. n.y. Twelve superb individual portraits each within its own oval decorative frame with Rosecrans at upper center and Sigel Weitzel Meagher and other Union generals surrounding him -- Schurz at upper right. Near fine. Quite handsome. War-date Schurz are encountered far less often that post-war examples. unknown

Vintage photograph 2¼" X 3¼" tipped to heavy stock white-bordered beige bevel-edged 4" X 5" card n.p. 1900 July 15. Very good. Handsome image of this obelisk monument commemorating the 21st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry's contribution at the Battle of Chickamauga signed boldly by photographer Tillinghast in ink in the margin at lower right. On the verso he pens bold and large: "Monument of / 21st Wis. Infantry. / Chickamauga. / paraph / Taken on the battle / field by A.R. Tillinghast / July 15 1900." Whether Tillinghast was a professional or simply a talented amateur we have not been able to ascertain but this warrants further research. Quite handsome and unusual. unknown

The namesake son of the Florida senator and Confederacy's Secretary of the Navy 1812-73 himself served in the Confederate Navy then was elected Florida representative 1891-95 and senator 1897-1907. Printed DS 1p 8" X 3 3/4" Pensacola Florida n.y. likely 1897. Near fine. Lightly age toned. Printed receipt noting "RECEIVED of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Park Commission one copy of its Atlas of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga battlefields" boldly signed by the new senator "Hon. S.R. Mallory" in thick brown ink also noting his address as "Pensacola Fla." Congress first printed this commemorative volume in 1897 thus dating this signature; it sold well enough that a second printing of 4000 sets appeared in 1901. An attractive piece. unknown

This Democratic senator from Rhode Island 1851-57 was an engineer and machinist and developed a promising new projectile called the "James projectile"; while a major general in the Rhode Island State Militia in 1862 his invention was being demonstrated at Sag Harbor New York when one of his shells accidentally exploded killing him. New York: Kimmel & Forster 1865. Lithograph. Approximately 21" X 26. Very good. Lightly evenly age toned; blank margins either trimmed or edgeworn for the cream mat goes to the image edge at the top and sides while the bottom includes the full title line mat opening 23" X 18¼". First edition. Magnificent allegorical lithograph issued by the famed New York print publisher who also produced a companion piece entitled "The End of the Rebellion in the United States 1865." A large figure of Columbia stands at center atop a huge splitting rock looking to the viewer's right and clutching a waving flag in her right hand; meanwhile her other hand wags a pointing finger toward the viewer's left side. At her feet lie a whip and open shackles representing the abolition of slavery. To the viewer's right stands Abraham Lincoln and indeed the entire right side represents the Republican cause. A stern General Winfield Scott stand behind Lincoln and a crowd of young men strain forward some offering up bags of gold some bearing arms all willing to join the cause; a woman in the foreground covers her eyes and is comforted by two children. The background on this side is horizon of mountains and a glorious sunrise. On Columbia's other side stands the figure of Justice without her usual blindfold raising up her scales in one hand and sword in the other glaring angrily toward all those at the left side of this hectic scene. James Buchanan's sleeps blissfully at the edge of the split rock while next to him crouches his secretary of war John B. Floyd -- who was charged with corruption -- eagerly scooping up gold coins into a large sack. Further back Jefferson Davis clutching a ripped U.S. flag and Alexander H. Stephens stand beside a palm tree with a huge snake coiling up its length and spitting at the scales of justice. An angry cluster of soldiers swirls around them. The background on this side is grim and muted with battle scenes. A superb handsome example of this famous Civil War allegorical print. Kimmel & Forster unknown

Allenby. illus. hardback sm 4to in illustrated paper covered boards: Good some wear @ spine ends; bottom corners are bumped; antique bookplate on pastedown; else a nice clean complete and tight copy; illustrations and text are in very good or better condition A wonderful piece of World War One memorabilia that includes 20 handsome color plates and many other photographs and drawings; the editors note that this is a "Soldiers' Book produced almost entirely by soldiers in the field under active service conditions to send to their friends in Australia and abroad." This particular copy was sent to a lady in Edinburgh by a soldier. The editors were Sir Henry Somer Gullett 1878-1940 who accompanied Australian forces to the Near East as a captain and official military historian. He became director of the Australian War Museum and later a government cabinet minister who died spectacularly in the so-called Canberra air disaster of 1940. Prolific writer and journalist Charles Leslie Barrett 1879-1959 went to Egypt with Australian forces where he edited a couple of military publications.</p> Sydney: Angus & Robertson hardcover
