‎[MAXIMILIAN I OF BAVARIA] / [THIRTY YEARS WAR] / STENGEL, Georg‎

‎Gloria Bellica Serenissimi et Potentissimi Principis Maximilliani .‎

‎Ingolstadii: Ex officina typographica G. Haenlini 1623. Hardcover. Near Fine. 4to 27 x 17.5 cm. 17 ff. 388 pp. recte 386 7 ff. with misnumbered pages at pp. 203-06 243-46 and 260-71 1 full-page engraving 20 x 15.5 the platemark. Bound in contemporary blind-stamped pigskin raised bands boards beveled somewhat scuffed clasps missing. Blue edges small hole repaired on half title and engraving ownership inscription of Andechs Abbey on title page minor browning in some quires. An excellent and unsophisticated copy. First edition of a rare volume of prose and verse glorifying the military exploits of the Prince-Elector Kurfürst of Bavaria Maximilian I 1572-1651 by members of the University of Ingolstadt as compiled by the Jesuit philosopher-theologian Georg Stengel 1584-1651. The Gloria Bellica is an important witness to the intertwining of princely power university politics and religious sectarianism at the onset of the Thirty Years War 1618-48. Published in the year of Maximilian's elevation to Prince-Elector 1623 the book seems to have been an attempt by faculty at Ingolstadt to secure his favor. The increasingly Jesuitical university would be frequently imperiled during the flux of the war and quickly identified Maximilian himself educated by Jesuits as an important military protector. Maximilian's central role in the German Catholic League had been essential in checking the power of the Protestant Union. The volume is especially notable for its full-page prefatory engraving executed by the Augsburg artist Daniel Manasser a highly detailed and elaborate allegory charting Maximilian's martial rise and the praise conferred on him from various secular and sacred sources. Merchants clerics Liberal Arts herself and a throng of lesser citizens crowd together to salute Maximilian as he rides upward on the back of Pegasus toward the Olympian gods reclining in the empyrean; the demigod Hercules mediates between heaven and earth while battling Nessus and the Lernaean Hydra. Flanking Maximilian's ascent are 8 groups from whom he receives "Gloria": his enemies his commanders and soldiers muses and scientists hometown Bavaria the Catholic League the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I the pope and church and indeed Mary Christ and the saints. The text of the Gloria Bellica is arranged as a fuller version of this scheme with 20 chapters each detailing a source Maximilian's glory. OCLC identifies U.S. copies at Harvard Trinity CT Georgetown and Chicago. ‎(PATRIOTIC COVERS -- CIVIL WAR)‎

‎Collection of "U.S. Naval Expedition" Patriotic Envelopes‎

‎12 covers each 5½" X 3" New York NY n.y. Near fine. Unused and with faintest of age toning only and original gum present. Exceptional complete set printed entirely in brown ink by Charles Magnus at 12 Frankfort Street in New York. Undated although Steven R. Boyd in his "Patriotic Envelopes of the Civil War: The Iconography of Union and Confederate Covers" dates it to August 1861. While most of the dozen feature naval ships prominently in the middle ground or foreground often with groups of soldiers not sailors! in various activities only two covers actually depicts naval battles at sea and the final three covers depict infantry soldiers battling with no apparent nautical references whatsoever. A fascinating grouping seldom found complete and in uniform outstanding condition. unknown‎

This copy bears a fine autograph addition as well: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Dannett 1p 5½" X 7" Scarsdale NY 12 April 1966. ‎The Life of Billy Yank: The Common Soldier of the Union -- The Life of Johnny Reb: The Common Soldier of the Confederacy‎

‎Garden City: Doubleday & Company 1971. Hardcover. Complete 2-volume set. 8vo. Burgundy cloth with gilt spine lettering dust jackets. 454pp 444pp. Frontispieces. Good plus/very good. Jackets slightly edgeworn with large chip on second volume at head of spine; both book spines a bit rubbed and lightly soiled and bottom page edges somewhat darkened. A tight and decent reprint edition of these classic 1952 Billy Yank and 1943 Johnny Reb texts which James I. Robertson Jr. in the Nevins bibliography rightfully calls "the encyclopedia for army life of the men in blue" and "equally authoritative work for the men in gray." Contains a choice autograph addition from Wiley 1906-80: Tipped to the front flyleaf of "Billy Yank" is a Typed Document Signed 1p 7¼" X 10½" Atlanta GA n.d. 5 December 1970 penned on verso in recipient's hand. Near fine. On letterhead of "The National Historical Society" listing Wiley as Chairman this letter is his annual mimeographed Christmas letter sent to friends and family a lengthy detailed single-spaced recording of the year's events: Trips across the country and overseas his wife's health issues etc. all quite interesting. On the generic "Dear Friends" opening Wiley crosses out "Friends" and pens "Arnold above this and at the letter's close he boldly signs "Bell" in blue ballpoint. Along the blank top margin he adds a handwritten postscript to recipient Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar: "I enjoy your book column in Lincoln Herald. Congratulations on the well deserved degree! Hope our paths will cross again! Bell." A fairly nice set of these classics bearing a unique and interesting author letter. NEVINS I 178. ‎SWIGGETT, Howard‎

‎The Rebel Raider: A Life of John Hunt Morgan‎

‎Garden City: The Garden City Publishing Co 1934. Hardcover. 8vo. Blue cloth. 341pp. Frontispiece illustrations map endpapers. Very good. Faint edgewear; light glass ring on front board. Reprint of the Bobbs-Merrill 1934 first edition -- tight and nice -- but an unusual hybrid printing that differs from the "regular" Garden City printing in several ways: Title page is partly in red as the original edition with the Bobbs-Merrill imprint the only indication of Garden City Publishing at the foot of the spine; the 8 7/8" height is that of the original edition not the usual 8 3/8" of the reprint edition; blue cloth is that of the reprint edition not the green cloth of the original edition; copyright page bears 1934 date of later Bobbs-Merrill printings no "First Edition" slug not the 1937 date of the reprint edition; and this edition has a frontispiece and illustrations whereas the regular reprint has only map endpapers and neither frontispiece nor illustrations. Presumably Garden City acquired unbound sheets from Bobbs-Merrill and simply put their own binding on them with their name noted at foot of spine; once these were depleted they produced their own edition with their name on the black-only title page and the smaller format. These hybrids likely predate the routine Garden City printing. This copy also bears an interesting addition: Tipped to half-title page is a 4" X 4¼" heavy stock steel-engraved head-and-shoulders portrait of Morgan in uniform likely a high-quality modern reprint of a Civil War-era image. As Robert W. Johannsen critiques "The author is critical of Morgan and his reputation; he maintains that the General suffered increasing mental disintegration during his last days." NEVINS II 93. ‎Confederate Wizards of the Saddle: Being Reminiscences and Observations of One Who Rode With Morgan‎

‎Dayton: Morningside Bookshop 1979. Hardcover. New introduction by E.B. Long. Small 4to. Red paper over boards with white lettering. xxii 633pp 5pp ads. Illustrations maps. Fine. A tight and pristine facsimile reprint Facsimile 48 of the 1914 first edition reviewed by James I. Robertson Jr. as "A necessary source for any study of Confederate cavalry operations in Kentucky and Tennessee." This copy bears fine autograph addition: Tipped to inner flyleaf is a Typed Letter Signed from E.B. "Pete" Long 1919-81 1p 8½" X 11" Laramie WY 1978 January 11. Addressed to noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93. Near fine. On "University of Wyoming" letterhead Long commiserates at length with his friend about the Lincoln book "The Lincoln Conspiracy" whose outrageous untruths and inaccuracies had the serious Lincoln scholarly community up in arms -- so much so that Gates long-time literary editor of the "Lincoln Herald" resigned his position there in protest since the publisher of the Herald Lincoln Memorial University gave the authors of this "expose" honorary degrees! Reads in part: "Just when we thought that The Lincoln Herald was under capable hands Gerald McMurtry is gone and you have been forced to resign. It is a sad day. How the people at LMU could have given honorary degrees to the so-called authors of this trash is more than I can fathom. I saw Ralph Newman in Chicago this November and I can only describe his attitude toward their actions as 'furious.' It is all inexplicable disheartening and discouraging. To try for historical accuracy to have principles to follow good historical methodology is quite beyond these charlatans who turn out such profitable junk." Signed simply "Pete" in blue ballpoint. ‎LONG, EB E B‎

‎The Saints and the Union: Utah Territory during the Civil War‎

‎Urbana: University of Illinois Press 1981. Hardcover. Small 4to. Blue cloth dust jacket. xiii 310pp. Illustrations map map endpapers. Near fine/very good. Minor jacket edgewear. First edition tight and superb of this study showing how "While the Civil War raged in the East the Mormons in Utah Territory zealously continued to guard their cultural identity and church practices from federal control." The half-title is inscribed and signed boldly by the author in blue ballpoint: "Inscribed for Charles Wesselhoeft / a fine student of / our past. / Best Wishes / E.B. 'Pete' Long / Chicago / March 1981." Wesselhoeft 1917-2002 was a noted member of the Civil War Round Table of Chicago. This inscription though dated simply "March" actually dates to Monday March 30: the day before Long's death at the age of 61. Long had attended a Civil War Round Club meeting that night -- at which event this book which was officially released that same day was signed and inscribed -- the only book signing held for this title. For this reason signed copies rarely surface -- only the second time we've encountered one having handled dozens of unsigned copies. Laid in is an Autograph Letter Signed from Long's wife Barbara 1p 5 3/4" X 7½" Laramie WY 1981 August 18. Same recipient. On pale grey letterhead she pens a gracious thank-you. In part: ". I have been inundated by over 400 letters & have had to resort to answering them alphabetically -- otherwise I couldn't keep track of who had been answered. I sometimes still have trouble believing it's true -- It hasn't been easy but I can here Pete telling me to be brave and carry on & try to make a meaningful life along. It is difficult to find that meaning but I am trying -- I still feel as if I'm existing in a strange & terrible dream." With original envelope. DORNBUSCH IV 2104. EICHER 953. Above this appears Stevenson's large rubberstamped ownership signature. Laid in is an 8½" X 14" mimeographed sheet presumably published by Harcourt Brace -- a group of blurbs about this book from various notables Allan Nevins Clifton Fadiman etc. Strode draws an arrow alongside the bottom blurb by Van Allen Bradley and across the top pens "Page 6 from 7 pages of 'comments' gathered by Harcourt Brace." ‎KEILY, Daniel J (1829-67)‎

‎Autograph Note Signed‎

‎This Union officer served on the staff of Brigadier General James Shields whose troops faced Stonewall Jackson's Confederate troops in the Shenandoah Valley in June 1862 and later commanded the Second Louisiana Regiment Cavalry; he was a good friend of famed Irish soldier Miles W. Keogh 1840-76 killed in the Battle of the Little Bighorn who served under him in the Papal Army during the Italian rebellion in 1860 and who fought with him in the Battle of Port Republic; he's reported to have become enamored with famed Southern spy "Belle" Boyd" at one point and to have unwittingly revealed military secrets to her. Outstanding pencilled ANS 2pp recto and verso heavy stock 4" X 2½" card "Conrad's Bridge" Virginia n.d. ca. early June 1862. Addressed to "General" probably James Shields. Very good. Lightly age toned. In this remarkable small report Keily reports in a small tight but fairly legible hand to his commander that "Col. Carroll moves his comm'd. at p.m. and will push on as rapidly as possible some cannonading heard this morning in the direction of Harrisonburg I would respectfully submit that if the Infantry did not move rapidly enough to carry out your views at Wainesborough before Jacksons arrival there a reconnaisance composed of cavalry conducted cautiously might attain the object with a good Guide which we have procured I would be glad to undertake it -- respectfully" and signs off adding his rank "Capt. A.D.C" beneath. A rather light challenging to transcribe postscript reads "P.S. Just received information from a reliable source that Jackson has --- --- --- Train on the --- Pt. Republic Road." It's difficult to precisely date Keily's note but General Shields did write General McDowell on June 4 1862 that "Colonel Carroll. after a forced night's march reached Conrad's Bridge this morning at 5 o'clock which bridge he found burned" -- which likely dates Keily's letter from this date or shortly after. Whether Shields took Keily up on his offer to lead a cavalry reconnaissance is unclear. Shields 1810-79 is perhaps best remembered as the Illinois politician who almost fought a duel with Abraham Lincoln in 1842; he's also the only person in American history to serve as U.S. senator from three different states Illinois Minnesota and Missouri; as a brigadier general of volunteers in the Civil War his lackluster performance as commander of the 2nd Division of the V Corps in the Army of the Potomac during the crucial Valley Campaign caused him to resign his commission. On June 9th the Battle of Port Republic took place a costly Confederate victory in which Jackson's 6000 troops faced off 3500 Union troops losing just over 800 men to the Union's loss of just over 1000 men -- a battle at which Keily himself was severely wounded in the face while leading a charge of Ohio cavalry up a hill into a barrage of Confederate artillery fire. The following year after painful recuperation Keily ended up on the staff of General Charles P. Stone in New Orleans recruiting cavalry troops in that occupied state. Late in the war he was court-martialed for "conduct unbecoming an officer" but the charges were shown false and by the end of the war he was brevetted a brigadier general. Keily died from yellow fever in Louisiana at age 38 shortly after the war's end making his autograph material quite scarce -- and a choice war-date item such as this most desirable. This remarkable war-date communication sheds interesting light on Shields as commander during the disastrous Valley Campaign. unknown‎
