POWELL, George May (1835-1905)
Autograph Letter Signed
This noted U.S. Treasury Department statistician was an entrepreneur who created a composite photograph of signers of the amendment abolishing slavery that proved quite popular; he was also an inventor archaeologist social reformer philanthropist and evangelist who created cartographic maps of Egypt and North Africa for the Oriental Topographical Corps. ALS 1p 8½" X 10 3/4" n.p. n.y. August 29. Addressed to Giles F. Ward in New York City -- possibly father of Giles F. Ward Jr. 1845-65 a lieutenant with the 12th New York Cavalry who was accidentally killed by a colleague while in North Carolina. Very good. Penned on ultra-thin onion-skin paper with occasional burn-through from heavily-inked letters. Reads in part: "I write this. to request that you will favor me with your own opinion freely expressed as to what the price of the Lincoln Cot should be the patent either on a joint stock operation or on sale in the other way you spoke of a simple sale of the right Please let me know what in your judgment it should be even though it be less than 1/10 the proposed figures" Boldly penned in rich brown ink. Powell and two others one of whose last name was Lincoln designed this specialized portable cot in 1862 and sought to interest the U.S. Army in providing it to the troops. A fascinating piece. unknown

TEILLARD, Dorothy Lamon (c 1859-?)
Photograph Signed
The daughter of one of Abraham Lincoln's law partners and his presidential bodyguard Ward Hill Lamon 1828-93 she pieced together and edited her father's book "Recollections of Abraham Lincoln 1847-1865" Chicago 1895; a bawdy and not particularly popular companion to the president Lamon authored it was actually ghostwritten an 1872 "Life of Abraham Lincoln" that's considered the first debunking biography of the president. PS 8½" X 11" n.p. 1945 November 4. Very good. Small glue stain at upper right well away from image. This most unusual PS does not depict Teillard herself but rather is a thermofax copy of a 3½" X 3½" portrait of a young Ward Hill Lamon centered and with large margins. Early head-and-shoulders portrait showing a youthful Lamon with long curly hair and flowing goatee. On the ample lower margin his daughter inscribes it big and bold: "With regards of / Dorothy Lamon Teillard / November 4 1945." Though written while well into her 80s Teillard's script is fluid and attractive. A quite uncommon autograph in an unusual form. unknown

MOREFIELD, Thomas W (1850-?)
Autograph Letter Signed
Supposedly the youngest soldier to enlist in the Civil War; others such as Johnny Clem born 1851 the "Union Drummer Boy of Chickamauga" were indeed younger although Clem did not carry a weapon until later was not officially mustered in and his wages were paid out of donations by the officers. Morefield's credentials therefore appear sound. ALS 1p 8" X 10" Elkhorn WI 1892 March 10. Addressed to W.E. Ambler. Near fine. Slight mailing folds. To a journalist or scholar researching Morefield's claim to fame Morefield transmits a photograph "Coppied from a tin tipe that I had taken soon after I Enlisted" not present. He agrees to "write up my Army Experience I dont know jest what you want do you want to know whare the Regiments went and What we went through I will say this much to you if it hendent of been for the Exposure of Camp life and picket duty and Rheumatism and diseases resulting from Rheumatism that I contracted while In the Army my Experience would been a good one." (CIVIL WAR : VERSE BROADSIDE)
Battle of Cedar Creek. By Horace Maynard Co. E 28th Iowa Volunteers. Tune "Star-Spangled Banner." Caption title
New York: J. Dickson Printer 1864. Broadside in 4to. 310 x 235 mm. 12 x 9 ¼ inches. Caption and ten stanzas of verse in two columns within an ornamental border. Sheet somewhat dust-soiled with a few minor stains surface wear along folds one corner slightly chipped &c. Still entirely sound and with good margins. The Battle of Cedar Creek was fought in the Shenandoah Valley on October 19 1864. Surprised by the Confederate forces under the command of Jubal Early the Union troops were nearly routed. Riding to the battlefield from Winchester twenty miles away Gen. Philip Sheridan rallied the troops and carried the day. This action occasioned the slightly more famous poem by Thomas Buchanan Read. Private Maynard's poem centers more narrowly on the actions of the 28th Iowa. The regiment was organized in 1862 and mustered out in 1865 having fought campaigns in Mississippi Louisiana and Virginia losing 271 men in the process. "At dawn October 19 1864 the Confederate Army of the Valley under Lt. Gen. Jubal A. Early surprised the Federal army at Cedar Creek and routed the VIII and XIX Army Corps. Commander Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan arrived from Winchester to rally his troops and in the afternoon launched a crushing counterattack which recovered the battlefield. Sheridan's victory at Cedar Creek broke the back of the Confederate army in the Shenandoah Valley. Lincoln rode the momentum of Sheridan's victories in the Valley and Sherman's successes in Georgia to re-election." Horace Maynard born ca. 1821 in Ohio is listed in the 1860 Federal census as a school teacher in Penn Iowa residing there with his wife and three small children. American Battlefield Trust Website. Kansas Historical Society Enrollment of Civil War Veterans 1889. Note cited in OCLC. National Park Service Website. . J. Dickson, Printer unknown

WORLD WAR I EPHEMERA -- AIRCRAFT
Silhouettes dAvions. Illustrated manuscript on paper in French With: French World War I Colonels Ledger an autograph note c. 1899-1904 and transcribed letters of 1914 from a certain E. Henry while stationed in Lorraine
France early 20th century. WWI ephemera -- aircraft. Silhouettes d'Avions Illustrated manuscript on paper in French. France: c. 1915-1925. 16 leaves pocket-sized: 135 x100mm. 15 hand- colored illustrations depicting three views of planes; two in profile and one birds eye view all are labeled for early French English and German aircraft models. Original paper wrappers titled Silhouettes dAvions with later tape reinforcing hinge; somewhat brittle leaves loose but present. This skillful manuscript perhaps created by a younger person as an admirer of the craft represents sixteen popular models of biplane and monoplane patterns. This interesting piece of ephemera is inextricably linked to the three great European production centers of World War I-era aircraft: representing France England and Germany. World War I was the first walrus in which aircraft were deployed on a large scale. The sky had become another battlefield no less important than the battlefields of land and sea. Initially planes were used mostly for reconnaissance over the North Sea and strategic bombing raids. Then at the onset of war pilots and engineers learned from experience and developed many specialized models; including fighters bombers and ground-attack airplanes. These evolving flying machines were recognized to be not just toys but weapons. In addition fighter pilots were venerated as modern knights and many became popular heroes. All well represented are the French military aviation exercises of 1911 through 1913 that pioneered production of the Farman Caudron Voisin Breguet Nieuport fighter models. Listed for both French and English aircraft are the Bleriot and Morane models. England had started late and had initially relied largely on the French aircraft industry especially for engines. The English planes represented here are the Airco B.E. 2 and Vickers models. Notably the British Vickers was the first experimenting with mounting machine guns. Perhaps best represented by the whimsical drawings are the German planes of the variant Taube models including the Albatros Aviatik D.F.W. Jeannin Stahltaube and Rumpler Taube. The Rumpler Taube was a pre-World War I monoplane aircraft. It was the first mass-produced military plane in Germany and was the most common having two seats. Imperial Germanys first practical military aircraft the Taube dove was used for virtually all military aircraft applications as a fighter bomber surveillance aircraft and trainer from 1910 until the start of World War I in August 1914. At least five versions of the Taube models are named and illustrated in this contemporary manuscript model book. With: French World War I Colonels Ledger an autograph note c. 1899-1904 and transcribed letters of 1914 from a certain E. Henry while stationed in Lorraine. Manuscript booklet on graph paper written in pencil in French 165 x 110mm. France: Sept.-Oct. 1918. Original blue wrappers with paper label no. 10. 15 leaves. Text consists of dated entries with brief daily descriptions of regiment activities one poignant line translated beaucoup du cadavres sur le terrain many corpses on the ground. Laid-in is 1 page autograph note listing eight men their death dates and a brief biographical description stained at edges and 4 page autograph manuscript signed E. Henry to Ma cherie femme of three different letters transcribed and docketed by the wife of Henry. Letters all dated August 1914 with content updating his wife on his news while stationed in Lorraine. He writes on 27th August 1914 translated You cannot imagine the suffering I endured at my unfortunate wounds
and goes on about his Lieutenants death although Henry finally says Je suis en bonne posture Im in good shape. Madame Henry seemingly transcribed the letters on to one large folding bifolia to maintain their content. Interesting pieces of World War I era ephemera consisting of personal reflections and unofficial recordings of military operations in French regiments.

unknown
