American Medical Bibliography 1639-1783. A chronological catalogue and critical and bibliographical study of books pamphlets broadsides and articles in periodical publications relating to the medical sciences -medicine surgery pharmacy dentistry and veterinary medicine - printed in the present territory of the United States of America during British dominion and the revolutionary war
Lathrop C. Harper Inc. New York first edition 1962. Cloth 4to. 885 pp 52 plates. Approximately 2500 entries. From the preface : "Dr. Guerra's bibliography is so organized as to present its materials in three distinct groups of American-printed publications - in books and pamphlets; in almanacs; and in newspapers and periodicals. .Each of the two groups of the bibliography listed in chronological order - books and almanacs - has been provided with an alphabetical index of authors and titles ; the newspaper section understandably arranged by the alphabet is followed by a chronological conspectus. The titles in every case are studied not merely listed. Under each of them the results are thus recorded: concise collation by signatures and pages; references to the entry in other bibliographies or historical studies; locations of copies; and copious extracts from the book in hand or editorial comment upon it demonstrating the appropriateness of its inclusion in a bibliography of American medicine." Smit History of the Life Sciences noted that the range is not liite dto medicine: "It includes a valuable Bibliography of bibliographies indexes of names and subjects. It also contains much that is of interest to the historian of biology e.g. medical botany ethnobiology". Near Very Good. Lathrop C. Harper Inc., New York, first edition, 1962 hardcover

[ANGLO-FRENCH WAR]
The voice of the people: A Collection of Addresses to His Majesty and Instructions to Members of Parliament by their Constituents upon the Unsuccessful Management of the present War both at Land and Sea; And the Establishment of a national militia.
London: Printed for J. Payne 1756. 2 xiii 1 56pp. Modern buff paper boards contrasting red morocco lettering-piece to spine. Title page browned. An anthology of letters addressed to the heads of state from numerous county officials occasioned by the conquest of the British controlled Mediterranean island of Minorca by French forces in 1756. The naval battle was the opening maritime engagement of the Seven Years' War in the European theatre. The failure of the Royal Navy to defend the territory led to the court-martial and execution of commanding officer Admiral John Byng. The defeat led to nationwide consternation that the French would press their advantage to capture British possessions in America and perhaps countenance an invasion of England. ESTC T50978. But do you really think we can without danger send them Vitamins and milk Can we be sure they will get it' The answer to this question has been given time after time by the American organizations that supervise the distribution; they know that the children and they alone receive the food; and they have many touching letters of thanks from the children themselves. Here is one of them" from the preface. Original wrappers lithographed in blue red and black. Light blue comb binding. . 8 in. x 5 in. . With seven full-page color lithographs. Over the course of three grueling days Union Major General George G. Meade's Army of the Potomac beat back desperate attacks by Confederate General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia including the ill-fated "Pickett's Charge" on July 3. The Union victory ended Lee's short-lived invasion of the North.</p><p>Many soldiers of the 17th Connecticut had been stung by criticisms leveled at their unit after the Battle of Chancellorsville where the corps was surprised and driven from the field with a flank attack by Stonewall Jackson. As Brady reports here events on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg were eerily similar to Chancellorsville. On July 1 their regiment was again divided outnumbered and outflanked by the same Confederate unit as it had been at Chancellorsville although this time under command of Richard Ewell. As he drove the Connecticut soldiers from the field and through the streets of Gettysburg on the first day of fighting Union Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Fowler was killed. In a disciplined retreat that evening the 17th Connecticut fell back and was posted near the center of the Union line on Cemetery Hill near a stone wall. Their position where the Union lines' "fishhook" curved southeastward toward Culp's Hill exposed them to murderous crossfire from Confederate artillery on three sides. The unit sustained high casualties for the next two days; of the unit's 386 men at Gettysburg 20 were killed 81 wounded and 96 reported missing. Brady himself was wounded by a shell fragment on July 2.</p><p>The regiment performed heroic service on the second day of the battle protecting Cemetery Hill from the attacks of Jubal Early's division specifically Harry Hays's brigade of "Louisiana Tigers." The 17th Connecticut then withstood the Confederate bombardment of July 3 spending much of the day trading shots with sharpshooters in town. Brady's report in slightly revised and expanded form is reprinted in <i>Official Records</i> Series 1 Vol. 27 Chap. 39 Part 1 pp. 716-719. In closing there Brady said "The regiment behaved gallantly. No troops in the world behaved better. Both officers and men are deserving of great credit for their coolness and bravery throughout the entire three days' battle."</p><p><b>Allen G. Brady </b>1822-1905 was from Torrington Connecticut. He enlisted in May 1861 as part of the 3rd Connecticut Infantry Regiment. In August 1862 he was commissioned into the 17thConnecticut Volunteers. Brady was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel for his valor at the Battle of Chancellorsville just two months before Gettysburg. There Brady assumed command after the colonel and lieutenant colonel of his regiment each fell. Brigadier General Charles Devens commended Brady in his official report stating "The Seventeenth Connecticut under command of Major Brady – its colonel having been wounded and lieutenant-colonel killed – was in fact rallied and reformed in their positions." In October 1863 Brady was discharged for disability presumably from his wound suffered at Gettysburg three months previous. He was mustered into the Veteran Reserve Corps and served as Provost-General at the Point Lookout Union Prison Camp in 1864. He was brevetted Colonel in August 1865.</p>

CIVIL WAR CONFEDERACY
Opposing the Confederate Draft
1862. No binding. Fine. Broadside. ""The Petition of Certain Non-Conscripts Respectfully Presented to the Confederate States Congress."" Richmond August 8 1862. Signed in print ""The Petitioners By their Counsel John H. Gilmer."" 1 p. 7 7/8 x 10 3/8 in. Petitioning against General Order No. 46 of the Confederate War Department which rescinded the part of the Confederate Conscription Act of April 16 1862 that mandated the discharge of all voluntary enlistees under age 18 or over age 35 in July 1862. ""These were the terms of the law. They were plain unequivocal and mandatory. Common sense - universal public opinion . understood accepted and adopted the law . Shall an army order revoke a solemn act of Congress . Have we a constitutional Government with specific powers granted . or have we an unlimited Government dependent only on Executive will or ministerial caprice Are the People free or is the Executive supreme"" Historical BackgroundPresident Davis Secretary of War George Randolph and the Confederate Congress instituted the first conscription act in American history in April 1862 after early defeats in Tennessee and North Carolina in anticipation of the expiration of one-year enlistments signed at the war's outset. The Conscription Act would cause all males ages 18 to 35 to be drafted into service unless exempted. Those already enlisted would be held to a three year commitment from their date of entry into the service. Conscription raised difficulties for Southern politicians who had argued for most of their careers against the broad construction of federal powers in the United States Constitution. Some believed it violated the cardinal principle of states' rights others such as Georgia Governor Joseph Brown protested its tendency toward centralization and despotism. Common folks complained about the fact that planters who owned 20 or more slaves were exempt as were many overseers and tradesmen and those who could afford to buy ""substitutes.""According to historian James McPherson conscription was ""the most unpopular act of the Confederate government. Yeoman farmers who could not buy their way out of the army voted with their feet and escaped to the woods or swamps. . Armed bands of draft-dodgers and deserters ruled whole counties.""ReferencesParrish & Willingham 5422 locating 5 copies.McPherson James. Battle Cry of Freedom New York 1988 p. 432. unknown

[French & Indian War Map] [Southeastern US] U S
An Accurate Map of Louisiana and the Territory in Dispute between the English & French.
A great small map of a good portion of the now southeastern United States reaching to the Gulf coast at the south and Texas to the west. The area to the east of the Mississippi is marked "Territory in Dispute." The colonies of Virginia North and South Carolina and Georgia all extend to the Mississippi. <br /><br />English claims to the disputed area are bolstered by a notation along the border between the Carolinas noting: "A large country subject to the English since 1729." Numerous Indian tribes are noted as well as "Wandering Indians" at the western portion of the Gulf coast. <br /><br />Maps from <i>The British Magazine</i> are cited by Jolly as "practically unobtainable." A fascinating portrayal of the area that was the subject of the French and Indian War in a very uncommon source. <br /><br />Reference: Jolly Maps of America in Periodicals before 1800: 157. Dorr led the effort to change Rhode Island's political system and expand voting rights. After trying to change the system internally he created the People's Party held an extralegal constitutional convention and set up a competing government. The Rhode Island General Assembly drafted a rival constitution and in 1842 both groups voted on their respective Constitutions. Both Dorr and sitting Governor Samuel Ward King were elected governor but King refused to accept the People's Constitution declared martial law and accused Dorr of treason. While he did not attempt to seize the State House or governmental institutions a few armed clashes did occur. Dorr fled the state but returned and was convicted in 1843 but released for health reasons two years later. Ultimately Rhode Island greatly liberalized voting rights in the aftermath of the rebellion. This trial record prepared by his defense attorneys is especially scarce. R & B 44-2044. Union Volunteers Refreshment Saloon
<p>Showing Union troops arriving in Philadelphia from New Jersey via ferry and marching in formation towards the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon cheered on by Philadelphians. Text at the bottom lists members of the committee and men willing to accept donations for the saloon. This image became a choice souvenir for soldiers passing through Philadelphia.</p> <b>CIVIL WAR.</b>Print. <i>Union Volunteers Refreshment Saloon of Philadelphia</i>. James Queen delineator and lithographer. Philadelphia: Thomas Sinclair 1861. In period frame 35 x 29 in. <p><b>Historical Background</b></p><p>The Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon was organized in South Philadelphia in 1861 by grocer Barzilla S. Brown. He began informally distributing food to Union troops traveling through Philadelphia an important rail and steamer hub. The relief effort became official on May 27 1861. The saloon provided soldiers with food drink stamps and paper and offered traveling troops a place to rest. This initial effort differed in some ways from the later Sanitary Fairs that contributed to the care of sick and wounded soldiers. At this point the civilian members were catering to the needs of healthy new recruits.</p><p>In September the Refreshment Saloon added a hospital to aid sick and wounded troops. The saloon supported itself through donations of food clothing cash and later through admission cost to view the Confederate navy vessel <i>Ram</i> which was captured in 1863. After providing social and medical services for four years the saloon closed in late 1865.</p><p><b>James Fuller Queen</b> 1820-1886 apprenticed to learn lithographic draftsmanship. He drew a large variety of lithographs for large printing houses of Wagner & McGuigan Thomas Sinclair and P. S. Duval. He drew views of buildings cities scenic attractions newsworthy events portraits sheet music covers diplomas illustrations for magazines and other images. He also became an outstanding chromolithographer. His view of the "Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon" is one of Queen's most complex works and perhaps the one for which he is best known. He later drew the United States Sanitary Commission Fair in Philadelphia.</p><p><b>Thomas S. Sinclair</b> c. 1805-1881 was born in the Orkney Islands of Scotland and studied lithography in Edinburgh and other cities. He started his own printing firm in Philadelphia in 1838. He was among the first in Philadelphia to experiment with color lithography. From 1854 to 1859 his brother joined him in the firm of Thomas Sinclair & Co. Later his son worked with him in Thomas Sinclair & Son. He published three different hand-colored lithographs by Queen of Brown's Refreshment Saloon and its friendly rival William M. Cooper's Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon in 1861.</p> Thomas Sinclair

[Civil War Prison] Ransom, John L
Andersonville Diary Escape and list of the Dead Name Company Regiment Date of Death and Number of Grave in Cemetary.
Cincinnati:: Douglass Brothers & Payne 1883. Second Printing of the First Edition. A Fine tight copy in green cloth binding with bright gilt to cover and spine. John L. Ransom was born in 1843. He joined the Union Army during the American Civil War in November 1862 and served as Quartermaster of Company A 9th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. In 1863 Ransom was captured in Tennessee and taken to Andersonville Georgia. During his imprisonment he kept a diary of his experiences. On the 6th July 1864 he wrote: "Boiling hot camp reeking with filth and no sanitary privileges; men dying off over 140 per day. Stockade enlarged taking in eight or ten more acres giving us more room and stumps to dig up for wood to cook with. Jimmy Devers has been a prisoner over a year and poor boy will probably die soon." Of the 49485 prisoners who entered the camp nearly 13000 died from disease and malnutrition. This is Ransom's stunning first-hand account of stay in Andersonville.
