[Vietnam War Literature] Nolan, Keith William
Into Laos. The Story of Dewey Canyon II/Lam Son 719.
Novato:: Presidio 1986. First Printing of the First Edition. A Fine copy in aVery Good plus dust jacket with light sunning to the spine. This work presents a comprehensive command history clear action and a vivid but humane narrative. The first all-South Vietnamese offensive into Laos in early 1971 produced both an interruption of Northern buildups and a test of Vietnamization of the war but despite a 10-to-1 casualty ratio and tons of captured supplies was seen to be so savage and damaging to the South and to American support forces that much of the military and the press deemed it a defeat. Nolan's arguments that it had positive effects are well presented and convincing. Presidio, hardcover

SEAT OF WAR ADVERTISER
The baltic sea: With the surrounding Countries as far as London Paris Vienna Moscow &c.; showing the principal Railways Roads Naval Arsenals Fortresses Forts &c. and Napoleon's Route to Moscow in 1812
London: Published by Deutsch Brothers 1854. Original publisher's printed tan wrappers. Extremities a trifle creased and dusty lower panel torn. Short closed tear to foot of map. An apparently unrecorded map of the Baltic Sea and surrounding countries likely issued due to increased public interest in the region following the outbreak of the Crimean War in 1853. Curiously along with 'the principal Railways Roads Naval Arsenals Fortresses Forst &c. ' the route taken by Napoleon’s Grande Armée during the French invasion of Russia in 1812 is additionally mapped -presumably to further heighten the militaristic bent of publication. . Dimensions folded 90 x 140mm: unfolded 420 x 280 mm. Published by Deutsch, Brothers unknown

(BROADSIDE BALLAD -- CIVIL WAR)
Welcome Our Gallant 69th
New York: H. De Marsan n.y. Broadside. 6¼" X 10". Very good. Numerous edge chips along right side and bit on lower edge only slightly encroaching on decorative border. This crudely printed broadside ballad undated but circa 1861 includes a thick decorative patriotic border featuring red and blue stars and stripes olive-branch clutching American Eagle etc. with publisher's data "H. De Marsan Publisher / 54 Chatham St. / N.Y." at bottom center of border. Sung to the tune of "Marshal Ney" a popular tune celebrating the Napoleonic figure this Civil War tune celebrates the 69th New York Infantry Regiment the "Fighting Irish" or "Fighting Sixty-Ninth." Two stanzas and one chorus are featured the chorus reading: "Right and left -- left and right: / We fought the Rebels with all our might; / Brave CORCORAN did wounded fall / And HAGGERTY died by a Traitor's ball." Irish-born Michael Corcoran 1827-63 led the 69th at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861 in which he was taken prisoner and Irish-born Captain James Haggerty the first member of the 69th to die was reportedly killed by a Louisiana Zouave which also included many Irishmen. These "penny ballads" were all the rage during much of the 19th century and were invariably printed on thin delicate stock and sold by street vendors. A quite attractive example of this rare survivor. Inkstamped on verso is "Geo. F. Hambrecht" -- a well-known Civil War collector and noted Lincoln scholar 1871-1943 who founded the Lincoln Fellowship of Wisconsin and served as director of the Wisconsin State Board of Vocational Education. H. De Marsan unknown
