"Andrew Hagstrom was a Swedish immigrant to the United States. In 1909. While working as a farmhand and in the meatpacking industry he studied graphic arts at the New York Mechanics Institute. He then formed a drafting business in lower Manhattan c. 1916. To demonstrate his skills to potential customers and also help them find his business the new businessman produced a map of his shop location. The map featured exaggeratedly wide streets that offered abundant room for clear labeling of addresses transportation and other terrain features. The map proved popular and he began selling it forming the Hagstrom Map Company in 1916. He expanded coverage to all of Manhattan then all of New York City then its outlying regions eventually offering over 100 maps. The dance was for the "United Electrical Radio and Machine Workers of America Local 442" and was the 4th annual dance for this Union. Ed Regna's Orchestra provided the music and the dance was held at the Polish American Home in Bayonne NJ. "The company was founded by electrical inventor William Woodnut Griscom in 1880. An important early customer for electric boat motors was the Electric Launch Company also known as Elco. Following an 1892 bankruptcy financier Isaac Rice bailed out Electro-Dynamic and became a co-owner. Griscom died in a hunting accident in 1897. Electro-Dynamic manufactured the main propulsion motor for USS Holland the United States Navy's first modern submarine launched in 1897. 1 In 1899 Rice founded Electric Boat and made Electro-Dynamic and Elco subsidiaries of it. Electro-Dynamic relocated from Philadelphia to Bayonne New Jersey at some point prior to 1964 with a plant on Avenue A. In 1964 a fire destroyed this plant and the company acquired a facility in Avenel New Jersey formerly occupied by Security Steel. In the 20th century the company manufactured electric motors and generators for numerous submarines built by Electric Boat as well as naval and civilian boats built by Elco." from Wikipedia .
