The responsibility for defending the Confederacy rested with two great military forces. One of these armies defended the heartland of the Confederacy-a vital area which embraced the state of Tennessee and large portions of Alabama Georgia Mississippi and Kentucky.This is the story of that army-the first detailed study to be based upon research in manuscript collections and the first to explore the military significance of the heartland.The Army of Tennessee faced problems and obstacles far more staggering than any encountered by the other great Confederate force. Lees Army of Northern Virginia. Lees army was charged with the defense of an area considerably smaller in size. And while Lees line of defense extended only about 125 miles the front defended by the Army of Tennessee stretched for some 400 miles.Yet the Army of the Heartland has heretofore been given relatively slight attention by historians. With this volume Thomas Lawrence Connelly a native Tennessean has brought Confederate military history more nearly into balance.Throughout the war the Army of Tennessee was plagued by ineffective leadership. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY BRITISH CAVALRY COMMANDER HENRY PAGET 1ST MARQUESS OF ANGELSEY.
February 6th 1847. 1847. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink & filling almost 3 sides of a sheet of light gray paper folded once to form 4 sides approximately 7-1/4 inches high by 4-5/8 inches wide. The letter has been mounted on a lightly larger sheet of cream-colored stiff paper. Signed "Anglesey" There are a few small ink smudges to the 2nd & 3rd sides. Very good. <p>The letter is addressed to Scottish geologist Sir Roderick Murchison and concerns a publication which Murchison is proposing and how it would be funded. "Some Estimate of the probable cost of money and of time is called for from General Colby and when it is received you shall again hear from me." The reference is probably to General Thomas Frederic Colby a leading geographer who had been director of the Ordnance Survey.<p>Henry Paget 1st Marquess of Anglesey 1768-1854 was a British army officer and politician. After serving as Member of Parliament for Carnarvon and then for Milborne Port he took part in the Flanders Campaign. During the Peninsula War he commanded the cavalry for Sir John Moore's army in Spain and at the Battle of Sahagun virtually destroyed a regiment of French cavalry. He led the charge of the heavy cavalry against Comte d'Erlon's column at the Battle of Waterloo losing part of one of his legs to a cannonball at the end of the battle. In later life he served as Master-General of Ordnance from 1846 to 1852.<p>The Scottish geologist Sir Roderick sometimes as here spelled "Rhoderick" Impey Murchison 1st Baronet 1792-1871 was the first to describe and investigate the Silurian system. During the last decade of his life he chiefly investigated the Highlands of Scotland. Murchison was one of the founders and a president of the Royal Geographical Society and served on the Royal Commission on the British Museum. In 1855 he was appointed director-general of the British Geological Survey and director of the Royal School of Mines and the Museum of Practical Geology in Jermyn Street London. Octavo. 361pps. with numerous black-and-white illustrations -- 20 of them full-page. There is mild bumping to the tips and light touches of soiling to the cloth. Also the page-edges are slightly browned. Modest reading wear including the very sporadic smudge fox-mark or creased page-corner. This item has been recently restored: it has new inner hinges the endpapers are original a tightened spine and new endcaps where there had previously been a bit of fraying to the cloth. It is overall then quite clean and the binding tight with all pages intact. This is an association copy inscribed in a fine calligraphic hand to 'Dr. Cyrus Townsend Brady with compliments of T. F. Rodenbough New York April 6/'03.' It is also inscribed in an only slightly less stylish hand 'with the compliments of the old sergeant Jno. H. Cook.' Brady would of course go on to become a successful and highly-published author of historical and biographical titles his career barely begun at the time of this signing; his works included 'Recollections of a Missionary in the Great West' 'Commodore Paul Jones' 'In the Wasp's Nest' 'Sir Henry Morgan Bucaneer' 'Arizona' and 'Indian Fights and Fighters.' He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1883 and had spent several years in the West seeking adventure and working for the Missouri Pacific and Union Pacific railroads. He later became an ordained deacon in the Episcopal church before resigning to engage in his literary pursuits. The two signers of the book the author Rodenbough and Cook were both recipients of the Medal of Honor for feats of heroism during the Civil War. Rodenbough a horseman served with the 2nd U.S. Cavalry the 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry and the 3rd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry; he received his citation for actions at Trevilian Station Virginia. Cook -- on whom a chapter including a couple of sketches is devoted in this book -- was a member of Company A 119th Illinois Infantry; he received his Medal 'for conspicuous bravery at the battle of Pleasant Hill Louisiana April 9th 1864.' A very nice copy of an elusive book -- a collection of true stories concerning the Civil War and the Wild West -- rendered one-of-a-kind with the inscriptions. Rodenbough published a number of Civil War titles and is perhaps best known among collectors for his 'From Everglade To Canon With the Second Dragoons' 1875 a classic piece of nineteenth century American military history.
