The stationery features a vignette of the hotel in the upper left corner of the sheet. H.D. Kampmann is listed as Proprietor and McLean & Mudge Managers. S Fletcher of Detroit that he had arrived in San Antonio with his father put on his uniform and reported for duty: "they treated me very cordial indeed and it made me realize more fully what it is to be a regular." He mentions that Gen. McKibben sic- McKibbin was commanding the Dept. of Texas and was Colonel of the 12th wearing that insignia on his collar. "It made me feel blue to see that 12th on his collar for the last one I saw was on 'Drewdy.' " Dupont says his friend Drewdy also a soldier had promised him that his next birthday they would celebrate in the 12th. Apparently Dupont's friend did not return from the war. (CIVIL WAR). (COPPER HEADS). [Anon.]
THE OLIVE BRANCH--PEACE AND UNION. HOW WE SHALL OBTAIN THEM caption title
New York NY: P.W. Derham Printer and Stationer 15 Nassua Street Corner of Pine 1863. Folio broadside 48 x 29.5 cm. text in two columns beneath the title in display type. Old folds with slight damage; some foxing. Professionally rebacked. This broadside printed ca. 1863-4 offers a political analysis of the options for reconciliation with the Confederacy and a denunciation of the statements of Gov. Horatio Seymour. Printed by P.W. Derham a stationer from New York whose other surviving works include an 1862-4 broadside reprint of a pre-secession speech by Alexander H. Stephens Vice President of the Confederacy in which Stephens argues for preserving the Union Hummel 542: notes this is a "forged speech for the political campaign; 1864". <br /> The author of the broadside presents four scenarios for reconciliation with the South and examines the Confederate response to each by quoting several Southern newspapers including the Richmond Dispatch the Atlanta Intelligencer the Richmond Enquirer and the Charleston Mercury among others. The author proposes several solutions including applying for foreign intervention surrendering and appealing to the South to rejoin the Union and recognizing the independence of the Confederacy though invariably Confederate viewpoints making each option impossible are presented. For example the author proposes to "Hold out the olive branch confess our error in having resented the bombardment of Fort Sumter propose Peace and Union and with becoming dignity await the answer which the South cannot fail to give its faithful ally the Democratic Party" but then notes "that answer we have already." The author goes on to provide several quotes in which zealous Southern newspaper writers declare that they can never rejoin the Union again under any circumstances. The author also quotes several statements from Horatio Seymour who was running for re-election as governor of the state of New York implying he was a Southern sympathizer. Ultimately the author of the broadside in satirical style is unable to reach any convincing conclusion for the best method of attaining "Peace and Union" but represents an early rejection of the Peace Democrat or Copperhead positions which were to become so frequent 1862-64. Two listings found on OCLC: Lib. of Congress; NY Hist. Society. The New York Historical Society notes that the printer P.W. Derham was listed in New York City directories as at this address from 1863-1877 and that this broadside's purpose was "opposing the Democratic Party platform and the reelection of New York Democratic governor Horatio Seymour." <br /> Seymour 1810-1886 who had been elected governor of New York in 1852 and again in 1862 was running for re-election in 1864. He supported the Crittenden Compromise of 1860 in an effort to keep the South from seceding but supported the Civil War once it commenced. According to his biography in the DAB he continued to oppose some of Pres. Lincoln's policies during the war and "insisted that the extra-constitutional powers assumed by the Lincoln administration were the most serious problem arising from the Civil War." For his actions in re-establishing order after the New York Draft Riots Horace Greeley characterized Seymour as a temporizing "Copperhead." Seymour lost his bid for re-election. P.W. [War of 1812] [New York] HAWLEY, William]
SUPPLEMENT TO THE NEW-YORK EVENING POST. SATURDAY JULY 31. TRIAL OF CAPTAIN HAWLEY. caption title and start of text
New York 1813. Newspaper broadside. 51 x 34 cm. Text in five columns. Overall toning to paper faint old stain paper flaw across part of the last two columns resulting in some disjointing of text left margin uneven disbound. <br /> In 1813 militia commanders in New York were ordered to be ready for a British invasion. One of the commanders Capt. William Hawley in charge of the 142nd Regiment 3d Brigade of Infantry issued an order to his men on June 10 re-printed in this newspaper supplement which reads in part: "The United States being involved in war whether just and necessary we as citizens have a right to judge and to express that judgment without fear or molestation. But while we enjoy those rights we are bound to render obedience to the laws of our country and to support the government at the same time that we condemn the administration for their weakness and folly in plunging us unprepared into this Quixotic war. From the support hitherto afforded the General Government by its citizens we have a right to claim of them and they are bound to give us protection. In consequence of the misconduct of our rulers this protection has not been afforded us and we are now called upon to protect ourselves. Painful as this duty may be I hope and trust that every citizen under my command will sacrifice with me on the altar of patriotism every feeling inconsistent with a full co-operation with the rest of our fellow-citizens; and when the enemy shall approach to rally round the standard of our country and in defence of our liberties our homes and our fire-sides be ready and willing to lay down our lives at the threshhold of our country." For his outspoken opinions Hawley was arrested and charged as follows in his court martial trial: "For unofficer-like conduct in endeavouring to excite dissention and insubordination among the men under his command by issuing on the 10th day of June 1813 to the Company under his command an order." Hawley pleaded not guilty and was subsequently acquitted. Brigadier General Bogardus then reversed the sentence of the courts martial stating that Hawley's order "was calculated to introduce political discussion between the Captain and the privates of his company and thus to lessen the distance and to diminish the respect which ought to exist between them." Although citizens have a right to question rules and doctrines of the General Government the same rights are not afforded to the military "because it was impeaching and impugning the motives and conduct of the General Government which in a junior officer not having a separate command could not have been necessary as an act of discretion and was not authorized by the authority of the state or of his superior officers."<br /> The final three columns print Capt. Hawley's written defense of his actions in which he asserts the rights of citizen soldiers to free speech. He states his reasoning for each sentence in his order to his company. Regarding his claim that the government had not properly protected its citizens by following the maxim "in peace prepare for war" he cites an address by Pres. Thomas Jefferson in 1808 who chose to use the abundance of money in the country's treasury to fund canals rather than protect its cities. Hawley says ". if the light of truth may not shed its beams among citizen-soldiers; acting under the law organizing the militia; if obedience to the laws of my country and a willing support of the government be wrong: If the burden of my song must be 'Great is President Madison of the Americans and all that he does is right and just' Then have I offended. But not until this doctrine is established and becomes the law of my country can I consent to yield those rights for which our fathers fought and bled." William Hawley 1784-1845 who had previously studied law in New York City resigned his commission in 1814. Richard Barbuto in his book "New York's War of 1812: Politics Society and Combat" Univ. of Oklahoma Press: 2021 p.150 notes: "Many soldiers were well aware of the case. Such events diminshed the morale and cohesion of the militia units charged with the defense of the city." Hawley later became an Episcopal minister moving to Washington DC to become assistant rector of St. John's Church until his death. He officiated at the wedding of James Monroe's daughter the funeral of William Henry Harrison and the marriages of the children of John Quincy Adams and John Tyler. see: his brief biography on the Indian Land Tenure Foundation's website where he is also listed as a signer of a treaty with the Sioux in 1837. unknown

[Civil War Recruiting Poster] [Massachusetts] (BANKS, Nathaniel P.)
ATTENTION! All citizens of BROOKLINE and ROXBURY ready and willing to start for WASHINGTON by daylight to-morrow TUESDAY are requested to meet at the drill room Brookline at Eight o'clock this MONDAY Evening. May 26 1862
Boston MA 1862. Broadside. 25 x 20 cm. Blind stamp of Essex Institute in one corner; short split at margin along an old fold line not affecting text. An attractive broadside appealing for men to go on a day's notice to support the Union cause. Based on the date we think it fair to believe that this is an appeal to support former Governor of Massachusetts now Major-General Nathaniel P. Banks. The Confederate capture of Front Royal on May 23 left Banks isolated and outnumbered and in full retreat. He escaped across the Potomac at Harpers Ferry but with considerable losses especially in prisoners but nonetheless rescued his army and returned to Washington. A timely call to reinforce Banks who as governor prepared a state militia which when called by Banks' successor Gov. Andrew were well drilled and well equipped and which promptly supported the Union in the desperate early months of the war. unknown

1925. Folio. Eight pages approximately 2750 words; accompanied by another autograph letter from Russell to Trowbridge 14 March 1925; 4to four pages approximately 750 words with more information on the political situation in Missouri on the eve of war and an autograph transcription by Russell of the long poem "The Battle of Wilson's Creek August 10 1861" folio two pages with his own commentary on the poem. Folded. Insect damage to the poem and first leaf of the longer letter resulting in the loss of a number of letters but quite legible throughout. 813. Russell a native of St. Louis enlisted under Lincoln's first call for troops and served in a Missouri regiment through the summer of 1864. Following an outline of sectional struggle from 1820 and early events of the war given in the first half of the longer letter Russell describes the events of the Wilson's Creek Campaign and then his own eyewitness to history: "The Kansas boys like ourselves were resting when all at once the rebels crept up the hill to the top of the crest opened a tremendous fire right into the Iowa boys and our regiment but we went at them anyway and a hand to hand struggle began . My Captain Cary Gratz was killed . I was wounded four times and the Kansas boys were holding their own. Capt. Lyon had been hit twice once a scratch along the forehead and a light superficial wound in the knee. I was carried down the hill and placed on the hill side opposite the line of battle the valley being merely a hollow. I had a good view of the fight as it went on. My first attention was attracted to my right as I lay there and watched Capt. Lyon trying to rally the Iowa boys who were in a panic their Colonel had been killed and although the Kansas boys had saved them Capt. Lyon was rallying them into formation to use as they were then near the front. All at once I saw him rear off that dople sic gray horse and fall to the ground. Maj. Schofield also ran to his side a messenger sent for our surgeon Dr. Comyns . Capt. Lyon was carried down the hill he was shot nearly half way up from the hollow to the battle lines. The bullet had struck him squarely in the breast and had gone through his hear and he had lost the pleasure of seeing the victory his indomitable courage had won."_The Confederates commanded by Gen. Sterling Price made another assault following the death of Lyon but Samuel Sturgis rallied the Union troops and the Federal lines held. Sturgis then left the field toward Springfield and the Confederates did not pursue him. "The campaign marked the beginning of the war in Missouri and the trans-Mississippi. Afterward the Federal army withdrew to rolla Missouri leaving the Southerners in possession of most of the southwestern region of the state" "Encyclopedia of the Confederacy"._Lyon 1818-1861 a Connecticut native graduated from West Point in 1841 served in the Mexican War and on the western frontier most of the time to the eve of Civil War in "Bleeding Kansas" becoming involved in the political issue of slavery in the territories. Appointed brigadier general in May 1861 to command the Union forces in St. Louis he also led discussions with Confederate sympathizers on Missouri's position in the union; when compromise failed he launched his first military campaign which culminated in his death at Wilson's Creek. "The entire north mourned his death and he immediately became a national hero and martyr . his brilliant work had done much to hold Missouri for the Union" DAB. unknown
