‎Edson's Raiders The 1St Marine Raider Battalion in World War II‎

"The Marine Raiders were special operations forces originally established by the United States Marine Corps during World War II to conduct amphibious light infantry warfare. "Edson's" Raiders of 1st Marine Raider Battalion and "Carlson's" Raiders of 2nd Marine Raider Battalion are said to have been the first United States special operations forces to form and see combat during World War II. Despite the original intent for Raiders to serve in a special operations capacity most combat operations saw the Raiders employed as conventional infantry. This combined with the resentment within the rest of the Marine Corps that the Raiders were an "elite force within an elite force" led to the original Raider units being disbanded. " from Wikipedia . "Virginia Clay-Clopton 1825–1915 was a political hostess and activist in Alabama and Washington D. C. She was also known as Virginia Tunstall Virginia Clay and Mrs. Clement Claiborne Clay. She took on different responsibilities after the Civil War. As the wife of US Senator Clement Claiborne Clay from Alabama she was part of a group of young southerners who boarded together in the capital in particular hotels. In the immediate postwar period she worked to gain her husband's freedom from imprisonment at Fort Monroe where Jefferson Davis former president of the Confederacy was also held. In the late 19th century Clay-Copton who remarried after her first husband died became an activist in the United Daughters of the Confederacy a group established after the Civil War that was instrumental in shaping public discussions about the war and role of the South. She worked to raise funds for Confederate cemeteries and memorials. She also worked for women's suffrage. Clay-Copton was one of a number of Southern women to publish her memoir at the turn of the 20th century; these women's accounts became part of the public discourse about the war. "from Wikipedia . Ninth Army commanded by Lieutenant General William Hood Simpson in February 1945 which marked the beginning of the Allied invasion of Germany. On 9 February the U. S. Ninth Army—operating under Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery's Anglo-Canadian 21st Army Group since the Battle of the Bulge—was to cross the Roer and link up with the Canadian First Army under Lieutenant-General Harry Crerar coming from the Nijmegen area of the Netherlands in Operation Veritable which had started at 05: 00 on 8 February. However once the Canadians had advanced the Germans opened the sluice gates of upstream dams Rur Dam and Urft Dam. This stopped the Americans from crossing as planned. It had been anticipated that the Germans would try to do this and that General Omar Bradley's U. S. 12th Army Group could capture them in time to stop the flooding. " from Wikipedia . The book is in Very Good- condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book is in generally clean condition. There is noticeable slanting to the spine of the book. The front spine joint has been reglued and there is a chip missing from the bottom spine end. The text pages are clean and bright. "RAF Coastal Command was a formation within the Royal Air Force RAF. Founded in 1936 it was to act as the RAF maritime arm after the Fleet Air Arm became part of the Royal Navy in 1937. Naval aviation was neglected in the inter-war period 1919–1939 and as a consequence the service did not receive the resources it needed to develop properly or efficiently. This continued until the outbreak of the Second World War during which it came to prominence. Owing to the Air Ministry's concentration on RAF Fighter Command and RAF Bomber Command Coastal Command was often referred to as the "Cinderella Service" a phrase first used by the First Lord of the Admiralty at the time A V Alexander. Its primary task was to protect convoys from the German Kriegsmarine's U-boat force. It also protected Allied shipping from the aerial threat posed by the Luftwaffe. The main operations of Coastal Command were defensive defending supplies lines in the various theatres of war most notably the battle of the Atlantic." from Wikipedia . ‎Cowley, Chas.‎

‎Air Raids On The Hartlepools‎

‎West Hartlepool England: B. T. Ord Ltd. Very Good. 1945. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Stapled wraps. B&W Illustrations; This is an oblong paperback book with cardstock covers and a stapled spine. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some edge wear rubbing and nicking. The covers have several creases. The text pages are clean and bright. Photographs are by F. C. Huntley and show some of the damage to Hartlepools during the air raid bombings. Included are several articles by local newspapers on the subject. "Hartlepool was a more significant target than the resort town of Scarborough. The port had extensive civilian docks and factories and was defended by three BL 6 inch Mk VII naval guns on the seafront. Two guns were at Heugh Battery and one at Lighthouse Battery. The guns were manned by 11 officers and 155 local men of the Durham Royal Garrison Artillery. The gun crews were warned at 04: 30 of the possibility of an attack and issued live ammunition. At 07: 46 they received word that large ships had been sighted and at 08: 10 a bombardment of the town began. No warning had been given to naval patrols in the area which were meant to be always on duty and the poor weather just before the raid meant that only four destroyers were on patrol while two light cruisers and a submarine which might otherwise have been out remained in Hartlepool harbour. The destroyers HMS Doon Test Waveney and HMS Moy were on patrol when—at 07: 45—Doon saw three large vessels approaching which opened fire shortly after. The only weapons the destroyers had capable of damaging a large vessel were torpedoes; they were out of torpedo range and three destroyers turned away. Doon closed to 5000 yd 2.5 nmi; 4.6 km fired one torpedo which missed and retreated." from Wikipedia . B. T. Ord Ltd. paperback‎
