‎Jalapa: January 10 1848. Near fine. Mourning card printed in gilt on black cardstock with an elaborate ornamental border 3.25 x 5 inches. Minor wear. An elaborate death notice honoring a decorated Mexican military commander in 1848. As a colonel under Santa Anna Don Juan Morales 1802-1847 served as field commander for Mexican forces at the Alamo and Coleto in 1836 and as a Major General in the Mexican-American War. He served as commandant of Veracruz abandoning the city when surrender seemed inevitable; he died shortly thereafter. The text of the card reads: "El dia 23 del procsimo pasado fallecio en Atlisco el Senor General Don Juan Morales Q. E. P. D. Su Esposa Hermanos Parientes Amigos y personas de estimacion lo participan a V. llenos del mas acerbo sentimiento suplicandole haga por su alma los sufragios que le dicte su piedad; por euyo favor le viviran reconocidos." ‎[World War II]. [Japan Institute, Inc.]‎

‎The Japan Institute Profoundly Regrets to Announce That Due to the Freezing by the United States Government of Japanese Credits in This Country. first line of text‎

‎New York 1941. Very good. Broadside 8.5 x 5.5 inches. Original mailing folds light toning. A very rare circular letter that truly captures a specific moment in time in which the sense of panic within the Japanese American community two days after Pearl Harbor can be felt through the text. The letter informs the recipient that the Japan Institute in New York City is ceasing its activities because its assets have been frozen as of December 9 1941. Overall the text reveals a real sense of loss and missed opportunity that such a short-lived organization as the Japan Institute has with "deep regret.made the unhappy decision of discontinuing our activities." The organization hopes to "take up our work in the not too distant future when conditions will have returned to normal" and be able to "continue our contribution to the promotion of human kinship in those higher realms of thought of culture and of the spirit to which great task we shall always be devoted." The last paragraph states that the officers of the Japan Institute hope to flee New York and sail "from the Pacific Coast for Japan about the middle of this month." A handwritten pencil note at bottom left adds further historical context: "Rec'd Dec. 8 1941 -- one day after Japan declared war upon U.S." OCLC reports just a single copy at the Library of Congress. unknown‎

‎Coleccion de los Principales Partes y Anuncios Relativos a la Campaña del Peru Desde 29 de Enero de 1821 en Que Tomó el Mando el Señor La Serna Hasta Fin de Marzo de 1824‎

‎Lima 1824. Good plus. 271pp. Modern paper boards printed spine label. Moderate tanning. Light worming to final leaves repaired slightly affecting text. Scarce printing of correspondence relating to the royalist military campaigns in Peru under Viceroy José de la Serna from the beginning of 1821 to early 1824. La Serna was installed as Viceroy in January 1821 following a petition of top royalist officers. He evacuated Lima and moved the colonial capital inland to Cuzco where he set about rebuilding his army and campaigning to recapture the territory lost by his predecessors. In this he was quite successful and by the beginning of 1824 he had recaptured almost all of Peru and penned in Bolivar at Trujillo. The correspondence included here follows this successful portion of his generalship and provides an important first hand accounting of events. Following this period however La Serna suffered his own military rebellion and was sufficiently weakened until he lost the Battle of Ayacucho and thereby all of Peru in December 1824. OCLC locates only two copies at U.S. institutions Harvard and the JCB.
Medina Lima 3779. Vargas Ugarte 5174. unknown‎

‎[World War II]. Gamon, John A.‎

‎Archive of Manuscript Letters by U.S. Navy Commander Capt. John A. Gamon Jr. Writing Home to His Wife During the Interwar Period World War II and the Korean War‎

‎Various locations 1952. Very good. Approximately 230 manuscript or typed letters signed totaling about 550 pages almost all with original transmittal envelopes. Minor overall wear. A voluminous collection of original correspondence sent home by United States Navy Commander John Arthur Gamon Jr. 1910-2001 covering almost twenty years of his military service encompassing the interwar period World War II and the Korean War. John A. Gamon was raised in Berkeley California then trained and served as a pilot in the Navy. The overwhelming percentage of the present collection includes letters written from him to Helen Mae Hall who shortly became Helen Mae Gamon. His first few letters here are written to "Miss" Helen Hall while his June 9 1937 letter addressed to "Mrs. John A. Gamon Jr." The couple had at least two children who are mentioned in the letters named Goodie and Jona. Gamon served in the Navy until 1960. He passed away in San Diego on September 2 2001.

Gamon's letters are chock full of information about his activities both professional and personal his leisure activities in various port cities and at naval bases throughout the country and more over a seventeen year period. The collection includes around 200 letters by Gamon to his wife twenty-five letters from Helen back to him and a handful of family letters. The great majority of Gamon's letters around 150 total were written during World War II or the Korean War. His prewar letters were sent from the U.S.S. Oklahoma at home in Berkeley at port in Tacoma Honolulu Panama San Diego Pensacola Norfolk various inland locations and others. Gamon frequently reports on his flying adventures his activities and the specifics of life aboard ship as well as those of fellow sailors mentions the books he's reading movies he's seen describes his various social activities and more. He also asks Helen to report on home front activities and regularly requests various family news.

The great majority of the letters were sent home by Gamon while serving with the U.S. Navy during World War II in 1943 and 1944. When the war began Gamon was a lieutenant commander stationed in Virginia then he moved around to Florida New York Rhode Island Virginia and California. Because he served largely on the home front during the war Gamon's letters do not include much content on the war itself; the letters are in a sense the record of a marriage lived out at a distance and in letters. As with his earlier letters Gamon reports on his professional and personal life in the Navy then touches on issues at home and continually expresses a profound sense of love for Helen and his family across the miles. Gamon's later letters dated between 1948 and 1952 are largely of the same nature while he was stationed in Washington D.C. and then again in San Francisco. However much of Gamon's 1952 letters which emanate from the last half of the year are written from various locations in Japan where Gamon was apparently providing naval support during the Korean War. As in the earlier letters Gamon mentions his piloting activities but without a great deal of detail. As with most letters written during the Second World War and in Korea military letters were subject to censors; several of the letters here exhibit approval stamps from the censors. Helen's twenty-five letters to Gamon report much from the home front including family news and the activities of their children; in one early letter Helen has drawn herself as a pregnant stick figure. The collection contains much to mine for researchers looking into marital relationships in the mid-20th century. unknown‎

‎[Latin America]. [World War II]. [Propaganda]‎

‎Libertad de Palabra. Una de las Cuatro Libertades por las Que Luchan los Aliados caption title‎

‎Washington DC: El Coordinador de Asuntos Interamericanos 1942. Very good. Pictorial lithograph 20 x 14.25 inches printed in red gray yellow and black. Minor surface wear mild creasing light dust-soiling a few pinholes. A rare poster issued by the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs CIAA during World War II attempting to sway public opinion in Latin America to the Allied side. The CIAA was established by executive order in July 1941 in order to distribute news advertising film reels and more to and from Latin America to counter Italian and German propaganda campaigns in the region. The text of the present poster translates from the Spanish as "Freedom of Speech. One of the four freedoms for which the Allies are fighting." The central image features an open-mouthed face breaking open a large swastika which is itself on fire. A mildly subtle message that free speech destroys fascism. The poster was designed by noted Russian-American graphic designer and photographer Alexey Brodovitch whose printed credit appears at top right; Brodovitch is most well-known for his art direction of Harper's Bazaar from 1934 to 1958. A powerful visual display with only one copy reported in OCLC at MOMA though we also find two other institutional holdings at the United States Holocaust Museum and the Hoover Institute. ‎Fort Richardson Ak: March 1 1945. Very good plus. 8pp. of text folded accordion style folded out to a full-page map on verso. Light soiling and toning. A seemingly unrecorded guide and map to Fort Richardson located near Anchorage Alaska. The fort opened in 1941 as the headquarters for the United States Army in Alaska. For a brief time Fort Richardson served as a holding center for fifteen Japanese American internee families. The present guide "was prepared primarily for the information and guidance of military personnel new to Fort Richardson. It presents the rules regulations and facilities of the Post for easy reference." The facilities included officers' clubs theatres a library skating rink ski bowl and much more. A total of thirty-eight of these facilities are keyed to the map of the fort printed on the verso. When folded the pamphlet measures 6 x 4 inches and folds out to a total of 12 x 15.75 inches. ‎[African Americana]. [Civil War]‎

‎Pair of Muster Rolls Documenting the Officers and Enlisted Men of Company A 19th Regiment of Colored Troops While Serving in Virginia During the Civil War‎

‎Chaffins Farm Va 1865. Very good. Two partially-printed documents completed in manuscript. Original folds a few short tears or separations at crossfolds. A rare pair of muster rolls recording details of the service of an African-American infantry company while stationed in Virginia over a two-month period at the outset of the final year of the Civil War. The first of these two muster rolls records details for seven officers a surgeon a chaplain and four sergeants at Chaffin’s Farm Virginia. We assume that the officers chaplain and surgeon were white and that the sergeants were likely African Americans. The document includes place and date of enlistment; where when and by whom mustered; the last date of pay; and room for comments about the current status of each individual. There are also comments about promotions and demotions absences due to sickness detached duty leave and more.

The more interesting and detailed muster roll records two months of activity of the 19th Regiment’s Company A from December 31 1864 to February 28 1865 also at Chaffin's Farm. This muster roll lists three officers five sergeants seven corporals and almost eighty privates including one deceased soldier who died of pneumonia in January 1865. The document also includes place and date of enlistment; where when and by whom mustered; the last date of pay; and room for comments about the current status of each man. Comments when present include details about promotions and demotions absences due to sickness detached duty leave and so forth. The enlisted men in the 19th Regiment came mostly from Maryland. The enlisted soldiers here signed up throughout 1864 in various counties throughout Maryland as well as Accomack County Virginia and Washington D.C. for a period of three years and were recruited by a variety of colonels. The inspection report on the verso appraises the company as "Good" in all six categories evaluated: discipline instruction military appearance arms accoutrements and clothing.

The 19th Regiment of United States Colored Troops was organized at Camp Stanton Maryland on Christmas Day 1863 and served over the next four years mainly in Maryland and Virginia and following the war in Texas. The regiment saw action at James River the Wilderness Petersburg Richmond Bermuda Hundred and were present at the surrender of Lee’s Confederacy at Appomattox Court House in April 1865. After further service at Brownsville and the Rio Grande in Texas the regiment was mustered out on January 25 1867. The Regiment does not appear to have been involved in any named battles or skirmishes during the two month pay period recorded in the present documents. unknown‎

‎Vindicacion del General Parrodi wrapper title‎

‎San Luis Potosi: Imprenta del Estado a Cargo de V. Carillo 1847. Near fine. 17pp. Original decorative wrappers stitched as issued. Light toning to wraps. Internally clean. A vigorous self defense by General Anastasio Parrodi against attacks on his conduct in his withdrawal from Tampico during the Mexican-American War. Parrodi a Cuban by birth joined the Mexican army in the early years of independence and rose through the ranks due in no small part to his personal friendship with Santa Anna. When the Mexican leader called on Parrodi's garrison to join the forces heading north to confront Taylor at Saltillo his swift exit from Tampico left unguarded the city and a large stockpile of munitions both of which were swiftly captured by the Americans. In this pamphlet Parrodi reprints official orders and documentation in the hopes of demonstrating that he acted correctly rather than treasonously in his abandonment of the city as was being charged in newspaper attacks against his character. ‎[Spanish-American War]. [American Judaica]. Peixotto, Daniel‎

‎Archive of Manuscript Letters and Personal Papers by Captain Daniel Peixotto the First Jewish-American Army Officer to Die in the Spanish-American War Sent to His Family During His Service‎

‎Mostly Guantanamo or Santiago Cuba 1898. Very good. Twenty-one autograph letters signed by Peixotto written on a variety of papers including a reconstituted envelope totaling ninety-six pages and approximately 14000 words plus a manuscript postcard a manuscript telegram eight contemporary portrait photographs of Peixotto a handful of letters authored by others a commemorative medal and a small group of assorted documents and ephemera. General overall wear with occasional fold line separations. An important archive of highly-descriptive letters original contemporary photographs and supporting materials written by or pertaining to Daniel Levy Maduro Peixotto a notable Jewish-American officer who died in service in Cuba during the occupation of the island just after the Spanish-American War. Daniel Levy Maduro Peixotto 1854-1898 was born into a distinguished Sephardic Jewish family in New York which had once emigrated to the United States from Spain where he was a pharmacist and state militia member. By 1888 he relocated to Washington and held various positions: in the census office as an insurance agent and in various posts in the district militia. When the Spanish-American war broke out he accepted a regular Army appointment as a lieutenant and quartermaster in the 3rd United States Volunteers soon became a captain and served as the provost marshal of the army's base at Guantanamo. He is one of just thirty-two regular Army officers listed in Cyrus Adler's 1900 "Preliminary List of Jewish Soldiers and Sailors Who Served in the Spanish-American War" -- and the only one of those officers who died in service when he succumbed to yellow fever in October 1898. The present archive contains twenty-three letters written by Captain Peixotto in 1898 some from training in the United States but mostly during his Spanish-American War service in Cuba. Nineteen of Peixotto's letters are written to his wife Ida Solomons Peixotto; three are to his father-in-law Adolphus Simeon Solomons 1826-1910 a notable New York merchant and philanthropist; and the remaining letter was written to his daughter Irma Peixotto.

Peixotto's letters are mostly long and detailed with the majority totaling three or more pages. Peixotto begins writing home from training in Washington D.C. and various locations in Georgia but over half of the letters emanate from his time in Cuba. The letters cover a myriad of topics naturally centering on his service in Cuba and the people and scenery he encounters there. He also writes about his daily activities and those of his fellow officers his appointments and promotions ordnance officer quartermaster and eventually provost marshal and military governor a visit to San Juan Hill where he also saw an American military cemetery observes sick and emaciated Spanish prisoners expresses racist sentiments about various Cubans and much more. The first two letters are written to Peixotto’s father-in-law Adolphus Solomons an observant Sephardic Jew who counseled local and national Jewish leaders on important issues of the day. Solomons had previously played a pivotal role in convincing Abraham Lincoln to allow Jews to serve as military chaplains during the Civil War. He also served on Ulysses S. Grant’s presidential inauguration committee in 1873 and in 1881 helped Clara Barton found the Red Cross. On May 24 Peixotto writes to his wealthy prominent father-in-law to announce that he has joined the Army: "You know I have struggled for many years to properly support my family and how unsuccessful I have been and here comes the chance of winning fame & promotion and being properly paid for my services the chance of a lifetime."

Peixotto arrived in Cuba in late August just after the end of fighting on Armistice Day August 12 1898. His regiment was assigned to Cuba to establish an occupation after the invading forces had been decimated by yellow fever. He writes from the regiment's new headquarters at Guantanamo on August 22 and by August 29 had secured a house with other officers and employed "an English-speaking colored woman to cook for us." Another section of his August 29 bears mentioning especially considering how Peixotto died: "The weather here is delightful and were it not for the fleas and mosquitos & the bad water this would be lovely."

On September 19 he notes "our trip to the north coast of Cuba shipping Spanish soldiers to Spain.the officers with parrots roosters & cats galore all in a beautiful state of filth." He complains about his Colonel Ray: "I cannot understand the old man. He wants me with him everywhere he goes & seems to take delight occasionally in cussing me. By Jove I've worked." This letter was one of several written on liberated Spanish stationery; Peixotto points out with delight the watermark "A.S.S." as it matches his father-in-law's initials. His September 21 letter includes a nice description of his work: "Companies E. K. & L. left here with Col. Ray last night at nine for Guantanamo & I superintended the loading of the vessel all day with provisions wagons mules & other supplies. Captain Wilson with Company D which has been at Siboney will leave here Friday for Guantanamo & that will make eight companies in Guantanamo." This letter is accompanied by a printed menu sent home by Peixotto who annotated it on the front: "In Guantanamo Harbor Cuba while assisting in transporting Spanish prisoners on board."

On September 22 Peixotto describes a sighting of the American-allied Cuban independence fighter General Calixto García watching troops "escort General Garcia & his staff from the boat to the palace.Ah here they come band playing flags flying Genls Lawton & Garcia their staffs & crowd of people crying viva-viva-viva Cubano.Ah here comes Garcia & his staff -- a fine looking old man & such a noise. Let us hope that now everything will be fixed properly & no more trouble ensue." On September 26 Peixotto announces ominously that "I have been in contact with yellow fever right in Guantanamo. It was all around us & some of our brave fellows have died & many are still suffering." He describes a visit to Santiago's San Juan Hill: "I rode to San Juan Hill & saw the tree under which Genl Shafter Whalen & Toral made their historic agreement the July 17 surrender. I have several pieces of it." A fragment of this historic ceiba tree known as the "Peace Tree" is present here. Peixotto continues: "Many graves of our dead are in evidence and all have 'head boards' neatly and properly put up with the names & regiment of the brave fellows It was a sad sight."

On October 4 Peixotto describes his prominent role at Guantanamo: "I am some pumpkin in this place. I am a sort of Military Governor &.keep things in shape. I have an orderly.who speaks Spanish perfectly and accompanies me everywhere. I go to headquarters and issue ration tickets to the poor and needy. I have arranged so that they form a square two or three deep about forty feet square and I pass along and give the tickets as I see fit. It is a hard matter not to discriminate. If you could only see the people men women and children who hold out their hands and beg 'deme una pappillet" & the kids 'dernir una'.then I receive the respectable poor in my office. Many of the people I mean respectable people are in want but they keep clean & it is a pleasure to give them 'pappillets.'" Peixotto's October 7 letter includes further ominous notes on his own good health and the "fevers" reported in Cuba noting that "Don't believe the news you hear about fevers &c here." He counters the report of sixty deaths by yellow fever in the First Battalion stating that the number is only nine. He then adds a small drawing and description of his Cuban bedstead with mosquito netting.

On October 9 he describes at length his service as part of the delegation to accept the arms of the rebel leader General Perez the only officer who "came in to lay down arms of the Cuban army and also to celebrate or assist in celebrating with the citizens the 30th anniversary of the 'Declaration of Independence of Cuba.' Poor Cubans they are really not free yet but nearer so than when under Spanish rule." He then takes three pages to describe the march and celebration which reads in part: "Viva Cuba!! Viva America!! Cuba Libre!! Viva Perez!! Viva McKinley!! & Wilson says that every cry was Viva Peixotto!! He doesn't understand much Spanish anyway for I did not hear such a cry. At any rate it was a grand display. Flowers were pelted at us.& the 'Band played on.' The celebrating lasted for two days."

In his penultimate letter Peixotto writes to his daughter about "the many excellent productions of your prolific pen." Irma had previously sent poems to her father and she later became a novelist magazine writer and minor artist. He further details various gifts other officers plant to give to Irma and devotes twelve lines to describing the food served in the Mess Hall commenting: "We have a colored cook from St. Thomas W.I. who speaks broken English you'd think it was Irish. We try to have as good a time as possible & do you know I'm gaining in flesh & feeling good." Accompanying this letter is the aforementioned cutting from the Peace Tree upon which Peixotto wrote "San Juan Hill / Peace Tree / Santiago de Cuba." The piece is folded into stiff paper which Peixotto has annotated "San Juan peace tree: Fact. I cut it & have more."

Peixotto's last letter is dated from Guantanamo on October 16 with postscripts through October 18 professing good health and commenting on recent events. This letter is jam-packed with interesting content including striking observations about the Cuban generals: "General Perez & Gen. Castillo are now in town & the dances &c which are going on makes it interesting. Perez must be a half breed for his daughter & her daughter have more 'nggr' in them than white. General Castillo is a fine man being a pure blooded Cuban and speaking English fluently." He also comments on the American support of poor Cubans: "We have had frequent conferences and have both come to the conclusion that the U.S. is feeding a lot of beggars who will not even try to get work as long as they are fed. Somebody is making lots of money out of this business." He further describes some of the women he encountered at a dance as well as the "danze" itself in racial terms: "Some were quite pretty & some were pure blood but most were Mulattos or a combination of Negro & Cubans. The Danze is a sort of a motion of the hips being the proper caper. We left early 12 o'clock & went to look in at a real nggr dance and found it just about the same except that most were nggrs though there were some white men officers on Gen. Perez staff being prominent. I imagine that they would first go to Perez' house & dance & then come to the 'Nig' place and dance." He again notes his good health stating that "I fortunately have had no occasion to take medicine & have been extremely well" and details some of his health regimen. He concludes this letter hoping to see his wife and daughter in Cuba the next month. Sadly six days later Peixotto died.

Following Peixotto's letters are a few letters of sympathy from Peixotto's fellow soldiers. In an October 31 letter from Colonel T.S. Wylly he delivers the bad news to Peixotto's wife: "A courier from Guantanamo who arrived here this morning brought us the sad news of your husband's death and it has cast a gloom over all the American troops here." Two other letters of sympathy from his New York militia regiment dated November 1898 are also included. In addition to the letters the present collection includes manuscript military orders by or concerning Peixotto; a pencil list of officers in Peixotto's regiment dated July 1898; five photographs of Peixotto in militia uniform New York and District of Columbia; another snapshot photograph of Peixotto dining with fellow officers in Guantanamo with pencil captions identifying each subject; a typescript poem by his daughter titled "The Wise Recruit" from 1898; and a 1900 medal issued by the State of New York "to one who served the nation with honor" in its original Dieges & Clust box.

"Son of Moses Levy Maduro Peixotto 1830-90; captain of the Third Regiment United States Volunteer Infantry; born in New York March 17 1854; died at Guantanamo Cuba Oct. 24 1898 from the effects of fever contracted during the Spanish-American war. For many years he was connected with the Seventh Regiment State of New York as corporal of Company B and received the faithful service medal in that regiment. After his removal to Washington he served on General Ordway's staff as captain and aide-de-camp 1888. At the outbreak of the Spanish-American war he volunteered and served with the Third United States Volunteer Infantry first as first lieutenant and acting quartermaster and then as captain of Company D. At the time of his death he was military governor and provost marshal of Guantanamo. He married Ida Solomons daughter of Adolphus S. Solomons in 1880. His only child Irma R. M. Peixotto was born in New York Jan. 10 1881. She is a frequent contributor to the periodicals of the day and to children's magazines both as writer and illustrator" - Jewish Encyclopedia 1906.

An engaging portrait and poignant record of occupied Cuba through the eyes of a doomed Jewish-American officer who played an important role in the occupation. unknown‎

‎Mexico City: February 15 1847. Near fine. 1pp. Quarto on a folded folio sheet. A rare Mexican decree in which the acting Vice President of Mexico Valentin Gomez Farías gives President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna permission to leave office and fight the Mexican-American War in person. Shortly following the date that this announcement was made Santa Anna gathered roughly 14000 troops to fight General Zachary Taylor’s army of 5000 men at the Battle of Buena Vista. The proclamation is largely ceremonial since Santa Anna had already been in the field with his army for several weeks but it is nevertheless an interesting artifact of the northern campaign of the Mexican-American War. Signed in print by the Minister of Internal and Foreign Affairs José María Ortiz Monasterio; OCLC reports just one copy at Yale. February 15 unknown‎
