A rare momento of the original Redipuglia War Cemetery housing 30,000 graves of soldiers of the Italian Third Army killed between 1915 and 1917. The original cemetery is now replaced by the Redipuglia War Memorial, inaugurated in 1938 in the presence of Mussolini. It is the largest war memorial in Italy with over 100,000 graves (including those of the original interment). A RARE SURVIVAL FROM THE GREAT WAR IN ITALY.‎

Printing code: CN 3050/05. THIS COPY WAS RECEIVED ABOARD HMS JASON ON 28 JANUARY 1907 WITH CONFIRMATORY STAMP ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. Loosely inserted are three subsequent and relevant Circular Letters, the first also with HMS JASON stamp: a) New Procedure concerning Surveys, and Closing of Watertight Doors; b) Examination of Boilers, Closing Watertight Doors etc; c) Use of Lime in Boilers of HM Ships. HMS JASON (1892-1917) was an ALARM-class Torpedo Gunboat. Shortly after receipt of this copy she was converted to minesweeper and served with the Nore Destroyer Flotilla in WWI until April 1917 when she struck a mine off the Hebridean island of Coll and sank with the loss of thirty lives. EXTREMELY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION.‎

Churchill's introduction (written March 10 1941) urges the population to 'STAND FIRM' and 'CARRY ON'. There follow a lengthy series of instructions to be followed in the case of an enemy invasion, culminating: ' Do not tell the enemy anything. Do not give him anything. Do not help him in any way.' ‎FRENCH Field Marshal Sir John‎

‎A.L.s from Sir John French to Florence Henniker. A.L.s FROM SIR JOHN FRENCH TO FLORENCE HENNIKER‎

‎8vo., 4 leaves with single fold, a near fine copy. Written and signed on Army & Navy Club stationery, the letter is dated 19 February 1904. The writer apologises for a delay in meeting due to an attack 'of my old enemy - malaria' . He is now back to 'War Office business' and eagerly awaits a forthcoming meeting: 'I want another talk with you very much'. Field Marshal Sir John Denron Pinkstone French (1852-1925), 1st Earl of Ypres, distinguished himself in both the Nile Campaigns and the Boer War. In the Great War he commanded the British Army on the Western Front from 1914-1915 until succeeded by Douglas Haig. Florence Henniker (1855-1923), well-known novelist and socialite. Daughter of Richard Monckton Milnes, she married a British army officer (referred to briefly in the letter) but is perhaps best remembered for her long and close relationship with Thomas Hardy with whom she collaborated on two volumes of short stories.‎

One of the most detailed WWI British divisional histories, well illustrated with both photographs and maps. 'Those who served for any length of time in France will recall that the 47th Division always ranked very high among British troops' (Falls). The 47th was the first Territorial division to be engaged as a formation on the Western Front; it served at Festubert, Loos, the Somme, Messines, Cambrai and in the fiercest actions of 1918. Classic study of the notorious gulf between High Command and the Front Line on the Western Front in 1915, particularly the disastrous generalship of Second Ypres, Neuve Chapelle and Loos. Compiled with free access to the private files of Liddell Hart, it takes its title from the well-known quotation: Ludendorff: 'The English fight like lions.' Hoffman: 'But don't we know that they are lions led by donkeys'. This work is the inspiration for Joan Littlewood's acclaimed stage musical 'Oh, What a Lovely War!'.
