‎[Butcher Family Archive].‎

‎Letters and Documents of the Butcher Family Recording some Family History.‎

‎
Small family archive of letters 10 pieces in all some folio size other basic letter sheet size over 20 pages of text some docketed on reverse. Most pages are aged and browned some chips and tears a few holes at center folds a little staining but otherwise about very good. This family archive begins with a letter dated June 14 1840 and provides a glimpse of life in still early America during the pioneer period. In the first letter which is. from near Danville Missouri daughter Emily Lee and Adam Lee to father Ely Butcher in Randolph Virginia asking for money. Emily complains about poor health but tells him to consider moving out there where good land could be had. Another letter dated September 24 1840 is from Rock Island County Illinois from John H. Butcher to his father Ely in Randolph Virginia. John Butcher a farmer tells his father he is in "tolerable good health" but talks about some hard times where he lives. He comments on the rivers being very low and it appears his shipping costs were double what they should be. He stays he finds times very hard in this country harder than expected and adds he couldn't get $1000 for his home at that time. He even makes a comment about a split in government but that the Whigs may feel they won writing not totally clear on this comment. On January 2 1842 from Danville Missouri we see another letter from Emily Lee to her father Ely Butcher in Randolph Virginia. This letter has a sad tone as Emily complains she hasn't gotten a letter from her father in almost two years despite writing to him a few times. She says she feels neglected by her father and brothers and times are very hard. She mentions store credit is not available and they lost a horse. According to Emily her in-laws are no help and she has eight children to take care of. She tells her father she will see him in the spring and she expects him to do something about her situation. Seems like Ely's kids are often in need and asking dad for help. On August 20 1844 John Butcher In Rock Island Illinois to Ely Butcher in Beverly Randolph County Virginia appears to be visited by his sister and his brother-in-law and sister Adam Lee and Emily lee. The farm is doing well and he indicates that oat and corn prices are "tolerable" and he expects to produce 800 bushes of corn and wheat. It appears his sister wants a divorce and it also appears John asks his father to intercede with his uncle Peyton about the land he uses. He seems to be tired of being a renter. He asks his father to negotiate a deal and help him pay for it. He apologizes for the tone of the letter but sounds a little desperate. There are also what appears to be some detailed receipts for the goods of Ely Butcher the dates appear to be 1842 and 1843. In fourth receipt the date is unclear but could be as late as 1866. A final document is a marriage certificate for Hannah Hart Butcher and the date is November 22 1911.
‎

‎American Caricatures Pertaining to the Civil War.‎

‎
Oblong 8vo cloth gilt title on top cover and spine illustrated. Top hinge a little weak but firm some extremity wear and back cover wear normal aging; otherwise very good plus. This little work includes a short history of political caricature from James Gillray to Thomas Nast. This is a charming collection of political humor that includes views on major events to those that have long been forgotten. The themes are of course relevant to the day and express sentiments at that time. Some are racist like a cartoon of Abe Lincoln sitting on a woodpile labeled the 'Republican Platform' showing a black person under the pile and with a caption "The Nigger in the Woodpile." Another cartoon features a general representing the Union hitting various Southern leaders linked to secession with a club.
Brentano's,‎

‎[War of 1812].‎

‎Report In Part Of The Committee Appointed On So Much Of The President’s Message As Respects Our Foreign Relations. November 22 1808…‎

‎
Pamphlet 8vo paperbound 16 pp. Partially disbound but still in tact. Normal aging and browning with some chips and folds at the extremities. Also slight fold at the center and early owner’s signature on title page. About very good. Very interesting pamphlet prepared during the Madison administration that takes a look at the challenges facing a new country. For the most part the report addresses the belligerent acts of England and France prior to the War of 1812. The report also challenges the legality of the British blockade and the taking of our ships on the high seas. Importantly it points out that France is no better than the English in this respect and that it would be hard to justify war against one without the same treatment of the other. However the authors were also very realistic about going to war with both England and France who were "two of the most powerful nations in the world". The report recommends that we not submit to French and English legal rationalizations for their actions and that we not allow their ships into our ports. Wisely it also suggests we improve our defenses. The OCLC seems to locate only a couple of copies. OCLC.
A. & G., Printers,‎

Minor folds one small hole at center fold not affecting text normal aging and toning. Overall in very good condition. James Rikert who enlisted in 1861 was discharged in 1862 for disability. He joined as a 21 year old private at Fort Wayne Michigan and mustered into Company G of the MI 5th Infantry. He sent this letter to Celia Gibson as a follow-up to a letter he sent a week earlier concerning their march on Manassas. He reports heavy rains that postponed the march but expects to march the next day. While he mentions his sadness at the loss of his grandmother he makes a point of telling Celia this could be his last letter. "This may be the last letter perhaps that you will ever get from me but if I live through the battle you will son hear from me again and if not you will know that I have gone to my lovely home and that I died as a Christian." ‎Manuscript Letter From a Union Soldier in Memphis Tennessee.‎

‎Letter sheet 8x10 4 pages 3 1/2 pages of text. Some very minor bends at edges a couple of very minor nicks creased a little slight aging and browning; otherwise in really nice condition. This highly legible letter to a father from his son talks about more than the "usual" life in an army camp. There are certainly routine matters covered like receiving letters from family members and requests for money but he also talks about his legal misfortunes. While it is unclear what issues are involved it is clear he has some military legal problems which he hopes to resolve by the time his regiment is 'mustered." The letter makes it sound like it is something important and probably related to his military standing. His father appears to suggest that he should take his case to Washington but the son decides to wait it out. The son Jon indicates that while he feels badly over his misfortunes he really feels badly for his friends and relatives. This suggests along with a comment about handling the impact on public opinion that this case was a visible one. He also complains about the cost of living in the South which he says is twice what it is in the North and indicates he pays $10 per week for boarding. That would seem to be very high when measured at a soldier's pay during this period. He does throw in a couple of comments about the war including that "Sherman too is still in successful pursuit." he also states that nothing is heard from General Smith "but his safety and success is a thing assured."‎

‎4 page lettersheet 9 3/4x 8 1 1/2 pages of text with docketing and commentary by several officials on the 4th page. Some soiling and aging to the last page a little toning; otherwise very good or better. The letter from Woods attempts to resolve what must have been a common problem in the Union Army during the Civil War which was the red tape involved in battle field promotions. Woods 'was mustered into the Service of the United Sates as an enlisted man. on the 29th day of July 1861 at Washington City D.C. by Lieut. Jno. Elwood. On the 14 day of Decbr. I was promoted to the 2nd Lieutenancy in said Co. vice Lieutenant Donaldson died May 15th 1862 but did not receive my Commission as such until 5th day pf March 1863 since which time I have actually performing the duty of 2nd Lieut. in said company and as such I have been on the muster and pay rolls for March and April. I would respectfully ask the Order mustering me out as an enlisted man being 2nd Serge. of said Company when I received my commission and ordering my muster in as 2nd Lieut. to date from March 5 1863. I have made efforts to be mustered but without success. " Perhaps even more interesting are the comments by several officials on the forth page trying to cut through the 'red tape'.‎

The author who calls himself Green-Back seems to object to the failures of politicians of his day and in fact this is an open letter to the 37th Congress. Sounds like he has Copperhead leanings but his key message is that it was time for the Representatives and represented come to an understanding. He seems to think that Congress is too busy or distracted with the needs of slaves and related issues to take care of other business. According to Green-Back Congress doesn't seem to have much time for other affairs because of their plans "for the full development of their much admired and more beloved Congo men". He also seems dissatisfied with the press who he suggests instigated or helped cause the war and whom only present a one sided view of the war.‎

Legible probably a second copy made for legal purposes signed by author some wear at folds and some staining second sheet split and cracked a bit but text page in very good condition. Interesting letter that appears to have the wrong date on the front page. What appears to be January 20 1706 should read January 20 1786 according to the docketted date on the last page. The letter is written by Stephen Lush 1753-1825 to Jellis Jacob Fonda 1751-1839. It relates to taxes on land in New York owned jointly by Lush and Fonda. John Lansing an attorney and former delegate to the Constitutional Convention seems to have resquested the payment of one shilling per acre on the 40000 of acres they own jointly. Provides some interesting content on land taxation for the period. Lush practiced law in Albany until the War for Independence; he was commissioned a captain and saw action in New York City but was captured by the British. Major Fonda was considered one of the first patriots of Schenectady and after Lexington he formed a company of Minutemen. He fought in the Campaign against Burgoyne and at the Battle of Bemis Heights. Fonda organization website. ny education government website.‎
