[PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF US FORCES IN HOKKAIDO - KOREAN WAR PERIOD].
米州兵輸送. Beishūhei yusō. Muroran Welcomes the Thunderbirds. 25 April 1951.
Japan. 1951. Eight black and white photographs 20.5 x 25.5cm each captioned in Japanese the handmade album is titled and dated in ink 23.5 x 32.8cm 9pp cord ties. One photograph has been removed card leaves and covers are browned surface of upper cover abraded in places some other minor wear but the photographs are in very good condition. A private album containing eight high-quality large-format photographs showing US forces being welcomed to the northern Japanese city of Muroran Hokkaido on 25 April 1951 - at the height of the Korean War. The first two photos show the US forces being welcomed by a local brass band. There is then a shot of US officers and Japanese officials standing under a large sign saying "Welcome Thunderbirds - Muroran City" indicating that the troops being welcomed are from the 45th Infantry Division nicknamed the Thunderbirds one of two US Army National Guard units engaged in the Korean War and recruited largely from the state of Oklahoma. <br> <br>The 45th Infantry Division received their initial training for combat in Korea in the US itself in 1950 and then sailed from New Orleans to Japan in early 1951 arriving at the ports of Otaru and Muroran in Hokkaido April of that year. From there they were sent for further training at Camp Crawford a US military base on the outskirts of the city of Sapporo and at a newly created camp south of Chitose before being transfered to Korea in December 1951. The album also contains two photos of the ships "General C.G. Morton" and "General William Weigel" which were built during World War II and used as a troop transport ship during the Korean War and were presumably among the ships which brought the 45th Infantry Division to Japan. Other images show local officials explaining the geography of the region to US officers as they peruse a large map and a Japanese woman beign presented with a badge by an American officer. <br> <br>Muroran was one of many Japanese ports whose life was transformed by the mass arrival of UN mostly American forces during the Korean War although the town's role in the war is less well documented than the roles of ports like Yokohama Kobe and Sasebo. These pictures give a vivid impression of the Korean war journeys of US troops and of Hokkaido during the Korean War. . unknown

Black Troops, Civil War
1863 Pamphlet Argues For Enlisting Negro Soldiers: "There exist four millions of an oppressed race who would gladly aid us in the war we are carrying on but from regard to the feelings and interests of our enemies we have hitherto refused their assistance.
Colored Soldiers General Washington and General Jackson on Negro Soldiers. Philadelphia: Henry Carey Baird 1863. First edition. 8 pages 5.75" x 9" inches. This pamphlet was issued to urge the enlistment of African American soldiers in the Union Army: " We are in the midst of a great war for the existence of free institutions. No one can be so blind as not to see that the triumph of the Confederacy would insure the overthrow of rational liberty." The author—anonymous but clearly abolitionist in sympathy—argues that it is both strategic and moral to enlist African Americans noting “In the heart of the Rebel States there exist four millions of an oppressed race who would gladly aid us in the war we are carrying on but from regard to the feelings and interests of our enemies we have hitherto refused their assistance.†The author cites “authentic documents†including letters from George Washington and Andrew Jackson the Journals of Congress proceedings from the Rhode Island General Assembly and recollections from army officers. <br /> <br /> Particularly vivid is a passage from Jackson’s 1814 address to Black troops in New Orleans: “From the shores of Mobile I collected you to arms… I knew that you could endure hunger and thirst and all the hardships of war… You surpass my hopes.†Elsewhere the pamphlet references Revolutionary-era battles including the service of free Black soldiers at Cambridge Massachusetts who “served in the ranks with white men†and concludes with a practical and urgent argument: “By utilizing this element the Government can secure the services of 700000 able-bodied men… Will not posterity hold to a severe account the statesman who would neglect to use so powerful a force for the suppression of the Rebellion†A forceful piece of Civil War propaganda that blends strategic argument with moral conviction. Rare and deeply evocative of its political moment. Toning but overall very clean. Small separation along spine of final leaf. In very good condition. unknown

Mexican-American War, Vera Cruz
Mexican-American War Landing of the Troops at Vera Cruz Chromolithograph - 1848
Mexican-American War Art Landing of the Troops at Vera Cruz. Philadelphia: Wagner & McGuigan. 1848. Measures 14" x 19.75". Print measures 12" x 18.25". Though the artist of this colored print is unknown it seems to be based on the original lithograph from A Pictorial History of Mexico and the Mexican War by John Frost 1848. The vibrant painting depicts a myriad of U.S. soldiers stationed on the shore of Veracruz Mexico several canons have been loaded on shore and a raised American flag. In the background are several ships and small rowboats where more American soldiers make their way to the beach. The American siege took place from 1946-1948 following the 1845 American annexation of Texas which Mexico still considered its territory. Subsequently this chromolithograph was printed during the final year of the invasion after the signing of the Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty which granted the U.S. ownership of Texas. The image was made by 19 century chromolithography where each color was printed by a separate stone. Framed in a waxed wooden frame behind glass backed in brown craft paper and has a horizontal wire hanging. The bottom two corners seem to be clipped or folded on the margins. Some mild fading and original creasing from folds. Overall very good condition. unknown

Black Soldiers, Civil War
1863 "Negro Soldiers Speech" by Missouri Politician James S. Rollins during the Civil War
Negro Soldiers Speech of Hon. James S. Rollins of Missouri Delivered in the House of Representatives Feb. 2 1863. Washington D.C.: L. Towers & Co. 1863. 8 pages. 5.5" x 8.5". Rollins was a nineteenth-century Missouri politician and lawyer notable for his role in establishing the University of Missouri. In this speech Rollins while a committed Unionist comes out against black soldiers entering into combat roles in the Union Army. He addresses Speaker of the House Schuyler Colfax and is concerned that African Americans desire for vengeance against their Southern oppressors would bring the country to ruin. Rollins' support for the war extended only as far as the maintenance of the Union stating that "whenever it becomes a war of subjugation and of conquest or dwindles into a miserable abolition war to free the slaves of the South. then the sooner it is abandoned the better for the entire country." Despite the dissent of Rollins and the sizable element who shared his views Lincoln other leading Republicans like Speaker Colfax and military brass saw the value in forming African American regiments. In fact not long after the 1st Kansas Colored Infantry Regiment becomes were the first black unit to see combat in the Civil War as well as being the first black regiment organized in a northern state. The regiment served primarily in Missouri engaging the Confederates several times including at the Battle of Honey Springs. This speech is a interesting demonstration of the range of opinion within the Civil War era Republican Party and Unionist side more broadly. This speech has been separated from a larger volume; its binding is intact. Foxing along margins some mild toning. Very good condition overall. unknown

World War II, Navy
Sea Cat Sailor's Newspaper from Aboard Naval Ship 1945
Sea Cat News. December 1945. Volume III No 7. Newspaper believed to be composed by sailors aboard the USS Sea Cat a Baleo-class submarine that earned 3 stars for operations during World War II. Measures 8 x 13 inches. 6 typewritten pages stapled. Drawing of cat wearing Navy ship with the words "Land ahead!" beneath. Typed stories relating to news from Washington football scores between the Army and Navy commentary on the war trials beginning in Nuremberg and stories from visits to shore. "Yesterday we listened to the Army-Navy game. Let us remember that one of the chief ingredients going into the building of either national or individual greatness is the ability to take either Victory or defeat in the proper spirit. The Nation that plays well also fights well" reads one editorial. Includes several comics one called the "Dreamboat Barnacle" in which a sailor tells his doctor that dreams of a beautiful woman are making him ill. The tone of the paper is light and humorous marked by a kind of cavalier cheer befitting men kept in tight quarters under stress recently relieved by war's end and the promise of homecoming. Creased down the middle where folded. Wrinkled at edges does not affect text. A charming look at life aboard a Navy ship at the end of World War II. Overall very good condition. unknown

Black Troops, Civil War
Profile on Black Union Army Troops in Harper's Weekly 1863
Harper's Weekly: A Journal of Civilization. New York: March 14 1963. Vol. VII - No. 324. 15 pages. 16" x 11" inches. This edition of the Harper's Weekly portrays on its cover a black Union Army recruit who is being trained to use the Minie rifle a weapon widely used in the Civil War. Former slaves and freedmen alike flocked the Union Army after Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862 which had a provision allowing for the first Black units to be formed. Has a two page spread illustration of a Black unit charging into a Confederate line amidst a chaotic battle scene. A brief article gives several examples of bravery and cunning displayed by Black units thus far and predicts "that with proper drill and training the negroes will be the steadiest rank and file in the world." Harper's Weekly was published from 1857 to 1916 and was one of the most extensive sources of coverage on the American Civil War. Pages delicate; nearly separated from fold line. Browning and light soiling throughout but text and illustrations are clear. In good condition overall. unknown

"A very intelligent colored man has said that his people there would have been much further advanced had the State seceded and shared the fate of the more Southern states." A slave state close to the capitol but bordering north and south Maryland was uniquely situated the site of some of the first fatalities of the war. Civil War
A vivid recounting of the cruelty of Confederate soldiers
Howard Colonel Percy. The Barbarities of the Rebels as Shown in Their Cruelty to the Federal Wounded and Prisoners; In Their Outrages Upon Union Men; In the Murder of Negroes and in Their Unmanly Conduct Throughout the Rebellion. First edition. Providence R.I: Privately printed 1863. 8vo. 40 pages. Original front printed wrapper. This pamphlet provides evidence of the crimes of the Confederate army off the battlefield such as massacres of African-Americans and German-Americans in Texas during the war brutal forced conscriptions the imprisonment and abuse of Union-affiliated women and other nefarious deeds. Written by Colonel Percy Howard a veteran of wars in Europe and Asia this pamphlet has the expressed purpose of agitating against the support the Confederates were receiving from the British who initially supported them largely in part because of their need to secure cheap cotton for their highly productive textile mills. Howard's aim is to illuminate the vicious actions of the CSA and furthermore expose the rotten basis of the slaveocracy to potentially sympathetic parties in Europe. This piece is in fair to good condition as the wrappers are delicate and separated from spine with some paper loss on verso but the interior is clean. unknown

British Military Mission to Italy First World War Missione Militare di Sua Maesta Britannica Addetta al Comando Supremo Ital
First World War: British Military Mission to Italy. Four Autograph Letters Signed from 'Charlie' to 'Nonna' with reference to 'intrigues' his superior Delmé-Radcliffe and a visit to Austrian trenches in 'the Caroo'.
All four on letterheads of the 'Missione Militare di Sua Maestà Britannica Addetta al Comando Supremo Italia' British Military Mission Italian Army in the Field . 30 December 1916; 10 January and 16 and 20 June 1917. Four interesting and evocative letters. The identity of the writer is not known. All but the third letter are addressed to 'Dearest Nonna' who appears to be married to 'George' and living in Viareggio. ONE: 30 December 1916. 2pp. 4to. 'This place is simply a nest of intrigues and I wish I had some of your dear familys clever brains to sort things out a bit & put them right. I loathe the double-faced dealing necessary to combat intrigues and am afraid I may lose my temper one day & tell them what I think of them - & that wd be fatal. Besides one wants the subtle brains of your sex to <truly> unravel matters in such a tangled skein. Can't you “Marconi†me some' He continues with reference to a visit by 'the nice 16 year old son of Ninettes friend' there is a further reference to 'Carlo & Ninette' who has invited him 'out to Martignacco'. Long signed pencil postscript. TWO: 10 January 1917. 2pp. 4to. 'Delme Radcliffe Brig. Gen.Sir Charles Delmé-Radcliffe 1864-1937 Chief of the Mission is back from Rome but news of the Conference is not allowed to leak out tho' I suppose we shall hear about it in time. A Col. Wyndham our Mil Attache at Berne who was in the Rifle Bde has come to stay a few days & I found his most amusing & interesting over the German propaganda in Switzerland. He says that the news from Germany is most cheering for us – that Germany will be starved out unless peace supervenes in 2 months!!!' He has been meeting 'such a lot' of her friends and mentions 'Gulinalli who is a-de-c to a Genl. Sani' 'Young Boris' and 'â€<Nernia Giglieri> whose name I remember in Florence some time back'.
