The British Military Cemetery at Solymár Hungary. Long typescript titled 'The Budapest War Cemetery' including a 'Register of the Graves in the Budapest War Cemetery' with letter by the Hungarian author and photographs and negatives.
Covering letter dated from Budapest Hungary 8 April 1985. 27pp. 8vo. The article on 'The Budapest War Cemetery' is 7pp. 8vo and the accompanying 'Register of the Graves in the Budapest War Cemetery' is 21pp. 8vo. There is also a page of 'Abbreviations to the Register'. A few manuscript emendations. The covering letter is addressed to 'David' and is effusive in its offer of further assistance the author urging 'David' to rewrite the piece as he sees fit. It is signed faintly and undecipherably. The author writes in good but not entirely idiomatic English and has gone to some trouble. The article describes the wartime background to the establishment of 'The English Cemetery at Solymár' from the first man buried there Flight Sergeant Gordon G. Pemberton an Australian pilot of a Wellington bomber shot down on the night of 3 April 1944. The 'Register' lists the 205 graves each with all the information to be found on the tombstone. Also present are four strips of negatives with one larger negative of a single image and a contact sheet strip reproducing the 35 pictures on the negative strips. The last is annotated on the reverse in pencil. Also included are three black and white photographs described as 'three bad prints' in the letter: one of the cemetery in snow and the other two of Pemberton's crashed Wellington bomber. Signed 'Irving Montagu'. 2pp. 8vo. Arranging to dine at Draper's in the face of a clashing invitation. TWO: From Briar Cottage 2 January 1893. 4pp. 12mo. Signed 'Montagu'. A warm letter thanking him and praising his family and 'staunch friends': 'You speak very kindly of success in store for me - not so much for myself as for Cissie his wife born Cecilia Laura Borrell 1859-1910 and the bairn do I wish it might be so - you and I are both fighters . I had my share of rough and tumble before my campaigning experiences during the Russo-Turkish War described in his book 'Camp and Studio' 1890 and feel very deeply that I owe what impetus I have had to a wish to deserve well of such old friends as yourselves to whom Cissie Violet and self again unite in best good wishes'. A postscript refers to 'Rufus' and his return to his studio. THREE: From Irving Cottage 7 January 1893. 1p. 12mo. Signed 'Montagu'. Les Français de Grande-Bretagne Franco-British Liaison Committee Grand Buildings Trafalgar Square London. 4 November 1941. On both sides of a 7.5 x 12 cm card with curved corners. A frail survival heavily aged and worn. The text on the recto is printed in black with the organisation's logo to the left in blue and red. The recto also has a large red 'S' superimposed at centre and carries the two signatures that of Guérille certifying that Guillet has been 'enrolled as a Sympathiser-Member'. Printed on the reverse are the 'Aims of the Association': 'To continue the war at the side of the British Government and of our Allies. To co-operate with General de Gaulle's Free French Forces. To unite all French people. To consolidate the Entente Cordiale. The Association is the only recognised body of loyal French civilians who have pledged themselves to the British Government and General de Gaulle.' Considering the claims made on the reverse of the card it is curious that little information is availaible concerning it. Perhaps it was a movement inspired by De Gaulle's speech at the Albert Hall in March 1941 "Discours prononce par le general de Gaulle a la reunion des Francais de Grande-Bretagne a Londres le 1er mars 1941". Scarce: no copy at the Imperial War Museum and the only other copy traced at the National Library of Scotland.
