‎WORLD WAR II IRAQ HASSAN Faik Faeq‎

‎Poster: If You Plant You Will Win‎

‎Baghdad: S.i. ca.1943-44. Original illustrated poster offset printed in five colors on beige stock measuring 56.75cm x 72.75cm 22.25" x 28.5". Signed "FAIK H" in plate at lower left corner. Two old folds smoothed out trivial wear to intersection of folds at center with a handful of short marginal tears and attendant creases; unbacked; Very Good. Superb example of this agricultural-themed wartime propaganda poster designed by Iraqi painter Faeq Hassan 1914-1992 widely heralded as "the father of Iraqi modern art." Born poor in Baghdad Hassan showed an early aptitude for art. When he was 12 he visited his uncle a gardener in the royal palace for King Faisal I; when the King saw his drawing of a horse drinking from a river he recognized his talent instantly and offered him a scholarship. Faisal died in 1933 while Hassan was still in high school though his successor King Ghazi carried out his father's will and send him to the École des Beaux-Arts Paris in 1935. After returning from Paris Hassan founded Al-Ruwad The Pioneers Group a group of Iraqi artists who eschewed the traditional studio atmosphere; while engaging with nature and choosing the chronicle the daily realities of Iraqi life through their art the group played a critical role in bridging the gap between heritage and modernity. <br/><br/>Little scholarship exists regarding Hassan's activities or artistic output during World War II though the present example suggests he put his talents to some use creating home front propaganda after the Anglo-Iraqi War. The poster depicts a male laborer in traditional garb digging in a field with a bag of seeds tied at his waist beneath the slogan "If You Plant You Will Win" flanked by twin V's. Despite the traditional Iraqi setting the message is similar in tone to the American propaganda campaign encouraging the populace to plant victory gardens to help the war effort. A notably early work by Hassan and a rare survival with no examples found in the auction record and none found in the holdings of any OCLC member institution. cf."Profile: Faik Hassan." ‎THE PROCEEDINGS OF A CONVENTION OF DELEGATES FROM THE STATES OF MASSACHUSETTS CONNECTICUT AND RHODE-ISLAND; AND THE COUNTIES OF CHESHIRE AND GRAFTON IN THE STATE OF NEW-HAMPSHIRE: AND THE COUNTY OF WINDHAM IN THE STATE OF VERMONT; CONVENED AT HARTFORD IN THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT DECEMBER 5TH sic 1814‎

‎Utica: Printed by Merrell and Camp 1815. Octavo pp. 1-3 4-16 disbound. One of many editions printed throughout New England and New York state. The proceedings of a series of secret meetings from 15 December 1814 to 5 January 1815 in Hartford Connecticut of Federalist delegates from Connecticut Rhode Island Massachusetts New Hampshire and Vermont "who were dissatisfied with Pres. James Madison's mercantile policies and the progress of the War of 1812 'Mr. Madison's War' as well as long resentful over the balance of political power that gave the South particularly Virginia effective control of the national government. The more extreme delegates raised the possibility of secession but others sought only to dictate amendments to the Constitution that would protect their interests. Ultimately the convention adopted a strong states' rights position and expressed its grievances in a series of resolutions against military conscription and commercial regulations along with some stringent criticisms of Madison's administration that were agreed to on January 4 1815. Even as the convention finished its business however a British sloop of war was beating its way across the Atlantic with dispatches containing the peace terms that had been agreed to in the Treaty of Ghent ending the war. Moreover as the convention's emissaries approached Washington D. C. they were met by the news of Gen. Andrew Jackson's unexpected victory in the Battle of New Orleans. By the time the emissaries arrived it was no longer possible to serve the kind of ultimatum contained in the convention's report. The war along with the national crisis it had brought about had ended. The secrecy of the Hartford proceedings also contributed to discrediting the convention and its unpopularity was a factor in the demise of the Federalist Party." - Encyclopedia Britannica. Small triangular chip from lower fore-edge margin no text affected top edge trimmed a bit for binding affecting an old signature at the top edge of the title page but not affecting any of the typography a very good copy. ‎THE "VT" OR RADIO PROXIMITY FUZE. SUPPLEMENTAL BASIC INFORMATION PREPARED BY APPLIED PHYSICS LABORATORY THE JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY SILVER SPRINGSMD. Issued by Applied Physics Laboratory The Johns Hopkins University. Released for Publication -- September 20 1945. Copied by: Sylvania Electric Products Inc‎

‎New York: Sylvania Electric Products Inc. 1945. Large octavo 1-2 1-76 77-79 leaves fastened into an Accopress Binder. A proximity fuze is a fuze that detonates an explosive device automatically when the distance to the target becomes smaller than a predetermined value. Proximity fuzes are designed for targets such as planes missiles ships at sea and ground forces. They provide a more sophisticated trigger mechanism than the common contact fuze or timed fuze. The proximity fuze was one of the most important technological innovations of World War II. It was so important that it was a secret guarded to a similar level as the atom bomb project or D-Day invasion. Adm. Lewis L. Strauss wrote that "One of the most original and effective military developments in World War II was the proximity or "VT" fuze. It was of incalculable value to both the Army and Navy . While no one invention won the war the proximity fuze must be listed among the very small group of developments such as radar upon which victory very largely depended." A fine copy. Accompanied by the October 1945 issue of THE SYLVANIA BEAM revealing the existence the weapon which twenty-five Sylvania plants and laboratories had worked on in secret during World War II. #155716 Sylvania Electric Products Inc. unknown books‎

‎WORLD WAR II IN THE PHILIPPINES‎

‎An American GI Fighting In The Philippines Writes About The Conflict: “We’ve Had Casualties But One Has To Expect Some Especially When Fighting An Offensive War - The Japs Being Dug In So Well It Was Almost A Superhumanjob To Clear Out Themâ€‎

‎WORLD WAR II IN THE PHILIPPINES. ALS. 3pg. 6†x 10 ½â€. June 6 1945. Philippine Islands. An autograph letter signed “Claude†an American GI stationed in the Philippines. He wrote on “United States Army†stationery to his friend John about fighting the Japanese: “Dear John Was sure glad to hear from you again Thanks for writing. A lot has happened since I last wrote - but I won't bore you with very much of them - Have seen quite a bit of action. Mostly fighting n razor back mountains either covered with grass or off on another part of the island covered with jungle - It seemed we moved from one land to another - such a change in terrain - I mean like thick jungles vines & dampness at one place & the other so open one could see for miles and miles - even watch the japs digging in miles away with our binoculars. We’ve had casualties but one has to expect some especially when fighting an offensive war - The japs being dug in so well it was almost a superhumanjob to clear out them - Rough going - guess I'm a lucky guy to be in the 60MM Mortar and light Machine Gun platoon - although we were hit some too. Lucky though just wounded were the boys. Well my Platoon Sgt. Went home with a bad ear - got infected someway or other and it really made life miserable for him - so now I'm acting in his compacity - I don't care much for the job but guess I'll have to string along until the end is over which I hope soon. Guess old Nick here was lucky - Had a few close one's too close for comfort. just hope my luck holds on. Guess as far as the point system goes - I'll be in the Army quite awhile yet. Only can figure out 69 points - Quite a jump to dig up 16 more And I've been in this Army 38 months already - Seems like half my life - When I get home I won't know how to act like a civilian - ha - I know one thing I'll have to learn to control my Army slang or else - I'm writing this in our rest area - although we aren't resting as yet - A lot of hard work to build it up & get it in shape first - Haven’t been her long - but it's a nice area - About like Fort Lewis. Pine trees - cold at night need three blankets still my pups get cold and now that the rainy season has set in it reminds me of Fort Lewis more so as we had so much rain there. Have one camp on a golf course - Been quite some time since I played golf - last tie in the Hawaiian Is. on the isle of Moloka! - More or less pasture. I'd send you a v-mail but as far as I know yet they go straight home with out being photographed and I don't think you'd want that kind. So am using the borderless airmail variety - No two cent overprints have showed up in this area as but if they do I'll remember you - Some of my other friends were asking about them too. Mr. Weltack has been sending me a first day cover now and then and I really appreciate it - as I have no way or time to bother with them. Hope I can continue after the war as I really get a kick out of FD. 's F.Fs F.AM's & all the other better covers. I belonged to the AAMS at one time and have been thinking about joining the MACC in the future. Its been a long time since I saw a good game of baseball- Was in 1939 I guess - In Chicago at the Cub park - The Cubs were playing the Giants at the time. My dad & cousin are great Cub fans but me I like to see a good game - The best men win - I used to play a little too. You know how young guys are - getting up a team & trying to lick the neighboring town teams a log of good clean fun. Well John write when you have time. I enjoy hearing from you. Best of Wishes Sincerely Claudeâ€. The letter is in fine condition. unknown books‎

‎WORLD WAR I IN EUROPE LETTER‎

‎An American Living In Vienna Experiences The Beginning Of World War One – “…We Are Still In No Danger As Long As We Stay Here… Every Available Place Is Filled With Wounded Soldiers… Many Americans Went Home When Your Letter Wentâ€‎

‎WORLD WAR I. ALS. 3pgs. November 13 1914. Vienna. An autograph letter signed “Libbie Tappan†by an American living in Vienna at the start of World War One. Tappan writes home to her sister in America concerning wartime conditions in Vienna. She mentions lies of the media and the fear that her letter will be censored: “My Dear Sister: I wrote you a letter sent 21 by a lady who was going home to America. She would amil it in New York. Irene sent one to her Mother she has received an answer to hers. SO I am wondering why I don’t hear from you At that time every thing was excitement. All mails from here was stopped and now we have to leave our letters open. Irene’s Mother wrote her to come home at once but we thought it was to big a risk to run. We had no idea that they were writing all lies until we got hold of an American paper. War was first declared here on account of the to be next king and his wife were killed by the Serbians. There is such a lot to tell but for fear it will never reach you I will only say the German Kaiser is not to blame. The Germans and Austrian Hungarians have never lost a battle we are not starving and there is no…here. All places of amusement were closed trotting was stopped the first of August. Things are beginning to brighten a bit now but there will be no racing until next year. Every available place is filled with wounded soldiers and we don’t see much else but soldiers although there has never been a battle here in Vienna. I am so sorry about Marvin. It seems too bad he had to be taken. I hope you let Eugene and the rest of the folks know about us. We are still in no danger as long as we stay here. I am so sorry I cannot send you some money but it is impossible now. But just as soon as it can be sent will send. Remember me to all the ladies There was a call for linen for the wounded. Irene did two pounds out of my old linen. I thought of you all how busy you would be if you was here there was a ship load of red cross nurses and doctors come over some of them are here in Vienna. There were many Americans went home when your letter went. They were nearly a month on the way. I suppose it cost them a small fortune to go I don’t think of any thing else just now. Will write soon again. Trust you are well and all the ladies also. Berdette & Irene sends love Ever your loving sister Libbie Tappanâ€. An interesting first-hand account. It is in very good condition and the original envelope is enclosed. unknown books‎

‎SPIRITUALIST CIVIL WAR SPEECH‎

‎A Spiritualist Minister Decries The Morality Of The North The South And The Whole Civil War – “Massachusetts Abolished Slavery Because They Could Not Make It Profitable…Stated That The Northern People Were Greater Slaves Than The Southern Niggers…Moral Suasion Is The Only Way To Abrogate Slavery & There Is No Others…They Are No Spiritualists If They Do Not For Their Dessenent Saith Notâ€‎

‎SPIRITUALISM. A religious movement centered on communication with the dead. It was very popular in 19th-century Europe and America. MDS. 8pgs. N.d. Civil War era N.p. probably Vermont. A handwritten transcript of a speech given by a Spiritualist minister. In a long and cutting speech Rev. Gibson Smith a minister from South Shaftsbury Vermont criticized the Civil War the Union and many American politicians of the era. Though he seems to have supported the abolitionist cause – as did most Spiritualists – Smith decried the war itself believing that the north was as immoral and self-serving as the south. He speaks frequently of morality versus law considering the former to be more powerful than the latter. Smith also complains about the persecution of Spiritualists by numerous politicians. Smith mentions several times the possibility of Stephen Douglas becoming the next President. The transcript is signed “A. Thompson Rep.†at the bottom presumably by the man who recorded it. “Rev. Gibson Smith Spritualist. The speakers began by saying that though Religion & politics out not to go together but he thought differently that political were the purest principles next to religion there is extant. Stated he was no scheming politician & was not ‘as had been asserted’ hired by C K Smart & went on to prove it by stating that he had only 10 cts in his pocket & that he had lived on one meal per day so much was he devoted to his principles. Went on to speak of Burlingame & stated afterwards that the Constitution was adopted in 1781 and when it was adopted it found the Colonies all slave states & stated that Massachusetts abolished slavery because they could not make it profitable & would not have done so if they could & that the people of Mass had no sympathy for niggers & never will have. Stated that the northern people were greater slaves than the southern niggers because they were made subservient to domineering churches & sectarian…That the south were honest and believed slavery a divine institution & prove it from the Bible & you regard it a moral evil ‘They have as much right to their opinion as you & it is none of your business to interfere with it. Want you to call your ministers in I want to talk to them you have got mad at this thing of slavery & this quarrel is a monstrous thing between the north & south. You talk about a Higher Law what is your higher law it causes you to trample upon the constitution & laws of your country. You never knew a legal enactment to do away with a moral evil. Cited the Maine Law as an instance & said there was as much liquor drank now as there ever was before Cheers Moral suasion is the only way to abrogate slavery & there is no others. How did your churches regard the higher laws let us see when the Washingtonion movement came up they opposed it to the last end! When this ramrod law came up how did they to They went in for it to a man! The Democrats are for moral suasion in all things. A word to spiritualists you believe in progression & that progression is from wrong to right. Now slavery has steadily advanced under your doctrine of intervention. Your doctrine has caused you to repudiate your higher law. If you oppose slavery as having its equal share of the territories the south will dissolve the Union! & justly to! Douglass will be the next president & he will prevent this. The South drove slavery into Kansas & the north drove it out. Washburn endorsed Helpers Book & 11 other republican members of the House of Representatives. Slavery must have more territory or this great increase will overflow the south & you will have to cut their throats to make room for the others to live. Fessenden is an abolitionist. Speaking of the taxes in Maine he said there was $20000000 worth of church property in maine not taxed & said all property ought to be taxed. So you the people have to pay the taxes that should be levied upon this property. Some rich men buy $5000 dollars worth of pews in your churches & sent them at a money making rate & it is all clear of taxation. This is no donation they do it to speculate! The ministerial exemption law was smuggled through the legislature and there is no report other than the law itself upon record no report in the newspapers the law itself is a disgrace to the state for it helps only the rich & poor Methodist ministers get nothing by it. They abuse & persecute me & I have to help pay their taxes for them by the force of your statue law. Nothing to say about Peck the Rep. Leaders are dishonest but the voters are not & the speaker goes on to advise them to vote for smart and Douglass if they want to be honest & they certainly will be elected for all the boys are for them. Rust of the Progressive Age tried to put me down & came in and disturbed my meeting & threatened to call the police before he would be quiet. Simonton of Camden tried to stamp me down when I spoke in opposition to Grimes but I stood until they got tired of for I would have stood all might but I would have spoken & then he saved me the next day when I went into his shop & that is gods truth. The speakers said he stumped the state of Vermont for Fremont in ’56 and he should not have turned democrat if they had not drove him to it. Luke P Rand & G.W. Brown turned when they were driven to it by the Republicans. Remmings of Boston donated a printing press worth $5’00 to the spiritualists of Maine & G.W. Brown was to conduct the paper & Remmings was informed that Brown calculated to blow for the democracy & he came to get the press away but Brown would not give it up & Remmings put the law to it & stopped it while it was running off its edition before the papers were half printed. He persecuted Brown & put his wife & remaining child for one lay dead in the house when they seized the press in a common pest house pretending that they were going to have the small pox & when Brown was gone from home & they had no protestors they kept them there 4 weeks & Brown had to threaten to prosecut sic to get them out. The names of the men that did this as Frost Straw & Snow. Speaker goes on to tell the spiritualists to vote against them because they have done it & tells them they are no spiritualists if they do not for their dessenent saith not. A. Thompson Rep.†In fair condition with some toning on each page. This is quite a speech and it must have been quite something to hear it in person. It’s difficult to know what the man who copied it down thought of it. The thread binding that once held the sheets together has come apart so all leaves are now separate. unknown books‎

‎WORLD WAR II LETTER‎

‎An American World War II Soldier Writes About Military Training And The Ongoing War: “It Is Not The Compulsory Military Training That Causes War In Europe. All The Countries There Had Military Training. The Forces That Create War Are Not Preparedness But Economic And Political. Germany Went To War But Was Not Ready To Attack Russia Immediately…We Believe In Democracy Other Nations Believe In A State Controlled Government Others In A Benevolent Dictatorship And Still Others Believe In Their Pocketbookâ€‎

‎WORLD WAR II LETTER. TLS. 2pg. 8 ½†x 11â€. July 7 1945. No place likely the Philippines. A typed letter signed by Boris Clarke during the closing days of World War II. He wrote to his uncle Alfred Lane of Cambridge Massachusetts who was a Harvard professor. Clarke wrote “I have neglected my letter writing for the last few days because there have been a number of things to be done. One of these was a trip to Manila. I went there on the second and returned on the 4th. It takes from 7 to 8 hours a day to get there. The time I make on the highway which is cement covered most of the way depends on the traffic and the M.P.s. Today Col Patrick sent me up your last letter. I am quite interested in your stand about universal military training. I do not know whether because of my origin from a country with compulsory military training or from the anxiety we all lived thru in the beginning of this war when our inductees had to train in some camps with wooden guns and other field materiel however I have always believed that universal training is not a threat to peace. It is not the compulsory military training that causes war in Europe. All the countries there had military training. The forces that create war are not preparedness but economic and political. Germany went to war but was not ready to attack Russia immediately she needed some boosting of moral sic some victories to present to her people before she attacked a country that had a standing army even if not so well equipped at that time. Although it takes England and the United States a short period of time before they can throw in a powerful and trained army the weight of a trained and ready army is always a sobering factor to those that decide that this is the time to strike. I believe in military training as a discipline. The comradeship physical training and toughening discipline the training to take orders and to give orders on the whole an experience quite different from the normal civilian experience will strengthen the youth of our country. Many of the boys over here and in Europe could not live thru the shock that army life imposed on them. The change was too great for some. When they returned to civilian life the greatest percentage of them recovered. But in the army they were not able to render the service which I believe most of them sincerely wanted to give. Training of this sort when the emotional strain not so great because of the certain imminence of combat as is the case now will contribute to the strengthening of what we called some years ago character and now call emotional stability and adjustment. An argument like the above is not complete unless you believe enough in it to take part. I myself most likely will not be called for universal training but I will be wholeheartedly in favor if such an opportunity is afforded my son…The war is still going on even if there are no guns going off. Spheres of influence the juggling of phrases as ‘government chosen by the people’ the question of bringing relief to the countries that need it by whom and what pressure that would have in deciding the type of government that nation wants are the weapons. We believe in democracy other nations believe in a state controlled government others in a benevolent dictatorship and still others believe in their pocketbook. Although generally I have been in favor of Russia’s influence in Bulgaria I disprove of some of her methods. I agree with you that USA civilian affairs units would have been of great value in the immediate emergency. The U.S. army C.A. aims to get the people on their feet but it cost in the long run less. Here in the Philippines C.A. has rebuild many rice mills saw mills has brought in seeds for vegetable gardens and has provided the Commonwealth government with new trucks to help in the organizing of transportation. These services are costly but they are lasting. They have laid the foundation from which these services can grow. It is not just meeting the immediate emergency it is the starting point for rehabilitation. Thru Patrick you have already received the news that I am on my way home…McArthur has declared the Philippines secure. The Commonwealth Govt is taking over the civil affairs…At first contact with the people here we are too apt to judge them by our own standards and think that they are lazy. That is not the case. They have adopted their life to the environment if we were to go on the way we do in the States we would burn out very fast. The older in residence and wiser of the white people here have adopted the afternoon siesta…it tends to make my nights sleepless…â€. The letter has mailing folds and the original envelope and is in fine condition. unknown books‎

Humor supplement to the weekly Schwabian-American newspaper Schwäbisches Wochenblatt. Though we find no records for the New York-based newspaper or its supplement we do find a newspaper of the same name published by the Social Democratic Party of Germany. This periodical also appears to be anti-capitalist the cartoon on the first page of the first issue shows a worker slicing open the money-bag gut of Mammon. Most significantly this periodical began publication months after the United States entered World War I with much of the content on the plight of the German-born American citizens another cartoon shows an American citizen of German birth in a muzzle. ‎SPANISH CIVIL WAR CARMONA de la PUENTE Dario ed‎

‎HOY: Revista Mensual. Portavoz del Comité Regional en Cataluña de los Industrias de la Edificación Madera y Decoración. Vol I no. 1 all published‎

‎Barcelona: Comité Regional en Cataluña de los Industrias de la Edificación Madera y Decoración C.N.T - A.I.T. 1937. First Edition. Large folio 49cm. Staple-bound pictorial paper wrappers; 23pp; illus. Horizontal fold; partial perforation at bound edge; creasing to corners with marginal soil to wrappers and a few chips to contents; a sound Good or better example. The unlikeliest of publishing endeavors during the depredations of wartime: an avant-garde large-format lavishly illustrated journal of architecture and decorative arts issued no less under the auspices of an anarchist workers federation. The editors intended to usher in a new era of progressivism and modernism following the defeat of the fascist rebels in the July Barcelona uprising of 1936 ".aquel magnifico y revolucionario 19 de julio tan digno y decisivo; no solo como fin de etapa sino tambien como prologo de una etapa nueva repleta de posibilidades consequidas ya en parte ye en parte perfiladas no siempre malogradas." and the magazine fashioned itself upon the model of such avant-garde revolutionary journals as the Soviet Union's USSR in Construction and the American Labor Defender with bold photo-montage layouts and modernist typography. The timing was not propitious. By December 1937 the Republic was mired in an increasingly hopeless civil war and the glorious New Era that had seemed so certain in July of 1936 was now a rapidly fading hope. The magazine appears to have lasted for only a single issue before folding; today it is extremely rare with no examples in North America and only two physical locations noted in European institutions via COPAC and OCLC Biblioteca Nacional and Bibliotheque Nanterre. BNE attributes editorship to the avant-garde graphic artist Darío Carmona de la Puente but this information does not appear to derive from the publication itself which makes no editorial attribution.
