Cover has slight wear and soiling. v 1 46 p. 23 cm. Maps. Endnotes. From an on-line posting: "This study shows how the Syrian was able to improve his originally weak position in the peace talks by exploiting crisis conditions in Lebanon. Assad's major weapon against the Israelis has been the guerrilla group Hizbollah. The author claims that the fact that a small group of guerrillas could have such an enormous impact in this international drama reveals changed power relations in the strategic Middle East. Dr. Stephen C. Pelletiere served as the Strategic Studies Institute s Middle East expert. Prior to this appointment he was an intelligence officer in Washington monitoring the Iran-Iraq war. Dr. Pelletiere s research deals with America s Dual Containment policy. ‎United Kingdom. War Office‎

‎The Bailey Bridge--Normal Uses: Military Engineering Volume III Part III‎

‎London England United Kingdom: Her Majesty's Stationery Office 1954. Reprint. Reprinted with Amendments Nos. 1 to 5. Wraps. Good. Cover has some wear and soiling. Pencil erasure residue on contents page. iv 145 1 p. Includes: illustrations diagrams. Numerous fold-out diagrams. War Office Code No. 7481. This was derived from the Military Engineering Volume III Part II pamphlet No 12 from 1942. It represented the state of the art state of knowledge and the state of practice at the end of the Second World War through the beginning of the Korean War era. From Wikipedia: "The Bailey bridge is a type of portable pre-fabricated truss bridge. It was developed by the British during World War II for military use and saw extensive use by both British and the American military engineering units. A Bailey bridge had the advantages of requiring no special tools or heavy equipment to construct. The wood and steel bridge elements were small and light enough to be carried in trucks and lifted into place by hand without requiring the use of a crane. The bridges were strong enough to carry tanks. Bailey bridges continue to be extensively used in civil engineering construction projects and to provide temporary crossings for foot and vehicle traffic. Donald Bailey was a civil servant in the British War Office who tinkered with model bridges as a hobby. He presented one such model to his chiefs who saw some merit in the design. A team of Royal Engineer RE officers was assembled at the Military Engineering Experimental Establishment MEXE in Barrack Road Christchurch Dorset in 1941 and 1942; among them were Robin Foulkes Darrell Herbert John de Waele and Bill Buckle all R.E. subalterns at the time. In the course of development the bridge was tested in several formats e.g. as a suspension bridge and as a "stepped arch" bridge as well as the flat truss bridge which became the standard. The prototype of this was used to span Mother Siller's Channel which cuts through the nearby Stanpit Marshes an area of marshland at the confluence of the River Avon Hampshire and the River Stour Dorset. It remains there WikiMiniAtlas 50°43′ 31″ N 1°45′ 44″ W / 50.7252806°N 1.762155°W / 50.7252806; -1.762155 as a functioning bridge. Bridges in the other formats were built temporarily to cross the Avon and Stour in the meadows nearby. After successful development and testing the bridge was taken into service by the Corps of Royal Engineers and first used in North Africa in 1942. A number of bridges were available by 1944 for D-Day when production was accelerated. The US also licensed the design and started rapid construction for their own use. Bailey was later knighted for his invention which continues to be widely produced and used today. 1 The original design however violated a patent on the Callender-Hamilton bridge. The designer of that bridge A. M. Hamilton successfully applied to the Royal Commission on Awards to Inventors. The Bailey bridge however had several advantages over Hamilton's design. For example damaged parts could not be replaced quickly on the Callender-Hamilton bridge an essential requirement for military use. The Callender-Hamilton bridge was modified by the London County Council engineers' department in the design of three emergency bridges which were erected across the River Thames in 1940. Damaged parts of these could be quickly replaced. Experience gained in this work contributed to the development of the Bailey Bridge. Hamilton was awarded £4 000 in 1936 by the War Office for the use of his early bridges and the Royal Commission on Awards to Inventors awarded him £10 000 in 1954 for the use mainly in Asia of his later bridges. Lieutenant General Sir Giffard Le Quesne Martel was awarded £500 for infringement on the design of his box girder bridge the Martel bridge." Her Majesty's Stationery Office paperback‎

‎United States. War Department. Quartermaster General of the Army‎

‎U.S. Army Uniforms and Equipment 1889: Specifications for Clothing Camp and Garrison Equipage and Clothing and Equipage Materials‎

‎Lincoln NE: University of Nebraska Press 1986. First Bison Book printing stated. First published in 1889. Trade paperback. Very good. ix 1 375 5 p. Illustrations. Index. Foreword by Jerome A. Greene a noted western military historian. This rare book contains not only complete specifications but detailed line drawings of virtually every item of uniform and equipment issued. It is a valuable reference for articles used during the 1870s and 1880s the period of the Indian wars. 'This book marked a milestone in the development of standards and specifications for clothing and equipment.by the War Department'-Jerome A. Greene. For much of the nineteenth century the production of military clothing and equipment was geared to national emergencies. During the Mexican and Civil wars the hardpressed Quartermaster Department was forced to rely on civilian and later European suppliers. A contract system too often resulted in profiteering inferior goods and administrative confusion. By 1887 reforms in the system were accompanied by strict specifications for material which were published by the War Department in 1889 and distributed to fewer than sixty officers in the Quartermaster Department. Never before reprinted this rare book contains not only complete specifications but detailed line drawings of virtually every item of uniform and equipment issued from mosquito bars and tent stoves to overalls for mounted men and uniform coat buttons 'the burnishing to be done in the best manner known to the trade'. This valuable reference for articles used by the army during the period of the Indian wars will be of special interest to collectors historians archaeologists curators and antique dealers. Glossary of British Militry Terms. Abbreviations of the Regiments and Corps of the British Army From Wikipedia: " Her Majesty's Armed Forces commonly known as the British Armed Forces and occasionally the Armed Forces of the Crown are the armed forces of the United Kingdom. The Armed Forces consists of three professional uniformed services: the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Corps forming the Naval Service the British Army and the Royal Air Force. The Commander-in-Chief of Her Majesty's Armed Forces is the British monarch Queen Elizabeth II to whom members of the forces swear allegiance. Under British constitutional law the armed forces are subordinate to the Crown. However under the 1689 Bill of Rights no standing army may be maintained during time of peace without the consent of Parliament; Parliament gives this consent every five years by passing an Armed Forces Act. The armed forces are managed by the Defence Council of the Ministry of Defence headed by the Secretary of State for Defence. The British Armed Forces are charged with protecting the United Kingdom its overseas territories and Crown Dependencies as well as promoting Britain's wider security interests and supporting international peacekeeping efforts. They are active and regular participants in NATO and other coalition operations. Britain is also party to the Five Power Defence Arrangements. Recent operations have included wars in Afghanistan and Iraq the 2000 intervention in Sierra Leone peacekeeping responsibilities in the Balkans and Cyprus and participation in the UN-mandated no-fly zone over Libya. Overseas garrisons and facilities are maintained at Ascension Island Belize Brunei Canada Diego Garcia the Falkland Islands Germany Gibraltar Kenya Qatar and the Sovereign Base Areas Cyprus. The United Kingdom tested its first nuclear weapon under Operation Hurricane in 1952 becoming the third nation in the world to achieve the status of a nuclear power. As of 2012. Britain remains one of five recognised nuclear powers with a total of 225 nuclear warheads. Of those no more than 160 are deployed and active. Excerpts from an on-line encyclopedia posting: "military bridge temporary bridge that must usually be constructed in haste by military engineers from available materials frequently under fire. The earliest types historically were pontoon bridges i.e. floating bridges that rest on stationary boats. By the 17th century bridging equipment was part of the train of European and Turkish armies with pontoons fashioned not only of timber but also of leather copper and tin. Pneumatic pontoons with steel roadways made their appearance during World War II. Military trestles were built in considerable numbers in the wars of the 19th century. Military pontoon bridges are usually built either by successively extending outward from the shore or by constructing whole sections as rafts and floating them into position. Truss bridges for use where riverbanks are steep or navigation must be kept open are made up in panels readily bolted together. Military truss bridges were pioneered in World War II by the highly successful British-invented Bailey bridge which played an especially important role in the Allied campaign in Italy." ‎Washington DC: United States Government Printing Office 1937. Revised edition. Wraps. Good. No dust jacket. Cover has some wear and soiling. Small tear at top of front spine. v 1 142 p. This type of ephemeral publication rarely survives. This provides a baseline for cost-estimation on war production transportation costs just prior to the U.S. entry into WWII This cancels Circular No. 5 OQMG 1929 and supplements Nos. 1 and 2 thereto. Without the assistance of the U.S. government railroad construction between 1860 and 1900 would have been greatly curtailed. Building a railroad was an expensive venture. Private banks fearing the railroad companies would need a long time to pay off their debts were reluctant to loan money to the companies. To remedy the situation Congress provided assistance to the railroad companies in the form of land grants. The land grant railroads receiving millions of acres of public land sold the land to make money built their railroads and contributed to a more rapid settlement of the West. In the end four out of the five transcontinental railroads were built with help from the federal government. The figures shown herein have been prepared in the General Accounting Office and checked and approved by proper officials in the railroads concerns. Percentages of deductions shown herein apply between points on individual land-grans railroads only. United States Government Printing Office paperback‎
