‎105-MM Howitzer Materiel M2; Technical Manual TM 9-325‎

‎Washington DC: United States War Department 1942. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Wraps. Good. Format is approximately 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches. 134 2 pages. Appendix: List of References. Index. This manual supersedes TM 9-325 May 1 1941 including C1 October 13 1941. Cover has some wear and soiling. Name rank and organization of previous owner on front cover. Page 1 bound with short right edge. This manual was published for the information and guidance of the using arms and services. In addition to a description of the 105--mm howitzer materiel M2 this manual contains technical information required for the identification use and care of the materiel. Disassembly assembly and such repairs as may be handled by using arms personnel will be undertaken only under the supervision of an officer or the chief mechanic. During the Second World War U.S. artillery regiments consisted of an HQ detachment one 155 mm artillery battalion and three 105 mm artillery battalions. Both the 155 mm and 105 mm battalions had twelve guns each divided into three batteries of four guns. The 105 mm M101A1 howitzer previously designated M2A1 was an artillery piece developed and used by the United States. It was the standard U.S. light field howitzer in World War II and saw action in both the European and Pacific theaters. Entering production in 1941 it quickly gained a reputation for accuracy and a powerful punch. The M101A1 fired 105 mm 4.1 in high explosive HE semi-fixed ammunition and had a range of 12330 yards making it suitable for supporting infantry. All of these qualities of the weapon along with its widespread production led to its adoption by many countries after the war. Its ammunition type also became the standard for many foreign countries' later models. United States, War Department paperback‎

Maps. Abbreviations. Cover has some wear and soiling. Some corners creased. Some page wear and soiling. Format is 8 inches by 10.25 inches. This is one of the American Forces in Action Series. The Historical Division's Information and Historical Units attached to field armies conducted extensive interviews with personnel of units engaged in typical unusual or critical actions. The interviews were accompanied by terrain study of the battlefield sometimes conducted with members of the units being interviewed. Every effort was made by careful checking and rechecking to obtain a full and accurate account. The four narratives given here will serve as samples of the source materials thus obtained containing in very large measure data which are not to be found in unit records. The latter were used in every case however to check and supplement interviews. The actions chosen for this publication illustrate widely varying tactical problems and methods. Only one Pointe du Hoc represents a highly specialized form of action; the others are typical of scores of battles in their respective theaters of operations. All are average in the sense that they are not 'success' stories but cross sections of a war which involved reverses as well as victories. This fact will be obscured in histories of campaigns and major battles for in these U.S. forces were almost uniformly successful. But the larger successes were won by actions like those recorded here; in every phase of the war battalions and companies went through a daily fare of experience that was never uniform that nearly always included some measure of trial and even defeat as part of the fuller pattern which over a longer period added up to victory. ‎Air Service Medical Manual‎

‎Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1918. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Good. Format is approximately 7.25 inches by 10.5 inches. 38 pages plus plates. Color Frontis. Illustrations. figures tables index Cover has wear and soiling. Minor tear and pencil erasure to fep. Rear board has some weakness and has been restrengthened with glue. The table of Contents states Part I. Chapter I.--Aviation and its medical problems; II--The selection of the flier; III--The classification of the flier; and IV--The maintenance of the efficiency of the flier. In each of the countries at war there was a fully established Air Medical Service. In the U.S. Army this work was effectively handled by a division of the Surgeon General's Office assigned as a part of the Division of Military Aeronautics. Aviation was new and the Air Medical Service was even newer; so that for educational purposes the director of Military Aeronautics deemed it advisable to issue this manual. The object was to set forth Aviation's debt to Medicine and to make clear the part played by the Air Medical Service in the 'winning of the war in the air." Part I issued as a separate volume from Part II was a short statement of the essential facts which were of immediate general interest. Part II went into greater detail and was intended for those who belonged to the Air Medical Service itself or for those who desired to make a more thorough study of this new work. ‎Noonan Guerra Mary Ann‎

‎An Alamo Album‎

‎1980. New Revised Edition stated. Second Printing stated. Wraps. Very good. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. Map. Diagram. Illustrations. Important Dates for the Alamo. Heroes of the Alamo. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Mary Ann Noonan-Guerra author of eleven fine books on San Antonio and Texas history has worked over 30 years to bring a fresh perspective to the study of the community's past. She perceived that an immense lore lay hidden in the long lost lives of the mission and other communities along Rio San Antonio. "Mary Ann Noonan-Guerra has written extensively on San Antonio history using mostly a booklet format to make our collective past more attractive and affordable to visitors and other readers reluctant to buy or take on heavier tomes." He continued "She has documented Texas Revolution battles buildings and family histories and she has reissued with introductions and annotations important works such as "Viva Tejas!" by Ruben R. Lozano one of her most fascinating books."--Dr. Gilberto Hinojosa. The Battle of the Alamo February 23 - March 6 1836 was a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege Mexican troops under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna launched an assault on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar killing the Texian defenders. Santa Anna's cruelty during the battle inspired many Texians-both Texas settlers and adventurers from the United States-to join the Texian Army. Buoyed by a desire for revenge the Texians defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21 1836 ending the revolution. The Alamo has been the subject of numerous non-fiction works beginning in 1843. Most Americans however are more familiar with the myths and legends spread by many of the movie and television adaptations5 including the 1950s Disney mini-series Davy Crockett and John Wayne's 1960 film The Alamo. paperback‎

This manual supersedes TM 4-225 Orientation 15 July 1941. 1. Definition Orientation is defined as any process by which direction is ascertained. When the word orientation is used in connection with artillery however it includes the location of points in both a horizontal and vertical direction and the establishment of lines of known length and azimuth. 2. Methods The methods of solution of an orientation problem are dependent upon the time available for the solution and the equipment at hand. The methods presented in this manual include both quick approximate methods and more lengthy precise methods. 3. Precision Precision is the ideal which is sought for in the solution of any orientation problem. However the time permitted for the solution may not be sufficient to allow the completion of the problem by a precise method. A hasty approximation of direction is far preferable to an uncompleted survey made with a high degree of precision. The greatest precision consistent with the time available must be the goal of all reconnaissance officers. U. S. Government Printing Office paperback‎

‎Washington DC: United States Army Center of Military History 1990. 50th Anniversary Commemorative Edition. Trade paperback. Very good. x 80 pages plus fold-out maps. Maps. Sketches. Photographs. Annexes. CMH 100-6. When originally published this was one of a series of fourteen studies of World War II operations originally published by the War Department's Historical Division. Those volumes prepared by professional historians shortly after the events described provide a concise summary of some of the major campaigns and battles fought by American soldiers. The skillful combination of combat interviews with primary sources many of which are now lost gives these narratives a special importance to military historians. The II Corps was a corps-sized formation of the United States Army. It was the first American formation of any size to see combat in North Africa or Europe during World War II. In November 1942 II Corps landed in Oran as part of the Allied invasion of French North Africa. After initially making good headway against German forces during the Tunisia Campaign II Corps was decisively defeated in February 1943 during the Battle of Kasserine Pass by troops under Rommel. In March 1943 after a change of command to Major General George Patton II Corps recovered its cohesion and fought well for the rest of the Tunisia Campaign winning the Battle of El Guettar. II Corps held the southern flank of the British First Army during the destruction of the remaining Axis forces in North Africa. The war in North Africa ended in May 1943 with almost 250000 Axis soldiers surrendering to become prisoners of war. II Corps was inactivated in Austria on 10 October 1945 following Germany's surrender. United States Army, Center of Military History paperback‎

The Hague Convention of 1899 are a series of international treaties and declarations negotiated at two international peace conferences at The Hague in the Netherlands. Along with the Geneva Conventions the Hague Conventions were among the first formal statements of the laws of war and war crimes in the body of secular international law. The Convention with respect to the Laws and Customs of War on Land contains the laws to be used in all wars on land between signatories. It specifies the treatment of prisoners of war includes the provisions of the Geneva Convention of 1864 for the treatment of the wounded and other provisions. The section was ratified by all major powers mentioned above. The Hague Convention of 1907 reaffirmed these rules with minor revisions and was also ratified by the major powers. Reflects the rules of war baseline that the United States Army took into the First World War. The First World War was one of the earliest major conflicts fought under or around the provisions of the Hague Conventions. This work on the Rules of Land Warfare had been prepared for the use of officers of the land forces of the United States. It had been found essential to make many additions to the texts of the Hague and Geneva conventions since these do not deal exhaustively with their subject matter. The text of the manual which is for the guidance of officers of our Army is the official translation of the French as ratified by the United States Senate. Especial use was made of The Rules of Land Warfare prepared by officers of the English Army and Prof. Nagao Ariga's book "La Guerre Russo-Japonaise" which dealt so carefully and thoroughly with the laws and uses of war during one of the greatest wars in the period just prior to the First World War. ‎Drill Regulations for 155 MM. Howitzer Model 1915 S. Translated and Prepared at the Headquarters AEF France‎

‎Washington DC: Army War College 1917. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Stiff wraps. Good. Pocket-sized. 2 97 3 pages. Wraps. Table. Appendix. War Department Document No. 719. Before entering World War I the United States was poorly equipped with heavy artillery. To address this problem a number of foreign heavy artillery guns were adopted including the Canon de 155 mm GPF. After the end of the war the Westervelt Board was convened to assess the artillery experience of the combatant powers and map out future directions for the US Army artillery. The conclusion of the board vis-a-vis heavy field artillery was that the French 155mm GPF should be adopted as the standard heavy field piece but further development work should occur to achieve a heavy field gun with a max. range of 25000 yards a vertical arc of fire from 0° to 65° a projectile not exceeding 100 lbs and the capability to be mounted on a caterpillar mount or a rubber tired towed mounting. The Canon de 155 C modèle 1915 Saint-Chamond was a French howitzer used during World War I. It was based on a private prototype of a 150 millimetres 5.9 in howitzer presented to the Mexican government in 1911. The French government ordered 400 Saint-Chamond howitzers in 1915 these being delivered starting in late 1916. Small numbers of Saint-Chamond howitzers were given to the Serbian and Romanian armies towards the end of World War I. The Saint-Chamond howitzer served in the French Army after World War I and were mobilized at the outbreak of World War II. Finland bought 24 Saint-Chamond howitzers during the Winter War and these served until the 1960s. Although the Saint-Chamond howitzer was 400 kg lighter than the equivalent Schneider howitzer its maximum range was 2400 metres 2600 yd shorter. It was used in second line and training units until the end of World War 1. Army War College paperback‎

This represents the state of knowledge and the state of practice after the United States Army had been engaged in overseas combat operations during the First World War. Success in battle is the ultimate object of all military training; success may be looked for only when the training is intelligent and thorough. Commanding officers are accountable for the proper training of their respective organizations within the limits prescribed by regulations and orders. The excellence of an organization is judged by its field efficiency. The field efficiency of an organization depends primarily upon its effectiveness as a whole. Thoroughness and uniformity in the training of the units of an organization are indispensable to the efficiency of the whole; it is by such means alone that the requisite teamwork may be developed. The Drill Regulations are furnished as a guide. They provide the principles for training and for increasing the probability of success in battle. Charles White Berry April 11 1871 - April 30 1941 was an American physician soldier and New York City Comptroller. Berry graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1896. He then began practicing medicine in Brooklyn devoting much of his time to childhood diseases. He was heavily involved in public health working for the New York City Department of Health and the New York State Department of Health as a diagnostician and epidemiologist. In 1917 he received a degree in doctor of public health from New York University. In 1911 when trouble was brewing with Mexico he sought and obtained a commission as first lieutenant in the 14th Infantry. A year later he was commissioned a captain. While serving he was commended by Major General Leonard Wood for having the most efficient company in the National Guard. From 1913 to 1914 he was an Aide to governor Martin H. Glynn. Shortly afterwards he was mustered in to serve with the 14th Infantry during the Mexican Border War. He received an honorable discharge in 1916. When America was preparing to enter World War I Berry again enlisted as a private in the 14th Infantry. He was commissioned a major of infantry transferred to the 106th Infantry 27th Division and set sail for France in May 1918. He commanded the 2nd Battalion of the 106th stationed in the Ypres sector in Belgium. He was then promoted to lieutenant-colonel and transferred to the 105th Infantry. He led the regiment at Dickebusch Lake and the Battle of Vierstraat Ridge. He was second in command of the regiment in the Battle of the Hindenburg Line and the subsequent advance to Canal De La Sambre. After the Armistice was signed he returned to the United States in November 1918. For his military service he was awarded the Croix de guerre with Palms the Conspicuous Service Cross and was cited for gallantry in action. In January 1919 New York governor Al Smith commissioned Berry Brigadier General and appointed him Adjutant General of New York. He served until 1920. In 1923 Smith again appointed Berry Adjutant General of New York. In May 1923 Smith appointed him Major-General Commander of the New York National Guard to replace General John F. O'Ryan. In 1925 Berry was elected New York City Comptroller. He served from 1926 to 1933. United States Infantry Association paperback‎

‎United States War Department, Office of the Surgeon General‎

‎Drill Regulations and Service Manual for Sanitary Troops United States Army 1914; Corrected to April 15 1917 Changes Nos. 1 to 4‎

‎Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1917. presumed First Edition First printing thus. Hardcover. Fair. 235 1 pages. Illustrations. Diagrams. Music. Appendix. War Department Document No. 438 Office of the Surgeon General. Covers and spine have edge damage Name in ink on bottom edge and ink notation related to Camp Devens on fep. The following system of Drill Regulations and Service manual for Sanitary Troops United States Army was approved and published for the information and government of the Regular Army and the Organized Militia of the United States. All sanitary exercises and maneuvers not embraced in this system were prohibited. The story of the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps is evolutionary. Precursors such as Revolutionary War apothecaries and officers of the Civil War Ambulance Corps evolved into the World War I Sanitary Corps which was established on June 30 1917 as a temporary part of the Medical Department based on authority provided by an 18 May 1917 Act of Congress. This corps which rapidly expanded to nearly 3000 officers during the War enabled the relief of physicians from a variety of administrative technical and scientific duties. The Sanitary Corps was demobilized following the war. Camp Devens was established on September 5 1917 as a temporary cantonment for training soldiers during World War I. It was a reception center for war selectees and became a demobilization center after the war. Upon assuming office in January 1914 Surgeon General William C. Gorgas initiated planning for what he believed would be the eventual U.S. participation in the war. His experiences in Cuba and Panama led him to support the establishment of a corps to provide the administrative and scientific specialists necessary for the military medical team. By spring 1916 Gorgas regularly testified before Congress interspersing his testimony with excerpts from the proceedings of the French Chamber of Deputies on military medical lessons the French had learned. He noted the difficulty created by an insufficient number of military physicians and the burdening of that group with administrative responsibilities "which hamper and delay them in the performance of their regular tasks." Gorgas described steps the French had taken to remove those responsibilities from military physicians to the extent that in the first year of the war the French medical department had nearly twenty-five hundred administrative officers and twenty-five hundred apothecaries. Establishment of such a corps in the U.S. Army had to wait until entry of the United States into the war. Then General Gorgas' ability to put together an expanded medical support team for the Army was greatly advanced by War Department General Orders No. 80 30 June 1917 which created an important precursor of the Medical Service Corps. Called the Sanitary Corps "for want of a better name" the organization enrolled newly commissioned officers with "special skills in sanitation sanitary engineering in bacteriology or other sciences related to sanitation and preventive medicine or who possess other knowledge of special advantage to the Medical Department." The officer strength was set at a maximum of 1 per 1000 total Army active duty strength and the grades were initially capped at major. The order also provided for 3905 enlisted personnel in grades from private to hospital sergeant. Just as the USAAS provided the Medical Department with nonphysician commissioned specialists for the benefit of the French and Italian armies the Sanitary Corps did the same for the U.S. Army. This corps gave the department the capability to capitalize on new technology in a rich diversity of units with missions ranging from surgical instrument repair to cinematography. Maj. Gen. Merritte W. Ireland Gorgas' successor as surgeon general wrote that the corps "assisted notably" in the Medical Department's wartime performance. In fact the principal Medical Department wartime accomplishments cited in an account authorized by Secretary of War Newton D. Baker were those made possible by Sanitary Corps officers. ‎Infantry Drill Regulations United States Army 1911; Corrected to December 31 1917 Changes Nos. 1 to 21 and App. D‎

‎New York: Military Publishing Co 1918. Reprint from U. S. Government Printing Office edition. Hardcover. Fair. 259 1 pages. Illustrations. Music. Appendix. Cover worn and soiled. Rear board weak and restrengthened with glue. Pencil erasure residue on fep. War Department Document No. 394. The following system of Drill Regulations for Infantry is approved and published for the information and government of the Regular Army and the Organized Militia of the United States. With a view to ensure uniformity throughout the Army all infantry drill formations not embraced in this system are prohibited. This represents the state of knowledge and the state of practice at the time the United States Army was engaged in overseas combat operations during the First World War. The principles of combat are considered in Part II of these regulations. They are treated in the various schools included in Part I only to the extent necessary to indicate the functions of the various commanders and the division of responsibility between them. The amplification necessary to a proper understanding of their application is to be sought in Part II. Drill combat marches and camps ceremonies and inspections as well as manuals are all addressed.
