‎London: His Magesty's Stationery Office 1934. Presumed first edition/first printing. Hardcover. Good. Stiff card covers. Cover has some wear and soiling. Writing on Foredge. Stamp on t-p. Pencil erasure residue on fep. 284 p. Volume III Part I ONLY. 57 Plates. Some fold-outs. Tables. Index. Not to be Published--Crown Copyright Reserved. Excerpts from an on-line encyclopedia posting: "military bridge temporary bridge that must usually be constructed in haste by military engineers from available materials frequently under fire. The earliest types historically were pontoon bridges i.e. floating bridges that rest on stationary boats. By the 17th century bridging equipment was part of the train of European and Turkish armies with pontoons fashioned not only of timber but also of leather copper and tin. Pneumatic pontoons with steel roadways made their appearance during World War II. Military trestles were built in considerable numbers in the wars of the 19th century. Military pontoon bridges are usually built either by successively extending outward from the shore or by constructing whole sections as rafts and floating them into position. Truss bridges for use where riverbanks are steep or navigation must be kept open are made up in panels readily bolted together. Military truss bridges were pioneered in World War II by the highly successful British-invented Bailey bridge which played an especially important role in the Allied campaign in Italy." ‎Instructions for British Servicemen in France 1944‎

‎Bodleian Library University of Oxford 2007. Reprint. Hardcover. Very good. No dust jacket. 56 p. Illustrations. Occasional footnotes. Security Note. Words and Phrases. Weights and Measures. Road Signs. This edition reproduces the spelling of the original except in the case of ize/ise spellings which have been regularized. The section entitled "Words and Phrases" is printed in abridged form. This book has nothing to do with military operations. It deals only with civilian live in France and with the way servicemen should behave to the French civilian population. In 1944 the British War Office distributed a handbook to British soldiers informing them what to expect and how to behave in a newly-liberated France. Containing candid descriptions of this war-ravaged society widespread malnourishment rampant tuberculosis as well as useful phrases and a pronunciation guide Bonjewer commont-allay-voo it was an indispensable guide to everyday life. But this small and unassuming publication had a deeper purpose: to bring together two allies who did not enjoy ideal relations in 1944. The book attempts to reconcile differences by stressing a shared history and the common aim-defeating Hitler. It also tried to dispel misapprehensions: 'There is a fairly widespread belief among people in Britain that the French are a particularly gay frivolous people with no morals and few convictions. ' Often unintentionally hilarious in its expression of these false impressions the book is also a guide for avoiding social embarrassment: 'If you should happen to imagine that the first pretty French girl who smiles at you intends to dance the can-can or take you to bed you will risk stirring up a lot of trouble for yourself-and for our relations with the French. ' Many of its observations still ring true today. For example 'The French are more polite than most of us. Remember to call them "Monsieur Madame Mademoiselle " not just "Oy! "' Others remind us of how we recently we have adopted French customs: 'Don't drink yourself silly. If you get the chance to drink wine learn to "'take it". ' Anyone with an interest in Britain France or World War II will find this an irresistible insight into British attitudes towards the French and an interesting timeless commentary on Anglo-French relations. ‎The International Legal Ramifications of United States Counter-Proliferation Strategy: Problems and Prospects‎

‎Newport RI: Naval War College 1997. Trade paperback. Very good. No dust jacket as issued. ix 77 2 p.; 23 cm. Newport Papers Index. Notes. This is the eleventh in The Newport Papers series. Foreword by J. R. Stark Rear Admiral U.S. Navy President Naval War College. This study posits a three-part thesis. First that a unilateral U.S. applicaiton of an aggressive counter-proliferation strategy is inconsistent with current norms of international law second that U.S. policy makers should not abandon the counter-proliferation strategy because an occasion may arise when the United States may be unable to tolerate the imminent development of a nuclear weapon by an adversary and third that U.S. policy makers should not attempt to mold internation law through diplomacy os that counter-proleration becomes normatively acceptable throughout the international community. This last point recognized that it could be counterproductive to U.S. interests becasue it would permit nations other than the United States to legitimately launch counter-proliferation attacks perhaps even against U.S. allies. The author argues it was better to risk international condemnation than to legitimize counter-proliferation internationally as that might provide other states with political cover needed to launch military attacks that may be against U.S. interests. ‎United States. War Department‎

‎Ordnance Maintenance: U.S. Rifles Cal. 30: M1 M1C Sniper's and M1D Sniper's: War Department Technical Manual: TM 9-1275‎

‎Washington DC: U. S. Governemnt Printing Office 1947. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Wraps. Good. No dust jacket as issued. Cover has some wear and soiling. Stamp on front cover blacked over. 104 p. Includes: illustrations diagrams index. References. This manual supersedes TM 9-1275 6 November 1942 including C 1 15 May 1943; TB 23-5-6 5 June 1944; TB ORD 207 28 September 1944; OFSTB 9-1275-5 28 June 1943; and so much of TB ORD 272 26 March 1945 as pertains to materiel covered in this manual. This manual represents the state of knowledge and the standards of practice after consideration of the experience gained during the Second World War. Information on Sniper rifles is extremely scarce. Contents include: Introduction; INspection Prior to Disassembly; Tools Gages and Fixtures; General Maintenance; Barrel and Receiver Group; Trigger Housing Group; Stock and Hand Guards; Equipment; Function Firing and Final Inspection; Malfunctions and Corrections; Appendix References; and Index. This manual is published for the information and guidance of ordnance maintenance personnel. It contains detailed instructions for inspection disassembly maintenance and repair of the U.S. rifle cal. .30 M1; U.S. rifle cal. .30 M1C sniper's; and the U.S. rifle cal. .30 M1D sniper's. This manual does not contain general assembly or disassembly or information which is intended primarily for the using arms since such information is available to ordnance maintenance personnel in FM 23-5. Where "repair tolerances" as opposed to tolerances for new manufacture have been set up such repair tolerances will continue in use. If additional tolerances or variations are desired submit a specific request to the Chief of Ordnance. Only rifles having the new spline-type gas cylinder are to be rebuilt. The receivers on rifles having the old type gas cylinders are of early manufacture and cause "eleven o'clock" feed stoppages. They are identified by the top of the front feed rib being cut away instead of coming up to a square corner. Since the M1 M1C and M1D rifles are basically the same mechanically as well as in operation and functioning the disassembly assembly inspection maintenance and repair are covered generally. Characteristics: The U.S. rifles cal. .30 M1 M1C and M1D are gas-operated clip-loaded air cooled semiautomatic shoulder weapons. These rifles may be equipped with gun sling M1907 leather or gun sling M1 webbing. When desired grenade launcher M7 or M7A1 or bayonet M1 may be used with the rifles. Difference Between Models: The U.S. rifles cal. .30 M1 M1C and M1D are basically the same. However rifles of early and present manufacturer of the same model may differ somewhat due to changes in design of some of the component parts. The U.S. rifle M1C sniper's is the standard U.S. rifle M1 with telescope M81 or M82 mounted on the receiver and a cheek pad laced to the stock. The flash hider M2 is furnished as an accessory with the M1C and M1D models. The U.S. rifle M1D differs from the U.S. rifle M1C sniper's only in the design of the telescope mount and bracket. On the M1C model the telescope is held in a removable mount having a dovetailed slide mating with that of a bracket permanently attached to the receiver and locked in place by means of two locking screws. On the M1D model the telescope is held in a removable mount which in turn is attached to a fixed base on the barrel of the rifle by means of one screw and dowel pin. U. S. ‎United States. War Department. Chief of the Air Corps‎

‎Basic Photography Technical Manual No. 1-219; TM 1-219‎

‎Washington DC: United States War Department 1941. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Wraps. Good. 342 2 pages. Illustrations. Forumulary. List of Chemicals. Glossary. Index. Cover has some wear and soiling. Creases on the back page. This manual superseders TM 2170-5 March 1 1939. Prepared under the direction of the Chief of the Air Corps. This manual serves as a reference to basic photographic principles and to the technique of military photography. It includes elementary photography chemistry sensitized materials optics filters photographic sensitometry ground camera photography negative making printing copying lantern slides color photography and laboratory operations. Operation and methods incident to the making of aerial photographs and aerial photographic products and their application to various purposes are described in TM 1-220. This is the standard of practice in place when the United States entered into World War II. The Air Corps was charged with the responsibility for performing all photographic and cinematographic work from aircraft. At stations where Air Corps troops predominated the Air Corps was responsible for performing the essential ground camera photography that was normally done for the War Department by the Signal Corps. A specially trained technician known as a photo officer was a member of the special staff of the commander of each unit having photographic responsibilities. The photo officer acts as an adviser to the commander on all technical and tactical applications of photography. War photography involves photographing armed conflict and its effects on people and places. Photographers who participate in this genre may find themselves placed in harm's way and are sometimes killed trying to get their pictures out of the war arena. The first official attempts at war photography were made by the British government at the start of the Crimean War. In March 1854 Gilbert Elliott was commissioned to photograph views of the Russian fortifications along the coast of the Baltic Sea. Roger Fenton was the first official war photographer and the first to attempt a systematic coverage of war for the benefit of the public. Like all soldiers Army photographers get trained on basic combat skills and learn how to operate weapons expertly engage in hand-to-hand combat and administer basic first-aid. Being an Army photographer requires dedication and resilience. United States, War Department paperback‎
