Radio Fundamentals; War Department Technical Manual TM 11-455
Washington DC: United States Government Printing Office 1944. Revised Edition. This supersedes TM 11-455 17 July 1941. Wraps. Good. iii 1 336 4 pages. Wraps. Review Questions. Illustrations. Tables. Appendices. Glossary of Radio Terms. RMA Radio Color Codes. Bibliography. Index. Corners of some pages bent covers soiled & worn small tears at spine. This represents the state of knowledge state of practice and standard of training during the final months of the Second World War. It incorporated lessons learned and new technical developments since the issuance of the previous edition in mid-1941. Military manuals are several series of official publications intended to be instructive and informative. They were produced by all the branches of service but are generally called Army manuals. Using a phrase which appeared in many they were "published for the information and guidance of all concerned." During the 1940s military manuals were approved by the Chief of Staff and authenticated by the Adjutant General. Field Manual FM 21-6 List and Index of War Department Publications is a detailed list of the manuals that were available. The War Department which became the Department of the Army in 1947 issued three major classes of publications -- administrative doctrinal training and organizational and technical and equipment publications. Administrative publications include publications such as Army Regulations Special Regulations Bulletins Circulars General and Special Orders and Pamphlets; doctrinal training and organizational publications contain Field Manuals Army Training and Evaluation Programs Training Circulars Tables of Organization and Equipment and Tables of Allowances; and technical and equipment publications include publications such as Technical Manuals Technical Bulletins Supply Manuals etc. The Library of Congress does not have a complete set of these publications but its holdings are extensive and significant. United States Army Field Manuals are published by the United States Army's Army Publishing Directorate. As of 27 July 2007 some 542 field manuals were in use. They contain detailed information and how-tos for procedures important to soldiers serving in the field. Starting in 2010 the US Army began review and revision of all of its doctrinal publications under the initiative "Doctrine 2015". Since then the most important doctrine have been published in Army Doctrine Publications ADP and Army Doctrine Reference Publications ADRP replacing the former key Field Manuals. Army Techniques Publications ATP Army Training Circulars TC and Army Technical Manuals TM round out the suite new of doctrinal publications. Not all FMs are being rescinded. Select Field Manuals will continue to be published periodically reviewed and revised. Army manuals include publications on historic U. S. military vehicles including military motorcycles jeeps military trucks scout cars tanks and amphibians; aircraft including fixed wing and rotary craft; radio equipment; cooking; and language dictionaries and phrase books. Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1917. Revised Edition. Hardcover. Fair. 2 268 4 pages. Definitions. Illustrations. Fold-outs. Tables. Index. Pages have darkened somewhat boards soiled top and bottom edges of spine worn. Small arms include revolvers and pistols rifles and carbines assault rifles submachine guns and light machine guns. Together with light weapons heavy machine guns; hand-held grenade launchers; portable anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns; recoilless rifles; and mortars of calibers of less than 100 mm they comprise the Small Arms and Light Weapons category. "Since weapons in this class are capable of being carried if a small arm by one person or if a light arm by two or more people a pack animal or a light vehicle they allow for mobile operations where heavy mechanized and air forces are not available or are restricted in their capabilities owing to difficult mountain jungle or urban terrain." In the U.S. military small arms are "man portable individual and crew-served weapon systems used mainly against personnel and lightly armored or unarmored equipment". This is the 1913 Small Arms Firing Manual corrected to April 15 1917 incorporating changes 1 to 18.
