Declared fit for dutyhe then made the fatal mistake of not returning immediately to the front-line. The authorities arrested and tried him.The conduct of his trial is examined here in close detail and clearly flouts every convention of natural justice.<br />His execution by firing squad caused horror to his family and those who knew him and readers will feel equally outraged.Aby's case featured as major part of the Channel 4 drama documentary 'Boy Soldiers of the First World War.' This superbly researched andfor manyhighly emotive account of a specific case of grave injustice will fuel the controversy over such executions still further.'Die Hard Aby!' is sure to appeal to all who feel any sentiment for their fellow humans. Major Len Manderstam was one of the most remarkable secret agents of the Second World War. Born in Riga and a fluent Russian speakerhe was to be recruited to the Special Operations Executive soon after war broke out and became head of its Russian section.During the Revolution Manderstam founded a school militia which freed political prisoners and as a teenager became a colonel in Trotsky's Red Army on the Eastern Front. Horrified by Bolshevik atrocitieshe rebelled and was thrown into Lubianka prisonnarrowly escaping the firing squad. He left Russia for Africa in the 1920's and joined SOE in 1939.He headed the newly-formed Angola section and was involved in clandestine missions to blow up Nazi supply stores and sabotage U-boat fuel.He also arranged single-handed the capture of a Vichy French ship and its valuable cargo for which he was made an MBE.After serving in North AfricaItalySpainPortugalFrance and Germanyhe was appointed head of SOE Russian section. His tasks included checking out reports that large numbers of Russian exiles were serving in the German Army and liaising closely with his NKVD counterparts in the Soviet secret service. He later led protests against the forcible repatriation of Soviet prisonersgiving grave warnings to the Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden and to the Prime Ministerbut to no avail. He described this action as 'one of the most horrible and despicable in British historycondemning more than two million people to execution or the living death of Soviet labour camps'. These memoirs not only point towards a man of exceptional talent and strength of character but also uncover the little-known networks of the Special Operations Executive in neutral countries. In 2018 the RAF is one hundred years old.In his new book then 2017destined to be a classicPatrick Bishop examines the high point of its existence - the Second World Warwhen the Air Force saved the nation from defeat then led the advance to victory.<br />Air warfare was a terrible novelty of the modern age requiring a new military outlook. From the beginningthe RAF's identity set it apart from the traditional services. It was innovativeflexible and comparatively meritocratic advancing the quasi-revolutionary idea that competence was more important than background. <br />The Air Force went into the war with inadequate machines training and tacticsand the early phase was littered with setbacks and debacles.Thenin the summer of 1940in full view of the populationFighter Command won one of the decisive battles of the struggle.Thereafter the RAF was gilded with an aura of success that never tarnishedgoing on to make a vital contribution to Allied victory in all theatres.<br />Drawing from diarieslettersmemoirs and interviews'Air Force Blue' captures the nature of combat in the skies over the corrugated wastes of the Atlanticthe sands of the Western Desert and the jungles of Burma. It also brings to life the intensely lived dramasromances friendships and fun that were as important a part of the experience as the fighting. 'Air Force Blue' portrays the spirit of the RAF - its heart and soul - during its finest hours. It is essential reading for the millions in Britain and the Commonwealth whose loved ones servedand for anyone who wants to understand the Second World War. By June 1944hundreds of thousands of British and American soldiers and airmen were prisoners of war in camps across Nazi Germany. The war was reaching its endgame. On the Eastern Front the Red Army was advancingthe front line moving through Poland and towards the border with Germany. And in the westBritish and American troops were storming the beaches of northern France.News of the D-Day landingsheard on secret camp radiosfilled the prisoners with hopebut their joy turned into foreboding as their captors reacted to the threat. Many POWs feared they would be killed by the retreating German armies rather than allowed to fall into the hands of the Russians.Insteadin the depths of winter their guards forced them to march out of the camps and further into Germanyaway from their would-be liberators. The marches were long and desperately arduous. Some POWs walked for more than 500 miles and were on the road for many months.Hundreds died of exhaustion disease and starvation. Those who survived were awed by their experience. How they escaped with their lives and eventually reached home is a gripping story of endurance and courage. John Nichol himself a prisoner of war in the Gulf conflict in 1991 and Tony Rennell have interviewed many veterans travelling with some of them back to the site of the camps and retracing parts of the marches. In 'The Last Escape' they relate the astonishing history of these unrecognized heroesnow in their seventies and eighties and reliving their extraordinary experiences publicly for the first time. Across war-ravaged Europe they hunted down the Nazi war criminalsplus those who had run the notorious concentrations campsstumbling upon some of the darkest secrets of the new war - the Cold War. Known as 'The Secret Hunters'this force was peopled by a cast of characters more extraordinary than any fiction: Captain Henry Drucewho waged war from his jeep in a silk top hat and corduroys; Captain John Hislopa champion jockey who was evicted from his former regiment for showing a 'regrettable lack of military aptitude'; and Russian Prince Yurka Galitzinethe fabulously well-connected grandmaster of black operations. Still studied by the SAS today' the Nazi Hunters are a founding part of the Regiment's myth constituting one of the great untold stories of the Second World War.See also my book ID rja30338 for another WW2 title/book by this author. These events are here retold by the men themselves. 'GAS! THE BATTLE FOR YPRES1915' is based on many years of painstaking research by the authors and is written to reveal three levels of actions: Firstthe behind-the-scenes dissension and decisions; secondlythe confusing sequence of events faced by the field commanders; thirdlyand most importantlythe trench-level views of the common fighting men of several nations. From the draconian effects of DORA Defence of the Realm Act and the threat of Zeppelin raidsto government propaganda and the power of the press 'The First World War on the Home Front' recalls how the people of Britain not only confronted the direct threats to their country but also prepared for the fact that life would never be the same again. The Yanks were everywherecomplaining about the warm beer in the pubsthe Brussels sprouts served at every meal and the British weather - rainfog and MUD.They were charming British girls and teaching them to jitterbug surrounding themselves with gangs of British children demanding 'Got any gum chum' and spending their money freely.'Over-paidover-sexed and over here' muttered some of the natives. But the GIs had come to fight. The 8th Air Force flew perilous bombing raids deep into Germany and US troops fought a desperate battle on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. 'Over Here' tells the story of those wartime days fifty years agoin the words of the GIs who came over and the British people who made them welcome - most of the time. 'Among the Dead Cities' is both a lucid and revealing work of modern history and an urgent moral investigation.Grayling details the industrial nature of the area bombing in Germany and also of the US bombing of Japan that culminated in the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He looks at the stands people tookboth for and againstand crucially asks what are the lessons that we can learn for today about how people should behave in a world of tension and moral confusionof terrorism and bitter rivalries. The Italian Campaign was a bloody and desperate onewith its climax the controversial battle for Cassino in the spring of 1944.With the fall of the monastery held by the Germans and dominating Cassinothe way was open for the Allies to liberate Romeand despite bitter resistance from the Germans the rest of Italy. The author was a gunner throughout the campaign from the invasion of Sicily through to its successful conclusionwhen he was posted to Greece. In straightforward soldier's style he writes of his time in the desertthe appalling casualties his battery suffered at Reggio di Calabriaof his time on Monte Trocchio at a forward wireless post under constant shellingof the horrors of the final bombardment at Cassino. He also writes of the barrack room humourof the camaraderie between the soldiers which was all they could cling to for survival in the mounting horror of the conditions they were facing. He places the horror the fear and the hideousness of war in juxtaposition to the serenity and moving beauty of the Italian countryside; the horrors he faced are described not for the sake of sensationalism but because that is how things were - for the so-called 'D-Day Dodgers' whom rumour had it were living on the fleshpots of Italy while others fought in France. This is a vivid and striking memoirwhich encapsulates not only a unique account of the Italian campaign but the whole life of a typical British Tommy. Few of those who shared the responsibility for the executions will emerge with credit from these revelationsbe they senior officers doctorsor government ministers. This is a grimat times horrifying story. But most people will feel that it is a story which should no longer remain untold. There is a postscript to the book by Major-General Frank Richardson in which he explains the attitudes of the medical profession which prevailed at the timeparticularly their failure to acknowledge the existence of shell-shock. This remarkable accountbased on diarieshidden from the Japaneseportrays day-to-day life in astonishing detail and makes truly compulsive reading. As a fitting postscript the camp commander and five guards were tried for war crimes. The commander was hanged in 1946 and the guards variously sentenced to long terms of imprisonment. They suffered and died in unheraldedlargely forgotten minor skirmishesbut on a scale far exceeding the casualties of the immediate assault on Arnhem. They deserve to be remembered. This is their story. As embodied in Magda Goebbelswife of the Propaganda Minister and mother of sixGerman women saw motherhood proclaimed their highest dutyand for the first timethe role of housewife was recognised as a profession.'Nazi Women' investigates how women formed the backbone of the Third Reich by conforming to the Nazi ideallearning household chores and eugenics in the Reich's Bridal Schools and ensuring their children joined the Hitler Youth and the BDM League of German Girls. As Hitler's power grew and war loomedevents took a darker turnand German women became complicit in a chain of ever more unconscionable acts.As well as transfixing the thousands who gathered to watch him speakHitler also enthralled women on a personal levelcharming them with his hand-kissinghis eccentricity andlaterhis aura of power. But his intimate affairs with women were troubled and controversial. 'Nazi Women' explores the female influences of Hitler's formative years: his devotion to his motherKlaraand his awkwardabstinent adolescenceculminating in an imaginary two-year infatuation. It also traces the turmoil of his adult relationshipsincluding his firstwith his neice Geli - an incestuous arrangement that had echoes throughout three generations of his family. The affair ended in tragedy when Geli committed suicideone among several women known to have been intimate with Hitler who were driven to despair. With Germany losing the war and Hitler's position becoming increasingly untenable'Nazi Women' explores the Fuhrer's betrayal of his proclaimed ideals of motherhood and family values amid conflict and brutality.Declaring himself 'married to Germany'Hitler kept his own thirteen-year relationship with Eva Braun firmly in the backgroundresisting matrimony till the day before their deaths.'Nazi Women' is a fascinating exploration of Hitler's relationships with the opposite sexboth on an individual basis and on a grand scale. First-hand description of the retreat from Mons and the battles of Second Ypreswritten from the perspective of a divisional commander who was at the centre of events.Lieutenant General Sir Thomas d'Oyly Snow planned and participated in major campaigns and battles of WW1. This first edition of his memoirs focuses on action in 1914-15: the Retreat from Monsthe Battle of Le Cateauand the Second Battle of Ypres.Snow was a divisional commander at the outset of the war and saw action at Le Cateau and the Marnewhere he suffered a serious injury after falling from his horse.Nonetheless he went on to lead the fighting at YpresArras and Cambrai. On the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916he commanded an attack on Gommecourtwhich ended in failure costing thousands of lives. In the aftermath of this defeat he was severely critical of his subordinateMajor E.J. Montagu-Stuart-Wortleywho was subsequentlyand controversiallydismissed - an example on Snow's part of the self-preserving instincts that he recognized andas his memoirs make clearstrongly disapproved of in senior colleagues.Snow wrote his memoir some time between 1927 and 1933drawing on the research of his first general staff officer in August 1914Sir James E. Edmonds. His memoirs offer eyewitness account of key engagements early in the war and of the transition from running battles to trench warfareand they provide fascinating insights into his experience as a commander. With the benefit of hindsightSnow acknowledges the limitations of both his and others' command during the war.Howeverhe also makes it clear that the unprecedented scale of military operations and lack of communications made it extremely difficult for commanders to operate effectively.d'Oyly Snow died in Londonaged 82on 30 August 1940. In the late Spring of 1917the Allies were in crisis. Revolution had erupted in Russia and the French army was on the verge of mutiny.MeanwhileGermany was winning the war in the air and her U- boats menaced the Channel. As the Battle of Arras was launchedtaking pressure off the FrenchGeneral 'Thruster' Gough swept up from the south to assault the Siegfried Line and the fortress village of Bullecourt.Despite using the the new wonder 'tank' and the fearless AnzacsGough's first attack in April ended in disaster and bitter recriminations.Swift retaliation by the Germans followed at Lagnicourt. But on 3 MayGough launched a secondmassiveBritish and Australian attack on Bulllecourt. For the next two weeksthe Battle of Bullecourt dominated British offensive action on the Western Front. Pitted against Stormtroopers and some of the best units in the German armyseven British and Australian divisions were sucked in before the battle reached its bloody climax. It was the excessive brutality and ferocity of the hand-to -hand fighting that earned Bullecourt the name 'Blood Tub'. The author re-examines the controversial role of General Gough together with a study of Anglo-Australian rivalry shattering the myth of a united Anzac Command.Using unpublished documents and a wealth of eye-witness accountshe confirms the terror rather than the thrill of a battle that must rank as one of the most savage contests of the Great War. Behind the celebrated code-breaking at Bletchley Park during the Second World War lies another secret. Before the messages of the German war machine could be decodedthousands of young men and women had to locate and monitor endless streams of radio traffic around the clockand transcribe its Morse code at a speed few have ever managed since. They were part of the 'Y' for 'Wireless' Service: the Listening service - an organisation just as secret as Bletchley Parkbut nowadays still little-known and unrecognised.Without ithoweverthe Allies would have learned nothing of the enemy's military intentions.Nowin the follow-up to his Sunday Times-bestselling 'The Secret Life of Bletchley Park' through dozens of interviews with surviving veteransSinclair McKay chronicles the history and achievements of this remarkable group of people. Whereas Bletchley park was a claustrophobically close community crammed into a single Buckinghamshire mansion the 'Y' Service went wherever the war went. Its listeners might be posted to bustling Cairo to eavesdrop on Rommel's Eighth Armyor to Casablanca in Moroccoor Karachi for the Burma campaignor even in one case even the idyllic Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean to monitor Japan.Alternativelythey might be sent to congenial Scarborough or Dorset to listen in to German submarines. To men and women often barely out of school such exotic postings were life-changing adventures - even the journey out could be an epic voyage of troopshipsflying boats and Indian railways. And the challenges they faced were not merely arduous 12-hour night shifts of dizzying concentrationbut heat so intense the perspiration ran into their shoesor snakes in the filing cabinets. For all of these 'secret listeners'the experience bred self-reliance and broad horizons rare to their generationwhile many found lifelong romance in far-flung corners of the world. Nowthe hidden story of the Y Service and its vital contribution to the war effort can be told at last. Why it should be that some events are engraved upon the tablet of our island's history while others are virtually forgotten is not an easy question to answer.Certainly such names as Dunkirk and Arnhem will be recalled for as long as those of Blenheim and Waterlooalbeit for rather different reasons. But Kohima Ask anyone what happened at Kohimaeven someone with a reasonably high standard of educationand you are most unlikely to get a very exact answer.Yet it was this crucial battlefought against the Japanesein North Burma in AprilMay and June1944 that Earl Mountbatten described as 'probably one of the greatest battles in history. . . in effect the Battle of Burma naked unparalleled heroismthe British/Indian Thermopylae.' Even allowing for the fact that Mountbatten was at the time Supreme Commander in South-East Asia and was never slow to inflate his own egothat is high praise indeed.Kohimasadlynever became the byword for heroism which it might well have done had it been fought a few thousand miles to the west andas John Colvin shows in this bookcertainly deserved to become.Though the story of this epic battle has been told before it is one that unquestionably merits re-examinationand Colvin's dramatic stylesupported by a wealth of hitherto untapped sourcesvividly recreates the horror and the drama of this crucial battle which was to prove the turning point of the Burma Campaign. Marching deep into the desertthey attacked Rommel's headquarters. At the same timein its first ever combat missionthe newly created SAS parachuted sabotage teams close to the German airfields to knock out the enemy air forces on the ground. Michael Asher reveals how these daring raids were practically impossible from the start - but the volunteer commandos and SAS men had no idea this was effectively a suicide mission.Poor planning and incompetence in high places was matched by fantastic bravery and brilliant improvisation that enabled a handful of the survivors to escape back to British lines and tell their story. From Bob 'Lucky' Laycockthe model for Evelyn Waugh's Lt. Col. Tommy Blackhouse to the tragic Geoffrey Keyes awarded a posthumous VC for leading the operationMichael Asher investigates the true story of 'Operation Flipper': the plot to kill Rommel. The Great Escape was one of the most remarkable episodes of the Second World War.After the attempt to break 200 men out of Herman Goring's 'escape-proof' prisoner-of-war camp76 Allied officers managed to create havoc behind enemy lines before most were eventually recaptured.Now60 years after the eventthe ingenuity of the masterminds behind this audacious break-out is celebrated.Tells the story of these men who managed to break free from the supposedly impenetrable barbed wire and watchtowers of Stalag Luft IIIGoring's showcase prison camp near Sagan. Some of them were also involved in other daring escape attemptsincluding the famous Wooden Horse episodealso turned into a classic film and the little-known Sachsenhausen break-outengineered by five Great Escape survivors sent to die in the notorious concentration camp on Hitler's personal orders. Also revealed is the important role Stalag Luft III played in Allied intelligence operations within occupied Europe: the prisoners developed an intricate espionage network feeding details of military deployments and strength levels back home and relaxing details about the accuracy of bombing raids.Tragically50 of those involved in the Great Escape were murdered by the Gestapo. The author examines their deaths and the post-war investigation to bring their killers to justice. 'The Great Escapers' is an extraordinary storycharted through the experiences of those who lived under the sweeping searchlights of the ominous watchtowers and ending with accounts from the 7 remaining men who broke out that March night 60 years ago - the last of the Great Escapers. At the outbreak of the First World Warboys as young as thirteen were caught up in an overwhelming tide of patriotism andin huge numberscheerfully joined up for active service.Between 1914 and 1918the press recruiting officers and the Government all contributed to the enlistment of thousands of under-age soldiers in Britain and the Empiredespite an increasing pressure inside and outside Parliament to keep them at home. Many were to serve in the bloodiest battles of the warsuch as ex-miner Dick Traffordwho took part in the Battle of Loosand Frank Lindleywho seeking to avenge his dead brotherwent over the top on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Both were just sixteen. Some boys were unable to stand the strain of trench life andoften through the intervention of their parents were finally sent homewhile otherssuch as fifteen-year-old Jack Pouchotwon medals for gallantry or became highly efficient officerssuch as Acting Captain Philip Lister and Second Lieutenant Reginald Battersby both of whom were commissioned at fifteen anda year laterfought in France. In this ground breaking bookRichard van Emden reveals his evidence that more than a quarter of a million boys fought on the Western Frontand that girls also played a role close to the firing lineas volunteer nurses. In 'Boy Soldiers of the Great War' their stories of sacrifice and heroism are told for the first timethrough the use of hitherto unpublished diaries and letters and the personal testimonies of the last survivors.
