‎A Weekend With the Great War: Proceedings of the Fourth Annual Great War Interconference Seminar Lisle Illinois 16-18 September 1994‎

‎Cantigny 1997. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. First edition. 1997 Hard Cover. 296 pp. This volume examines the crisis of 1914-18 in papers and related texts presented at a 1994 seminar jointly sponsored by the Great War Society and the Western Front Association. The contributors from the United States Canada Great Britain France Belgium and Russia explore a range of topics including the mysterious death of German fighter ace Manfred von Richthofen the "Red Baron" and the even more mysterious life of British master spy Sidney Reilly; American heroes and Canadian prisoners; German soldiers; French fortifications at Verdun; the doomed cause of Russian liberals; the Western Front as a bizarre parody of urban life and the war itself as a radical expression of cultural modernism. The book features excerpts from panel discussions and question-and-answer sessions in which the seminar's attendees took part. The result is a work that sheds much light on a dark but fascinating chapter in twentieth-century history. Cantigny hardcover books‎

‎United States. Congress. Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War.‎

‎Report of the Committee on the Conduct of the War on the Attack on Petersburg on the 30th Day of July 1864‎

‎Washington DC: Government Printing Office. Fair. 1865. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket as issued heavily worn including exposure of boards at all corners but binding is intact; foxing/discoloration to endpapers and early pages; ex-private library with label of W.H. Edwards Downers Grove Illinois on front pastedown. The official Congressional report on one of the major debacles of the Civil War known historically as the Battle of the Crater. An early engagement in the Union Army's siege of Petersburg Virginia this event involved the detonation of 8000 pounds of gunpowder packed into a mine shaft that had been dug by Union troops underneath a Confederate fortification. The idea was to blow a big hole in the enemy's defensive line through which the troops were to then charge overwhelming the enemy; however things went badly almost from the get-go when the 500-foot fuse fizzled out and some poor schmuck was ordered to crawl into the tunnel and re-light it. The explosion was eventually achieved and a gigantic crater was created and nearly 300 Confederate soldiers instantly killed but almost everything thereafter went wrong and in the end both sides suffered massive casualties about 850 men killed and a couple of thousand wounded and the unsuccessful assault instead of bringing a quick end to the siege as its planners had hoped was merely the precursor to another eight months of brutal trench warfare. General Ulyssses S. Grant called the battle "the saddest affair I have witnessed in this war" and part of the aftermath was the Congressional investigation which resulted in this very report which includes personal testimony and statements from many of those involved as well as numerous supporting documents. The two generals most directly responsible -- Gen. Ambrose Burnside and Gen. George Meade -- both testified at length and others interrogated by the Commitee included Lt. Col. Henry Pleasants the engineer who came up with the exploding-mine scheme in the first place Brig. Gen. Edward Ferrero commander of a division of African-American troops which suffered heavy casualties in the battle and U.S. Grant himself. This copy bears a five-line inscription on the second front endpaper see scanned image accompanying this listing but all I can make anything out of is the third line: "with the compliments of." I doubt that the signature is authorial -- since there was no author per se for this Congressional report -- but it's possible there may be some historical or associational significance to the inscription and/or signature a puzzlement which I will leave to the eventual purchaser to work out. The book's one-time owner W.H. Edwards was a businessman and bank president in Downers Grove Ill. the latter position assumed in 1898 but the inscribee's name does not resemble "Edwards" at all so I assume he was not the book's first owner. . A remarkable manuscript travel journal that documents the European trip of a 22-year-old Pennsylvania woman its interruption by the outbreak of World War I her subsequent stranding in Germany and her trials in securing passage back to the United States. Anna F. Weil b. about 1892 the daughter of an Allentown grocer John Weil departed New York on June 29 1914 aboard the S.S. Rotterdam a 3400 passenger luxury cruise liner operated by the Holland America Line. She arrived in Rotterdam Germany on July 9th and proceeded to connect with family and sightsee in Germany and the Netherlands with plans to proceed to Switzerland and Germany which were cut short by the declaration of war between Germany and England:

"Wed. July 29. To-day war was declared I have many postal cards written to send to American but was told not to send them as they would not reach their destination so all communication with outside countries is cut off. The harbor is closed and no ships can leave or enter German ports. The English cut the German cable a few days ago before war was declared so now we can't even send a telegram from Germany." p.68

At first the war is present in daily life but still seems some distance from it:

"On Sunday Aug. 23. I saw the first wounded French soldiers saw a wagon full but there were well treated by the Germans and the people expressed pity for them as they were a sad looking party. We were at Frankenstein's Castle a ruin on the mountain which can be seen way in the distance from Darmstadt. It was a very nice ramble through the woods and part of the castle is used as a restaurant where we had some thing to eat and drink before resuming our ramble in and about the castle. When at the top of the town it was nice to look over the tops of the trees over the fields and see the villages and the city away off in the distance."

The reality of the situation however quickly becomes more evident and more pressing:

"Aug. 28. Friday. Received a letter from Angeline dated July the 23d. also one from Frank dated August the 4th. Saw hundreds and hundreds of horses which are taken and sent to battle with the men. Saw many companies leaving it was a beautiful sight to see them march as one man. As they passed through the streets the women came and greeted them and gave them flowers. Horses wagons men every thing was covered with the acorn leaves the German emblem of victory and as the women gave the flowers they were placed among the acorn leaves and so they left their homes families and country with flowers and song and their flags waving high above them. It was a beautiful and inspiring sight to see them go but to think of their return made one's heart grow sad. One company that I saw Company 115 had but 30 men left after the battle the rest were dead or wounded."

Throughout the account her German heritage shapes a favorable view of the Germans in the war:

"In Belgium the Germans were very much ill treated they had to flee the country in 1 hours notice and leave every thing back Elizabeth Buehler and her brother as well as other Germans who were living in Belgium in the city of Antwerp had to flee for their lives and all their belongings were taken from them they arrived in Darmstadt with nothing but what they had on their bodies. When the war first broke out the Russians who were in Germany threw bombs and tried various ways of doing mischief. So all were given a chance to leave and got to their own country. Those who refused and did any mischief were taken into custody and placed under guard until the war is over. Those who did any wrong were sentenced to death were shot. This was at least more human that the way some of the Belgians and Russians treated and mutilated the Germans when they had done no wrong and deserved no punishment. War is war and there are rules which we cannot change and are considered honest in warfare but I don't think it right to torture or mutilate a wounded soldier whether friend or foe."

She remained with family at an estate on Dieburger Strasse in Darmstadt Germany until she was able to secure an emergency passport from the American Consul in Frankfurt on September 15th. The return passage was fraught as Holland America misplaced her reservation the ship was delayed and she was forced to find temporary lodgings in Rotterdam when she arrived on October 1st:

"When we got there the proprietor said all was taken this made the porter cross and he said he would find some kind of place for us but we were not going to take any kind of a make shift so we turned and hurried back to the station the porter took hold of my arm and tried to detain us but I broke loose and Mrs. Kramer and I ran as fast as could when we reached the station we were just in time to catch the other four who were driving away in carriages. The eldest one saw us running and stopped the team and waited for us. We got in and such a time till we found lodgings. Every thing was taken which was due to so many Americans and fleeing Belgians. We succeeded in finding a place at 2.30 am where all six of us stayed. Then there was trouble with the driver and one of the Americans went out and called a police-man and settled the trouble and we retired at 3am."

She eventually landed back in The States after a return trip that saw rough seas and an intense scrutiny of passengers upon landing in New York:

"At Staten Island the doctor came to our ship with a yacht flying the yellow flag. Here we stopped for some time the mail ship came and all mail bags were given over to this ship. Then another yacht crowded with American custom officers arrived on the scene and boarded our ship. Then we all had a hurried lunch as there was no time for supper. All had to go on deck until the dining room was in readiness for the officers. It was dark by this time and the ship under way again. When all was ready we had to stand in line with our yellow tickets. Only a few at a time were allowed to enter the dining-room. When once inside we had to look about for the table bearing the number of our ticket. Here we were interviewed by the officer at that table. Some people had a great deal of trouble and were sent from one table to another. Others were refused admission into the United Sates and some had to go to Ellis Island."

The rear pages of the journal are illustrated by 10 mounted original photographs of her initial journey family some sightseeing and her return passage; also tipped in are her emergency passport and a typed letter from the American consul. Overall the journal is a detailed and eventful original woman's travel manuscript as well as a rich primary record of an American civilian caught in Europe during the outbreak of the Great War. A partial transcription with additional excerpts is available upon request. unknown books‎

With a center illustration satirical in nature of US soldiers with screws through the center of each and FUCK THE ARMY in large letters across the top. Jane Fonda's and Donald Sutherland's names bracket the center graphic. 17" x 10-7/8"

The FTA Show or FTA Tour or Free The Army tour a play on the common troop expression "Fuck The Army" which in turn was a play on the army slogan "Fun Travel and Adventure" was a 1971 anti-Vietnam War road show for GIs designed as a response to Bob Hope's patriotic and pro-war USO tour. The idea was first conceived by Howard Levy an ex-US Army doctor who had just been released from 26 months in Fort Leavenworth military prison for refusing orders to train Green Beret medics on their way to the Vietnam War. Levy convinced actress Jane Fonda who recruited a number of actors entertainers musicians and others including the actors Donald Sutherland Peter Boyle Garry Goodrow and Michael Alaimo comedian and civil rights activist Dick Gregory and soul and R&B singer Swamp Dogg Jerry Williams Jr. Alan Myerson of San Francisco improv comedy group The Committee agreed to direct while cartoonist and author Jules Feiffer and playwrights Barbara Garson and Herb Gardner wrote songs and skits for the show. Fred Gardner the originator of the antiwar GI Coffeehouse movement became the Tour's "stage manager and liaison to the coffeehouse staffs.' At various times other actors writers musicians comedians and entertainers were involved. The United States Servicemen's Fund USSF with Dr. Levy as one of its principle organizers became the official sponsor of the tour. The anti-Vietnam War USSF promoted free speech within the US military funded and supported independent GI newspapers and coffeehouses and worked to defend the legal rights of GIs. ‎The SCOUT'S STORY." By Calvin S. Budding Late Adjutant of the 45th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers‎

‎n. p.: Blanche Budding Flora 1900. 1st printing presumed. Buff printed paper. Modest wear to broadside age-toning some light soiling and edgewear. Withal a VG example. Broadside printed recto only. 14-5/8" x 5-1/4"

A relative of the Buddings said this was handed out at Reunion Meetings and is apparently a true story. Union troops on scout are asked by a Tennessee Confederate farmer to help him extricate a stuck wagon and promises them some Apple Jack in return. Unfortunately for the Union troops the story is a ruse and the "Yanks" are captured by 20 Confederates. While marching one member of the 45th chews on soap foams at the mouth and plays dead. They march on only to get freed by 50 Union troops. The original group goes back to the farmer to get the Apple Jack and tie up the farmer and take all of his provisions.

"The Johnnies took a look at him and then one sed/ That thar Mr Yankee is clean gone dead/ The Captain he examined him sed to one of his men/ He's the ugliest corpse I seed in my life/ and we can't stop long to tend/ to any kind of a burying for he's drawed up like a toad/ Gist roll him in the bushes on the lower side of the road. ‎Spanish American War Massachusetts Second Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry‎

‎Forty-Nine Photographs of the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Most Identified‎

‎Massachusetts 1898. The 2nd Massachusetts Volunteers mustered into service in May 1898 and within a month saw significant action in Cuba at the Battle of El Caney. They were one of three volunteer units from Massachusetts to see action on the Santiago Campaign. The regiment was inexperienced - 55% were untrained recruits. The lack of experience combined with their rifles giving off a very visible black smoke led to a heavy casualties in the Battle of El Caney. After an encampment near Santiago de Cuba in which a large number of the soldiers became ill with disease - estimates are as high as 65% - the regiment returned home in August. Historians have noted that soldier demographics changed considerably from the Civil War to the Spanish American war as the smaller number of troops and the lack of a draft led to a more enthusiastic army with higher morale.

The photographs in this group are interesting as a typological grouping of images of untrained soldiers and also for their historical value as most contain identifications to versos. The highlight of the group is forty-four uniformly mounted portraits of soldiers nearly all identified measuring 3 ¾ x 2 ½ inches each. Other photographs include a large portrait of Captain Frederick E. Pierce with the blindstamp of Goldsmith Studio Springfield Massachusetts and a 3 ¼ x 3 ¼ inch square card of Capt. Pierce in Camp Turner. Also included are two slightly larger photographs on similar mounts.

Overall an interesting group. Good condition overall with assorted chips and wear. unknown books‎

‎Women Nursing Spanish American War Congregation of American Sisters‎

‎Photographic and Manuscript Archive of a Nurse in the Spanish-American War Containing Over Ninety Photographs of Military Scenes in Cuba and Florida Surrounding the Conflict c. 1899‎

‎Most Cuba or Jacksonville 1900. Silver gelatin or albumen photographs various sizes ranging from 3 x 3 to 6 x 8 most captioned to verso. With handwritten manuscript four leaves discussing various diseases. The Spanish-American War was the first war in which nurses formed their own dedicated units as well as the first war in which they were accepted within military hospitals. While no nurses died in battle 153 died during the war from disease. Nurses were responsible for both treating soldiers as well as maintaining sanitary conditions within the camps. Conditions were often poor leading some to work until they were too sick to continue.

The current collection of photographs documents the experiences of a Mrs. Waters who was originally from Groton Massachusetts. The collection begins with a couple early photographs including a portrait as a young woman and a cyanotype of one of Waters' leprosy patients at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. The next section shows Waters' training in Jacksonville Florida with either the Fourth or Seventh Army Corps at what was called Camp Cuba Libre both Corps trained there in 1898. The photographs of Jacksonville show life around the military camp and environs with some notable photographs of African-American inhabitants of the region. Three photographs quite notably show the Congregation of American Sisters a small group of American Indian nuns led by Reverend Francis Craft. The photographs taken in Cuba are notable for their portrayal of local life. Several photographs of military installations are taken around the "trocha" or line established by General Valeriana Weyler from Mariel to Majana. Another notable photograph is a cabinet card of a large group of nurses taken by the Havana photographer R. Testar.

The group overall shows very early photographic records of military nurses in training as well as a scarce photographic record from a woman in a combat situation. The photographs are generally well preserved in very good to excellent condition with some light fading. Accompanying the photographs is a four page manuscript essay presumably by Waters discussing leprosy as well as the booklet Spanish Phrase Book for American Soldiers and Sailors published by the National Relief Commission of Philadelphia.

Offered in partnership with Daniel / Oliver Gallery. books‎
