‎LYON. RUSSELL Alex A. 1845 ca1930; Missouri soldier in the Civil War a. 19‎

‎Describing the Battle of Wilson's Creek and his participation there including an eye-witness account of the death of General Nathaniel Lyon in an autograph letter signed 5 March 1925 from the Kansas National Military Home to Jeannette Trowbridge of Eastford Connecticut‎

‎1925. Folio. Eight pages approximately 2750 words; accompanied by another autograph letter from Russell to Trowbridge 14 March 1925; 4to four pages approximately 750 words with more information on the political situation in Missouri on the eve of war and an autograph transcription by Russell of the long poem "The Battle of Wilson's Creek August 10 1861" folio two pages with his own commentary on the poem. Folded. Insect damage to the poem and first leaf of the longer letter resulting in the loss of a number of letters but quite legible throughout. 813. Russell a native of St. Louis enlisted under Lincoln's first call for troops and served in a Missouri regiment through the summer of 1864. Following an outline of sectional struggle from 1820 and early events of the war given in the first half of the longer letter Russell describes the events of the Wilson's Creek Campaign and then his own eyewitness to history: "The Kansas boys like ourselves were resting when all at once the rebels crept up the hill to the top of the crest opened a tremendous fire right into the Iowa boys and our regiment but we went at them anyway and a hand to hand struggle began . My Captain Cary Gratz was killed . I was wounded four times and the Kansas boys were holding their own. Capt. Lyon had been hit twice once a scratch along the forehead and a light superficial wound in the knee. I was carried down the hill and placed on the hill side opposite the line of battle the valley being merely a hollow. I had a good view of the fight as it went on. My first attention was attracted to my right as I lay there and watched Capt. Lyon trying to rally the Iowa boys who were in a panic their Colonel had been killed and although the Kansas boys had saved them Capt. Lyon was rallying them into formation to use as they were then near the front. All at once I saw him rear off that dople sic gray horse and fall to the ground. Maj. Schofield also ran to his side a messenger sent for our surgeon Dr. Comyns . Capt. Lyon was carried down the hill he was shot nearly half way up from the hollow to the battle lines. The bullet had struck him squarely in the breast and had gone through his hear and he had lost the pleasure of seeing the victory his indomitable courage had won."_The Confederates commanded by Gen. Sterling Price made another assault following the death of Lyon but Samuel Sturgis rallied the Union troops and the Federal lines held. Sturgis then left the field toward Springfield and the Confederates did not pursue him. "The campaign marked the beginning of the war in Missouri and the trans-Mississippi. Afterward the Federal army withdrew to rolla Missouri leaving the Southerners in possession of most of the southwestern region of the state" "Encyclopedia of the Confederacy"._Lyon 1818-1861 a Connecticut native graduated from West Point in 1841 served in the Mexican War and on the western frontier most of the time to the eve of Civil War in "Bleeding Kansas" becoming involved in the political issue of slavery in the territories. Appointed brigadier general in May 1861 to command the Union forces in St. Louis he also led discussions with Confederate sympathizers on Missouri's position in the union; when compromise failed he launched his first military campaign which culminated in his death at Wilson's Creek. "The entire north mourned his death and he immediately became a national hero and martyr . his brilliant work had done much to hold Missouri for the Union" DAB.

unknown books‎

Scarce portfolio of Civil War paintings by the noted Boston artist Louis Kinney Harlow. Harlow was noted for his water color illustrations that were used to illustrate scores of books and which keep the printer Louis Prang very busy in the 1880's and 1890's. Fielding writes "In 1880 he opened his studio in Boston. Since that time he has been much sought after by publishers of fine books his illustrations having color brilliancy." The plates in this portfolio depict aspects of army life and battle scenes including Grant at Vicksburg Sherman on his march and Sheridan at the Battle of Cedar Creek Each is finely designed and colored and each is signed in pencil in the lower margin. The color plates were printed by Koch and Sons and demonstrate the technical skills of the printer and his attention to detail and color registration. Copies of this portfolio were scarce in the trade. NUC lists only the Boston Public Copy and OCLC adds seven others all in American libraries. ‎CIVIL WAR; GRANT ULYSSES S.‎

‎Grant's Petersburg Progress‎

‎Petersburg VA: Eden & McCreery 1865. First edition. framed. EXTREMELY RARE FIRST ISSUE OF "GRANT'S PETERSBURG PROGRESS" PRINTED BY UNION SOLDIERS ON A CONFEDERATE PRESS THE DAY PETERSBURG AND RICHMOND WERE SEIZED SIX DAYS BEFORE LEE'S SURRENDER. "When on that famous Monday the third of April 1865 the advance line of attack on Petersburg found the city evacuated by the Confederate troops almost the first Federal soldiers to enter her doors took possession of the office of the Express and before the day was over from its presses there issued number one volume one of Grant's Petersburg Progress. It was a single sheet twelve by twenty inches in size printed on one side of the paper. Its cry was 'We are here!' Major Eden 37th Wisconsin Volunteers was editor assisted by Captain Charles H. McCreery 8th Michigan Veteran Volunteers and Chaplain D. Heagle. They proposed 'to publish a live paper as ling as circumstances will permit; that is as long as we can steal the paper and get men detailed to set the type.' Ten cents was the price. 'We are not particular as to the medium of exchange; and will take Hardtack Greenbacks Cigars postage stamps and in fact most any available currency Confederate Bonds and Contrabands always excepted.'" Nellie P. Dunn "General Lee in Grant's Petersburg Progress" South Atlantic Quarterly vol. 12. This first issue from the day of the fall of Petersburg was followed by only four other issues April 5 7 10.

The paper is full of joy and wit providing a wonderful window into the mood of the soldiers now that the end of the war was near.

Some highlights from the text:

"For nearly six months the army of the United States has kept watch and ward over the City of Petersburg. Since last June the roar of shells and the whistle of bullets have disturbed the silence of the woods in the vicinity and today the old flag waves from the Court House. The United States armies and U.S. Grant have foreclosed and entered in possession and Petersburg is ours. And throughout the length and breadth of the land the joyful tidings will spread that another deadly blow has been struck at the fast dying Southern Confederacy. Slowly and miserably it yet drags on a lingering existence but its days are numbered and the end is at hand. The bright rays of the sun and the pleasant fresh breeze of this fair spring morning kiss the folds of the stars and stripes as it waves from the tower and hill the streets wear a lovely and animated appearance thronged with soldiers and citizens the cause of Liberty and truth is triumphant."

Under the heading "LATEST NEWS":

"RICHMOND TAKEN. -Just as we are about going to press we are reliably informed that the city of Richmond came into the possession of the Union forces at a quarter past eight o'clock this morning."

Under "WE US AND CO":

"We believe in the UNITED STATES one and indivisible; in Abraham Lincoln our adopted Father; in U.S. GRANT Captain of the Host; and ourselves as the principle sojourners in the Army of the Potomac and the Freedom of the Contraband the speedy extinction of the Rebellion and the perdition of Jeff. Davis here and here after."

Under "FASHIONABLE ARRIVALS":

"April 3d Gen. Grant and Staff and the Army of the Potomac generally."

Under "AUCTION SALES":

"To be sold very cheap if not badly sold already all the singularly ineligible and worthless property known as THE SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY. For particulars apply to Jefferson Davis Richmond Va. N.B. Liberal terms to agents of Maximillian Louis Napoleon or Victoria."

Petersburg VA: Eden & McCreery April 3 1865. ‎Washington George 1732 1799; commander of American armies in the Revolutionary War 1775 1783; first President of the United St‎

‎Letter text in the hand of aide-de-camp Tench Tilghman signed "Go. Washington" as commander-in-chief of the American Army to General David Forman Head Quarters Bergen County 4 September 1780; additionally signed by Washington on the address leaf on the verso of an otherwise blank integral leaf‎

‎Head Quarters Bergen County NJ 1780. Folio one page approximately 125 words in part: "I perceive . that you had collected about two hundred Cattle more and that a further number might be obtained . I cannot of right command the services of the militia . let the commanding officers know how distressed the Army has been and is likely to be for provisions and that it will be rendering splendid service to us and distressing the enemy to remove the Cattle from those parts of the Coast which furnish the New York Markets." Very good. Browned one small piece detached one word of text easily repaired. After Washington's victory at Monmouth June 1778 during which battle Forman had served as an advisor to Charles Lee the war settled into stalemate with Washington's army in New Jersey and the British forces content to remain in New York both sides keeping an eye on each other while trying to provide for their soldiers the American forces suffering deprivation similar to that of Valley Forge. Meanwhile on the day this letter was written word reached Washington of the complete rout of Horatio Gates and his troops at Camden South Carolina opening Virginia to British invasion from the South. Bolstered by American victories at Kings Mountain Oct. 1780 and Cowpens Jan. 1781 and the depletion of Cornwallis's army at its victory over Nathaniel Green at Guilford Court House Washington in conjunction with his French allies moved south to envelop Yorktown earning the British surrender in October 1781 effectively ending the war. General David Forman 1745-1797 born and raised in Monmouth County New Jersey was appointed colonel of a New Jersey regiment that reinforced Washington at New York in June 1776. After suppressing a loyalist uprising later that year during which time he earned the nickname "Devil David" he was chosen to lead a regiment in the Continental army and in 1777 was commissioned brigadier general to lead the New Jersey militia commanding that force in the battle of Germantown Oct. 1777. Disagreements with the New Jersey legislature led to his resignation from that command and he spent the rest of the war running listening posts especially along the coast of New Jersey providing Washington with intelligence on the movements of the British fleet and army a service he was providing at the time of this letter. see DAB Tench Tilghman 1744-1786 born and raised in Talbot County Maryland graduated from the precursor to the University of Pennsylvania in 1761 taking up a mercantile business until the outbreak of the revolution. After serving briefly as a captain in the army he joined Washington as a volunteer and served continuously as an aide-de-camp to the general for the balance of the war. "The amount of secretarial work in addition to military duties that he performed for Washington was prodigious" DAB and he was granted a regular commission of lieutenant-colonel in 1781. After the victory at Yorktown Tilghman was chosen by Washington to carry the announcement of the surrender of Cornwallis to the Continental Congress. Provenance: When recently purchased the letter was in an old frame and removal revealed an autograph note inside the backing included here as follows: "This letter was bought by me about 1860 of Miss Brown residing at 92 Columbus Street Albany New York. She was a sister of an old minister of St. Peters Church. This Miss Brown was a client of Orlando Meads and myself and found this letter in a barrel in the garret of the home occupied by her sister at Manalapan New Jersey formerly owned by General David Forman. signed Dexter Reynolds / Albany Sept. 7 1902. Presented to my son Marcus T. Reynolds." A newly discovered Washington letter shedding light on the general's relationship to state militias and his concerns for providing for his troops while disrupting the supply lines of the British. Not in Fitzgerald or the Founders Online from the National Archives which lists 57 other Washington letters to Forman 1777-1782 showing a gap from 24 July 1780 to 17 May 1781 and two others post-war. 9836.

unknown books‎

‎El Gobernador del Estado Libre y Soberano de Puebla a Sus Habitantes. Conciudadanos: El Genio del Mal Esta Soplando Entre Nosotros su Aliento Venenoso para Perdernos y Perder a la Republica. caption title and first line of text‎

‎Puebla 1847. Very good. Broadside 12.75 x 8.5 inches. Minor soiling and wear. A rare broadside that prints the thanks and admonitions of the Governor of Puebla Domingo Ibarra following an attempted insurrection there in late February and March 1847 during the Mexican-American War. The uprising was a part of the so-called Polkos Rebellion that followed popular outrage at a January law that allowed the federal government to seize church property in order to pay for the war effort. In Puebla the revolt involved elements of the city's military garrison but was successfully put down by the rest of the guard. In this address Ibarra seeks to inspire unity amongst the citizenry and to warn them of the imminent danger of the American army having just landed at Veracruz. The broadside begins:

The landing of Scott at Veracruz was probably the primary encouragement for negotiations between rebel factions and the federal government. Ibarra concludes:

A stirring address and rare. ‎Domingo Ibarra Gobernador del Estado de Puebla a Sus Habitantes. Conciudadanos: La Tranquilidad Publica Se Ha Visto en el Riesgo Mas Inminente de Perderse. caption title and first line of text‎

‎Puebla 1847. Very good. Broadside 12.5 x 8.5 inches. Minor foxing and toning. An unrecorded broadside that prints the thanks and admonitions of the Governor of Puebla Domingo Ibarra following an attempted insurrection there in late February and March 1847 during the Mexican-American War. The uprising was a part of the so-called Polkos Rebellion that followed popular outrage at a January law that allowed the federal government to seize church property in order to pay for the war effort. In Puebla the revolt involved elements of the city's military garrison but was successfully put down by the rest of the guard. Ibarra begins by lamenting the sedition and thanking the loyal portion of the garrison:

And he continues by warning the citizens of Puebla against continued foolishness in the face of the enemy and also by asserting his resolve to resist further insurrection:

¡Plegue al cielo dar à todos los mexicanos el juicio bastante para no provocar sobre nostros mismos otras desgracias que las consiguientes à una guerra extrangera con un enemigo astuto y ponderoso y que nos invade por todas partes! Pero si desgaciadamente y lo que no es de esperarse aun aparecieren sìntomas de nueva rebelion descansad conciudadanos en que el ejecutivo del Estado se sacrificará por hacer que reine en esta ciudad la confianza la paz y la union sincera que tanto necesitamos."

A strong statement by a clearly relieved Mexican state official. ‎Civil War Folk Art Barber Alexander‎

‎A Civil War Soldier's Carved Wooden Folk Art Memorial to his Service in the Union Army c. 1863‎

‎N.p. 1863. Dark carved wood 11 ½ x 11 ½ x 1 inches with bone border and star inlays in corners an inlaid tree with carved names of Civil War battles as leaves. During the Civil War wounded or captured soldiers would often pass their time waiting to return to duty carving relics. The practice was fairly common with pipes being the most commonly carved object and the quality of the relics varied wildly depending on the talent of the soldier. A.H. Barber from Wisconsin was wounded at Antietam and most likely carved this memorial piece while recovering from his wounds. Each leaf notes a different battle during the 1861-1862 campaigns. Barber enlisted in Company C of the 2nd Wisconsin in 1861 and was discharged in 1863 following wounds suffered at Antietam. The trunk reads Battles for the Union and the four branches read Dept. of the South Army of Virginia & of the Potomac and Dept. of the West with twenty-nine leaves naming battles.

The resultant plaque is exceptional in timeliness craftsmanship and overall aesthetic beauty. Barber's metaphorically growing tree is particularly timely for the Union cause as the 1863 failure of the Maryland Campaign would serve as inspiration to Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Wonderfully preserved in excellent condition with no notable flaws. From the collection of Norm Flaydernman the noted Americana dealer who personally collected carved Civil War pipes and had been planning to write a book on the subject at the time of his death. unknown books‎

‎Cuba Spanish American War Leach & Patterson‎

‎Mounted Albumen Print of an American Warship in Havana Harbor Published as part of the "Recuerdo de Cuba" Series‎

‎Havana: R. Testar 1890. Albumen photograph on cardstock mount image measuring 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches on 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inch mount. A view of an American warship in Havana harbor likely taken prior to the outbreak of hostilities between the United States and Spain in early 1898. The photographers Leach and Patterson of Calle San Rafael published several views of Cuba at this time mostly of bucolic scenes around Havana and its environs. The American cruiser is similar in design to the U.S.S. Maine with slight differences - two smokestacks instead of three. An excellent example with minor wear to mount and fine image. R. ‎Civil War New York New York's 11th Mounted Cavalry Nicol RB. R. B.‎

‎Mounted Riflemen. Composed by R.B. Nicol for Swain's Regt. Volunteer Cavalry. Recruitment Broadside‎

‎New York: Jackson 1860. First Edition. An unrecorded recruitment broadside for the 11th New York Cavalry. Col. James Swain led the regiment which was first organized on Staten Island in late 1861. Most troops came from New York City the site of robust recruitment in the early years of the conflict largely from Irish and German immigrants. The regiment saw service throughout the South. The verse in small part: "Must our nation to the rebels yield or vainly call for aid / Our brethren now are in the field shall we keep in the shade. that our cause is just I hope and trust there are few who can but own / As if was the rebels raised this dust which we will soon put down. / Then if you wish to bear a hand you might not have again / A chance to join a chosen band of Mounted Riflemen."

We find no record of the verse's author R.B. Nicol. Curiously though this broadside is unrecorded a broadside with the same song was published in Washington D.C. by G.F. Hardwick in 1864. A very good copy well preserved with some light creasing and hints of foxing. Jackson unknown books‎
