The original paper wrappers for the parts are brittle, but this is of little concern because the portfolios act as wraps. Issued (by subscription) in forty-six eighty (46) original parts, bound in 28 magazine-format issues. 4to. 200 x 285 mm. Numerous engravings, portraits, maps and plates. Though the spines on many of the paper wraps are gone, this set is generally in wonderful condition. Books in parts are works which were published piecemeal (mainly in the 19th century) over a period of months or years. Each unit usually having a separate magazine-like cover. This method of publishing benefited the publisher as it was thought that the price of a weekly or monthly part at one shilling or a quarter was affordable to a wider readership than the price of pound sterling or $ 5.00 for a bound volume. They also qualified for mailing at a cheaper rate. Since they were meant to be bound by the purchaser, very few have survived into our present era. This set is extremely scarce in parts format. The career and accomplishments of the American born Count Rumford (1753-1814) are quite remarkable. Thompson was an active and prolific inventor, developing improvements for chimneys, fireplaces and industrial furnaces, as well as inventing the double boiler, a kitchen range, and a drip coffeepot. He invented a percolating coffee pot following his pioneering work with the Bavarian Army, where he improved the diet of the soldiers as well as their clothes. The Rumford fireplace created a sensation in London when he introduced the idea of restricting the chimney opening to increase the updraught, which was a much more efficient way to heat a room than earlier fireplaces. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! "Francis Parkman (1823-1893) is best known as a historian, and particularly as author of The Oregon Trail: Sketches of Prairie and Rocky-Mountain Life, and his monumental seven volume France and England in North America. These works are considered masterpieces of both history and literature. He was also a horticulturist, briefly a Professor of Horticulture at Harvard University. In 1846, Parkman travelled west on a hunting expedition, where time living with the Sioux tribe, at a time when they were struggling with some of the effects of contact with Europeans, such as epidemic disease and alcoholism. This experience led Parkman to write about American Indians with a much different tone from earlier, more sympathetic portrayals represented by the "noble savage". Writing in the era of "Manifest Destiny", Parkman believed that the conquest and displacement of American Indians represented progress, a triumph of "civilization" over "savagery", a common view at the time. A scion of a wealthy Boston family, Parkman had enough money to pursue his research without having to worry too much about finances. His financial stability was enhanced by his modest lifestyle, and later, by the royalties from his book sales. He was thus able to commit much of his time to research, as well as to travel. He travelled across North America, visiting most of the historical locations he wrote about, and made frequent trips to Europe seeking original documents with which to further his research. Parkman's accomplishments are all the more impressive in light of the fact that he suffered from a debilitating neurological illness, which plagued him his entire life, and which was never properly diagnosed. He was often unable to walk, and for long periods he was effectively blind, being unable to stand but the slightest amount of light. Much of his research involved having people read documents to him, and much of his writing was written in the dark, or dictated to others." AMERICANA BOX 3

He was later Postmaster General of the U.S. in the Cabinet of President Grover Cleveland (1885-1888) and then became Secretary of the Interior (1888-1889). Elected from Wisconsin, as a Democrat, to the U.S. Senate (1891-1897). Back home, he was regent of the University of Wisconsin (1898-1905) and was a member of the commission to provide for the construction of the State capitol in 1907. AMERICANA BOX 2

This was previously thought to be Preston Smith Brooks (1819-1857) a Congressman from South Carolina, known notoriously for brutally assaulting senator Charles Sumner on the floor of the United States Senate, on May 22, 1856 - But a closer look has it as Brookes rather than Brooks. In any event, it is an extremely important speech in U.S. history. It is here that Wester declares 'Liberty AND Union, now and forever, one and inseparable.' AMERICANA BOX 7.

Original full black publisher's cloth binding, rubbed and worn. Hardbound. Lewis Cass (1782-1866) was an American military officer and politician. During the War of 1812, he served as Brigadier General. As a reward for his service he was appointed Governor of the Michigan Territory by President James Madison. In 1831 he resigned as Governor of the Michigan Territory to take the post of Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson, serving until 1836. Cass was a central figure in formulating and implementing the Indian Removal policy of the Jackson administration. From 1836 to 1842, he was U.S. Ambassador to France. Cass represented the State of Michigan in the United States Senate from 1845 to 1848. In 1848 he resigned from the Senate to run for President. Cass was a leading supporter of the Doctrine of Popular Sovereignty, which held that the people who lived in a territory should decide whether or not to permit slavery there. His nomination caused a split in the Democratic party, leading many antislavery Democrats to join the Free Soil Party. After losing the election to Zachary Taylor, he returned to the Senate, serving from 1849 to 1857. Cass then served as Secretary of State under President James Buchanan (1857-1860). This is an important book in the history of the ideas that founded the American republic, but what is perhaps most interesting about this copy are the manuscript notes and annotations written, in a careful small hand, in America, during the Civil War (1863). A few of these struck our eye, and we're glad to reproduce a few selections here: "I have lately undertaking to read Algernon Sydney on government. There is great difference in reading a book at four and twenty and at eighty eight. As often as I have read it and fumbled it over, it now excites fresh admiration that this work has excited so little interest in the literary world. As splendid an edition of it as the art of printing can produce, as well as for the intrinsic merits of the work, as for the proof it brings of the bitter sufferings of the advocates of liberty from that time to this, and to show the slow progress of moral, philosophical, political illumination in the world, ought to now be published in America" - John Adams to Thomas Jefferson 17 September, 1823. ".the danger in America. arises from (1) the indifference of the people to the character of their deputies; (2) the disinclination of good men to go as deputies; (3) and the inclination of bad men to go as such. The rottenness of our law making bodies has reached such a point that if it shall not soon be cured it can not longer endure." - 1863. "Among the causes, which have brought the USA to their present unhappy condition, may be reckoned, as a leading one, the predominance in their councils of mere municipal lawyers. The low morals and the crass ignorance (of these) are not equal to the work of government, filched by them from a blindly confiding people. The conduct of government is the work of statesmen - of unselfish, honest, high-hearted, great-minded men = that class has disappeared and has given way to small country lawyers whose minds exercise only upon petty squabbles of the neighborhood, incapable of grasping the vast concerns of a nation. Bad as this is, there is something worse. and that is that the profession of the law is every year sinking lower in ignorance and in contempt, while at the same time it is rising in power." - 1863. After the War he was a lawyer in York for more than 40 years, president of the Spangler Manufacturing Company, and for a time publisher of the York Daily (Record). .Humphry Repton (1752-1818) was a great English landscape designer, and illustrator. These 'Odd Whims' were dedicated to his neighbour William Windham of Felbrigg Hall. BAL 21846. Born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, Whittier, inspired by reading Robert Burns, wrote and published poems in local journals beginning in 1826. After a two-year education at Haverhill Academy, he embarked on a lifelong career of journalism, editing one newspaper after another. A committed abolitionist, and a delegate to the first Anti-Slavery Convention in 1833, he won election to the state legislature in 1835, ran for Congress on the Liberty party platform in 1842, and regarded himself as one of the founders of the Republican party. Important Revolutionary War era source records published as a supplement to Wharton's 'Digest of the International Law of the U.S.' taken from documents issued by Presidents and Secretaries of State, etc. Includes 'A Brief sketch of the life of Francis Wharton, by John Bassett Moore.' Francis Wharton (1820-1889) was a Philadelphia born legal writer and educator. He graduated at Yale in 1839, was admitted to the bar in 1843, became prominent in Pennsylvania politics as a Democrat, serving as assistant attorney-general in 1845. In Philadelphia, he edited the North American and United States Gazette. He was professor of English history and literature at Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, in 1856-1863. He took orders in the Protestant Episcopal Church in 1862 and in 1863-1869 was rector of St. Paul's Church, Brookline, Massachusetts. In 1871-1881 he taught ecclesiastical polity and canon law in the Protestant Episcopal Theological School at Cambridge, Massachusetts, and at this time he lectured on the conflict of laws at Boston University. For two years he traveled in Europe, and after two years in Philadelphia he went to Washington, DC, where he was lecturer on criminal law (1885-1886) and then professor of criminal law (1886-1888) at Columbian (now George Washington) University; in 1885-1888 he was solicitor (or examiner of claims) of the Department of State, and from 1888 until his death was employed on this edition (authorized by Congress) of the Revolutionary Diplomatic Correspondence of the United States), which superseded Jared Sparks's compilation. A premium of two hundred and fifty dollars, is now again offered for the detection of an error of a cent in the interest calculations, as more particularly described in the preface." Also interesting and significant are the extensive subscribers' lists, which include officers of various American banks, government figures, attorneys, and merchants, etc. - 1799-1802; and another - "Purchasers in the Western States from North to South.". Damp and age stain. 4to. 280 mm. Interesting early full leather ledger book style binding (split sheep), tooled in blind with a wide floral roll around the edges, and a Greek key tool making a frame on the boards. The wide roll on the binding is associated with Heinrich (Henry) Miller, of Lancaster, PA. ** Note also the autographed ownership of: Robert H. Tyler, Virginia House of Delegates" who played an unusual role in the Civil War. Robert Horner Tyler (1838-1902) Captain, Eighth Virginia Infantry in he Civil War, was from one of the best known families in Northern Virginia. In 1863 he was taken from other Confederate Prisoners of War and placed in 'close confinement' as a hostage, with General Lee's son, chosen for execution should the Union go ahead with the Sawyer-Flinn Executions. Union Captains Sawyer and Flynn, were two officers who were to be executed in retaliation for the execution by General Burnside of two rebel spies. In the end, these retaliatory executions did not take place. He autographed this book in the early 1890's when he was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. Though the ink on the autograph has run a bit it is easily read. AI/S&S 42-4343.
