He was a contemporary of Wyatt Earp, Buffalo Bill Cody, Doc Holliday, John Wesley Hardin and James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickock. Thompson had a colorful career, fighting with the Confederates during the Civil War, and in Mexico under the Emperor, before being imprisoned at the age of 25 for severely injuring his brother-in-law, who had physically abused Thompson's wife. After his release, Thompson made his name as a gunman and a gambler in Texas and Kansas. After he was hired in 1881 as Marshal in Austin, Texas, the crime rate dropped sharply during his term. (1800-1874), who owned the hamlet of Ashton and was a book collector. The Trollopes were related to the great book collecting Thorold family, and probably used their binder for this book. Frontinus was the Roman Military Governor in Britain, and later, the superintendent of the water works at Rome. this book was bought from Maggs in 1977 by Edwin Wolf II, famed for his connections to the great bookseller Rosenbach and the Library Company of Philadelphia. French, U.S. District Attorney for Massachusetts, 1906-1914. Leather bookplates of Howard Lehman Goodhart and Phyllis Goodhart Gordon. John Baskerville (1706-1775) was the greatest printer of his era. Born in Wolverley, Hereford - Worcester, England, he became a writing master in Birmingham. He also carried on a successful japanning (varnishing) business there. In about 1750 he began to make experiments in letter founding, and produced the wonderful series of types now named after him. His first book, the Virgil of 1757, was also the first to be printed upon wove paper (manufactured by a process that he invented). In 1758 he be came printer to Cambridge University. All of his books bear show fine craftsmanship and a refined sense of design. In the last few years before his death, Baskerville published a few Latin classics in quarto and duodecimo. "All these bear the marks of unabated genius even in his declining days: and suffice, had he printed nothing else, to distinguish him as the first typographer of his time" - T. B. In 1863 this edition of The Federalist (Foederalist), created an intense controversy with James A. Hamilton and John Jay. Hendrik Boxhorn (sometimes he used Boxhoren, Bocherinc and related forms) was born about 1544 in Brussels and died in 1631 in Leyden. Born a Roman Catholic, he converted to Protestantism and became a pastor in the Dutch Reformed Church (first in the Duchy of Cleves, then in Woorden, and lastly in Breda). He engaged in bitter and prolonged controversy and pamphlet wars with various Catholic polemicists. De Vrindt was an apothecary / pharmacist in Brussels. This work is sometimes ascribed to Pater Gouda (Fr. Johannes de Gouda) [1571-1630]. In the title, Worm-Cruyt means something like pesticide (against the preachings of Boxhorn). The text begins with a poem; and then become mostly a dialogue / argument between citizens of various cities of the Pays Bas (Holland and Belgium). VERY RARE. In years of searching for other examples of this scarce work, we have been able to locate only three - at the universities of Louvain; Tilburg; & Ghent; None in the U.S. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! It was founded in 1892,by reporters and editors at the city's seven morning and six evening newspapers by combining the Stylus Club, the Journalist Club of Philadelphia and the Reporters Club. Most of these newspapers no longer exist - but the club persists. "The club has seen many well-known faces in its history. President William Howard Taft once engaged in bar banter at the P&P until 5 a.m., after giving his bodyguards the lip. George M. Cohan felt at home here. The Indian War information is rarely encountered. This volume bears an inscription: 'Compliments of C.J. Humanson, Civil War Record Clerk, St. Paul, Minn. May 20, 1911.' 478 p. 8vo. 230 mm. Cloth backed marbled boards. On the front paste down is a Nazi registration stamp: 'Dereinnahmt im bestandbuch uber Bucher' dated 1942, and signed by Rosenberg as karteifuehrer. Carl Wilhelm Wolfgang Ostwald (1883-1943) was a German chemist and biologist famous for his research on colloids. He was born in Riga, the son of the 1909 winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Wilhelm Ostwald. 'In the early 20th century, before enzymology was well understood, colloids were thought to be the key to the operation of enzymes; i.e., the addition of small quantities of an enzyme to a quantity of water would, in some fashion yet to be specified, subtly alter the properties of the water so that it would break down the enzyme's specific substrate.' It was proposed that life itself was explainable in terms of the aggregate properties of all the colloidal substances that make up an organism. As more detailed knowledge of biology and biochemistry developed, the colloidal theory was replaced by the macromolecular theory.' The Trollope family made a little industry writing about visits to America, and comments on the land and its peoples. Anthony's mother, Frances, visited in the 1820's, and published a book about the trip in 1832. Anthony visited four times. His substantial trip in 1861 was the basis for this 1862 best seller. Anthony's comments on political matters during this contentious Civil War time were insightful and frank. Neither he nor his mother were beloved in the U.S. for many years. PAIMP 23

The owner was probably: Henry Clay Pleasants (1833-1880) was a Pottsville, PA coal mining engineer and a brigadier general in the Union Army during the Civil War. He is best known for organizing the building of an underground tunnel filled with explosives under the Confederate lines outside Petersburg, Virginia, resulting in the Battle of the Crater on July 30, 1864, an opportunity for Union troops to break the defense of Petersburg.
