post war intelligence ops
R. Vogeler E. Sanders and their accomplices before the criminal court
Budapest: The Hungarian State Publishing House 1950. Paperback. 309p. a few inserted plates fuzzy courtroom pix paperstock is uniformly browned and tending towards the fragile wraps with tears at spine ends. Materials "from the office of the state prosecutor in Budapest." Title reflects a presumed English-speaking audience-interest as regards this translation; there were half a dozen accused from various European backgrounds Vogeler and Sanders were the only ones trained on British or American turf. All are participants in a plot to retard Hungarian economic growth as this cataloguer understands the charges. Vogeler and Sanders in particular were directed by a number of agencies amongst which no CIA but searching at random US Army intelligence aka CIC aka ODI last-named organization being an "extended and strengthened" version of CIC based in Vienna see p.235. Vogeler is said to be "a schooled and trained spy of the United States. He was trained for his work not only at the U.S. Naval Academy but in 1942 he attended the school for spies established by the Federal Bureau of Investigation" --here follow excerpts from Vogeler's confession. Sanders see pp.237ff "was a spy of the British as well as of the Americans" who "trained in England and later in Helouan near Cairo" and his early activities were in Egypt --details follow. Group of Ten Photographs Documenting Training of the 13th Cavalry Regiment During the Border War
San Antonio 1916. Near Fine. Ten original photographs plus two real photo postcards. Most 3 x 5 inches one smaller. Occasional very minor wear. Images generally crisp and clean. A collection of ten photographs that depict activities of F Troop of the 13th U.S. Cavalry Regiment on the border with Mexico in the vicinity of Columbus New Mexico during the mid-1910s. The regiment was assigned to the Army's El Paso border patrol in 1912 and eventually became headquartered in Columbus. In New Mexico the unit's patrol area consisted of approximately sixty-five miles between Noria and Hermanas; F Troop was stationed in the field near the tiny town of Hachita. The regiment played a key role in defending against Pancho Villa's 1916 raid on Columbus and took part in Pershing's Punitive Expedition which served as retaliation for the attack. The images here show members of the troop in training heading out on patrol in their field camp at attention during inspection and horsing around. Also present are two photo postcards showing I Troop of the 2nd U.S. Cavalry which was also briefly stationed at El Paso. A nice group. unknown books

Dakota War of 1862
Execution of the Thirty-eight Sioux Indians at Mankato December 26 1862
Milwaukee 1883. Good. Chromolithograph 16 x 19.75 inches. Lightly backed repairs to small losses at edges and corners. Lower edge with several closed tears not affecting image; paper a bit crisp. Later color added to flags. Chromolithograph depicting the public execution of thirty-eight Dakota Indians following the end of the Dakota War of 1862. The image shows the city square in Mankato Minnesota with a gallows in the center ringed by soldiers on foot and horseback; large civilian crowds gather around behind to watch the hanging. The Sioux Uprising or Dakota War was a series of attacks on white settlers in western Minnesota in the second half of 1862. Angered by a series of treaty violations and other injustices over the course of the 1850s the Dakota Indians decided to conduct a series of violent raids against white settlers after a small party of Dakota Indians attacked a white settlement on August 17 1862. The result was hundreds of white casualties as well as numerous native dead. By the end of the year the U.S. Army had rounded up more than a thousand Dakota; after a trial in which 300 braves were condemned President Lincoln commuted all but thirty-eight of the sentences resulting in the largest mass execution in U.S. history. This lithograph was issued twenty years later perhaps as an odd commemoration piece. OCLC locates copies at the University of Michigan the American Antiquarian Society and the Newberry Library. unknown books

Guerra Leppanen Analisa and Dickran Tashjian
Joseph Cornell's Manual Of Marvels
New York: Thames & Hudsion / Philadelphia Museum of Art 2012. Hardcover. New/Sealed; lower corner of box is dented & creasing. pictorial box w/ one hardcover & one softcover book. 1 compact disc. One of Joseph Cornell's favorite pastimes was to meander through the used bookstalls of lower Manhattan sorting through old books magazines postcards photos and other ephemera in search of items to spark his creative impulses. Sometime in the early 1930s he came upon the Journal d'Agriculture Practique Volume 21 1911 a voluminous handbook of advice for farmers. Though he was very much an urban creature he adored French culture of that period and the book was filled with charming black and white engraving and photographs of pigs horses vegetables and farm machinery. Over time Cornell altered and reinvented many of the pages in the Journal. He inserted collages photomontages and occasional drawings; he crossed out words in the text and made French puns with others. Hand-colored engravings cutouts and lift-ups intricately transport the reader from page to page. The dazzling elegance of Cornell's work on the Journal has rarely been viewed. It was discovered in his basement studio soon after his death in 1972 and is now in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Due to its fragility the work is not well known even among Cornell scholars. Now in a unique venture sixty of the most extraordinary pages have been re-created in virtual facsimile with cutouts glue-ons and other unique handmade details. Included in a specially designed box are a DVD of the entire work including pop-up commentaries and a volume of illustrated essays on the Journal and Cornell's artistic practice. 103 illustrations--Amazon. A COMPLETE COPY having all the maps charts color and black and white illustrations which are called for by Wagner-Camp. All plates and maps are very good to fine. These surveys were the government's first attempt to examine the vast compendium of vital information which detail the topographical botanical zoological and the natural history aspects of a largely unknown West. This monumental work contains over 650 striking color some hand-colored and black and white illustrations charts and maps. An excellent set internally clean in very good contemporary bindings volume XII-I expertly rebacked with original spine laid down; Muhlenberg Library stamp on some page edges a few erased neat owner name on FEP's; pockets unobtrusively removed from rear end papers volume VIII with small hole in rear end paper; some plates from another copy more in volume XII-I; all volumes are the Senate issue except for XII-I which is the House issue. Most title pages with location numbers in lower right. Altogether a handsome set with all plates very good to fine and quite scarce as such. Armorial bookplate. Passenger railroad service first appeared in the United States in the 1830's. Plans to build a transcontinental railroad quickly emerged but controversy delayed movement for about 20 years. Then in 1853 Congress authorized Jefferson Davis Secretary of War to begin "explorations and surveys.to ascertain the most practical and economic route for a railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean." Four routes were then designated one along the 47th parallel along the Missouri River and over the northern Rockies a second along the 38th parallel through middle America to the Salt Lake Basin then West a third route along the 35th parallel crossing Texas New Mexico and Arizona into southern California and a fourth along the 32nd parallel across central Texas along the Gila River to Fort Yuma and San Diego. Another survey was ordered linking southern California and the Pacific Northwest. A more than adequate budget was provided for a fairly tight schedule; these explorations were conducted in 1853-54. The expedition parties were staffed with the nations most competent artists cartographers botanists geologists naturalists and other specialists and the very best equipment was purchased. The first of the above quarto volumes appeared in 1855 and the final volume in 1861. "Despite their flaws these volumes contain a monumental collection of scientific information geographical zoological botanical geological.Upon first examination the volumes seem forbiddingly disorganized; reports clearly were printed as they were received. However these faults are amply compensated by the richness of the material within."
