‎WAR OFFICE‎

‎Qatar & The Gulf States. Hofuf & Bandar Abbas.‎

‎London: War Office 1957. 2 maps 62 x 72.5 cm printed recto verso in colour on one single sheet of rayon artificial silk marked "Restricted " in red. Published by the War Office in 1957 the present map shows large swathes of what are now the United Arab Emirates on a scale of 1:1000000. To the recto is a map entitled 'Hofuf' which shows the Persian Gulf Qatar Peninsula Bahrain Island part of the north-eastern coast of Saudi Arabia and a small part of Oman. To the verso is a map entitled 'Bandar Abbas' showing the Persian Gulf the Straights of Hormuz the Gulf of Oman and bordering countries. Both maps had first been produced by the War Office in 1945 and were revised only slightly for use here. Some light trivial fraying and small fold mark to upper margin not affecting map generally an excellent copy. During the Second World War the British War Office began to produce Escape and Evasion maps for its soldiers and personnel printed on Rayon acetate. Because of the silky nature of this material however which was chosen for its durability and portability they came to be known as silk maps. The War Office and later the Department of Defence continued to produce these throughout the twentieth century covering many regions across the world. The maps take the standard form of British Escape and Evasion maps with relief represented by hachures altitude tints and spot heights which height given in metres. Among the significant features shown are borders highways important roads railway tracks airports rivers bodies of water and telegraph lines. These are identified in keys alongside both maps where relevant information such as "fresh water" is emphasised. Alongside these keys there are other helpful resources for military personnel in the area whether by design or due to an emergency landing. These include a glossary of Romanised Arabic terms and diagrams placing the region shown in its wider geographical context. In 1932 Said bin Taimur became the Sultan of Muscat of Oman his Sultanate stretching down the entirety of Oman's eastern coast. His reign was supported by the British Government which maintained significant control over his land installing its ministers in his government. British interest the area was mainly motivated by the promise of oil with the Iraq Petroleum Company IPC being 23% British-owned and over the following decades the Sultan and the Company searched the deserts in the hope of striking a new and lucrative deposit. After failing to discover any significant resources within his direct domain however Said bin Taimur with the backing of the IPC raised an army to occupy the Imamate of Oman where he hoped to find oil at last. Thus in 1954 the Jebel Adkhdar War or Oman War broke out as the local Omanis and their leader Imam Ghalib ALhinai fought against the combined forces of the Sultanate and the British Army to protect their land from the would-be occupiers. Eventually Arab states including Egypt Saudi Arabia and Iraq came to the support of the Imamate but the war nevertheless stretched on until 1959 when a final effort by. The British SAS brought the conflict to a decisive end. The treatise and agreements signed in the aftermath of the war were heavily weighted towards British interests giving them trading rights the islands of Kuria Muria and extensive power over the Sultanate's ministries. The Sultanate was thus transformed into a de facto British colony. The present map produced in the very middle of the conflict shows much of the theatre of the Jebel Adkhdar War. It is not entirely clear however why the cities of Hofuf and Bandar Abbas both of which are indeed shown on their respective maps are selected as the titles for each. Neither seems to have played a role in the war and in fact the latter was a small fishing port of about 17000 people during the late 1950s. They are by no means the only cities to be shown with a wealth of toponyms covering the maps and so it remains a mystery why they have been singled out as titles. ‎The Royal Air Force School for Prisoners of War Stalag Luft VI Germany‎

‎Oxford: Department of War Organisation of the British Red Cross Society and Order of St. John of Jerusalem 1944. Octavo illustrated printed wrappers 16 pp. unpaginated. Some spotting otherwise a near-fine copy. A scarce copy. This prospectus was ordered by the British Red Cross and St. John War Organisation. They supplied materials and books to R.A.F. Sergeant James W. Lambert for him to design and produce the illuminated report which constitutes this booklet. In 1944 there were more than one thousand students attending lectures at the school. These 'Barbed-Wire Universities' as they were called back then were formed by the Red Cross Educational Section to provide educational facilities for flying personel interned in Germany. In 1944 three separate Air Force Camps were moved to create one large camp called Stalag Luft VI. These schools prepared the men in re-entering civilian life by enabling them to improve their qualifications and learn skills they could use after their release. ‎[CIVIL WAR IN WALES]‎

‎The Heads of the present Greevances of the County of Glamorgan Declaring the Cause of their late rising and taking up of Armes. Published for the satisfaction of all other Counties of England and Wales who groane under the same or like burthens of Oppression and Tyrannie. Now exercised by that Arbitrarie Power and Authoritie pretended to be derived from the two Houses of Parliament throughout all His Majesties dominions by those who stile themselves Committees contrary to Justice and the known Lawes of the Land.‎

‎1647. London: n.p. 1647. Small 4to. Disbound pp. 2 6; a little toned a few stains to title light dampstaining to outer margin of A1-2 but overall a very good and crisp copy.First and only edition very rare of this denunciation of the abuses of the Parliamentarian County Committees in Wales issued at the height of the Civil War.By the summer of 1647 one surviving copy is dated in manuscript ""1 July"" the war had dragged on for nearly five years. Parliament was steadily gaining the advantage largely through the network of County Committees manned with loyal supporters. These officials collected the taxes that sustained the war effort requisitioned horses and supplies for the army and carried out Parliament's decrees. Their growing power - together with the ever-heavier burden of taxation to maintain the army - provoked widespread resentment and in turn revived support for the Royalist cause. This pamphlet sets out the grievances against the Parliamentarian committees in Glamorgan South Wales and denounces their exactions and abuses. The rising it encourages was less an expression of loyalty to Charles I than a reaction to Parliament's oppressive rule. Indeed it contains no Royalist propaganda and no expressions of loyalty to Charles. Instead it reads as a near-anarchic denunciation of arbitrary power itself of its arrogance remoteness and disregard for the people.ESTC R201640 recording only five copies BL National Library of Wales Cardiff Central Library Oxford Folger. unknown‎

‎AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY BRITISH CAVALRY COMMANDER HENRY PAGET 1ST MARQUESS OF ANGELSEY.‎

‎February 6th 1847. 1847. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink & filling almost 3 sides of a sheet of light gray paper folded once to form 4 sides approximately 7-1/4 inches high by 4-5/8 inches wide. The letter has been mounted on a lightly larger sheet of cream-colored stiff paper. Signed "Anglesey" There are a few small ink smudges to the 2nd & 3rd sides. Very good.
The letter is addressed to Scottish geologist Sir Roderick Murchison and concerns a publication which Murchison is proposing and how it would be funded. "Some Estimate of the probable cost of money and of time is called for from General Colby and when it is received you shall again hear from me." The reference is probably to General Thomas Frederic Colby a leading geographer who had been director of the Ordnance Survey.
Henry Paget 1st Marquess of Anglesey 1768-1854 was a British army officer and politician. After serving as Member of Parliament for Carnarvon and then for Milborne Port he took part in the Flanders Campaign. During the Peninsula War he commanded the cavalry for Sir John Moore's army in Spain and at the Battle of Sahagun virtually destroyed a regiment of French cavalry. He led the charge of the heavy cavalry against Comte d'Erlon's column at the Battle of Waterloo losing part of one of his legs to a cannonball at the end of the battle. In later life he served as Master-General of Ordnance from 1846 to 1852.
The Scottish geologist Sir Roderick sometimes as here spelled "Rhoderick" Impey Murchison 1st Baronet 1792-1871 was the first to describe and investigate the Silurian system. During the last decade of his life he chiefly investigated the Highlands of Scotland. Murchison was one of the founders and a president of the Royal Geographical Society and served on the Royal Commission on the British Museum. In 1855 he was appointed director-general of the British Geological Survey and director of the Royal School of Mines and the Museum of Practical Geology in Jermyn Street London. ‎SECOND SINO-JAPANESE WAR‎

‎Showa 23-nen Shina Jihen shussei kinen shashincho :Hokushi sensen hen in Japanese: A photograph album in memory of soldiers at the front lines during the China-Japan Conflict of 1937-1938.‎

‎Tokyo: Nakatogawa Hiroyuki March 20 1938. First edition of this uncommon Japanese propaganda piece recording the opening campaigns of the Japanese in the Second Sino-Japanese War. Japan's failure to defeat China in this war became the key dynamic for what happened in Asia during the Second World War. In his award-winning study of the conflict - China's War with Japan 1937-1945: The Struggle for Survival 2013 - Rana Mitter Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China at the Institute for Chinese Studies at Oxford opens his prologue by saying "In the spring of 1939 Europe was still albeit uneasily at peace. But some seven thousand kilometres to the east the Second World War was already well under way". Just three copies on WorldCat Manchukuo collection in the Harvard-Yenching Library Stanford and Princeton. Following Japan's successes in the First Sino-Japanese War 1894-5 tensions had intensified seeming to peak with the conquest of Manchuria in 1931 and the creation of the puppet state of Manchukuo but continuing to rise steadily through the 30s. After a number of provocations in the summer of 1937. Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist forces joined with the warlords of Hunan and Szechwan provinces to fight the Japanese. Chiang believed that by attacking Japanese naval installations and troops in and around Shanghai he would force the foreign powers to ally with China to fight against Japan to protect their considerable investments in southern China. For three months the Nationalist Chinese armies held out in the face of an intense bombardment by Japan's Taiwan-based 'planes and ships on the Huangpu River but were eventually forced to retreat to Nanking under constant harrying attacks from Japanese reinforcements. The images in this "souvenir" album show the Japanese advance through Eastern and Coastal China; the build up of materiel; the destruction of Nanking; Japanese troops on the march celebrating victories; the aftermath of the destructive bombardments. Landscape quarto. Illustrated title on yellow-tinted paper 7 colour plates numerous illustrations from photographs some on tinted paper stock all leaves with tissue guards folding colour map pictorial endpapers. Original dark red textured paper-covered boards green silk ties die-cut image of the Great Wall to the front board together with title gilt to the front board. Minor edge-wear spotting to the tissue-guards overall very good indeed. See: Dorothy Perkins Japan Goes to War: A Chronology of Japanese Military Expansion pp. 127-135 hardcover‎

‎SECOND SINO-JAPANESE WAR‎

‎Ammunition Manufacturing Report No. 23. Construction Progress … First Report.‎

‎Nanping Manchukuo: Kwantung Army Showa 13 January-October 1938. An historically significant and fascinating album chronicling the progress of the construction of factories at Ningpo near Fuzhou for the manufacture mixing drying and separation of smokeless yellow and brown gunpowder for the Imperial Japanese Kwantung Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Following their stunning victory in the Russo-Japanese War Japan obtained control of the Kwantung Leased Area in the Liaodong Peninsula in Manchuria which was occupied by the Kwantung Garrison in 1919 the Kwantung Army. A hotbed of the aggressive expansionist nationalist Imperial Way Faction the Kwantung Army was implicated in a number of attempted coup d'états in Japan and the manipulation of events in Manchuria culminating in the Mukden Incident and invasion of Manchuria in 1931. Presented with a fait accompli on this scale the Japanese Government had little choice but to back up the KA providing reinforcements for the Pacification of Manchuria resulting in the creation of the Japanese province of Manchukuo under the puppet emperor Puyi but in fact ruled over by the local army commander. As over 150000 Japanese settlers surged into Manchuria during the 1930s the Kwantung Army expanded its sphere of operations and by the time of World War II would constitute a force of close to a million and a half men. This remarkable album documents Japanese efforts immensely to increase their munitions production for the Sino-Japanese War 1937-45. The project documented here was a vital part of the second five-year plan drawing on the vast mineral resources of the region. The photographs are without exception clear and sharp evidently the work of a trained photographer who has shot the various buildings from different directions angles and heights - employing the water-tower to offer an over-view - and has carefully docketed captioned and mounted the images in the album in such ways as to produce a comprehensive view of development across the site over time a sort of improvised time-lapse montage. Beginning in February 1938 the photos depict the stages of construction of the bleaching factory the powder pellet factories warehouses military barracks the drying factories fuse construction and storage facilities the mortar shell assembly area as well as the mixing factory with the powder mixing vats. The album follows the progress of the development from the pouring of the foundations through the erection of the scaffolding and the specific construction methods of the full range of brick concrete and timber buildings even down to the creation of the protective earthen berms around the facilities especially the drying factories and storage warehouses. Other parts of the facility shown are the workers' dining hall the silk bag manufacturing plant powder storage areas fire station the power substation hospital and the front gate of the main factory guarded by Japanese soldiers and a military police station. The rapid development of this installation at Ningpo is indicative of the scope of Japan's expansionist ambitions and of the efficiency of her military-industrial complex. The album represents an invaluable historical resource visually compelling heavily documented and comprehensively indexed to this pivotal point in Asian and in world history as this local conflict folded into that which was to envelop the whole globe. Landscape folio 268 x 335 mm. Tipped in at the beginning are 5 leaves of ruled ledger paper with a detailed manuscript index page numbers lettered in red followed by 30 leaves mostly of thick black card stock with a few of lighter black paper interposed with 323 mounted original silver-gelatin photos 115 x 153 mm many mounted on rice-paper hinges as sequential overlays to show the progress of construction work some of these have become detached; almost all have neatly calligraphic captions in Japanese on the page often there are inked annotations and/or date stamps in margins of images themselves or on verso of the hinge-mounted photos; 62 of the photos are mounted side by side or joined together to form double-width panoramic images. Loosely inserted schedule for the Officers for the No. 9 Buntan Division with 18 officers and 23 NCOs overseeing the construction for the Artillery also a small commemorative booklet dated 1931 for Japanese Navy with a few pencil annotations and sketchy diagrams. Contemporary black leather-grain embossed cloth album with cord-tie at spine hand lettered paper title and date label mounted on front cover. Slightly rubbed with some more significant edgewear one leaf neatly cut in half - evidently purposely to use as reference - both parts present and complete a few photos a little dog-eared some detached with occasional minor creasing but remains very good. hardcover‎
