H of the 19th Maine Volunteer Infantry in 1862. He was wounded on the second day of Gettysburg recovered and was promoted to Captain. When he signed this document Lincoln was "on detached service at Draft Rendezvous Portland Me." <br /> As a condition of payment Lincoln certifies that he "employed the private servants for which I charge for the whole of the time charged and that I did not during the term so charged or any part thereof keep or employ a soldier as a waiter or servant. unknown

Else Very Good.<br /> <br /> The 39th Regiment Massachusetts Infantry was organized at Camp Stanton in Lynnfield Massachusetts August 13 through September 2 1862 and mustered for a three-year enlistment under the command of Colonel Phineas Stearns Davis. Originally assigned to the defense of Washington the Regiment later saw action with the Army of the Potomac at the major battles in Virginia. This carefully detailed muster roll was written soon after the Battle at Weldon Railroad in late August 1864. It reflects the consequences of that battle noting soldiers wounded ill and taken as prisoners of war. unknown

Contains columns listing number quantity name of articles and condition when delivered. Old folds very clean. Near Fine. <br /> <br /> The 51st Ohio Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Meigs in Ohio beginning September 17 1861 and mustered into service on October 26 1861. The regiment was attached to several different units of the Army of Ohio the Army of the Cumberland and the Department of Texas. The Regiment participated in an expedition down the Ohio River in February 1862 to reinforce General Grant and then took part in the Occupation of Nashville. They marched to Louisville and pursued Bragg from late August to late October 1862 participating in the Battle of Perryville. They later fought at Stone's River Middle Tennessee or Tullahoma Campaign Chickamauga Chattanooga Atlanta Nashville and others. <br /> Charles Gentsch 1842-1914 of New Philadelphia Ohio was mustered in as 1st Sergeant of Company K 51st Ohio Infantry in October 1861. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in January 1863; 1st Lieutenant in April 1863; and to Quartermaster in February 1865 at which time he was also transferred to Company S of the same regiment. After the war he attended Georgetown University. By 1872 he was practicing as a physician in Cleveland as well as a director in the Guardian Savings and Trust Company the United Banking & Savings Company the Lorain Street Savings Bank Company and in several manufacturing companies. He lived out his life in Cleveland and was a member of the Cleveland Academy of Medicine the Chamber of Commerce Chamber of Industry Army and Navy Post of the G.A.R. and other local clubs. His two brothers Daniel C. and Frank H. Gentsch were also physicians. In 1907 he wrote and read a paper before the Ohio Commandery of the Loyal Legion called "Instantaneous Rigor-Mortis Occasionally occurring and observed upon the Battlefield" based on his war experiences.<br /> Leander Alonso Poor 1833-1910 of Vienna Maine graduated from Bowdoin College and was a principal at a high school in Massachusetts when the war began. He joined Company C U.S. Engineers Battalion at Worcester Massachusetts but was discharged for medical reasons. In 1864 he was commissioned Captain in the United States Volunteers and assigned to the Union Army's First Division Fourth Army Corps. His unit was ordered to Texas to reestablish federal authority spending from September 1865 to June 1866 at Indianola and later Port Lavaca to oversee the rebuilding of the San Antonio and Mexican Gulf Railway. He returned to Maine in 1866 and was given the rank of Brevet Major. After the war he was a school teacher and administrator. "Capt. Leander A. Poor U.S.V. in Port Lavaca 1865-1866" by Charles D. Very Good.<br /> <br /> The words to twenty-one patriotic songs are printed on the recto beginning with "Hail Columbia" followed by "Yankee Doodle" "The Star Spangled Banner" "John Brown's Soul" "Johnny is Gone for a Soldier" and ending with "The Volunteer's Wife to her Husband." The Library Company's entry calls this item "Rare" although OCLC records other institutional holdings.<br /> The verso is titled "SEVEN THIRTY Facts and Figures!" It discusses the Nation's ability to pay the war debt. "The United States Can Carry a Bigger War Debt Than England." It accuses "a formidable body of men hostile to the Government and favorable to the Rebellion" of predicting "the ruin of the country by the weight of the debt." Rare second or third edition of the German translation of an anti-Alva anti-Spain pamphlet written by the nobility of Holland and representatives of its cities addressed to the States in Dutch Staten the provincial governments of and all magistrates in the seventeen provinces of the Low Countries promulgated at Delft on 12 September 1573 as noted at the end of the text but not printed even in the original Dutch before 2 October 1573 when William the Silent Prince of Orange wrote to his brothers that the pamphlet was being printed Groen van Prinsteren. That is just before Alva was dismissed on 19 October and left the country on 18 December 1573. The text was first published in Dutch: Delft Aelbrecht Hendricksz. Fort Ellis NC near New Bern 1862. Oblong folio broadsheet uniformly tanned. 12-3/4" x 18-1/2." Printed with manuscript additions. Signed in ink by J.M. Mayo Commanding Company. Contemporary "Duplicate." A few pinholes at fold intersections not affecting text Very Good.<br /> <br /> Most spaces available for the requested detailed information are left blank. Numbers of enlisted and commissioned officers present and absent are listed with notations of "alterations since last monthly return." 122 men were present for duty at the post. George L. Medlin was "furloughed for sickness." Captain Mayo is the only commissioned officer listed as "present." The return was completed about six weeks before the Battle of New Bern<br /> James Micajah Mayo "studied law at the University of Virginia in 1859 and 1860. In October of 1861 following the outbreak of the Civil War he was appointed to the rank of Captain in the Confederate States Army and organized the North Carolina 2nd Artillery Regiment Company F AKA North Carolina 36th regiment Company F nicknamed 'The Pamlico Artillery'. On March 14 1862 at the Battle of New Bern NC his company defended Fort Ellis on the Neuse River about four miles south of New Bern. The fort contained eight guns. When the union troops broke through the confederate defenses south of Fort Ellis Mayo was ordered to destroy his guns and the ammunition magazine which contained over 3000 pounds of powder and 500 loaded shells so that they would not fall into the hands of the enemy. He sent his men out of danger placed the powder 'trail' to the explosives and lit it himself. It was reported the explosion was the largest and loudest of the entire battle.<br /> Unfortunately Captain Mayo was not far enough away from the magazine when it ignited and he was severally sic injured. It was estimated that he was thrown as far as one hundred feet by the blast. Both of his legs were broken his flesh and eyes badly burned and he was reported as 'killed' by some observers. That night he was found by Major W. B. Lowell of the Connecticut 11th who had him moved through Union lines to a hospital where he was treated by Dr. Whitcomb. As a captured Southerner under the doctors care he slowly recovered and eventually regained his eyesight. Major Lowell visited him frequently wrote letters to his mother read and played the violin for him. After five months he was well enough to travel. General Burnside arranged for a special escort to return Captain James M. Mayo back to his home in Edgecombe County. He re-enlisted in September of 1862 in the North Carolina 4th Calvary North Carolina 59th Regiment as a Field Officer appointed to the rank of Major October 7 1862. His unit first saw service in North Carolina and Southern Virginia. In May of 1863 his unit was placed under the command of Brigadier General Beverly Robertson. At the Battle of Upperville Virginia on June 21 1863 leading a charge against Union Forces which ended in hand-to-hand combat he was captured a second time. He was sent to Old Capital Prison in Washington DC and on August 8 1863 transferred to Johnson Island Military Prison Lake Erie Sandusky Ohio where he remained until February 24 1865 and was then transferred to City Point Virginia for exchange. While a Prisoner of War at Johnson Island he kept a detailed diary of the day-to-day event of prison life. The first of two volumes covering the period from August 7 1863 through March 10 1864 is in the Library of Congress Manuscript Division and is stated to be one of the best accounts of prison life written by either Yankee or Rebel. With an ornamental woodcut title-vignette. 35 1 blank pp. Rare pamphlet written by an anonymous author discussing the fascinating Battle of Vågen the main port area of neutral Bergen in Norway in August 1665 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War 1665-1667 including its background and aftermath. The Second Anglo-Dutch war was a war at sea caused by conflicts in colonial territories of the Dutch Republic and England. This naval war consisted mainly of protecting their own merchant ships capturing enemy ships and trying to sink mutual warships. The Battle of Vågen was an important naval battle between a rich treasure fleet of the Dutch East India Company VOC and an English flotilla of warships. The present pamphlet gives an account of the events before and after the Battle of Vågen and also in broad lines of the battle itself including all kinds of correspondence and notes from high-ranking figures.Since Tiele attributes this anonymous edition to Venckel it seems likely to be the first edition which Venckel first published anonymously. In any case the present edition is rare. We find only two records of it at auction in 2005 and 2015 the other copies are all held institutionally. A highly interesting pamphlet on one of the most important and fascinating 17th-century sea battles in Dutch naval history and in the history of the Dutch VOC.A few spots the margins trimmed with no loss of text except that the words "Zee-Journael" on the title-page are slightly shaved. With a woodcut vignette on the title-page. 8 pp. First edition of a highly interesting agreement regarding the treatment and exchange of prisoners of war taken captive whether by the French or by the Dutch army during the French-Dutch war of 1672-1673 the rampjaar or year of disaster. The agreement was concluded on 26 May 1673 and signed on the French side by the notorious François of Montmorency 1628-1695 Duke of Luxembourg the French Governor of Utrecht and instigator of the massacres of Bodegraven and Woerden who later that year made his famous retreat from Utrecht to Maastricht. In 1675 he was made Marechal of France. On the the side of the States General and Stadtholder William III the agreement was signed by Willem Adriaan II of Horne 1633-1694 a high-ranking officer in the army of the States General.The prisoners could be exchanged according to their military ranks or could be ransomed. Pp. 3-5 lists the monetary value for each rank. A new version was promulgated in 1675 and was reprinted several times probably into the early 18th century.Slightly dust-soiled with a horizontal fold in the middle but overall in good condition.l Knuttel 10717; STCN 851322913; Tiele 6638. unknown

Light scattered foxing and old folds a couple of short fold separations in blank margin. A variety of bold type sizes and styles within a decorative border. Very Good.<br /> <br /> This eye-catching evidently unrecorded broadside features the iconic Screaming Eagle wings spread and holding a banner which reads "Charge on the Paymaster." Henderson's name and address are printed at the bottom: "John G. Henderson Atty at law and WAR CLAIM AGENT Naples Ill." <br /> The Equalization Act whose terms the broadside recites became law in July 1866. It provided additional bounties to men or their families and heirs who had been honorably discharged after three years' service; and smaller bounties to those honorably discharged after two years' service.<br /> Born in Greene County Illinois in 1837 Henderson became a teacher and then a "prominent" lawyer. He practiced law in Naples Scott County Illinois until 1866; and then in Winchester until 1877 when he became a judge. He then resumed the practice of law. History of Greene and Jersey Counties Illinois. Springfield: 1885. Page 714. Henderson also became something of an authority on Naples' archeological Mounds dating to the year 100 A.D. His work on the Mound Group was noted in the case of Juliet Wade v. Drew Lewis 561 F. Supp. 913 N.D. Grey faux-leather photo album with a small white label on the front board: "42 x Israël 1967 23-24-25 Juli". 44 silver gelatin photographs including 2 duplicates and 1 other loosely inserted. 44 photographs in an album with 30 clear plastic inserts. A rare collection of fascinating original photographs capturing the first Western tourists in Israel and Israeli captured territories approximately a month after the Six-Day War in 1967 by Dutch journalist and photographer Bianca Maria Dony. The 44 photos in the album show the passenger ship SS Pegasus soldiers local people in the streets of Jerusalem and other cities an early war monument checkpoints destroyed military vehicles and other remnants of the war. The album is from the archive of the photographer; some of these photographs were sold to and published in national Dutch and international newspapers and magazines while others remained unpublished.Bianca Dony was part of a group of 150 Christian tourists from various European countries who were now - after the Israeli capture of these areas - able to visit the holy places in the old city of Jerusalem Bethlehem and other places that had previously been inaccessible. The tourists in the present photographs were the first of many and Dony took this opportunity to not only document the trip itself but also the general aftermath of the war.With an additional leaf in the inside front pocket of the album containing notes of how many photographs were sold to different newspapers and magazines including 10 to the "Haagsche Courant" written in blue and red ink and in pencil. Added to the first photograph in the album is a newspaper clipping from the "Jerusalem Post" with the headline "Haifa direct to old city for first time" about the first tourists visiting Israel after the Six-Day War. Some of the clear plastic inserts have small round white stickers on them with different abbreviations connecting the photographs to the newspapers and magazines that possibly printed them for example "HC" for Haagsche Courant etc. 3 photographs are loosely inserted and 2 of these are duplicates of other photo's in the album the 2 duplicates contain a blue stamp "foto bianca dony 147 Malakkastraat Den Haag - Tel. 5582540 Giro 303814" and a manuscript caption in red ink on the back. Most other photographs are simply numbered in pencil on the back. This rare collection of 44 historically significant photographs is in very good condition.l Cf. Rebecca L.
