AN INQUIRY INTO THE PROSPECTIVE FINANCIAL CONDITION OF OUR COUNTRY AS AFFECTED BY THE WAR AND ITS DEBT
New Haven: Thomas J. Stafford Printer 1864. 13 1 blank pp. Stitched Very Good with light dusting.<br /> <br /> Citing "the vast resources of our country and the unparalleled ratio of increase both of population and property" the author concludes that of course the United States has the ability to liquidate its war debt. Suggestions of bankruptcy or repudiation are "absurd."<br /> Copperheads are guilty of making "the poor believe that they are oppressed by the Government for the benefit of the rich. What a responsibility rests upon those men who for base party ends by means of financial falsehoods are doing their utmost to evoke the spirit of the demon mob!"<br /> OCLC 887121042 1- Yale as of July 2024 one of a number of imprints apparently bound together as "Economic Tracts. [PANORAMA - ITALIAN WAR 1859].
Panorama de la guerre d'Italie. Magnifique album développé formé d'une série de grandes lithographies coloriées représentant les combats et les batailles qui ont immortalisé nos soldats en Italie précédé d'un compte-rendu de cette mémorable campagne.
Pont-à-Mousson France 1863. Size of the whole when folded and closed: 22.5 x 18 cm. Élie Haguenthal colophon: Paul Toussaint Half red cloth and hand coloured lithographed paper sides. Lithographed folding panorama showing 8 different lithographed scenes captioned in and beneath the illustrations of the Italian War of 1859 from the French-Italian perspective. The 8 scenes 5 3-leaf scenes and 3 single leaf scenes are assembled to make a single long foldout as assembled with the text: 21.5 x 395 cm; image size 19 x ca. 310 cm coloured by a contemporary hand. 5 ll. of letterpress text and the lithographed folding panorama. Second known copy of a lithographic panorama of the Italian War of 1859 also known as the Second Italian War of Independence. This war was fought in the northwest Piedmont region of Italy pitting the Second French Empire and Savoy-Piedmont-Sardinia against the Austrian Empire and it proved crucial in the process of Italian unification. The text and following hand-coloured lithographs describe and depict eight stages of the war from the departure of French troops for Italy to their return some months later and highlighting several important battles including those at Magenta and Solferino. As a result the influence of the Austrian Empire in Italy was greatly reduced. The present work is extremely rare: we have located only one other copy at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and it moreover differs slightly from the present one.The title-page functions as the front paste-down the text and illustration of the panorama fold out from there. The text and illustration have been printed on one side of the paper. With a French inscription in pencil at the head of the first page. The binding is somewhat foxed and browned the front board is slightly cracked the red cloth around the spine is slightly faded the back hinge is weakened some occasional staining and very slight foxing throughout. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf. XV Corps (The Great War)
A Christmas Dinner Menu - multi signed by the Sergeants
Privately printed. XV CORPS SERGEANTS - Sergeants mess Christmas dinner menu 1918 multi signed Mouvaux: Privately printed 1918 A Christmas day 1918 menu with a black and white staff photograph dated 1919 The Menu: A4 sized piece of woven paper that has been folded in 2 places to create a leaflet on the front has been illustrated by one of the staff a design by hand of the menu and this has been printed complete with the XV Corps emblem on each side of the front cover are illustrations initialled by the same artist also printed; in pencil one of the soldiers has signed his name at the top 'H Broadbridge' and I think it is more likely that he was an attendee at the dinner and the original owner of this menu; on the reverse in the centre is the menu that has been tipped in on either side are the hand signed signatures of attending Sergeants the waiters chef and senior officers there are 27 in total; overall this remarkable survivor is in good to very good condition there are browning marks along the folded lines and a few spotting marks; it is fragile as can be expected; it is nothing short of astonishing that this menu has survived. The photograph: A5 in size and in black and white; on the reverse there is a contemporary inscription that reads "XV Corps W.O Sergeants Mess Mouvaux Nr Tourcoing France January 1919" so this staff photo would have been taken only a week or two after their Christmas feast; it is likely that most if not all of the Sergeants pictured would have been at the dinner; overall in very good condition with some handling marks on the reverse of the photo. A scarce survivor that is somehow still with its accompanying photo of the band of Sergeants that would have attended the Christmas Dinner in 1918 in Mouvaux and signed this menu. On the front of the menu are two wonderful illustrations drawn to signify the end of the war with the ink still yet to dry on the armistice agreement. On one side the illustration shows a Sergeant crouched behind a rock with the caption "The observation post something!!! Xmas 1917" and then on the other is a Sergeant sweetly puffing on his cigarette dreaming of a turkey with the caption "Something good Xmas 1918". A reflection of the mood in the Sergeants mess at that time. XV Corps was formed in April 1916 and was an amalgamation of divisions and specialist companies such as a signals team and a mortar battery unit. Its aim was to support the army in critical battles across the western front where needed. The corps was large in numbers and so had these two dozen sergeants in charge of the men. They would see action in the battle of the Somme Lys Ypres and the final advance in Flanders with many shown in the photo and attending this dinner decorated heroes. A truly remarkable menu and photo from the final moments of the great war signed by the sergeants of XV Corps. . Very Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1918. Privately printed paperback

Juni tot den 6. Octob. 1665.
Amsterdam 1665. 4to. Jacob Venckel Modern marbled boards. 2 69 pp. Rare pamphlet written by an anonymous author discussing the fascinating Battle of Vågen the main port area of neutral Bergen in Norway in August 1665 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War 1665-1667 including its background and aftermath. The Second Anglo-Dutch war was a war at sea caused by conflicts in colonial territories of the Dutch Republic and England. This naval war consisted mainly of protecting their own merchant ships capturing enemy ships and trying to sink mutual warships. The Battle of Vågen was an important naval battle between a rich treasure fleet of the Dutch East India Company VOC and an English flotilla of warships. Twice a year the Dutch VOC sent a treasure fleet from the East Indies to the Dutch Republic with money and goods. On 24 December 1664 one of the richest-laden fleets in Dutch history departed from Batavia for the homeland with a cargo estimated to be worth millions. This fleet was intended to support the Dutch Republic financially and therefore should not fall into enemy hands. Since the tensions with England were already high in 1664 an experienced officer the rear admiral Pieter de Bitter ca. 1620-1666 was appointed to command this fleet. The present pamphlet gives an account of the events before and after the Battle of Vågen and also in broad lines of the battle itself including all kinds of correspondence and notes from high-ranking figures. The dating in the title is incorrect as the story took place from August 1 to August 20 which is why the title has been corrected by hand in the present copy. The present edition is one of two both printed in 1665 but with a different imprint the present one with the publisher and place of publication and the other with only the year and the alignment of the text. However they were both likely printed by the same printer. The present edition is very rare. We've not been able to find other copies in sales records and only a few in institutions. A highly interesting pamphlet on one of the most important and fascinating 17th-century sea battles in Dutch naval history and in the history of the Dutch VOC.The date "13. Juny" has been crossed out on the title page and replaced by "1. Augusti" in manuscript. The work is slightly browned throughout a small hole in the lower margin of the title-page and an ink drop in the lower margin of page 65. Otherwise in very good condition.l Knuttel 9102; STCN 842169458 8 copies incl. 1 incomplete; Tiele 5265; USTC 1802668 9 copies incl. 1 incomplete; WorldCat 85201870 747664026 4 copies; cf. for Venckel: H.F. He fought at Monterrey and the Siege of Veracruz after which he was appointed Brevet Lieut. Col. for "gallant and meritorious conduct in the several conflicts at Monterrey Mexico." During the Civil War he was given command of the U.S. arsenal at Harpers Ferry where his garrison held Confederate General Lee's supply line through the Shenandoah Valley. Despite a gallant war record he ended his life in infamy. He was killed in battle in September 1862 after having foolishly positioned his troops. Wikipedia writes "Some historians have concluded that Miles was struck by artillery deliberately fired by his own men but there is no conclusive proof. The resulting surrender of 12419 men was the largest number of U.S. soldiers surrendered until the Battle of Bataan in World War II. The court of inquiry into the surrender denounced Miles for "incapacity amounting to almost imbecility."<br /> Albert Maxwell Hunter 1833-1911 of Adams County Pennsylvania enlisted with Co. B 1st Maryland Potomac Home Brigade Cavalry on 9 September 1861 as a bugler. He was elected second lieutenant of Company C quickly promoted to first lieutenant and then to captain at the end of three years' service. [England and the American Civil War]
EIGHT PAMPHLETS REFLECTING BRITISH OPINION ON THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR
Boston: Little Brown and Company 1864. 1. Original printed wrappers spine wear. ix 1 blank 30 pp. Disbound else Very Good.<br /> <br /> Published by the antislavery Union and Emancipation Society the pamphlet demonstrates that "the supposed hostile designs of the United States upon Canada" is merely an attempt to turn British sentiment against the Union. The rear wrapper is a two-column list of the officers of the Society including a two-column list of more than one hundred fifty Vice Presidents.<br /> Sabin 16762 Montreal printing only. Disbound else Very Good.<br /> <br /> This rare pamphlet was written by John Curwen Secretary to the Free Man's Aid Society. He lauds the abolitionists- - British and American-- who aid the Union cause recognizing "instinctively that this must become an anti-slavery war." They have enlisted in fighting regiments organized the education of freedmen at Port Royal. The pamphlet describes the freedmen's schools the freed children's eagerness to learn and the observations of the teachers some of whom were women. <br /> OCLC 644153331 1- U Manchester as of August 2025.<br /> <br /> 4. The book "a curious study" of British elite opinion is a commentary on articles from British intellectuals which had supported the Confederacy. The author's close examination of British public opinion is a scathing condemnation of British turpitude. <br /> These were "undeniably able and dextrous writers and politicians who to please the public for whom they wrote and spoke opposed ridiculed and contemned our people and our government during the tremendous struggle for the worthy and honorable existence of our country. It would not be very easy for us to forget these efforts of our inimical kinsfolk or indeed desirable that we should lose sight of so instructive a warning. . ." <br /> Sabin 68317. LCP 11149. The pamphlet reports on "a very interesting conversazione" concerning Dr. Massie's trip to America. <br /> He met with President Lincoln "a man of integrity whose word is to be believed whenever he speaks. I came away with the conviction that he is the friend of the negro and the man of colour and that he has a firm resolution that whatever power he has shall be constitutionally exerted for the emancipation of every slave in the United States." Massie also met with Seward "again and again" and with Chase and other civil and military leaders all of whom favorably impressed him.<br /> "The day is not far off when the coloured regiments of America will be the safeguard of her negro freedom and the security for all the freedom that belongs to men of whatever colour" <br /> Not in LCP Bartlett Dumond Monaghan or Sabin. Liverpool 1864. 24pp. Disbound with wrapper remnants along spine. Good.<br /> <br /> Siemms says "Without any previous intention of being a soldier either in the army of the North or South yet I found myself one fine day an officer in the army of the Southern Confederacy." He gives some details of his unit's movements and briefly discusses different engagements while noting his frustration at the North's exaggeration in reporting its successes. His war experience was brief: "My military life ended" when he was taken prisoner "at Bull's run" and held as a prisoner until the British flag brought his release. <br /> Presenting himself as something of an expert he says "the negroes are far better off than a certain class of poor people in many European countries." He says 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' is filled with exaggeration and "downright untruths." He exposes "the false pretence that the North was fighting for liberty" and says the press has greatly exaggerated the North's progress in the field.<br /> Frederick David Samson Siemms 1844-1907 was born in England but it is unclear how he ended up in the United States or fighting for the Confederate Army. His military records show that he enlisted on May 13 1861 at the age of 17 years for a period of 12 months as a private with 1st Artillery Virginia Confederate with Capt. Johnson H. Sands' Company Co. B Henrico Artillery Virginia Light Artillery. His occupation was dentist and optician. Company muster rolls show he was discharged on July 20 1862. Military records of Frederick D. Three patriotic propaganda posters on a single sheet produced to encourage the purchase of war bonds during the Second World War featuring Native American themes and created by Native American students. Dotted trim lines are printed and labeled around each of the three posters which were designed to be cut out separately. [Civil War]: [Texas]: [Law]: McGinnis, AD A D
Manuscript Document Involving a Writ of Habeas Corpus in Late-Confederate Texas
March 14 1865. Very good. 2pp. on a folio sheet. Old folds some abrading in the margins minor edge wear. A Confederate Texas legal document in which Judge A.D. McGinnis of the "2nd Judicial District" orders those parties holding William L. Carter to report to court for a hearing on a matter "on a writ of habeas corpus." A month before the end of the Civil War Carter alleges that he was "illegally restrained in his liberty" by Lt. Robert Burton of "Alexander Cowan's Company of the Reserve Corps of Caldwell County of the Confederate States of America." Judge McGinnis states that Carter is now apparently being held by another officer of Cowan's Company and orders that said officer "is hereby commanded to produce the person of said Carter before the district court of said county.and there to show cause why he is held in custody and under restraint." Confederate habeas corpus documents are quite uncommon in the market. March 14 unknown

[Border War]: Fuson, Merritt H
Souvenir. A Rabid Rookie's Rhymes. The Experiences Opinions and Imaginations of a Nebraska Rookie on the Mexican Border wrapper title
N.p. possibly Brownsville Tx 1916. Very good. 111pp. Original tan printed wrappers stapled. Wrappers soiled partially split along spine penciled ownership signature on front cover. Light creasing occasional minor foxing to text. An unrecorded collection of poetry by First Sergeant Merritt H. Fuson of the 5th Nebraska Infantry capturing military life during the U.S.-Mexico Border War in 1916-1917. Sergeant Fuson's poems begin with "A Rookie's Prayer" and generally describe the incessant drilling and preparations for battle in southern Texas. One of the poems was given to Fuson before he left home and one other poem is credited to a "Minnesota artilleryman name unknown" but the remainder of the poems appear to be authored by Fuson himself. Fuson's poem "War Is Hell" particularly encapsulates the difficulties of military camp life during his service but does not capture the horrors of war which Fuson apparently never experienced. Fuson does express his desire to return home to Nebraska in at least two poems and his homesickness comes through in others in passages such as "Sing a song of Texas Drill and sweat and dig One Nebraska soldier Dirty as a pig." The 5th Nebraska Infantry had a short and uneventful stay in Llano Grande outside Mercedes in the McAllen-Brownsville region of south Texas. They arrived in July 1916 and drilled and camped until returning to Nebraska in February 1917. An interesting collection of wartime poetry by a young Nebraska man serving in the Texas-Mexico borderlands. No copies in OCLC auction records or any other sources we consulted. unknown

[Civil War]. [Alabama]
Autograph Letter Signed from a Soldier to Miss Lizzie Frazee Back Home
Brownsville Al: April 20 1864. Very good. 4pp. Quarto. Old folds light wear and soiling. In a legible hand. With original envelope. A letter written by a Union soldier stationed in Alabama to a friend back home in Missouri. Signed only as "Jo" the letter is quite familiar and written to Elizabeth Frazee of Alexandria Missouri. There is some initial mention of "Capt. Frazee" whom we presume to be Morris Frazee Elizabeth's brother who was in the 10th Missouri Infantry. The author writes of a longing for home and a good drink being stationed in a dry county. "Our Col. arrived some few days ago but brings us but very little news and no hope of being mustered out until August. I did think that we would be out in July but I guess it is played out but will still hope. I would like to stay until June and then go north. Every thing down here looks bright flowers are in abundance and the trees look quite green. and if the rebs don't bother us any we will not harm them. All we dread now is a forward movement which I expect we will have to join but there is no use of lamenting untill the time comes. We have had no alarms lately but are wishing for one or two so as to make it appear that there is some danger in leaving this place unguarded. Our brigade could not be of much force at present no how for the regiments are so scattered one in Huntsville one home on furlough and the two others ten miles apart and the one at Huntsville leaves for home soon as they can be mustered as veterans." He goes on to mention empty liquor bottles stashed at home writing "I wish the bottle was full and I had it here this evening. I think I could enjoy it hugely for this is a great temperance country the reason for it is that Uncle Sam has stopped the sale of it so you see it is a dry season with us at this time but we expect to make up for this when we get home or at St. Louis." He continues with personal news and some flirtatious talk including about kissing and sending her his photograph. April 20 unknown

[Civil War]: [Texas]: Gallatin, Samuel
Autograph Letter Signed by a Confederate Soldier Stationed at Brownsville an Outpost He Describes as "One of the Last Places in the World to Get News of Any Kind"
Brownsville TX: April 4 1863. 2pp. Old mailing folds moderate foxing and toning. Overall about very good. An interesting letter from Samuel Gallatin a Confederate soldier stationed in far south Texas during the middle of the Civil War. Gallatin writes that there is not much going on but his categorization of Brownsville and his brief discussion of the value of money provide important details of a soldier's life on the Gulf of Mexico during the war. The text of his letter in full is as follows with spelling corrected:<br /> <br /> "It is with much pleasure that I seat myself to answer your kind letter which I received a few days ago. I was truly glad to hear that you all was well and doing well. Me and Milam are both well hoping when you receive this it will find you all enjoying the same blessing. All the boys are well that bears your acquaintance. I have nothing to write that would interest you much. We are just laying around Camp not doing much of anything. There is no prospects of us having any fighting to do soon. The Yankee transport boats have all left the mouth of the Rio Grande. The weather is very warm and for that reason I think will be some healthier than it has been. We get plenty to eat and wear such as it is though we will not grumble.<br /> <br /> Ed Pace received a letter from his father the other day. He stated that Albert was sick but was not dangerous. There is a great deal of talk about peace being made pretty soon in this country but I expect that has got to be a by word with you all down there. We are in one of the last places in the world to get news of any kind and would be glad that you would write oftener and let us know what all is going on down there. Money is tolerably plenty in this country. Paper money is only worth twenty to thirty cents on the dollar. With silver or gold we can get things as cheap as we used to or near about it. [THE GREAT TURKISH WAR].
Bordeaux: Pierre Abegou 1687. Marbled wrappers. 4to. With an inserted latter engraved frontispiece portrait of the Polish King Jan III Sobieski engraved by F. Jollain. Very rare pamphlet published during the European wars against Turkey with a frontispiece portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor Léopold I 1640-1705 Archduke of Austria and King of Bohemia and Hungary. He succeeded his father Ferdinand III in 1657 and immediately had to fight against the Turks in the Great Turkish War also known as the War of the Holy League 1683-1699. This war finally led to the Peace of Karlowitz in 1699.This work gives directions and arrangements for ritual processions that the Turkish Sultan Suleiman III ordered after his victories during the so-called Holy Wars against the Christians. It is of great importance for our understanding of the problematic Turkish-European relations during the 17th century especially as an interesting example of counter-propaganda. One of Suleiman IIIs directions presented in the book for example ordered that one Christian slave or one Jew was to be killed every fifteen minutes as part of the procession. One can imagine the reaction of a Christian reading this text: although the crusades were over this could provoke war and violence between the parties.Wrappers worn and somewhat frayed a few worm holes but still in good condition.l Bibliotheca bibliographica Aureliana CX XVIIe siècle XIV Bordeaux 2176 not mentioning the portrait; cf. Desgraves Bordeaux 1580. Pierre Abegou, unknown
