"Francis Parkman (1823-1893) is best known as a historian, and particularly as author of The Oregon Trail: Sketches of Prairie and Rocky-Mountain Life, and his monumental seven volume France and England in North America. These works are considered masterpieces of both history and literature. He was also a horticulturist, briefly a Professor of Horticulture at Harvard University. In 1846, Parkman travelled west on a hunting expedition, where time living with the Sioux tribe, at a time when they were struggling with some of the effects of contact with Europeans, such as epidemic disease and alcoholism. This experience led Parkman to write about American Indians with a much different tone from earlier, more sympathetic portrayals represented by the "noble savage". Writing in the era of "Manifest Destiny", Parkman believed that the conquest and displacement of American Indians represented progress, a triumph of "civilization" over "savagery", a common view at the time. A scion of a wealthy Boston family, Parkman had enough money to pursue his research without having to worry too much about finances. His financial stability was enhanced by his modest lifestyle, and later, by the royalties from his book sales. He was thus able to commit much of his time to research, as well as to travel. He travelled across North America, visiting most of the historical locations he wrote about, and made frequent trips to Europe seeking original documents with which to further his research. Parkman's accomplishments are all the more impressive in light of the fact that he suffered from a debilitating neurological illness, which plagued him his entire life, and which was never properly diagnosed. He was often unable to walk, and for long periods he was effectively blind, being unable to stand but the slightest amount of light. Much of his research involved having people read documents to him, and much of his writing was written in the dark, or dictated to others." AMERICANA BOX 3

He was later Postmaster General of the U.S. in the Cabinet of President Grover Cleveland (1885-1888) and then became Secretary of the Interior (1888-1889). Elected from Wisconsin, as a Democrat, to the U.S. Senate (1891-1897). During the War of 1812, he served as Brigadier General. As a reward for his service he was appointed Governor of the Michigan Territory by President James Madison. In 1831 he resigned as Governor of the Michigan Territory to take the post of Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson, serving until 1836. Cass was a central figure in formulating and implementing the Indian Removal policy of the Jackson administration. From 1836 to 1842, he was U.S. Ambassador to France. Cass represented the State of Michigan in the United States Senate from 1845 to 1848. In 1848 he resigned from the Senate to run for President. Cass was a leading supporter of the Doctrine of Popular Sovereignty, which held that the people who lived in a territory should decide whether or not to permit slavery there. His nomination caused a split in the Democratic party, leading many antislavery Democrats to join the Free Soil Party. After losing the election to Zachary Taylor, he returned to the Senate, serving from 1849 to 1857. Cass then served as Secretary of State under President James Buchanan (1857-1860). These 'Odd Whims' were dedicated to his neighbour William Windham of Felbrigg Hall. A committed abolitionist, and a delegate to the first Anti-Slavery Convention in 1833, he won election to the state legislature in 1835, ran for Congress on the Liberty party platform in 1842, and regarded himself as one of the founders of the Republican party. Francis Wharton (1820-1889) was a Philadelphia born legal writer and educator. He graduated at Yale in 1839, was admitted to the bar in 1843, became prominent in Pennsylvania politics as a Democrat, serving as assistant attorney-general in 1845. In Philadelphia, he edited the North American and United States Gazette. He was professor of English history and literature at Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, in 1856-1863. He took orders in the Protestant Episcopal Church in 1862 and in 1863-1869 was rector of St. Paul's Church, Brookline, Massachusetts. In 1871-1881 he taught ecclesiastical polity and canon law in the Protestant Episcopal Theological School at Cambridge, Massachusetts, and at this time he lectured on the conflict of laws at Boston University. For two years he traveled in Europe, and after two years in Philadelphia he went to Washington, DC, where he was lecturer on criminal law (1885-1886) and then professor of criminal law (1886-1888) at Columbian (now George Washington) University; in 1885-1888 he was solicitor (or examiner of claims) of the Department of State, and from 1888 until his death was employed on this edition (authorized by Congress) of the Revolutionary Diplomatic Correspondence of the United States), which superseded Jared Sparks's compilation. Tyler, Virginia House of Delegates" who played an unusual role in the Civil War. Robert Horner Tyler (1838-1902) Captain, Eighth Virginia Infantry in he Civil War, was from one of the best known families in Northern Virginia. In 1863 he was taken from other Confederate Prisoners of War and placed in 'close confinement' as a hostage, with General Lee's son, chosen for execution should the Union go ahead with the Sawyer-Flinn Executions. Union Captains Sawyer and Flynn, were two officers who were to be executed in retaliation for the execution by General Burnside of two rebel spies. In the end, these retaliatory executions did not take place. He autographed this book in the early 1890's when he was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He was a contemporary of Wyatt Earp, Buffalo Bill Cody, Doc Holliday, John Wesley Hardin and James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickock. Thompson had a colorful career, fighting with the Confederates during the Civil War, and in Mexico under the Emperor, before being imprisoned at the age of 25 for severely injuring his brother-in-law, who had physically abused Thompson's wife. After his release, Thompson made his name as a gunman and a gambler in Texas and Kansas. After he was hired in 1881 as Marshal in Austin, Texas, the crime rate dropped sharply during his term. John Baskerville (1706-1775) was the greatest printer of his era. Born in Wolverley, Hereford - Worcester, England, he became a writing master in Birmingham. He also carried on a successful japanning (varnishing) business there. In about 1750 he began to make experiments in letter founding, and produced the wonderful series of types now named after him. His first book, the Virgil of 1757, was also the first to be printed upon wove paper (manufactured by a process that he invented). In 1758 he be came printer to Cambridge University. All of his books bear show fine craftsmanship and a refined sense of design. In the last few years before his death, Baskerville published a few Latin classics in quarto and duodecimo. "All these bear the marks of unabated genius even in his declining days: and suffice, had he printed nothing else, to distinguish him as the first typographer of his time" - T. B. Hendrik Boxhorn (sometimes he used Boxhoren, Bocherinc and related forms) was born about 1544 in Brussels and died in 1631 in Leyden. Born a Roman Catholic, he converted to Protestantism and became a pastor in the Dutch Reformed Church (first in the Duchy of Cleves, then in Woorden, and lastly in Breda). He engaged in bitter and prolonged controversy and pamphlet wars with various Catholic polemicists. De Vrindt was an apothecary / pharmacist in Brussels. This work is sometimes ascribed to Pater Gouda (Fr. Johannes de Gouda) [1571-1630]. In the title, Worm-Cruyt means something like pesticide (against the preachings of Boxhorn). The text begins with a poem; and then become mostly a dialogue / argument between citizens of various cities of the Pays Bas (Holland and Belgium). VERY RARE. In years of searching for other examples of this scarce work, we have been able to locate only three - at the universities of Louvain; Tilburg; & Ghent; None in the U.S. **PRICE JUST REDUCED!
