‎Dorrance William T. Mexican American War‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed by William T. Dorrance Advising a Connecticut Relative on the Progress of Negotiations for an End to the Mexican-American War‎

‎Mexico City 1848. Good. 2pp. plus docketing on a quarto bifolium. Previously folded. Some separation along fold lines. Four-inch tear from opening repaired with tape. Light tanning and a couple of fox marks. In a neat legible script. Writing on April 20 1848 to his cousin Edward Moulton in Willimantic Connecticut from occupied Mexico City Sergeant William Dorrance of the 7th U.S. Infantry gives an update on the progress of the treaty to end the Mexican-American War and impatiently awaits the conclusion of peace terms: "The Hon. Mr. Clifford one of the American Commissioners arrived here on the 11th of this month the other the Hon. Mr. Levien arrived on Saturday evening last the 16th of this month and as we now have two American commissioners upon the soil of Mexico empowered to settle the terms of a treaty with the Mexican government we shall doubtless know in a few days how the treaty concluded by Mr. Trist and ratified by the United States Congress is going to fare with the Mexican congress. On Monday the 17th of this month we had news that there were members enough of the Congress assembled to forme a quorum and again on Tuesday it was rumored that the Congress had dissolved demanding six months to determine upon the ratification or rejection of the present treaty. At all events we shall soon know and if we are not to have peace soon it is my opinion that we shall have to march to St. Louis Potosi and give them a drubbing. The question of Peace or War rests now entirely with Mexico." The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was in fact ratified by the Mexican legislature on May 19 1848 one month after this letter was composed. Contemporary news from Mexico of advancements in the negotiations to bring about an official end to the war. unknown books‎

‎Civil War. Publishing History‎

‎Veterans of the War to Whome These Presents May Come: A True Romance of the Rebellion Is the Title of a Handsomely Printed Volume of Twenty-four Pages by Major Cyrus S. Haldeman. caption title and first lines of text‎

‎Boston: Combination Publishing Company 1886. About good. Broadsheet 11.75 x 8.5 inches. Old folds a few slight losses not affecting text. Lightly soiling and moderate wear. Ephemeral broadsheet advertising a new book "A True Romance of the Rebellion" by Cyrus S. Haldeman a veteran of the Civil War. "The story is unusually well written and is very interesting within itself; but it carries with it an earnest appeal for a wise revision of the present Pension Laws which are so cruelly unjust to thousands of deserving veterans." In addition to its narrative it contains "official tables showing the enormous sums of money paid by the Government to our Bondholders.and the meagre amounts in proportion paid in Pensions to soldiers for the use of their bodies together with other information which every old soldier should have so that he may advocate his own cause in an intelligent manner." Includes information for pricing and orders. The verso contains an excerpt with a large woodcut illustration of a skeleton in the weeds captioned "Reported Missing." While we locate several copies of the book itself in OCLC we find no record of this advertising broadsheet. Ephemeral and an interesting piece of publishing history. ‎Spanish American War. Nebraska‎

‎Roster of the 2d Nebraska Volunteer Infantry‎

‎Chattanooga: Times Print 1898. Very good. 29pp. Narrow 12mo. Original red cloth cover gilt. Spine heavily chipped corners worn. Contemporary ownership inscription on front pastedown contemporary notations to several leaves. Regimental roster for the Second Nebraska Volunteers mustered into service for the Spanish American War at Lincoln in May 1898. The regiment consisted of forty-six officers and 975 enlisted men each detailed herein by company. The regiment never saw active duty spending time training at Chickamauga before being transferred to Omaha and then mustered out in October of the same year. This copy with the ownership inscription of Irene G. Courtnay dated September 2 1898. Irene has made notations about several of the men -- presumably friends or acquaintances -- in the Remarks section of some pages. On the page for Company B she has written "Ernest G. Briggs drowned in Chickamauga Creek. 1st death in 2nd Neb. Regiment." Rare and likely produced in limited numbers for friends and family. Only a single photocopy reproduction located in OCLC. An interesting piece of Western Americana from this mostly-forgotten episode in American history. Times Print unknown books‎

Congress passed an amendment to the Enrollment Act on March 3 1865; this is sometimes referred to itself as the Enrollment Act of 1865. Section 21 of the Act 13 Stat. 490 imposed denationalization loss of citizenship as a penalty for draft evasion or desertion. Justice John Marshall Harlan II's dissent in Afroyim v. ‎CALHOUN John C 1782 1850 US Vice President Secretary of War defender of slavery‎

‎SIGNED PRINTED DOCUMENT 9-1/2 x 8 in AS SECRETARY OF WAR‎

‎1818. Calhoun signed the Revolutionary War pension claim of Robert Hamilton of Massachusetts who had been a Lieutenant in the Army of the Revolution. Some marginal chiping and tears at the fold affecting the "J" in the signature of J.C. Calhoun. A good copy. Wikipedia: "John Caldwell Calhoun:March 18 1782 - March 31 1850 was an American statesman and political theorist from South Carolina who is best remembered for his strong defense of slavery and for advancing the concept of minority rights in politics which he did in the context of defending Southern values from perceived Northern threats. He began his political career as a nationalist modernizer and proponent of a strong national government and protective tariffs. By the late 1820s his views reversed and he became a leading proponent of states' rights limited government nullification and opposition to high tariffs-he saw Northern acceptance of these policies as the only way to keep the South in the Union. His beliefs and warnings heavily influenced the South's secession from the Union in 1860-61. Calhoun began his political career with election to the House of Representatives. As a prominent leader of the war hawk faction Calhoun strongly supported the War of 1812 to defend American honor against Britain. He then served as Secretary of War under President James Monroe and in his position reorganized and modernized the War Department. In the 1824 presidential election he was the overwhelming choice of the electoral college for Vice President of the United States. He served under John Quincy Adams and continued under Andrew Jackson who defeated Adams in 1828. unknown books‎
