‎[Military & War] [Barbados] [Race] [John R Eggleston]‎

‎1858 letter written aboard the USS Atlanta in Barbados from a future officer in the Confederate Navy and witness to the battle of the Monitor and Merrimac. Contents include a racist rant against free blacks in Barbados‎

‎Barbados: n.p. 1858. Letter. Good. Letter. 8" x 10". 4 pages. 3 pages of contents. Page 4 clipped section at bottom. Paper folded and in very good condition otherwise.

Letter written aboard the USS Atlanta at Barbados December 27 1858. Eggleston writes: "I am perfectly willing to leave Barbados and its free impertinent darkies. I would like to lasso some 50 or 100 and put them to work in a cotton field. I am convinced that such a field is the only one in which the darky character can be truly developed. Here they do nothing but stroll about the streets & chatter like so many monkeys from sunrise to sunset. We employ them to coal our vessels and how I have wished for Jack Stringer with a bull whip among them whenever I have had anything to do with them".

Eggleston would later serve as a Lieutenant on the CSS Virginia and was later promoted to Captain in the Confederate Navy. Eggleston was one of the lieutenants of the Virginia Merrimac during its life under the Confederate flag. During his life Eggleston provided details of the legendary battle of the two ironclad ships which can be found under various web sites. n.p. unknown‎

‎[World War I – Ottoman Empire – Turkish War of Independence] "HC" H C‎

‎Letters Home from an American Professor Working in the Ottoman Empire in the Aftermath of World War I.‎

‎Constantinople New York City and others 1922. Four letters totaling seven pages. Folded else fine. A small collection of letters from “H.C.†who seems to have been an American university professor in Constantinople to his “Darling Clementine†back home. H.C. may have taught at Robert College a Christian college founded in 1863 now a prestigious private highschool.

It is not clear when H.C. first arrived in Constantinople but he had been there for several years already by the time the letters begin and was certainly there at a critical point in its history. He writes in 1918 shortly after the arrival of occupying forces:

“conditions are still very bad in town I long to see the suffering diminished. Some say it will be months yet. Sometimes now there is no coal no electric light no bread no water. Can you imagine the state of an Oriental city under such conditions We have had are still having trouble about light water-supply but we have steam heat plenty of food of a plain kind. We all keep well. . I hear that an American Red Cross boat will arrive next week I am eager to see its passengers. We may have a chance to leave on it but I can not see my way clear to skip because our faculty is depleted ever since the exodus at the time of the panic long ago when Miss Lyon left. . We have a good college now – boarders about 90 in the College-department – and many day scholars but lately the Spanish fever the lack of tram-car service has kept many students away. As soon as our cousins supply coal we hope for improvement. The Ententists are spreading over the city thoroughly quietly – like oil. It is a delight to see so many manly looking officers after the ones we have had here for years. There is a spiritual look in the eyes of the present occupants a look of bull-dog determination.†December 6 1918

H.C. enjoys a “real yachting cruise†on his way back to Constantinople from the States in 1921 tells Clementine about his plans for his commencement speech in 1922 and describes a college reception in New York City which “General Custer’s wife†Elizabeth Bacon Custer attended undated letter. Meanwhile Turkey was engaged in its brutal war for independence. At some point H.C. befriended Electra—probably a Greek woman—whom he sent along to visit Clementine in part to help Electra cope with her traumatic experiences during the war:

“As you will recall my young friend’s father was executed – tho innocent – with about 70 others. At first E. bore this with wonderful fortitude but after Xmas a reaction set in naturally enough. She developed morbidness a hyper sensitive attitude toward all of my looks words – probably a condition due to shock. I am confident that travel new scenes interests will bring her back to her old self your wholesome household will chase all gloom away. A doctor told her lately that she has hysteria that she must think of cheerful things only. I tell you this thinking that you might keep her from talking about the nation that does cruel things. The truth is that cruelty is pretty generally distributed a judicial mind finds it difficult to pick choose. Some nations get the public ear so the pot can call the kettle black!†June 6 1922

Indeed both sides of the Greco-Turkish war—part of the larger Turkish campaign for independence—massacred each other. However only the Turkish contingent’s actions have been argued by historians to constitute ethnic cleansing or genocide.

Of interest to historians of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey post-World War I especially Americans’ experience thereof. unknown‎

‎[Militaria] [War Crimes]. SCOTT, VX14040 Captain Eric Walter‎

‎An important and substantial dossier of depositions and interrogation reports compiled by Captain E.W. Scott 2 Australian War Crimes Section investigating alleged war crimes and the fate of allied soldiers in New Guinea during the Second World War‎

‎First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Foolscap folio 253 leaves of duplicate typescript printed rectos only containing 118 depositions or interrogation reports of between 1 and 6 pages each with several diagrams some in colour. Post-bound in the original cloth-backed folder now a little creased and worn with three holes punched in the front cover; one leaf detached; a few tears and other signs of age and use; overall in very good condition. These retained duplicate typescripts comprise 51 depositions signed by the deponent interpreter if applicable and Scott as Investigating Officer and 67 interrogation reports signed by Scott alone. The interrogations took place between 13 January 1949 and 27 January 1950 in Tokyo. The investigation focuses on the activities of the Nankai Shitai South Seas Detachment of the Japanese Army and the Kempeitai Military Police in relation to the treatment of prisoners of war and non-combatants in the Madang area of northern New Guinea.
Many of the interrogations concern: the capture of VX148 Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Samuel Key commanding officer of 2/14th Australian Infantry Battalion captured near Kokoda in 1942 and presumed dead; the disappearance of missionaries near Alexishafen; the execution and mistreatment of local 'native' people; and the fate of a downed aircrew brought aboard the ship 'Matsue Maru' in the Coral Sea.
Several of the depositions give first- or second-hand accounts of the execution of prisoners. One gives an eye-witness account of the massacre of some 300 Australian troops at Laha airfield Ambon with diagrams showing the sites of the executions. Another describes the execution of Australian airmen at Matupi crater near Rabaul also with a diagram. In yet another Colonel Miki professes to be shocked to hear of the maltreatment of prisoners by soldiers under his command: 'I was very surprised to hear about the unhappy event and the circumstances under which an Australian soldier was drowned and the subsequent torture and ill-treatment of witnesses which followed . I never heard any complaints from the prisoners'.
Elsewhere there are references to Changi Sandakan prisoners of war sent to Japan Blakang Mati Sentosa and United States Air Force personnel.
The files are arranged in reverse chronological order with the most recent at the top and a manuscript index of the files compiled by Scott quarto 3 leaves rectos only is mounted on the inside surface of the front cover. hardcover‎

The unit was re-designated as the 4th Cavalry Group Mechanized with M5 light tanks M8 armored cars and M3 half-tracks. The regiment was the armored reconnaissance force for the VII Corps and the regiment was the first unit ashore on Utah Beach on June 6th 1944. The 4th Cavalry was awarded the Croix de Guerre for its actions during the Battle of Cherbourg in July 1944. The regiment was in the van for the great Allied drive across France and into Belgium. They played a critical role during the Battle of the Bulge attacking at Bogheim into some of the best units in the German army and capturing critical ground at great cost. The regiment received a Presidential Unit Citation for this action.

OCLC locates only 2 copies held at the US Army War College and Western Reserve Historical Society. unknown‎

‎(Mexican War) [Pillow, Gideon J]‎

‎Defence of Major Gen. Pillow before the Court of Inquiry at Frederick Maryland against the charges preferred against him by Maj. Gen. Winfield Scott‎

‎Np 1848. First and only edition. 64pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Publisher's brown wrappers stained and toned. Internally very good. First and only edition. 64pp. 1 vols. 8vo. General Winfield Scott charged Pillow with the authorship of a pseudonymously signed letter - the so-called Leonidas Letter - published in the NEW ORLEANS DAILY DELTA on Sept. 10 1847 in which Pillow's military activities at Contreras and Churubusco were applauded and those of Gen. Scott were belittled. The two quarreled violently and two successive courts of inquiry decided that no action should be taken against Pillow. The present pamphlet defends Pillow's position. ‎[Civil War] [Philadelphia Weekly Press]‎

‎1885-1887 correspondence sent to the Philadelphia Weekly Press regarding publication of Pennsylvania Volunteers experiences during the Civil War‎

‎Philadelphia: n/p 1887. Letters. Good. Letters. Lot of 10 letters possibly disbound from a larger collection. These letters were written in response to requested articles by the Editor of the Philadelphia Weekly Press. Letters written on good paper are pasted down on brown paper that is fragile with small edge tears and chips. Later short abbreviated notes written in pencil on the letters. Content of the replies are varied and provide additional primary source information and insights for the Editor of the Weekly Press. Contents are mostly legible. A summary of the letters follows:

First letter is dated December 12 1885 and signed by William E. Miller. The letter is one page and written on his hardware store letterhead in Carlisle Pennsylvania. Letter reads: . "After writing you this afternoon I called upon Col. Sharp and told him What I done - the Col. replied that he the article without a view to its publication but of it was desired he would not object he says the article covers 32 pages of legal of words to a line - 21 pages are descriptive of the battle and its incidents and the last 11 pages are made of reminiscences of officers in Command of Regiments the battery the squadron of Calvary and the Commanders of Brigade and Division Commanders all of whom are dead though the article is in two parts he would object to it being printed separately. Very truly signed Wm. E. Bell To Editor of Weekly Press."

Second letter is one page and dated Dec. 28th 1885. The correspondence is written on "Humboldt Safe Deposit & Trust Co" letterhead and signed by John C. Hilton at the bottom. Hilton writes the editor "In the matter of writing a history of the 145th P.V. during the battle of Gettysburg I must inform you I hardly feel competent to undertake it. The Gen would be the proper person had he been in the action and as for myself I was severely wounded at the time and cannot give as good a discription as one who passed through the engagement unscathed."

Third letter is one page and a back and correspondence written on the Philadelphia Weekly Press letterhead dated December 31 1885. The editor of the paper requests of W. Hayes Grier "Can you prepare for publication in the weekly press the war article as indicated in a invitation sent to you some months ago If so please indicate when we may expect the manuscript Yours Truly Editor "Weekly Press". W. Hayes Grier response ."I will prepare the article and forward it in February."

Fourth letter is one page and dated Jan 2d 1886. Correspondence is signed by "Wm. H. Grovinger." Written neatly from "Port Royal Juanita Co. Penna Grovinger writes "Mr. Editor Dear Sir I have in my possession a very interesting manuscript relating to the life of one of the brave defenders of the Union his trials and hardships while in Southern Prisons his several escapes from the same with his reasons for Sustaining the actions of the Government in its exchange policy it is written in good style but I think as it was intended for the use of his family some parts would not be suited for the general reader I will carefully compile it for publication Please give me your plan of publication and whether I will I would be compensated for my trouble I can vouch for the entire truthfulness of the manuscript."

Fifth letter is 2 pages and written on United States Treasury Department letterhead and dated January 7 1886. The letter is signed at the bottom of page 2 by "A M Judson late Capt Co. E. 83 PV". Judson writes I answered the first letter Dec 10 85 stating in substance that in 1865 I wrote & published the "History of the 83d Regt P.V." when all the events therein detailed were fresh in my memory & when I was much more in the humor for description then than & that if the description of the Gettysburg fight there given would suit your purpose you are at liberty to use it." Judson points the editor to getting a copy of his book for the purpose of placing an article in the paper.

Sixth letter is one page and dated February 11 1886. Letter has a blue ink stamp upper left corner from "J. Merrill Linn Attorney-At-Law Lewisburg Penna" and signed by Linn at the bottom. Linn writes of another regimental officer "Gobins Regiment saved Bancks Army on the Red River - is Pa Reg't took Stone Bridge at Roanoke - A Pa. Reg't captured by assault the first at New Berne.". He also writes "If it won't interfere with Gen Hartranft I would like to write the Battle of New Berne. We planted the old Fourth Pa. Flag first in the earth works."

Seventh letter is two separate pages written on "D. R. P. Hibbs. Attorney At Law." letterhead in Albert Lea Minn. and dated February 20 1886. Hibbs writes "to the prep of an article for "The Press of the 104" P Vols. in the war I would say that Gen. Davis as an a war hero published a history of the 104" Hibbs is asking to the editor to give some advice on how Hibbs can add more to the unit history.

Eighth letter is 2 pages long and dated May 17 1886. Written on "J. H. Longnecker Attorney at Law" letterhead and signed by Longnecker at the end. He writes "I rec'd yours of April 29 in regard to writing a sketch of the 101 Pa. Regt. I delayed writing in reply hoping to see you personally in Phila. last week while attending the Supreme Court." Longnecker states that he has other commitments including a Congressional nomination that keeps him from "gathering up facts and writing such a paper."

Ninth letter is a second letter signed by W. Hayes Grier on "Office of Superintendent of Public Printing. Harrisburg Pa." letterhead and dated January 10 1887. Hayes updates the editor on his delayed article is a result "that I had lost the most important one issued by Gen. Cameron on Dranesville. I wrote to the Sec. of War and asked him to send me a copy giving him the date. Today I received it and I will at once prepare the orders and send them to you with remarks explanatory of each."

The tenth and final letter in this group is dated May 23 1887. Letter written from Brookline Mass and signed by Theodore Lyman at bottom. The correspondence is very short and written in a shaky hand - "Dear Sir As I joined Gen Meade's staff after Gettysburg it would not be possible for me to write the paper you ask for." Officers that replied the editor's request include Captain William E. Miller.

From wikipedia: Miller received his country's highest award for bravery during combat the Medal of Honor for actions taken on July 3 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg. While ordered to keep his company stationed on a hill he disobeyed these orders to lead a surprise attack against a Confederate charge. On July 3 Miller was given orders to hold his company "at all hazards"9 in the woods north of the Lott house and assist the 1st New Jersey Cavalry Regiment in repelling Brigadier General Wade Hampton's advance.5 When the enemy brigade advanced Miller noticed a large contingent led by Confederate Brigadier General Fitzhugh Lee threatening to break through a main section of the Union line.8 From his flank position he decided to disobey his orders and attack the Confederate from the side and stated to his adjutants "I have been ordered to hold this position but if you will back me up in case I am court-martialed for disobedience I will order a charge."810 With full company agreement Miller led his men into the flank of the Confederate advance causing confusion among the rebels who believed their retreat path was about to be cut off.9 Because of Miller's surprise attack the Confederate rear line was dispersed511 and the Union line saved.310

John C. Hilton writes in his letter that he was severely injured in his correspondence. From find a grave dot com - "Case 454. — Captain John C. Hilton Co. K 145th Pennsylvania aged 22 years was wounded at Gettysburg July 2 1863 by a conoidal ball which fractured the right femur in its upper third. He was carried to the field hospital of the 1st division of the Second Corps where Surgeon C. S. Wood 66th New York reports: "The bone was extensively comminuted. The patient entered Camp Letterman hospital August 5th where Acting Assistant Surgeon B. F. August 20th still improving all ligatures were removed the stump healing rapidly. On the 25th the stump had entirely healed and on September 1st he left the hospital on leave of absence." This officer was discharged December 19 1863 entered the Veteran Reserve Corps February 5 1804 was mustered out of service June 30 1866 and pensioned. ‎[Civil War] [Confederacy] [3rd Tennessee Cavalry] [Sam Elder] [Thomas Cavender]‎

‎1863 hand written contract by which Sam Elder hired Thomas Cavender as a Substitute Soldier to serve in the Confederate Army in his stead‎

‎Hamilton County Tennessee: n/a 1863. Document. Good. Document. Folded sheet of paper. 9" x 5". Paper has blue lines and multiple folds. 4 pages with 2 pages of content. Some fading to the ink and light toning to the paper. Chattanooga Tennessee is the seat of Hamilton County. Hand written document transcribed here: "State of Tennessee Hamilton County I Sam Elder of said County and State have this day hired Thomas Cavender as a substitute to serve as a Private in Capt J B Kings company or Capt Lyness for which I agree to pay the said Cavender one thousand dollars in hand & the other thousand dollars to be paid in three months from this date and to be loned at interest for twelve months two years is the time of service I have hired the said Thos Cavender now if the said Cavendar serves faithful as a substitute for the time of two years and at the expiration of that time the said Elder to take his place the one thousand dollars that is to be loned if the said Cavender should desert is to come to me the said Elder given under our hands this 30th day of April 1863 attest Wm Caruthers and Bob Caruthers signed seal S. H. Elder signed seal Thos Cavender." A Confederate soldier who paid another person to take his place is often referred to as a "substitute" soldier. During the American Civil War individuals who were drafted or conscripted into military service had the option to hire a substitute to serve in their place if they could afford it. These substitutes were typically individuals who were either unemployed or seeking financial gain. The practice of hiring substitutes was more prevalent among wealthier individuals who could afford to pay for someone else to take their place in the military.

The Elder family were pioneers in Tennessee. Some of the family settled in Hamilton County. This excerpt is copied from Chattanoogan dot com: "The children of Robert S. Elder included Samuel Houston Sarah Jane Minerva Jane Robert and James B. Sarah married Thomas Monger a Unionist who was on the County Court. Minerva married James Clifford Allen who fought for the Union and was in the Legislature from Bradley County. Samuel H. was on the Confederate side joining 2nd Co. K of the First CSA Cavalry on Sept. 23 1862. He married Sarah J. White. Their daughter Mary A. married Aaron E. Smith. Samuel H. and his brother Robert had a "store boat'' that made calls at the various river landings and they also had a general store at Snow Hill. Samuel H. was postmaster at Long Savannah. He died in 1910 of a heart attack while walking from Avondale to Snow Hill."

A record for Benjamin Franklin Cavendar from Hamilton County was found. However no mention of Confederates in Hamilton County for Thomas. Although a "Reader's Comment" from the Chattanoogan dot com states this: CAVENDER Benjamin Franklin Co. B 1TN Cav. Carter's Born 1839 in TN son of Henry Cavender. Farmer in Ooltewah. 1860 HC Census Reader Comment; Henry Cavender by his first wife did have a son named Benjamin S. Cavender b. ca. 1806 in NC living in Hamilton in 1850 but d. March 14 1858 in Dade Co. MO. By his 2nd wife Henry Cavender had a son named Franklin b. ca. 1839 in Hamilton Co. TN. However Henry Cavender relocated with several of his married and unmarried children after the 1860 census but prior to the War to Pitman Randolph Co. AR. In service with nephews in Company A of the 12th Missouri Infantry is Henry's son Francis Marion Cavender and an F.N.C. Cavender who I assume may be Henry's son Franklin. I cannot say for certain since there are no enlistment dates on this post but this Benjamin Cavender may be the son of Henry's son Thomas Cavender who remained in Hamilton Co. Thomas' son Benjamin J. Cavender was b. ca. 1844 in Hamilton Co. relocating after the War to Jeffersonville IN. I would be interested in hearing how the authors pegged this solder as Benjamin Franklin Cavender as Civil War soldiers database only lists him as Benjamin. I regret I cannot say anything more definitive than to cast some doubts. Kendall Sparkman.

According to a record found in familysearch dot org: Captain J. B. King mentioned in the document was an officer for for Company B of the 1st Regiment Tennessee Cavalry Carter's. This regiment was organized in November 1862 using the 3rd Tennessee Cavalry Battalion as its nucleus. This company was active in the Vicksburg Campaign and was captured July 1863. By exchanged it was attached to Waul's Texas Legion then returned to the regiment. It surrendered with the Army of Tennessee.1

The Caruthers individuals who attested this document were not found in a brief internet search. However there are other possible spellings of the name such as CARRUTHERS CARETHERS CAROTHERS. Some of the individuals named in the site Chattanoogan dot com were near the Chattanooga area during the Civil War. n/a unknown‎

‎The History of an Expedition Against Fort Du Quesne in 1755; under Major-General Edward Braddock . Edited from the Original Manuscripts by Winthrop Sargent‎

‎Philadelphia: Lippincott Grambo & Co 1855. First Edition. Engraved frontispiece 9 maps 8 folding and one vignette. 1 vols. 8vo. Original cloth. Beautiful copy. First Edition. Engraved frontispiece 9 maps 8 folding and one vignette. 1 vols. 8vo. Best account of the Braddock disaster in which half of his 1400 British troops and 63 of 89 officers were killed under the devastating fire from some 900 French Canadians and Indians hidden on either side of a heavily wooded ravine. With no experience of open fighting Braddock refused to heed the advice of the provincials to take the shelter of the trees and for over three hours the columns of redcoats presented easy targets for the enemy. Braddock himself was mortally wounded and tradition has it that on his deathbed he murmured "We shall better know how to deal with them another time." This account also issued as the first publication of the Pennyslvania Historical Society contains several journals of the expedition and other papers. Sargent's long introductory memoir "goes over the whole ground of the rival territorial claims of France and England and the whole narrative including that of the battle itself is given with care and judgment" Justin Winsor Narrative and Critical History of America V: 575. ‎(Civil War) Taney, Roger B‎

‎Decision of Chief Justice Taney in the case of Ex Parte John Merryman Applying for a Writ of Habeas Corpus‎

‎Philadelphia: John Campbell 1862. First Philadelphia edition. 16pp. 8vo. Disbound a bit brittle chip at fore-edge. First Philadelphia edition. 16pp. 8vo. In April 1861 with the Civil War erupting northern troops were rushed to Washington D.C. to protect the capital passing through Baltimore by rail. Although Maryland voted against secession at the end of April pro Southern sentiment abounded in the planter society and the state militia was used to try and prevent northern troops from passing through the state. The following month planter and militia Lieutenant John Merryman was arrested for treason and for advocating "armed hostility against the Government" for his role in destroying railroad bridges in the state being used to transport Union troops. Merryman's lawyers appealed to Justice Roger B. Taney the Supreme Court Justice who infamously decided the Dred Scott case by ruling that those of African ancestry could not claim citizenship in the United States who immediately issued a writ of habeas corpus. Guaranteed by the Suspension Clause of the Constitution habeas corpus protected citizens against unlawful arrests by allowing the court to bring prisoner's before the bench to determine whether their detention was indeed lawful.

General George Cadwalader the commander of the military district including Fort McHenry where Merryman was being held prisoner refused to abide with Taney's decision citing Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus. On May 28 in the present decision Taney stated from the bench in ex parte John Merryman that the President can neither suspend habeas corpus nor authorize a military officer to do it and that military officers cannot arrest a person not subject to the rules and articles of war except as ordered by the court. President Lincoln would refuse to comply with Taney's ruling continuing the suspension and the military arrests without congressional approval. The passage of the Habeas Corpus Suspension Act in March 1863 finally ended the controversy at least temporarily by authorizing presidential suspension of the writ during the Civil War.

Taney's decision widely seen as pro-Southern although based in sound legal precedent was first published separately in Baltimore in 1861 followed by a New Orleans printing and another in Jackson Mississippi. This Philadelphia edition would appear the following year. Sabin 48029 John Campbell unknown‎

‎(Civil War) Sherman, William T‎

‎Military Map Showing the Marches of the United States Forces Under the Command of Maj. Genl. William T. Sherman During the Years 1863 1864 1865‎

‎St. Louis: Printed by Joseph Gedney 1865. Inscribed by Sherman at the lower right "With compliments of W. T. Sherman Lt. Genl. Saint Louis MO September 21 1868. Large map drawn by Capt. William Kossak and John B. Muller under the direction of Maj. W. L. B. Jenney engraved by Evans and Courtenay. 33x51 inches sheet size. Military movements hand colored. Old folds repairs on verso along folds minor staining. Inscribed by Sherman at the lower right "With compliments of W. T. Sherman Lt. Genl. Saint Louis MO September 21 1868" Large map drawn by Capt. William Kossak and John B. Muller under the direction of Maj. W. L. B. Jenney engraved by Evans and Courtenay. 33x51 inches sheet size. Military movements hand colored. An impressively large map covering most of the southern theater of the Civil War extending from Washington D.C. in the northeast to Brunswick GA in the south and westward as far as Natchez Little Rock and St. Louis. The map is filled with remarkable detail including roads towns and villages rivers creeks and railroads. Compiled under the direction of Bvt. Maj. W.L.B. Jenney by order of General Sherman 13 different authorities are credited in its preparation.

A key to the hand coloring at the bottom reveals the true reason for the map i.e. to chart Sherman's taking of Atlanta and his infamous march to the sea: black lines show the route of the infantry yellow the pursuit of Hood red the 4th Army Corps green the 14th Army Corps and so on; Union fortifications are colored blue and Confederate in red; the routes of Wilson and Stoneman's cavalry corps are also separately delineated.

There are various versions of this map similarly titled but produced for different publishers and reasons. The most common includes the imprint of Ferd. Mayer Genl. Lith. of New York who printed the map for inclusion in Sherman's Memoirs New York 1875. Another version was produced at a reduced scale for inclusion in the Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies with the imprint of Julius Bien plate CXVII. Yet another includes the The American Photo-Lithographic Company of New York imprint at the lower right. The present version however with the St. Louis imprint of Joseph Gedney at the lower left would appear to have been separately published. Given the present version inscribed by Sherman it was perhaps produced on his behalf.

We have never encountered another of these maps inscribed and signed by Sherman. ‎New York: National Union Executive Committee 1864. Broadside illustrated with a map. 18-1/8x11-1/2 inches. Old folds. Broadside illustrated with a map. 18-1/8x11-1/2 inches. A cartographically illustrated broadside produced in support of Abraham Lincoln in the 1864 election against the claims of the Peace Democrats. The map depicts the southern states with the Confederate regions in black and the Union-held areas in gray. The text of the broadside which refutes the anti-Lincoln claims of the Copperheads concludes: "We have shown unmistakably who commenced the war. It must be apparent to all that the Government has thus far a decided and prepondering advantage. The end cannot be doubtful. ‎(Civil War) Davis, Jefferson‎

‎Inaugural Address of President Davis Delivered at the Capitol Monday February 18 1861 at 1 o'clock P.M.‎

‎Montgomery: Shorter & Reid 1861. First edition. 8pp. 8vo. Unbound. Minor staining. Early 20th century price annotations on upper corner of the title in ink and pencil. First edition. 8pp. 8vo. Once secession became a reality in late 1860 the rebellious states had to decide what form of government they would take. As in 1787 when the original thirteen states wove themselves into the United States through a constitution the South wove itself into a Confederacy by creating their own constitution. In early February 1861 representatives of the six seceded states Alabama Georgia Louisiana Mississippi South Carolina and Florida met in Montgomery to draft a provisional constitution and officially establish the Confederate States of America. The document would be unanimously ratified on February 8th and the following day Jefferson Davis would be unanimously elected to the provisional presidency of the Confederacy. Davis was not among the members of the convention however having returned to Mississippi from Washington after resigning his Senate seat. He immediately traveled to Montgomery delivering his inauguration address on February 18 the same day that the delegates signed the provisional constitution.

Delivered on the steps of the Capitol building Davis invoked the principles of the 1776 Declaration of Independence to justify the secession and independence of the southern states: "It illustrates the American idea that governments rest on the consent of the governed and that it is the right of the people to alter or abolish them at will whenever they become destructive of the ends for which they were established. The declared purpose of the compact of the Union from which we have withdrawn was to "establish justice insure domestic tranquillity provide for the common defense promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity;" and when in the judgment of the sovereign States composing this Confederacy it has been perverted from the purposes for which it was ordained and ceased to answer the ends for which it was established a peaceful appeal to the ballot box declared that so far as they are concerned the Government created by that compact should cease to exist."

His address continued by further linking the actions of the seceding states to the Founding Fathers noting that the provisional constitution they have drafted was in the spirit of the original: "We have changed the constituent parts but not the system of government. The Constitution framed by our fathers is that of these Confederate States. In their exposition of it and in the judicial construction it has received we have a light which reveals its true meaning."

He defended secession by arguing that their sole purpose is the protection of their social and economic system though does not mention the word slavery and "actuated solely by the desire to preserve our own rights and promote our own welfare the separation by the Confederate States has been marked by no aggression upon others and followed by no domestic convulsion."

Just a few weeks later on the steps of the Capitol in Washington Abraham Lincoln would deliver his own first inaugural address: "In your hands my dissatisfied fellow-countrymen and not in mine is the momentous issue of civil war . We are not enemies but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land will yet swell the chorus of the Union when again touched as surely they will be by the better angels of our nature."

While Lincoln's inaugural is quite common published as a government document the first separate printing of Davis's inaugural address although well represented institutionally is quite scarce on the market. Parrish & Willingham 895; Crandall 607; Sabin 15274 Shorter & Reid unknown‎
