War of 1812
An Address of Members of the House of Representatives of the Congress of the United States to their Constituents on the Subject of the War with Great Britain
Hudson and Goodwin 1812. Paperback. Very Good. Hartford Re-Printed by Hudson and Goodwin 1812. Softcover. Pages 3-6 loose. Tightly bound. Very minimal wear. Toning consistent with age. Text is clear and bright. Name of previous owner Daniel Dunbar penned on front wrapper. Daniel Dunbar was a lawyer that practiced law in Berlin Connecticut from 1804 until 1841.
Signed by thirty-four members of Congress this document is the counter-argument made by Congress against the war of 1812. One of the reasons addressed in the argument is the fact that the US has been very successful on exporting goods to England and Europe and by upsetting England the trade routes as well as a major purchaser of exported goods could close to the United States. Multiple printings of this document appeared in 1812 in several other cities.
HOWES A77 Hudson and Goodwin paperback

Over the course of his forty-seven-year career he commanded forces in the War of 1812 the Mexican-American War the Black Hawk War the Second Seminole War and briefly the American Civil War conceiving the Union strategy known as the Anaconda Plan that would be used to defeat the Confederacy. He served as Commanding General of the United States Army for twenty years longer than any other holder of the office. In 1835 Jackson sent him to fight the Seminole and Creeks in Florida but he was deprived of materials and moved slowly. Jackson removed him from command to face a board of inquiry. The board promptly exonerated him with praise for his "energy steadiness and ability. Washington D.C. : Printed by Gales and Seaton hardcover

[World War II]: [Pearl Harbor]
SPECIAL ATTACK FLOTILLA
Tokyo: Japan Times 1942. 8821pp. plus frontispiece and twenty- three pages of photographic plates. Half title. Quarto. Original green cloth boards and purple string ties front board gilt. Edges of boards sunned cloth fraying at corners foredge and upper portion of spine approximately half of the spine cloth lacking. Very faint dampstaining to outer corners throughout otherwise internally clean and bright. Contemporary ownership inscription on front pastedown. About very good overall. One of two editions of this very rare volume of Japanese propaganda curiously published in English at the height of the war in the Pacific. Subtitled BUSHIDO IN THE WAR OF GREATER EAST ASIA on the front board and half title it is a tribute to nine Japanese sailors who launched an undersea attack on the United States fleet at Pearl Harbor in a "Special Attack Flotilla" of two-man KO- HYOTEKI class miniature submarines. The sailors were treated as martyrs and the text waxes panegyric of the "deified heroes." The book includes a laudatory and detailed account of the "Battle of Hawaii" in which "the great task of annihilating the United States Pacific Fleet was.accomplished" biographies of each of the crew members illustrated with their portraits as well as images of their homes families and even schools the text of their final letters to their families proof that there was no expectation of survival from the start and an interview with the Chief of the Naval Press Section of the Imperial Headquarters by Japanese novelist Eiji Yoshikawa. The description of the battle assures readers that "The spirit of self-sacrifice and loyalty to His Majesty the Emperor and the State which animated Japan's fighting men and the temperament of American and British men and officers who regard the quest for a happier life as the aim and end of existence are as different as chalk from cheese" and the volume closes by advising that "the end of the War of Greater East Asia is still far off. In order to gain a final victory the present total war must be fought with unflagging energy to a finish and for this purpose the nation must form an even firmer resolution to gain complete mastery of all seas."

The activities of the KO-HYOTEKI were meant to be a closely guarded secret but one of the submersibles malfunctioned and was retrieved by American forces along with its officer Sakamaki Kazuo. He was the only one of the ten members of the Special Attack Flotilla to survive. While it is not clear why this work was published in English and the colophon printed only in Japanese warns that it is not for sale it seems possible that Sakamaki's capture made the Flotilla's actions more valuable as propaganda than as military intelligence. Notably Sakamaki is never referenced even obliquely by the text despite his submarine partner Inagaki who drowned trying to escape the vessel receiving full honors.

OCLC records five copies of this edition located at Stanford the Library of Congress the University of Hawaii at Manoa the Pritzker Military Library and the British Library. A 76-page edition with a different arrangement of illustrations is also recorded with copies only at the Hoover Institute and University of Wisconsin in the United States. A very rare and interesting English-language look at the early war in the Pacific from the Japanese point of view. OCLC 3530134 12420612. Japan Times hardcover

Civil War: Smart Edwin
REBEL RAID IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI. ATTACK UPON PATTERSON. FIGHT BETWEEN 1500 OF THE ENEMY AND 400 FEDERALS. THE LATTER FALL BACK TO BIG CREEK. INTERESTING DISPATCH FROM PILOT KNOB. MAJOR McCONNELL REPORTED MORTALLY WOUNDED AND A PRISONER. THE INCURSION AT AN END caption title
N.p. but likely St. Louis 1863. Broadside 13 3/4 x 4 1/4 inches. Remnants of tape at top edge and ink mark in top margin. Slight tanning and spotting old folds. Very good. A rare Civil War broadside recounting Confederate General John S. Marmaduke's second raid into Missouri. It gives detailed news of battles between Union and Confederate troops in southeast Missouri an area that saw bloody battles between Unionists and Bushwhackers throughout the Civil War.

Marmaduke aided by other Confederate units led by Joseph O. Shelby and Sterling Price and others attempted to lay claim to Missouri in 1861; they were unsuccessful but did not acknowledge defeat. Marmaduke planned his return for spring of 1863 confident that secessionist-minded Missourians would rally to his banner and he could make a decisive move on Jefferson City and even St. Louis. He needed the help: at the beginning of the raid Marmaduke had about 5000 troops of which 1200 were unarmed and 900 were unmounted and he hoped to resupply at Patterson and Bloomfield. He divided his forces and sent 2000 against Patterson the furthest south in a string of fortified outposts in southeastern Missouri. Marmaduke's troops had the element of surprise initially approaching Patterson and its small garrison of about 400 troops commanded by Col. Edwin Smart. Marmaduke's men captured Smart's pickets but revealed themselves soon after as over-eager artillery troops started firing before the infantry could get into place. Smart sent out a battalion under Major Wood to hold off the Confederates while he prepared his troops and supply trains for retreat.

In the text of this broadside Smart reports that Wood "held them in check and skirmished them into town. Before I left the town I destroyed what stores I could not bring away. Nothing fell into the hands of the enemy." Marmaduke pursued them to Big Creek about eight miles west of Patterson and Smart writes: "The engagement was severe in the extreme often fighting hand to hand. At Big Creek they got in my front and attempted to cut off my retreat but I forced my way and formed on this side of the Creek. The enemy did not renew the engagement." Smart lost about fifty troops including Major McConnell. Marmaduke failed to obtain any military stores at Patterson or during his subsequent raid at Bloomfield and no sympathetic Missourians joined his cause; the raid was a failure and confirmed that while Missouri was no Union stronghold neither was it interested in furthering the Confederate cause.

This broadside bears no imprint and the place of printing is unknown but the tone of the text and the fact that the news arrived so quickly indicates that it might have been printed in St. Louis. No copies of this broadside are listed in OCLC. Such broadsides bearing news of the Civil War in the Trans-Mississippi West are rare and shine an important spotlight on an often- neglected aspect of Civil War history. unknown
