This relatively scarce facsimile reprint was published circa 1962 as part of the centennial commemoration of the battle at Williamsburg but neither date nor publisher is noted. The author was a field officer in the 24th Virginia Regiment which suffered 189 casualties among its 740 men during the battle. Letter is part of a two part offering that includes a signed copy of the Danvers MA Historical Collection Vol. II signed by Captain Comey. Comey wrote an article entitled "General Grenville M. Dodge Danvers' Most Distinguished Living Son". The article follows the career of Dodge who was a General under General Sherman in the Civil War and then went on to design the route and build the Transcontinental Railroad. Dodge is confirming the information that Comey was to include in the article and also sent a donation of $100 to the Historical Society. Letter has handwritten note by Gen. Dodge in corner about the donation. There are two ink spots on letter and creases from being folded and placed in the book. The stationary for the letter has Baldwin Block Council Bluffs Iowa where General Dodge moved after completing the Transcontiential Railroad. Under Sherman General Dodge as an engineer built and rebuilt many roads and bridges to enable Sherman and his troops to move rapidly to the front lines. New York: Harper's Weekly 1862. Original printing of Homer's most sought-after Civil War wood engraving. Image: 9 1/8 inches by 13 3/4 inches; Sheet: 10 1/2 x 15 3/8 inches. This first only impression was printed in Harper's Weekly November 15 1862. Because of the development of more accurate telescopic rifles The American Civil War saw a much greater use of sharpshooters; it is likely that Homer had occasion to see one in action during the weeks he spent sketching scenes on the battlefront. The wood engraving Homer produced was almost an exact copy of his painting of the same subject. The most notable change he made in the engraving was the inclusion of a flask hanging from a branch--something that does not appear in the painting. Both the woodblock and the electrotype plate were destroyed after the engraving was printed. This is a very good impression in very good condition. Margins slightly trimmed. First Edition. <p>Washington DC: Unpublished 1845. Undated letter handwritten and SIGNED by Major Samuel Cooper to John Holmes Offley with Offley's reply dated 31 January 1845 on the verso. Cooper was one of the few Northern West Point graduates who resigned to join the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Immediately appointed Brigadier General later full general he became Adjutant & Inspector General CSA and was the senior ranking officer in the CSA throughout the Civil War. He accompanied Jefferson Davis when he fled Richmond at the end of the war. But he also preserved the official CSA records and turned them over to Federal authorities; they became part of the Official Records published in the early 1890s. John Holmes Offley was the Chief Clerk of the United States War Department. He was married to Catherine Van Rennselaer Heaton the daughter of Samuel Cooper's sister Jane Cooper Heaton. The text of the letter concerns more than $400 to be paid to Catherine and her siblings from the pension of Cooper's father. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1837. In 1861 he was promoted to the rank of colonel and appointed chief of staff to Lieutenant General Winfield Scott. Townsend became assistant adjutant general of the army and served in that position until the end of the war. He was brevetted brigadier general in September 1864 and major general in March 1865 for ""meritorious faithful and distinguished services in the adjutant generals department during the rebellion.""During the war Townsend was the principal executive officer of the War Department and was more intimate with Abraham Lincoln and Secretary Stanton than any other military official. He originated the plan of a U.S. military prison and established the prison at Fort Leavenworth Kansas. Townsend was appointed Adjutant General of the U.S. Army in 1869 and served in that capacity until he retired in 1880. unknown

Articles touch upon such issues as an Inter-Allied track meet an original musical featuring five original tunes "You're On Your Way" the start of a Berlin-based G.I. football season and updates on the Major League Baseball pennant race. As of March 2023 no copies found in retail or auction records and one holding listed in OCLC at Wisconsin Historical Society. Very Good. [Fashion] [World War II] Gladys Warren
Archive of Original Pencil Drawings and Watercolors 1941-1945
England 1941. Very Good. Substantial collection of original amateur artwork and fashion plates dated 1941 to 1945 by a young woman named Gladys Warren almost all pieces signed "G. Warren" "G.W." or "Gladys Warren". The collection consists of nine large format watercolors 56x38cm.; one small format watercolor 32.5x23; four large format pencil sketches 56x38cm.; and twelve small format pencil sketches 33.5x19cm. totaling twenty-six 26 individual pieces. Some dust soil and minor wear from handling watercolors not examined out of individual shrink wrap. A Very Good or better collection overall.<br /> <br /> Collection of drawings and watercolors almost exclusively depicting women in the latest fashions or in uniform. The range of the large format watercolors indicate that this was possibly a burgeoning professional dossier including examples of day wear sleep wear evening wear and swim wear. The large format pencil drawings include two historic fashion illustrations the only titled image in the group is "Madeira 1884" and one nude study. <br /> <br /> Of special note however is the series of twelve small pencil sketches all accomplished on the versos of what appear to be mimeographed World War II aircraft maintenance reports. Indeed the October 28 1941 "London Gazette" lists a Gladys Florence Warren among the members of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force WAAF though we find little else to pinpoint the artist. With the dearth of ready paper experienced during World War II perhaps Warren filched these leaves on which to practice her art Most of these sketches depict attractive women either seen in close-up or as usual modeling the latest uniforms and fashions while the verso details the assemblage or maintenance of engine covers handbrakes or a "carburettor." <br /> <br /> A pleasing survival of the English home front juxtaposing fashion femininity and aircraft mechanics. unknown
