‎GEORGIA; WORLD WAR I - BAXTER, W‎

‎In Batoum 1918-19.‎

‎Tbilisi: no stated publisher February 1919. First edition of this rare book of satirical sketches showing British forces and the locals during the occupation of Batumi an oft-overlooked conflict in the final year of the war. There are cartoons of Gurkhas Chinese Punjabis Turks and Cossacks reflecting the wide diversity of people involved in the conflict. We have traced only two other copies at the Imperial War Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. Batumi the capital of the region of Adjara in southwest Georgia changed hands multiple times in the immediate aftermath of the First World War. First it was controlled by the Russian Empire until the October Revolution where the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk transferred the region to the Ottomans. However the Transcaucasian Federation opposed this deal and Ottoman forces proceeded to invade in April 1918. After the defeat of the Ottoman empire in the First World War 3000 men from one British and two Indian battalions part of the Army of the Black Sea were sent to supervise their withdrawal in December 1918. The 1st Battalion Cameron Highlanders were present in this conflict as part of the 27th Division and the large number of Scottish soldiers pictured in these cartoons indicate that perhaps Baxley was one of them. The region was eventually ceded to the newly independent state of Georgia in 1920. The loosely inserted photographs show a cafe in Batumi the Bosporus a farewell party among soldiers of the Royal Flying Corps the British Army HQ in a bombed-out street and the locals. Octavo. Cartoon illustrations printed on recto of 14 leaves. With 10 loosely inserted gelatin silver prints approximately 85 x 118 mm 3 captioned in pencil on verso 3 numbered in pencil on verso. Original brown paper wrappers wire-stitched as issued front wrapper lettered and decorated in black. Wrappers chipped and loose at lower staple spine separated but holding contents browned; photographs a little bowed and silvered: a very good copy. Rowell & Wye 217. unknown‎

‎WORLD WAR I; MEDICAL‎

‎A photo album recording the First British Red Cross Serbian Mission during the First World War.‎

‎Various places: c. 1915. We had seen the awful need. and we were itching to begin An interesting record of British involvement in the south-eastern front with photographs captured in the field. The British Red Cross arrived in Uskub now Skopje in North Macedonia in 1914 and spent the following year treating the wounded and typhus sufferers. The photographs show their journey the hospitals doctors and patients and the local scenery. The Serbian Campaign was ignited in July 1914 when Austria-Hungary invaded the kingdom. They were defeated by the Serbs in August considered the first Allied victory of the war. In October 1914 six doctors and twelve St John's Ambulance orderlies were sent to the front line equipped with supplies for a field hospital. Arriving at the front line via Malta and Greece they were instructed to take charge of four full hospitals in Uskub. Despite the great logistical challenge they kept the wards functioning and eventually opened a dedicated typhus hospital before returning in 1915. This mission was recounted by one of the doctors James Johnston Abraham in his 1921 autobiography My Balkan Log. Plates IV VI XIV and XV were produced from photographs in this album and as Abrahams mentions bringing a camera on Page 130 perhaps the album was compiled by him. A number of images show the hospitals and their doctors treating wounded and infected soldiers. Five of the six doctors Abraham Banks Benbow Higginson and Kadish are pictured and identified in the captions as are many of the orderlies interpreters and house staff. It opens with images of Malta Athens and aboard the SS Caucase in stark contrast to the rest of the album filled with shots of the wards patients being bandaged and the graves of typhus victims. There are also many photographs of village life and of the Austrian prisoners of war who worked on the wards. Oblong quarto. With 66 gelatin silver photographs approximately 86 x 137 mm mounted landscape and portrait on recto of 45 leaves 5 blank manuscript captions in white ink. Original grey-green cloth front board lettered in gilt rear board stamped with double-fillet border in blind. Minor silvering of photographs otherwise bright a few marks on mounts binding a little rubbed at extremities: a very well-preserved example. hardcover‎

‎WORLD WAR I - EDWARDS, George Maitland‎

‎A copy typescript diary recounting his tour of the Russian front line before and during the June Offensive.‎

‎Mogilev: c.1917. The final Russian offensive of the war A firsthand account of this pivotal moment in the war written by Lieutenant-Colonel George Maitland Edwards while he was staff officer and Russian translator to General Charles St Leger Barter. Edwards recounts his displeasure with the Russian army and its poor discipline. The only other copy we have traced is held by the IWM although theirs is only 65 pages long and we have been unable to trace a published edition. Edwards 1882-1946 first went to Russia in the pre-war period where he worked in mining in Siberia and the Urals. In 1914 he joined the Royal Artillery and served in France and Gallipoli in charge of 254 Tunnelling Company. In 1917 he was sent to Russia with General Barter British Military Representative to the Headquarters of the Russian Armies in the Field to inspect the state of the front line. Edwards recounts multiple instances of poor discipline among Russian troops such as on 1 July when Russian soldiers dove into the German trenches "like rabbits" p. 17 instead of continuing on. He recalls his shock at the lack of communication between artillery and infantry as well as his bemusement at an attempt to fight off German planes in Bac u he described as "the very poorest shooting at aeroplanes I have ever witnessed" p. 49. He attributes this to poor leadership and Kerensky's abolition of the death penalty. Nevertheless he compliments the actions of the 8th Army despite being disheartened by the overall failure of the offensive. The work also includes a gelatin silver photograph of a British general relaxing with Russian troops. We have been unable to trace a published edition of this account. Folio 326 x 199 mm ff. 71. Carbon copy typescript on rectos only occasional contemporary typescript corrections sepia gelatin silver photograph 40 x 58 mm mounted on verso of p. 14. Recent red quarter leatherette spine gilt-lettered direct low bands ruled in gilt red cloth boards top edge gilt others untrimmed. Boards a little soiled and marked extremities slightly rubbed contents bright with minor foxing to endpapers first leaf chipped at foot in gutter: a very good example. hardcover‎

‎WORLD WAR I‎

‎A secret memorandum reporting on damage sustained by shipping.‎

‎London: 25 July 1917. The devastating impact of submarines A typescript copy marked "secret" of a report from the director of statistics Lieutenant Colonel J. G. Beharrell to the first lord of the admiralty Eric Geddes. It was drafted during a period of increased fear of submarines and gives detailed statistics on annual losses of merchant ships fishing vessels and foreign ships. Much of this information is difficult to find compiled elsewhere. After the international outrage at the sinking of the Lusitania and the Arabic in 1915 the German Admiralty chose to suspend submarine attacks on passenger and neutral vessels. However in 1917 Admiral Henning von Holtzendorff successfully petitioned for a resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare in a last-ditch attempt to starve Britain. This led to a heightened sense of fear on the seas and eventually to the entry of America into the war. The report is split into two sections: Beharrell's letter to Geddes and the accompanying tables of data. Beharrell writes in his opening paragraphs that 1501 merchant vessels had been lost to date with a gross tonnage of 4698324 representing 26.1 per cent of the British pre-war sea-going capability. He then explains each table. First are four tables of annual losses for different types of vessels with estimated rates of annual loss. It is clear to see the growing impact of submarine warfare as the fighting progressed for example where 135 merchant ships were sunk by submarines in 1915 that number climbed to 950 in 1917. The following tables give data on mercantile shipping numbers accounting for losses and new constructions the overall effect on British tonnage the effects on overseas trade the number of ships escaping submarine attacks comparative losses on a monthly basis and the number of submarines reported as sunk. Folio 340 x 220 mm typescript in red and black on recto only of 20 leaves threaded with treasury tags into 2 groupings 5 and 15 leaves all in paper wrappers and tied with string through hole black typescript on front wrapper purple "SECRET" stamps throughout. Leaves a little soiled as expected rust stains around treasury tags fore edges of some leaves worn touching edge of text: a very good example. unknown‎

‎WORLD WAR I‎

‎Manuscript course notes on wartime engineering taken at the Pioneer School of Instruction.‎

‎Reading: 1918. A brightly illustrated set of lecture notes taken by Lieutenant James Smith Richardson in 1918 with his name inscribed in pencil on the title page. Richardson served as an engineering officer with the 2/8th Battalion Royal Scots then transferred to the 2/5th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers. His notes cover topics ranging from trench digging to rail line construction and laying barbed wire. By the end of 1914 the rapid construction of trenches camps and railways was straining the capacity of the Royal Engineers. To solve this problem the War Office ordered the creation of a "pioneer battalion" for each division of the New Armies who were given training in entrenching road construction demolition and railway maintenance. Alongside meticulously detailed notes this notebook includes mathematical equations and skilled drawings including a double-page spread of a trench network. At the end of each module Richardson's notes were marked in pencil or stamped in red by an instructing officer at the Pioneer School in Reading. One of these stamps is dated 30 January 1918. The 8th Battalion Royal Scots joined the 51st Highland Division as its pioneer battalion in 1915 and fought with them from the Somme through to Cambrai. Small quarto manuscript mostly on recto of 84 leaves remainder blank. Hand-coloured drawings diagrams and tables throughout; four tipped-in handouts. Original blue diapered cloth refillable wrappers metal binder. Title page inscribed in red pencil "To be Completed". Spine toned extremities rubbed black ink stain to front wrapper binder a little rusted small closed tear to title page at head contents bright: a very good example. hardcover‎

‎[Michigan – Euro-American Immigration – 1834 Dutch Reformed Church Split – Civil War] Verplanke, Joos‎

‎Autobiography of Joos Verplanke Spring Lake Michigan Written during Winter of 1921‎

‎Spring Lake Michigan 1921. Twelve 8 ½ x 11 inch pages affixed to backing sheet. Wear marginal damage and some tearing to backing sheet; pages folded with some wrinkling; excellent. Joos Verplanke 1844–1943 was born in Zeeland The Netherlands and immigrated with his family to the United States in 1849. They settled in Holland Michigan and besides his time serving in the Union Army Verplanke would live in the Ottawa County area for the rest of his life. Offered here is a short memoir written by Verplanke for his children in 1921 when he was in his late 70s.<br /> <br /> The Verplanke family came to the US as part of the wave of immigration that followed the Dutch Reformed Church secession and the economic downturn in The Netherlands in the 1830s. Some Seceder church leaders such as Albertus Van Raalte felt that they were being religiously persecuted by the government and that staying in The Netherlands was religiously and economically untenable for their congregants.1 By the mid-1840s several Seceder ministers had formed emigration societies to help their parishioners leave for the US. As Verplanke puts it “They went in order to live where they could be free in religious matters as they had not been entirely free in the Netherlands during the thirties.â€<br /> <br /> Joos Verplanke and his family left Biervliet Zeeland in 1849 to join the Dutch colony in what would become Holland Michigan—but they and others in their party ran out of funds by Albany. The group was sent to “the Poor Houseâ€; many including Verplanke’s mother and younger brother died from cholera and the group was forced to leave. Arriving in Grand Haven Michigan they were assisted by a farmer who had also immigrated from The Netherlands a few years prior. The farmer fed and housed the family and eventually raised funds for them to continue to Holland. In fact this ethos was important to the Dutch immigrants; some Seceder emigration societies had provisions that money would be pooled so that the richer immigrants could help the poorer reach the colony.1<br /> <br /> The Verplankes arrived destitute in Holland. Joos Verplanke describes the colony:<br /> <br /> “Holland was a very new colony practically in the woods with a few stores a few small houses. The Government land was taken up by these colonists. Rev. VanDerMeulen had settled in Zeeland. Rev. Ypma im Vriesland Rev. Bolks in Overisel and others in Graafscap; each in his colony. A few of the immigrants had money but most had just enough to get them here. It was very hard for them in this wild timbered country so different from the cultivated and thickly settled Netherlands. None of them had ever handled an axe. . However encouraged by their ministers they were determined to learn to use the axe and chop out a place where they could worship God as they wished which they had not been allowed to do in the Netherlands some time before.â€<br /> <br /> In 1862 Verplanke enlisted with the Union Army. He recalls training:<br /> <br /> “We were in Holland two weeks training. Had a jolly time everyone was good to us. We could have anything we wanted. All the beer we wanted to as there was no prohibition those days.â€<br /> <br /> He recalls the unit fighting Morgan’s raiders at “Tip’s Bend†Tebbs Bend Kentucky fighting in Knoxville and with Sherman on his March to the Sea. He also recalls his short-lived desertion from the steamer Matanzas in Washington:<br /> <br /> “So crowded was the boat that there was no room to lie down not even on the upper deck. I thought if I can get off I will not go with this boat. I talked to a few of the boys and they agreed with me. Just then the gang planks were hauled in so we could not sneak off that way. I looked over and noticed along the boat’s side the whale-fenders were hanging by ropes. We threw our knapsacks and slide sic down the ropes. . The next morning we went to headquarters and I told some kind of a story about getting left. . Though we had been booked as deserters there was nothing more said of it. So we remembered only the fun we had out of what might have proved to be a very bad venture.â€<br /> <br /> Verplanke mustered out in June of 1865. He became the town marshall in Holland and in 1876 successfully ran as a Democrat for Ottawa County Sheriff despite the county’s Republican lean. He ran again two years later as a Greenback. The Greenback Party was an agrarian anti-monopoly and pro- monetary and labor reform party but Verplanke frames his running as a Greenback as a practical decision: “I knew if I accepted the Greenback nomination I was almost certain of victory. . I needed it badly as I had spent so much money in electioneering†for the previous election.<br /> Verplanke farmed in Crockery Township and then moved to Spring Lake where he authored this document for the benefit of his nine living sons.<br /> <br /> Of interest to scholars of the Dutch settlement of Michigan following the Dutch Reformed Church split and those immigrants’ participation in the Civil War and American political life.<br /> <br /> 1 Robert P. ‎WORLD WAR II - PHOTO-RECONNAISSANCE‎

‎Officially compiled presentation album of over 150 original aerial reconnaissance and air-raid photographs.‎

‎London: Royal Air Force 1942. A turning point in the air war from the air A high-quality comprehensively captioned album likely prepared in early 1942 for high-level review documenting RAF bombing and reconnaissance operations from May to December 1941 - the pivotal months in which the Luftwaffe lost the initiative and the RAF began to strike deep into Axis territory. The photographs cover Western and Central Europe North Africa and the Middle East recording attacks on major cities and strategic targets - including Berlin Cologne Hamburg naval and military bases factories and infrastructure - together with a stark reconnaissance view of Dachau and two large photo-mosaics of Persian oil facilities. The album demonstrates the breadth of the RAF's offensive and intelligence-gathering capability at the moment when its position in the air was rapidly strengthening. The accompanying commentary situates these operations in the critical pre-American phase of the air war when Britain and its Commonwealth allies faced the Luftwaffe alone. Despite Germany's early technical and tactical superiority - honed through clandestine rearmament the Spanish Civil War and a substantial training programme - its advantages eroded through strategic miscalculations: the failure to win the Battle of Britain the ineffectual Blitz and the diversion of resources to the Russian front. By late 1941 the RAF with improved materiel and better-trained crews was able to conduct long-range raids and detailed reconnaissance deep into increasingly thinly defended airspace. The album's index singles out 13 photographs as exemplary though the technical precision throughout renders such distinctions narrow. Particularly striking sequences include low-level obliques around Flushing analysing camouflage on local defences; large-scale "dicing" images at Étaples revealing dummy gun positions and trench systems; night photographs of Berlin and Kassel illuminated by flak searchlights and incendiaries; daylight images of Blenheim attacks on Cologne power stations some framed by the photographing aircraft; and a sequence tracking the movements of the Admiral Scheer from Denmark to Swinemünde. Two photographs of the December 1941 Halifax bomber raid on Gneisenau Scharnhorst and Prinz Eugen at Brest taken seconds apart show the attack unfolding with exceptional immediacy. The album concludes with the first photographic coverage of Iceland nine images illustrating its striking terrain. A full list of images is available on request. Landscape folio 300 x 380 mm 4 pp. indexes by place and subject full-page mounted photo-reproduced "Sketch-map shewing Locations of Places" 159 silver gelatin original photographs mounted either side of 51 leaves of pale green light card stock formats ranging between 260 x 325 mm and 90 x 135 mm the majority between these at around 200 x 170 mm all with meticulous typescript captions logging date location and the nature of the operation with detailed interpretation of the image Original black pebble-grain morocco-finish roan lettered "VOL I" in gilt on the spine with gilt ruled compartments concentric panels in blind to covers strong blue on very light greenish blue hammer finish endpapers dark olive green linen hinges. Binding a little rubbed some light abrasions and scratches to covers some inevitable scuffing at the extremities; text pages lightly toned as also the mounting leaves but just marginally so and with occasional light soiling binding a little open between a few leaves but sound the photographs themselves remain pin-sharp and dark retaining excellent definition and tone; very good. unknown‎

‎AFGHANISTAN - SECOND ANGLO-AFGHAN WAR‎

‎Substantial dossier of government papers from the archive of Reginald Baliol Brett private secretary to the secretary of state for India including the manuscript draft of General Gordon's suppressed letter on the withdrawal from Kandahar.‎

‎London & Simla: 1878-82. Confidential India Office archive revealing British decision-making in the final phase of the Second Anglo-Afghan War An exceptional archive of confidential India Office and Government of India papers this collection offers an unusually detailed view of the diplomatic and bureaucratic manoeuvring that accompanied the final stages of the Second Anglo-Afghan War and the negotiation of Britain's withdrawal. Bringing together Foreign Department memoranda from Simla Cabinet papers printed at the Foreign Office and India Office material that seldom survives outside official files it reconstructs policy formation across two administrations and two continents. Running through the papers is the early career of Reginald Baliol Brett later 2nd Viscount Esher who became private secretary to Lord Hartington in 1878. As Hartington and the new Liberal government sought to reverse Lord Lytton's "forward" policy and disengage from Afghanistan the India Office and the Government of India frequently disagreed over strategy intelligence and the limits of influence. The archive captures these tensions vividly and shows Brett learning to operate as an assertive intermediary whose probing questionnaires marginalia and attempts to synthesize rival views already marked him out as a rising - and at times unsettling - force within the department. The documentary foundation of the dossier lies in A. W. Moore's two major surveys of Afghan affairs annotated by Brett and widely regarded as the most authoritative India Office narratives of the conflict. These are complemented by a sequence of extremely restricted Simla-printed papers and a run of Cabinet memoranda from Thomas Harrison's private press together charting the shift from aggressive frontier ambition to the more pragmatic Liberal policy of withdrawal and the recognition of Abdur Rahman as Amir. High-level submissions by Hartington Ripon and Evelyn Baring illuminate the arguments over the retention of Kandahar and Pishin while the "Aide-Mémoire" on negotiations with Abdur Rahman documents the decisive recalibration of British aims. Other materials probe the immediate crises of the war: memoranda assessing Yakub Khan's responsibility for the Kabul Residency attack; correspondence among Griffin Stewart and Lyall on the deteriorating northern situation; and the substantial "Very Confidential" dossier of Russian correspondence between General von Kaufmann and Shere Ali which exposes the diplomatic pressures of the "Great Game". Operational detail appears in the viceroy's secret telegrams of early 1880 field reports from Kandahar and Kabul Wilson's military sketch of the campaign and manuscript troop returns. Among the most revealing personal items is General Charles Gordon's autograph draft of a letter to The Times opposing the retention of Kandahar heavily revised and ultimately suppressed by Brett who feared it would damage Gordon's standing. His decision and later grief at Gordon's death lend an unexpected human dimension to a collection otherwise dominated by official policy and statecraft. Only a handful of the documents can be traced in institutional collections and few survive in private hands. Gathered here in a coherent sequence with close associations they provide a rare high-resolution record of how British officials interpreted the war navigated clashing doctrines and personalities and ultimately engineered their exit from Afghanistan. A full list of the contents is available on request. Folio 339 x 215 mm comprising 37 printed and manuscript items: full listing with titles paginations and outline content given in the note. Contemporary light olive brown diagonal zigzag-grain cloth boards rebacked and cornered in brownish orange morocco in the mid-20th century red morocco label original moderate bluish green endpapers retained matching linen hinges. Esher armorial bookplate. Cloth starting to lift a little from the edges of spine; contents variably browned margins a little fragile in places with a few consequent chips and splits one title page torn across and neatly repaired with archival tape: overall very good. ‎ANGLO-ZULU WAR - ELLIOT, Fitzwilliam‎

‎Important collection of letters and documents concerning his service in the Anglo-Zulu war.‎

‎Onboard ship and in southern Africa: 1879. I should not like to say how many kraals we burnt … Such warfare is not very glorious This substantial archive of largely unpublished correspondence - around 21000 words written in the field - offers a vivid and unusually frank primary source for the Zulu War only partially treated in existing historiography. Captain Fitzwilliam Elliot youngest son of the 3rd Earl of Minto and a perceptive officer on special service writes with sharp intelligence admiration for the Zulu and unguarded criticism of British command. Addressed to his mother the well-read and formidable Nina Countess of Minto the letters track his movements from the aftermath of Isandlwana to the campaign's close often with acute reflections on strategy discipline and morale. Elliot sailed shortly after the disasters of early 1879 joining General Crealock's coastal column. He denounces the confused state of operations deplores the "sensational" reporting of the Prince Imperial's death and is consistently scathing of Crealock as "an old woman" and Chelmsford for the "feebleness" of his reports. His march from Durban to Fort Chelmsford and northwards is marked by slow progress foul weather and disorganization. He gives sharp portraits of officers and units praising the veteran 57th and dismissing the 88th as "a real rowdy lot of Irishmen … but good to fight friend or foe". He describes kraal raids with discomfort acknowledging the logic of destroying Zulu resources while feeling "rather a scoundrel" at the spectacle of looted food and driven captives. Yet his admiration for the Zulu is striking: "they are always so thoroughly manly … never appearing angry nor even humiliated at the loss of homes cattle women every thing indeed which they possess". He reports the VC ceremony for Rorke's Drift doubting the award to Chard and remarks acidly that Colonel Pearson lionized at home after the siege of Eshowe is regarded in the field as "one of the greatest muffs this war has produced". His final letters follow the victory at Ulundi where the "streams are now full of dead Zulus" a scene he describes with evident distress and sanitary alarm. On 12 August he writes from Ulundi to wish his family good sport on the Glorious Twelfth and the next day notes departure "for a dart after Cetewayo better game than grouse". The archive is accompanied by cartes-de-visite of Elliot his parents and John Dunn; Elliot's commission as captain; and his 1867 record of services. 14 autograph letters signed 11 retaining envelopes pale blue paper generally 200 x 125 mm written largely in pencil but also in ink; Record of Services printed on pale blue paper with envelope; commission dated 29 October 1878; 5 carte de visite 2 of the young Elliot in uniform one each of his parents one of John Robert Dunn. Some tears to envelopes otherwise well preserved. John Buchan Lord Minto: A Memoir 1924. unknown‎
