The Work of the Royal Engineers in the European War 1914-19. Military Mining.
Chatham: W. & J. Mackay & Co. 1922. First edition the copy of the military historian Major Archibald Frank Becke. Attached to the Historical Section Military Branch of the Committee of Imperial Defence Becke was a major contributor to the British official history of the First World War. For the History of the Great War Based on Official Documents Becke 1871-1974 compiled the six order of battle volumes and contributed maps and sketches research and writing to other volumes Falls praising Becke's cartography and drawings as "probably superior to anything of their kind in previous military histories." During the conflict he served with the Royal Field Artillery. His bookplate and July 1924 ownership inscription are on the front pastedown. Illustrated with dozens of plans and photographic plates the three sections in this work concern the history of military mining its technical aspects and procedures used for rescue operations. Octavo. With 13 plates 57 plans and diagrams 30 folding. Original blue cloth spine and front cover gilt yellow coated endpapers. A little contemporary pencil sidelining pencilled notes perhaps Becke's on rear free endpaper verso. Spine and head of boards sunned content clean: near-fine. Not in Wells. No stated place or publisher: after 1916. Gallantly led by Vice Admiral Sir David Beatty First edition profusely illustrated with shots taken at sea. It shows the battles of Dogger Bank and Jutland the damage done to ships such as HMS Lion and "the final moments of HMS Invincible" McCartney p. 116 before her destruction. We have traced only four institutional copies: the National Library of Scotland the universities of Leeds and Cambridge and the National Maritime Museum. The Battle Cruiser Fleet was formed in February 1915 after the Battle of Dogger Bank proved the effectiveness of this type of ship. It was commanded by Vice Admiral Beatty here photographed with his commodores and captains on page 16 and saw service most famously at the Battle of Jutland. Some of the illustrations in this volume show battles fought before the BCF was inaugurated such as Dogger Bank the Falklands and Heligoland Blight. The main focus is HMS Lion but HMS Southampton Invincible Indefatigable and Princess Royal also make regular appearances. Oblong folio. Half-tone photographic illustrations throughout. Original blue cloth over bevelled boards front board lettered and bordered in gilt yellow patterned endpapers. Binding rubbed especially at spine ends a couple of superficial scratches and scattered marks small split at spine head a few closed tears at edges sometime repaired with tape occasional minor foxing or finger-soiling: a very good copy. Intel from Operation Paperclip Classified as RESTRICTED this rare detailed study collates the latest intelligence gathered on the rocket drive for the Me163 the assisted take off ATO units for several conventional aircraft and the rockets for the Henschel Hs293 and Hs117 radio-guided bombs the Blohm and Voss BV143 rocket-assisted glide bomb and the Enzian - a name familiar to devotees of Thomas Pynchon - a surface-to-air antiaircraft missile. Scarce with just a single copy traced at the National Aerospace Library Farnborough. CIOS was established from SHAEF's G-2 Intelligence Division as part of Operation Paperclip it was tasked with seeking out and assessing caches of scientific and technological secrets hidden test sites and underground factories with the aim of co-opting Nazi German weapon technologies for the coming Cold War with the Soviet Union. The author a chemical engineering graduate from Texas Tech was a member of the US Navy's Naval Technical Mission in Europe activated in January 1945 to assist in this task. Stiff had been working on jet propulsion with the navy's Bureau of Aeronautics since 1941 and after the war he continued in rocketry becoming an executive for the Aerojet Engineering Corporation responsible for the engines for the Titan Gemini Viking and Voyager projects and for the main engine on the Apollo Command Service Module. This copy numbered 150 of an unstated edition was sent to the MSL in Maribyrnong Victoria Australia established in 1922 to assist commercial munitions producers in overcoming any technical difficulties arising and to ensure conformity of specifications. National Aerospace Library only on Library Hub and WorldCat copy in the Imperial War Museum LBY 15 / 696. Wire-stitched in the original buff printed card wrappers. 28 plates paginated in the text 2 of them folding power unit schematics tables to the text. Reproduced typescript. Probably Britain: c.1942-43. Pop-up anti-Nazi propaganda in Arabic A rare example of anti-Hitler propaganda in Arabic produced likely in Britain during the North Africa campaign. We have traced no other copies or any other examples of Arabic pop-up satire from the Second World War. As the Arabic text displays grammatical features typical of the Tunisian colloquial this pop-up was likely produced for the Tunisian campaign of 1942-43. The opening scene shows Hitler stealing food and wine from a family's dinner table while in the pop-up scene he handles the loot to a German soldier who is walking out of a house. The text at rear denounces how the German "locusts" and their leader "the pig Hitler" - a phrase used in contemporary anti-Nazi European satire here acquiring additional overtones within a Muslim context - stole food from all the countries they crossed to feed themselves while letting the local people starve. It concludes stating that this is how the new system works: everything is carried out for the sole benefit of the Germans. Oblong octavo folds into 100 x 150 mm. Paper engineered "pop-up" propaganda card Arabic title on the front and Arabic text on the back. Extremities a little rubbed and dust-soiled very slight foxing: a very good example. unknown

Desert Rats Days with the 8th Army": Photograph album chronicling service with the Middle East Interpretation Unit 285 Air Reconnaissance Wing. Compiled by W. A. Fuller.
1942-43. The Allied triumph in the Western Desert An artfully composed collection centring on preparations for the Second Battle of El Alemein and its aftermath. The photographs document captured and destroyed Axis tanks and artillery the advance eastwards to Tunis and visits by Churchill and senior military figures. 285 Air Reconnaissance Wing was formed in July 1942 to oversee all reconnaissance in the Western Desert. The album opens in September-October 1942 when the Middle East Interpretation unit was operating near RAF Landing Ground 89 an important strip for bombing operations. Images from the battle - abandoned tanks and two eery night-time shots of firing artillery - are followed by evidence of his involvement in mid-November in the recapture of the strategic port of Tobruk which had been surrendered to Rommel in June. Photographs show the advance of British trucks and traces of recent hostilities an abandoned German tank and a destroyed bridge as well as the subsequent Allied push towards Benghazi. Between January and March 1943 he was based out of RAF Castel-Benito photographing the celebratory entrance into Tripoli. Press and snapshot photographs record Churchill's inspection tour at Berg-el-Arab in September 1942 accompanied by air vice-marshals Tedder and Coningham. Others document Coningham's visit to LG 89 on 20 October his address to troops his Fieseler Storch captured from the Germans and a seized Stuka dive bomber. Churchill Montgomery and General Freyberg thank the 8th Army at Castel-Benito in February 1943 General Giraud's visits Monastir in May and Freyberg takes the surrenders of generals Giovanni Messe and Kurt Freiherr von Liebenstein in the same month. Further subjects are a funeral for pilots conducted at LG 89 in August 1942 burial grounds for Axis soldiers "war paint" on American Kitty Hawk fighters and the trailer at Monastir where soldiers developed photographs. Landscape quarto album. With 327 gelatin silver photographs mostly snapshot- to postcard-size c. 50 x 80 mm to 90 x 130 mm a few smaller or larger all mounted on brown card leaves fully captioned in calligraphic hand in white ink or later roller ball pen decoration in colour. Brown card covers tied through holes with light brown cord front cover with manuscript title in yellow and white inks manuscript 8th Army and RAF badges gold highlights. Collection of aerial leaflets dropped on Britain by Germany in the Second World War.
1940. Three leaflets dropped by German planes over Britain in 1940 - two comprising Hitler's speeches to the Reichstag appealing for Britain to make peace and an anti-Churchill "wanted" poster mock-up. The "wanted" poster uses one of the most famous images of Churchill holding a Tommy gun and smoking a cigar. The verso of the leaflet claims "This gangster who you see in his element in the picture incites you by his example to participate in a form of warfare in which women children and ordinary civilians shall take leading parts. This absolutely criminal form of warfare which is forbidden by the Hague Convention will be punished according to military law. Save at least your families from the horrors of war!". "Goebbels had thousands of the leaflets dropped over Britain. He ceased the program within two weeks when he realized the image was only boosting Churchill's popularity among Britons" Manchester & Reid p. 190. That summer the Germans targeted more than one hundred towns and cities with leaflet raids hoping to force Britain to make peace and depose Churchill. Later that year they switched to bombing effectively ending their peace efforts. Only a tiny proportion of copies survives: many landed in streams or trees while police and air-raid wardens retrieved others for wastepaper drives. The leaflets are stored in an envelope with a note that the owner J. Cahill was then serving with the Ministry of Home Security; one is stamped "Intelligence Branch" and another has a later note "German leaflet dropped during the Battle of Britain". A large collection of press photographs of the First World War in two albums.
Germany: Vertriebsstelle Deutscher Zeitungen 1914-18. Stunning large format images Two large albums containing a fine selection of double-size double-weight prints of press photographs attractively laid out and with a well-organized chronology. A remarkable overview of the First World War documenting seven European theatres between 1914 and 1918. The images are all press photographs sold by Vertriebsstelle Deutscher Zeitungen with their stamp on the versos. Many of the images are doubtless by official photographers - the portraits of officers group portraits and the like all suggest so - but others show Germans troops in distress and do not shy away from the hardships and horrors of war. The striking large format images are rare and unusual for this period. The photographs are organized geographically with each section marked by a corresponding laid in map of the region. Images of aerial reconnaissance large-scale battle scenes downed aircraft both English and German tanks bridges bombings and obliterated landscapes sit beside more intimate and amusing shots of recreational and ceremonial activities including dancing musicians and what might be half the winning half of a "tug-o-war". Furthermore we gain insight to the experience of troops on the ground. There are shots of soldiers fighting marching in trenches an Italian POW camp a paratrooper caught in a tree wounded soldiers recuperating in hospital and men hastily constructing wooden crosses to mark graves. Included is a rare photograph of a soldier of African descent and another of a soldier apparently being executed. There are pictures of German planes coming to and from bombing raids and English naval targets. Furthermore civilians are depicted: French peasants farmers driving cattle women children refugees and an elaborate funeral procession. This is a grand attempt to document every aspect of the war in Europe. Although the compiler of the album remains anonymous it was doubtless someone who worked for the company or perhaps one of the photographers whose work is included here. The album was probably put together in the years immediately following the war. The entirety of the first album is devoted to the Western Front. Commencing in the north of France Calais Dunkirk and Ostende then inland to Arras and Valenciennes to Montdidier St. Quentin and Meziers finally the area incorporating Chalons Bar le Duc Nancy and Remiront. It includes 321 photographs of which 69 are large size 106 are mid-size and there are 146 smaller size images. Northern Italy and Austria "Die Front am Insonzo" and "Zu den Kämpfen an der Kärntner-Grenze": 129 photographs of which 34 large size 53 mid-size and 42 smaller size images. This commences with two images "Uebesichtskarte über die Isonsofront" and "Insonzo-Offensive: Uebersichtsplan des Durchbruchgebietes." Russia and Poland : 146 photographs including 25 large size 46 mid-size and 75 smaller size images. Black Sea : 23 photographs of which 4 large size 9 mid-size and 10 smaller size images. Caucasus and Persian border "Der Kaukasus und die persischen Grenzgebiete": 20 photographs including 9 large size 3 mid-size and 8 smaller size images. Great Britain "Karte um Fliegerangriff auf London am 13.6.1917." 46 photographs including 9 large size 19 mid-size and 18 smaller size images. Somervell A complete set of the original official US Army wartime reports handsomely produced the personal copies of General Brehon Burke Somervell 1892-1955 George Marshall's commander of Services of Supply the first two being presentation copies from Marshall the cover of each volume gilt lettered with Somervell's name and rank. Services of Supply was one of the three "superagencies" organized by the US Army after the United States's entry into the war in December 1941 - the other two being Army Ground Forces and Army Air Forces - and gathered under its overarching aegis Quartermaster Corps Chemical Warfare Service Signal Corps Corps of Engineers Ordnance Department Medical Corps and Transportation Corps. "General George C. Marshall the army's chief of staff during World War II held Somervell in high regard for his ability to perform monumental tasks and was willing to overlook his penchant for antagonizing others. "What he did was a miracle" said Marshall in a postwar interview. The U.S. Army in World War II was probably the best-supplied army that had ever gone to war. Much of the credit for that accomplishment goes to Somervell who provided the "sinews of war" for a military effort that literally spanned the globe" American National Biography. The conflicting demands of our theater commanders of Allied sovereign powers and of the home front pose difficulties never before approximated in war. The necessity for a high degree of efficiency in management is evident and it has been found in the coordination of all the various supplies and administrative departments of the Army under the command and leadership of Lt. Gen. Brehon B. Somervell. "Published at two-year intervals these reports provide a comprehensive picture of global war as seen from the perspective of the Chief of Staff. The first report describes the race to mobilize an unprepared country and Marshall's appeal on the eve of war for the renewal of Selective Service a reminder of how far the U.S. Army had to come to meet the Axis challenge. The second recounts the initial defeats after Pearl Harbor and the ultimately successful efforts of the United States and its Allies to turn the tide. The final report describes the drive to victory and outlines Marshall's analysis of the reasons for the Allied triumph. Summaries give an overall view of the progress of the war but the scholar and military professional will find most interesting Marshall's comments on such topics as technology the "90-division gamble" the replacement system troop morale and the citizen-soldier and demobilization. Air Raid Precautions post as a local morale booster and fund raiser. Numbered 31 of an unknown limitation only the Imperial War Museum lists a set theirs complete in 36 issues through to May 1942. A scarce resource offering genuine insights into London's uncensored mood under the Blitz. This is a typical wartime mix carrying harrowing reports of the impact of war "Calvary in St James'. almost half Jermyn Street was a shambles"; facetious humour "Is it only a rumour that the favourite drink of the Italian Navy is port"; local notes "the oldest lamp post in London. now unfortunately it has suffered at the hand of the Vandal. destroyed"; some dubious recipes "half a pint of Churchill sauce"; occasional reports from "other parts of the field"; appeals for volunteers; incitements to "carry on!"; all alongside not infrequent moments of genuinely moving introspection; "Piccadilly during the People's War at 9 p.m. Traffic lights flashing monotonously green - yellow - red. The noticeable ticking of the automatic lights' machinery. An occasional taxi and car. A rare bus. Perhaps fifty persons in Piccadilly Circus. The Statue of Eros boarded up and protected by rotting sandbags. The hot blast of exhausted air from the underground exits. The rush of fire-engines towards fire. The pleasing gap where the 'Fifty Shilling Tailors' had their shop. The stark picture of the blackened ruins of St James' church opposite. The whispered appeals of 'Hello darling' from mysterious female forms. The whizzing of shrapnel on the street. The criss-cross of searchlight beams in the heavens. Not a single newsboy. A solitary cat crossing the street". Circulation rose rapidly issue 5 claiming 2000 copies and the following number proclaiming five times that "Last week's issue was completely sold out. Although we keep on printing more and more copies we are quite unable to meet the demand. We claim the BIGGEST SALES of any Blitzkrieg News-sheet in Britain. Copies are being sent as historic mementoes to every part of the world". A "Final Notice" in issue 24 notes that there are for sale "a few bound volumes containing the first 24 issues at Six Guineas $30" maybe about £1000 today in real terms. All moneys raised from the Lyre went to the local St James' Bomber Fund "costs of production are borne privately". Folio. pp. 80 spirit-duplicated text in all on variously coloured paper stock. Original three-quarter - spine and fore-edges - greyish yellow buckram spine lettered longitudinally in black attractive matte black patterned paper boards golden stars on a wavy grid pattern. Red Army propaganda leaflets in German urging Wehrmacht soldiers to surrender.
c.1941-1945. Promising comfortable captivity rather than death on the Eastern Front A substantial collection of Soviet aerial propaganda leaflets in German dropped behind enemy lines to encourage surrender most incorporating safe-conduct passes for presentation upon capitulation. These passes carry wording such as: "I a German soldier refuse to fight against Russian workers and peasants. I voluntarily surrender to the Red Army" translated. Evocative imagery is used such as one leaflet showing a skeleton in SS uniform pointing to a gravestone beneath the warning: "This is your place! You'll be next!" Many employ explicitly socialist appeals urging German workers and peasants not to fight their fellow labourers on behalf of their oppressors. Others claim that numerous German generals have already surrendered insist Germany's defeat is inevitable and warn soldiers not to throw their lives away. Some point to overwhelming American war production as further proof that the war cannot be won. A recurring theme is the favourable treatment allegedly awaiting those who surrender. One leaflet depicts prisoners dining with the caption: "The German prisoners of war are received by the Russians with a tasty fatty and nutritious lunch" alongside the assurance: "All who surrender to the Red Army are guaranteed life good treatment and to return home after the war ends" - an extraordinary claim given that the death rate among German POWs in Soviet captivity has been estimated at roughly one third. 131 leaflets varying sizes.
