This image became a choice souvenir for soldiers passing through Philadelphia.</p> <b>CIVIL WAR.</b>Print. <i>Union Volunteers Refreshment Saloon of Philadelphia</i>. In period frame 35 x 29 in. <p><b>Historical Background</b></p><p>The Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon was organized in South Philadelphia in 1861 by grocer Barzilla S. Brown. He began informally distributing food to Union troops traveling through Philadelphia an important rail and steamer hub. The relief effort became official on May 27 1861. The saloon provided soldiers with food drink stamps and paper and offered traveling troops a place to rest. This initial effort differed in some ways from the later Sanitary Fairs that contributed to the care of sick and wounded soldiers. At this point the civilian members were catering to the needs of healthy new recruits.</p><p>In September the Refreshment Saloon added a hospital to aid sick and wounded troops. The saloon supported itself through donations of food clothing cash and later through admission cost to view the Confederate navy vessel <i>Ram</i> which was captured in 1863. After providing social and medical services for four years the saloon closed in late 1865.</p><p><b>James Fuller Queen</b> 1820-1886 apprenticed to learn lithographic draftsmanship. He drew a large variety of lithographs for large printing houses of Wagner & McGuigan Thomas Sinclair and P. S. Duval. He drew views of buildings cities scenic attractions newsworthy events portraits sheet music covers diplomas illustrations for magazines and other images. He also became an outstanding chromolithographer. His view of the "Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon" is one of Queen's most complex works and perhaps the one for which he is best known. He later drew the United States Sanitary Commission Fair in Philadelphia.</p><p><b>Thomas S. Sinclair</b> c. 1805-1881 was born in the Orkney Islands of Scotland and studied lithography in Edinburgh and other cities. He started his own printing firm in Philadelphia in 1838. He was among the first in Philadelphia to experiment with color lithography. From 1854 to 1859 his brother joined him in the firm of Thomas Sinclair & Co. Later his son worked with him in Thomas Sinclair & Son. He published three different hand-colored lithographs by Queen of Brown's Refreshment Saloon and its friendly rival William M. Cooper's Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon in 1861.</p> Thomas Sinclair

DORR WAR.</b>Book. <i>Report of the Trial of Thomas Wilson Dorr for Treason; Including the Testimony at Length.Together with the Sentence of the Court and the Speech of Mr. Dorr Before Sentence.</i> Providence R.I. B.F. Moore 1844. 1st ed. 115 pp. 5 1/3 x 8¾ in. </p><p>Based on Rhode Island's colonial charter over half of adult males were disenfranchised. Thomas W. Dorr led the effort to change Rhode Island's political system and expand voting rights. After trying to change the system internally he created the People's Party held an extralegal constitutional convention and set up a competing government. The Rhode Island General Assembly drafted a rival constitution and in 1842 both groups voted on their respective Constitutions. Both Dorr and sitting Governor Samuel Ward King were elected governor but King refused to accept the People's Constitution declared martial law and accused Dorr of treason. While he did not attempt to seize the State House or governmental institutions a few armed clashes did occur. Dorr fled the state but returned and was convicted in 1843 but released for health reasons two years later. Ultimately Rhode Island greatly liberalized voting rights in the aftermath of the rebellion. This trial record prepared by his defense attorneys is especially scarce. R & B 44-2044. Fisher was widely read and respected for his short stories which appeared in the popular magazines of the 1930's such as "Cosmopolitan" "Saturday Evening Post" "Colliers" "Liberty" etc. when his first novel was published. The adaptation of his novel I Wake Up Screaming is regarded as the first of Hollywood's film-noir genre. Fisher worked on the screenplays for "Berlin Correspondent" "To the Shores of Tripoli "Destination Tokyo "Lady in the Lake" and "Song of the Thin Man" among others. Mark Hellinger's career in Hollywood included producer credits for "They Drive by Night" "High Sierra" "The Horn Blows at Midnight" and "The Naked City" among others. This copy was inscribed by Fisher during the production of the film version of the novel on which he also worked as screenwriter. Inscribed & Dated by Author. First Edition. Hardcovers. He joined the Union Army during the American Civil War in November 1862 and served as Quartermaster of Company A 9th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry. In 1863 Ransom was captured in Tennessee and taken to Andersonville Georgia. During his imprisonment he kept a diary of his experiences. On the 6th July 1864 he wrote: "Boiling hot camp reeking with filth and no sanitary privileges; men dying off over 140 per day. Stockade enlarged taking in eight or ten more acres giving us more room and stumps to dig up for wood to cook with. Jimmy Devers has been a prisoner over a year and poor boy will probably die soon." Of the 49485 prisoners who entered the camp nearly 13000 died from disease and malnutrition. This is Ransom's stunning first-hand account of stay in Andersonville. The Hammond Gazette March 30 1864. Vol. 2 No. 20.
<p>A nice example of a very uncommon newspaper printed weekly for the staff and patients of Hammond General or Point Lookout Hospital during 1863 and 1864. This Hospital for Union troops was constructed at the location of a summer resort on an isolated peninsula extending into Chesapeake Bay. After the Battle of Gettysburg during which a large number of Confederate troops were captured Point Lookout also quickly became the location of the largest Union prison camp. </p><p>The newspaper carries war news some general news and even a bit of poetry. The back page contains a list of the staff of the Hospital as well as the names States and units of the current patients. There were about 250 patients at the Hospital when this issue of the newspaper was printed. </p><p>The newspaper also contains several Army reports and notices including one noting the continued poor health of General Meade and the likelihood that "in consequence thereof General Grant will command the army in person." Also included is a clarifying proclamation regarding amnesty issued by President Lincoln.</p><p>Issues of this wartime hospital newspaper are very uncommon. As an indication of its rarity: the American Antiquarian Society which has the country's largest collection of newspapers only holds nine issues of the paper not including the issue offered here. Minor damage at lower left corner with some flaking of the paper. Slight age-toning to the colors. Framed in an elaborate gilt composite contemporary frame with acrylic glaze. In this artistic composition of the events in Santiago the oval profile portrait inset in the upper right corner depicts U.S. Rear Admiral Schley the victor of the sea battle. Schley was originally not included in Admiral Sampson's reports of the battle due to ill feelings between the two men. However the truth of who was in command of the actual battle were soon known and Schley became a national hero with a promotion to rear Admiral. . J. Hoover & Sons unknown
