‎THE INVASION BEFORE NORMANDY: The Secret Battle of Slapton Sands‎

‎London: Robert Hale 1988. Shortly before D-Day in 1944 a rehearsal exercise took place in Devon on a beach resembling Utah Beach. A series of blunders allowed lightly armed forces to lie at the mercy of prowling German E-Boats. The resulting carnage was hushed-up at the time using threats of Courts Martial and remained little more than a rumour for over 30 years. This book tells the story of the disaster at Slapton Sands. 210 pages. 16 pages of b/w plates. Every book is sent in a cardboard postal package. Paperback Edition 8th Impression. Paperback. New. 21.5 Cm x 14 Cm. Robert Hale Paperback‎

‎“The Excursion of the Bought Nominations” Showing Balloon “Union League”‎

‎
CIVIL WAR.Broadside "The Excursion of the Bought Nominations The Large Balloon 'Union League' Will Start Immediately. The Balloon is managed by the Old Hunkers in the Ring." 1864. 4 ¾ x 8 ½ in.
Historical Background
The Union League Club formed in New York in 1863 to support Union troops and cultivate civil devotion. Made up of prominent citizens in New York Philadelphia Brooklyn New Haven and Chicago the clubs raised money to provide for the U.S. Sanitary Commission and establish a group of political elites to sustain Union military efforts. The league favored a strong central government tariff protections and internal improvements.

The "Old Hunkers" were the conservative branch of the New York state Democratic party in the mid-nineteenth century. They favored the status quo whether in business or on the contentious issue of slavery. The more progressive "Barnburner" faction stood in opposition to the old Hunkers and were against slavery strong state powers expanding the public debt and government subsidizing businesses.

Though the Old Hunkers shared many similarities in terms of business philosophy with the Union League—especially that of strong central government power and infrastructure improvements—the disconnect between the two groups' stance on slavery makes this cartoon perplexing. Are the Old Hunkers carefully managing the political situation the balloon through the New York political machine note the capital "R" of Ring as in the infamous Tweed Ring Or are they setting the progressive Union Leaguers adrift
‎

‎CIVIL WAR‎

‎The Success of Black Troops At Petersburg Virginia Under Butler‎

‎
"They grinned and pushed on and with a yell that told the southern chivalry their doom they rolled irresistibly over and into the work."
CIVIL WAR.Broadside. New England Loyal Publication Society No. 200. Boston Mass. June 27 1864. 1 p. 9 x 10¾ in.
A New York Tribune reporter praises the performance of the USCT: "I find that in my account of the assault upon the rebel works in front of Petersburg I hardly did the colored troops justice. As before stated they held a position on the Jourdan Point road. They were first directed to assault the earthwork.the charge upon the advanced works was made in splendid style; and as the 'dusky warriors' stood shouting upon the parapet Gen. Smith decided that 'they would do' and sent word for them to storm the first redoubt. Steadily these troops moved on led by officers whose unostentatious bravery is worthy of emulation. With a shout and rousing cheers they dashed at the redoubt. Grape and canister were hurled at them by the infuriated rebels. They grinned and pushed on and with a yell that told the southern chivalry their doom rolled irresistibly over and into the work. The guns were speedily turned upon those of our 'misguided brethren' who forgot that 'discretion was the better part of valor.'

Another redoubt was carried in the same gallant style and the negroes have established a reputation that they will surely maintain."

With a discussion on using monies gathered from draft exemption payments to give bonuses when recruiting black troops in the South: "as the government will continue to receive exemption money why should it not devote the sums which are likely to be thus gathered to bounties for soldiers white or black enlisting in the South. In that way the ranks could be kept full."

With reports on how the Southern planter aristocracy hates Lincoln and Johnson as running mate because both rose through the ranks of the "common" people.

Historical Background

The Boston-based New England Loyal Publication Society and the Loyal Publication Society of New York was founded in 1863 to bolster public support by disseminating pro-Union news articles and editorials to newspapers around the country. At first the two groups read newspapers to identify particularly useful articles and editorials and contact the editors to request that additional copies be printed. These items would then be distributed to Union soldiers or to newspapers. As the war progressed the societies began to write and publish their own broadsides.

Condition

Very good. Tape 1 inch on verso at horizontal fold some water stains visible mostly from back. Better than it sounds!
‎

‎DORR WAR‎

‎Ohio Reformers Use Rhode Island's Dorr Rebellion to Justify Their Own Behavior‎

‎
DORR WAR.Pamphlet. The Dorr Movement in Ohio; Being an Examination into the Causes Progress and Probable Effects of the Revolutionary Course of Locofocoism in the Organization of the General Assembly of This State for the Session of 1848-49. Columbus Ohio: Legg & Murray Columbus 1849. Disbound. Inscribed in pencil on the title by H.A. Swift the author in presentation.
Historical Background
The Locofocos were a faction that split from the New York Democratic party in 1835 after local disagreements with machine politicians and Tammany Hall's support of Andrew Jackson's stance on the national bank. They opposed state banks monopolies exclusive privilege and other antidemocratic measures. They also advocated suspending paper money and legal protection of labor unions. In New York the machine politicians ultimately prevailed by co-opting their principal issues and nominating fusion candidates and reabsorbing the dissidents by 1838.

The anti-bank anti-corporation and increased democracy movement gained steam in neighboring Ohio throughout the 1840s with many looking to the Dorr movement in Rhode Island as a template for their own acts.

In 1841 Rhode Island's Thomas W. Dorr had led the effort to change Rhode Island's political system and expand voting rights. After trying to change the system internally he created the People's Party held an extralegal constitutional convention and set up a competing government. The Rhode Island General Assembly drafted a rival constitution and in 1842 both groups voted on their respective Constitutions. Both Dorr and sitting Governor Samuel Ward King were elected governor but King refused to accept the People's Constitution declared martial law and accused Dorr of treason. While he did not attempt to seize the State House or governmental institutions a few armed clashes did occur. Dorr fled the state but returned and was convicted in 1843 but released for health reasons two years later. Ultimately Rhode Island greatly liberalized voting rights in the aftermath of the rebellion.

NAIP 358662. The American Antiquarian Society lists another edition with slightly different imprint with 1848 date.
‎

‎VERNACULAR PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF IMAGES BY A UNITED STATES ARMY SOLDIER STATIONED AT CAMP PARAISO NEAR THE PANAMA CANAL DURING THE EARLY YEARS OF WORLD WAR II SHOWING THEIR TRAINING BASE MILITARY VESSELS IN THE PANAMA CANAL RELIEF EFFORTS FOR A LOCAL COMMUNITY RECREATIONS DURING OFF HOURS AND MORE‎

‎Camp Paraíso and vicinity Panama 1939-1940. Six partially printed pages filled in manuscript plus thirty album leaves with 120 mounted photos most 4 x 5 inches. Oblong quarto. Contemporary limp brown suede photo album with illustration of the Panama Canal and the United States shield and eagle on the front cover. Some light soiling and wear to covers and album leaves. Images mostly clean and crisp with occasional slight mirroring or small stains. Very good. A personal photo album of mostly original images compiled by a soldier serving in the United States 5th Infantry stationed at the Panama Canal at the outbreak of World War II. The Canal Zone would become vital to the American war effort and was one of the most important strategic locations in the hemisphere. In 1939 Camp Paraiso which had been abandoned a few years earlier was reinstated as a military base and the 5th Infantry constructed barracks a post office a movie theater and other structures that contributed to its becoming one of the primary settlements in the Canal Zone after the war.

The soldier who created this album was likely Irish-American John T. Curran based on an ink stamp on the front cover. The soldier was a native of Maine who was stationed at Camp Paraiso from 1939 to 1940. He has captured a variety of images including of troop transports and battleships as they travel through the Canal the crews of those ships visiting the base soldiers in and out of uniform in camp at mess drilling constructing buildings or relaxing fighter planes in a nearby field and even a Catholic mass in the ruins of the Convento de San José built in 1612. A particularly interesting series of photos depicts U.S. Army soldiers on a relief mission providing food and supplies to local men women and children in the almost entirely demolished remains of a city. Six pages at the front of the album titled "Autographs of my Friends" are filled with the signatures and addresses of over forty other members of the troop. Each signature is accompanied by a comment ranging from the heartfelt to the flat out insulting perhaps most appropriately summed up by a Sergeant Smith who writes "Till we meet again not in Panama I hope." An interesting collection of photographs from a soldier in the American theatre during the outset of the Second World War. unknown‎

‎VERNACULAR PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF A MEMBER OF THE UNITED STATES 81st INFANTRY "WILDCATS" DURING THE ALLIED OCCUPATION OF JAPAN IN 1945‎

‎Various places including Sapporo and Aomori Prefecture 1945. 298 mounted photographs on 35 leaves most photographs 2 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches. Plus one laid-in photograph of Company A with one member's picture excised. Oblong folio photograph album. Blindstamped red paper in the form of faux leather gilt pictorial embossed illustration on front board string-tied. Minor peeling and rubbing to boards. Most leaves loose between boards images clean and in good condition. Very good overall. An interesting vernacular photograph album kept by a member of the United States 81st Infantry Division nicknamed the "Wildcats" in occupied Japan. The division embarked for Hawaii in June of 1944 and saw action with heavy casualties in Palau and Peleliu. They were deployed to the Philippines for most of the rest of the war and after the Japanese surrender were stationed in Aomori Prefecture as a part of the Allied occupation force. This photo album dates from the latter period and largely from what appears to be an extended trip to Sapporo across the Tsugaru Strait. The unnamed soldier who compiled this album supplies numerous pictures of the city and his friends in the regiment generally captioned in blue ink. Photographs tend to focus on the city's architecture including schools and municipal buildings as well as long distance shots of the skyline cultural sites such as a Shinto shrine or events such as a parade and local girls. There are also some photos of locals including a group of young Japanese men a family with young infants and shop or street scenes. The other main focus of the album is on the American military with many images of the soldier and his friends posing in front of their vehicles including tanks cars and battleships or relaxing in camp or on the town.

The "Wildcat" division was organized in 1917 in Tennessee composed mostly of Southern soldiers. Their training took place at Camp Jackson near Wildcat Creek and the story goes that some soldiers trapped an actual wildcat "Tuffy" near the eponymous creek and kept it as a mascot. Tuffy was a popular addition and the Wildcat was officially adopted as the symbol of the division in 1918. After protracted arguments with administration the unit's leader Major General Charles Bailey touted the advantages of a shoulder patch with the Wildcat logo in boosting the morale of the soldiers. General Pershing approved the use of the patch reportedly saying "all right go ahead and wear it; and see to it that you live up to it." The division was reinstated for the Second World War then deactivated again in January of 1946.

An interesting collection of photographs from an American soldier in Japan immediately after the war. hardcover‎

‎[Vietnam War]: [Thailand‎

‎VERNACULAR PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM DOCUMENTING AFRICAN-AMERICAN AIR FORCE SOLDIERS IN THAILAND DURING THE VIETNAM WAR‎

‎Various places in Thailand perhaps centering on Korat Royal Thai Air Force Bas 1977. Seventy-seven Kodak color photographs almost all approximately 3 1/2 x 5 inches a handful slightly smaller and one postcard. Slim quarto. Contemporary glossy purple floral-patterned cloth photograph album gilt- stamped label on front cover. Some images slightly faded. Overall very good. A highly entertaining collection of vernacular photographs capturing the lives of young African-American G.I.s and their romantic interests in a village in Thailand during the latter years of the Vietnam War. The photographs show African-American men in both uniforms and street clothes often posed alone or with Thai locals almost exclusively women. The men are seen at work and play including an image of the gun shop with a sign labeled "Phase Section" on the front and a large military van with a similar sign reading "2 Orange." There is also a great deal of coverage of the locals living in the village including women and children. One photograph of particular interest shows part of a commercial building emblazoned with both a Coca-Cola and a Pepsi sign. The date range of 1972 to 1977 stems from the fact that some of the photographs are date-stamped in the margin "Oct 72" and one later image is stamped July 1977; most images seem to emanate from the earlier date. The single postcard is an image of Wang Not Ten Waterfall in Phitsanulok in north-central Thailand. The album could possibly have been retained by a local Thai person documenting their interactions with the visiting Americans.

There were a half dozen active American Air Force bases in Thailand during the 1970s from which over 80% of the air strikes of North Vietnam originated. The American servicemen seen in the present photographs were either airmen performing these strikes or ground crew in support of the pilots. Also given that Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base and Phitsanulok are both in north-central Thailand it is likely the images depict this area.

A rare look at African-American servicemen in a strategically important region of Thailand during the Vietnam War. hardcover‎

‎Indiana and Camp McClellan A 1918. Contemporary black cloth photograph album with over 100 mounted silver-gelatin photographs. Minor shelf wear. A few loose photographs. Very good. An interesting vernacular photograph album of a young American's life in the early 20th century. The compiler of the album served with the 36th Artillery Regiment and trained at Camp McClellan in Alabama of which there are almost fifty photographs present here. Additionally most of the photographs are annotated in ink identifying the soldiers in the photographs the settings and locations and the activities in the pictures. The photographs include tanks a gas mask a brownie gun and three shots of an African- American soldier or staffer. Numerous images capture the training in progress with the soldiers "out on a hike" while they "prepare for action guns set ready for loading" and more. One image depicts a simple Alabama farm and is captioned in manuscript "Alabama scene."

The remainder of the album is devoted to the young man's life in Indiana with numerous shots of farm life and prairie land and including a trip to a cabin in Morgan County. These shots are not annotated but provide an important peek into rural life in the Midwest during the early 20th century. hardcover‎

‎IS THE WAR A FAILURE caption title‎

‎New York 1864. Broadside approximately 11 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches. Small portion of upper left corner torn away short closed at tear at upper right. Tanning light mat burn. Good plus. This scarce broadside rebuts Copperhead claims that the War is a disastrous mistake requiring that "immediate efforts be made for a cessation of hostilities." Issued during the critical 1864 presidential campaign it quotes generals Grant Sherman Seymour and Dix who make clear that the Rebels are on their last legs. In fact "The rebel cause is fast failing from exhaustion." Grant reports: "The rebels now have in their ranks their last man. The little boys and old men" are filling the ranks. "AMERICANS! ‎Richmon 1864. 2pp. Minor toning to edges very faint ink stamp of the Rebel Archives on first page. Very good. An interesting slip-bill seeking to authorize the Confederate treasurer to take account of Tennessee's military expenditures since their "early withdrawal from the United States." Apparently the state of Tennessee was seeking reimbursement for military expenses and also for the loss of disbursement vouchers that resulted from Tennessee "being overrun by the enemy and by the burning of the buildings occupied by the Quartermaster and Commissary and other unavoidable causes."

The bill was put forth by James McCallum who represented Tennessee in the Second Confederate Congress. Like many others around the end of 1864 McCallum must have seen the writing on the wall and tried to get back as much money for his state as possible as the war and thus the Confederacy ended just about four months later. ‎Mexico Cit: Printed by R. Rafael 1847. 7pp. Dbd. Minor toning soft vertical crease throughout. Very good. The English-language portion of a rare bilingual-printed Mexican pamphlet from the waning months of the Mexican-American War. The Spanish portion of eight pages was published with a separate titlepage as INSTRUCCIONES OTORGADAS POR LA JUNTA GENERAL DE ELECTORES A LOS REPRESENTANTES DE LA CIUDAD Y DISTRITO DE MEXICO. Ostensibly a short instructional guide for future elected representatives in Mexico the work is also a bitter indictment of both American imperial expansion and ineffectual Mexican political authorities. The author rails against the "deplorable occupation" of the United States and also the "imbecile abandonment" by Mexican authorities. The article concludes with a list of seven guidelines for the formation of a new elected assembly. ‎Fredericksburg 1862. 4pp. Folio. Old folds. Tanned light wear and soiling several very small holes. Good plus. An anti-secession newspaper published in Confederate Virginia by Unionist James W. Hunnicutt. Hunnicutt published his paper until August 1862 when he fled Fredericksburg because of his Union sympathies. How he got away with it as long as he did is remarkable when one reads the contents. This issue includes a report on Rebel cruelty news of the continued fighting in Charleston updates on the activities of the Army of the Potomac and an interesting column outlining twelve ways in which those advocating secession lie just like the devil:

"We have always known and ever maintained that the only security the South and Southern institutions had was contained in the provisions of the Federal Constitution. We indignantly spurn the base imputation and pronounce it an unmitigated secession falsehood. The traitors and enemies of the South are the Secession leaders of the South. Where are the men who fired up the Southern heart and precipitated this once glorious independent prosperous and happy country into the present terrible revolution.Abolitionism and secession combined to effect the overthrow of our government - the downfall of our country - Great God!
