WWI Lieutenant Heyser's archive of 178 letters Correspondence Spanning World War I Life as a Serviceman c. 1918
1918. Warren W. Heyser archive of 178 letters and envelopes chiefly 1918-1919 and spanning 1914 through the late 1920s addressed to Antoinette Mertz in Newark New Jersey. Many letters are written on Army and Navy Young Men's Christian Association "With the Colors" stationery; others are in commercial hotel envelopes from Pittsburgh Baltimore Buffalo Indianapolis Toledo Youngstown Cleveland and Cincinnati.<br /> <br /> The wartime letters place Heyser at Baltimore Camp Meade and Camp Zachary Taylor during the final year of American mobilization and its aftermath. From Baltimore in 1918 he writes "Sudden changes have overcast my life and to-day am now a member of army" adding "About 300000 leave here to-morrow for France" and "About 50000 men here. The camp is 5 miles square." From Camp Zachary Taylor also in 1918 he writes "Have been in this camp for about two weeks and find it the hardest camp of all" and describes field artillery training: "We arise at 5:15 A.M. and last period closes 8:45 P.M. and every minute is taken up and believe me we are kept on the jump."<br /> <br /> Heyser's Camp Meade letters describe depot-brigade processing recruit intake class mixture fatigue and preparation for overseas assignment. One 1918 letter states "A camp is like huge machinery. One part takes care of new men and about one months time they are assigned to permanent co's then sent over seas after few months in their regular co." Another reads "Must say though this is rather hard task to convert a citizen into a soldier and as soon as he is properly fit he is sent on and a new batch of about 100 come under my hand." A further Camp Meade letter notes "The drafters are rolling into these camps by the thousands" while a July 1918 letter records that "About 1/4 of men are absolutely filthy" and that "fellows from very best families in country university graduates are likewise to be found here."<br /> <br /> The correspondence also records wartime news and return from service. A 1918 Pittsburgh letter refers to the Eddystone Chemical Company explosion: "No is the town of Oakdale probably during the big Explosion of the Eddystone Chemical Co. No doubt you read same in paper this AM. Several hundred killed and 100 injured." After the armistice a 1919 Indianapolis letter reads "This is like a note from the dead" followed by "Am now back on home soil and soon as possible will be on my way." In another 1918 Camp Meade letter Heyser writes "However I sincerely hope your nephew never grows up to become a soldier in Uncle Sam's Army for such life is very far from representation.". unknown

<p>Antony / Devonport May 16 1901. 1901. Fine. - Over 135 words penned on four sides of 7 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide "Antony / Devonport" stationery. In his letter addressed to "My dear Hughes" from his Antony House Estate in Cornwall the British Army Officer and Liberal Unionist Member of Parliament Sir Reginald Pole-Carew discusses arrangements for outdoor festivities "".I am anxious to get these entertainment done quickly as promised - and as there is a clever Conjuror whom I know in Plymouth now so seems a pity not to have the out of door's show while he is here and while this lovely weather lasts." He hopes Hughes can come as "Mother will be delighted to see you on Friday." In a postscript he agrees with Hughes that "the Band should be on the evening preceding the outdoors show" and ponders whether there is still time to arrange it. Signed "Reg Pole-Carew". Folded for mailing else fine.</p><p>Celebrated as a military hero the British army officer and landowner Lieutenant-General Sir Reginald Pole-Carew 1849-1924 was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards in 1869. He served with Lord Roberts in the Second Anglo-Afghan War and in the Second Boer War. Promoted to Colonel he was given command of the 9th Brigade with the "local" rank of major-general and led during the Battle of Modder River. Appointed to command the Guards Brigade he later commanded the 11th Division of the South Africa Field Force and in 1903 became the General Officer Commanding the 8th Division in Southern Ireland. He served as a Liberal Unionist Member of Parliament for Bodmin. In February of 1901 the year of this letter Pole-Carew married Lady Beatrice Frances Elizabeth Butler the King and his family receiving them two days prior to their wedding to present Beatrice with wedding presents.</p> Antony / Devonport, May 16, 1901.

1918. Liverpool Education Committee Holt School nursing award certificate 1918 honors women's World War I service through an elaborate visual program centered on a Red Cross nurse. The certificate places nursing within a wider field of women's wartime labor showing smaller portraits of women working in traditionally male occupations around the central nurse figure. Its imagery and Tennyson quotation connect female service to national duty civic recognition and arguments for women's public importance during the final year of the war.<br /> <br /> Holt School. The text states that it was "the fourth certificate awarded by the Liverpool Education Comittee in place of a prize during the great war."<br /> <br /> The certificate belongs to wartime educational culture that publicly acknowledged women's labor while the war accelerated debates over citizenship work and social recognition. Rhode Island: 24 March 1778. Sustaining Burgoyne's Wandering Army Revealing a crucial moment in the aftermath of Saratoga this 1778 receipt documents the transfer of £56000 from New York to support General Burgoyne's imprisoned Convention Army in Boston. The receipt was signed at a delicate point for the British Army. In the summer of 1777 General William Howe succeeded in taking Philadelphia but in October a separate force under John Burgoyne was forced to surrender to Horatio Gates following the two battles of Saratoga in the autumn of 1777. Subsequently the Convention Army named for the treaty of surrender was marched to Boston where they were held prisoner. Burgoyne was permitted to leave for England in April 1778 but his army remained in captivity until the end of the war. This immense sum of £56000 perhaps equivalent to £9500000 today was sent to Burgoyne to feed his starving army. The Battles of Saratoga represented the turning point of the Revolutionary War winning the assistance from France "which was the last element needed for victory" Morgan pp. 82-3. The receipt was signed by Richard Molesworth 1737-1799 a longstanding deputy paymaster in the War Office. Molesworth is briefly mentioned in a letter to Howe on 10 April 1778 where the need for money to support General Burgoyne and his army in Boston is discussed. Richard was the brother of the Robert 5th Viscount Molesworth who inherited the title from his cousin Richard Nassau Molesworth 4th Viscount Molesworth who died without heirs. This document was previously folded and kept in an envelope mounted on the front pastedown of a book from the Molesworth family library a first edition of the English translation of Souligné's The Desolation of France Demonstrated. It was gifted by Souligné to Robert Molesworth 1st viscount Molesworth 1656-1725. Molesworth has inscribed the front blank: "Donum Authoris" Gift from the Author and his note on the title-page reads: "Mons. De Souligny sic Grandson to the famous Du Plessis Mornay". The 1st Viscount Molesworth was an experienced political figure and a prominent member of the Privy Council of Ireland who later held a seat for Dublin County in the Irish House of Commons. The book has a later ownership inscription of Samuel Crompton 1753-1827 on the preliminary blank. Crompton was a pioneer of the spinning industry and was married to Harriet Molesworth the daughter of John Edward Nassau Molesworth. John was the great-grandson of Robert Molesworth 1st Viscount Molesworth. A 20th-century bookplate of another viscount Molesworth is pasted over the white envelope which held the subsistence receipt on the front pastedown. Also present is a manuscript bankers' draft dated 1796 signed by the 5th Viscount Molesworth requesting a payment to his son-in-law John Forster Hill. Single leaf 147 x 187 mm hand-written on both sides in black ink; the book: octavo 186 x 117 mm; also with manuscript bankers' draft dated 1796 and signed by Robert 5th Viscount Molesworth. The book: contemporary black crushed morocco raised bands spine gilt in compartments covers ornamentally gilt marbled endpapers. Ink annotations possibly in Crompton's hand. Rubbed minor loss at spine ends a few marks to covers binding open to the cords after free endpapers but sound occasional minor staining. ESTC R8752; Goldsmiths' 3380. 3380. Album of sketches made in Tianjin by Ensign Francis Sadleir Brereton.
Tientsin: 1861. Peace reigns in Tianjin after the bloody taking of the Taku Forts Highly engaging album the core of which comprises 26 sketches of Tientsin Tianjin in 1861 sketched by Ensign Francis Sadleir Brereton the year following the conclusion of the Second Opium War; with additional views of Singapore and Java. A unique visual record of Qing dynasty Tianjin as seen through the eyes of a young British army officer. Brereton 1838-1911 was commissioned ensign in the Royal North Gloucestershire Militia in November 1855 transferring to the 2nd Battalion 60th Rifles in December of the same year. Even among sharpshooters he was clearly a crack shot serving as inspector of musketry and winning both the Ladies' Purse and Challenge Prize. In 1857 he sailed with his battalion to South Africa. Following service in India during the Rebellion and in China during the Second Opium War he resigned his commission in 1865. He afterwards practised as an architect with his father-in-law Frederick Beeston then independently as an architect and surveyor. In 1889 he was elected to serve on the first London County Council. During the 18th century drawing masters were established at the military training centres at Woolwich Chatham High Wycombe and Addiscombe with the aim of instructing officer cadets in drawing and watercolour. Although there is no record of Brereton having studied in this way his sketchbook comprises an accomplished series of views very much in the tradition of the soldier-artist. In light of his subsequent career his interest in architectural detail is evident in a number of highly worked and painstaking sketches of temples and cityscapes occasionally employing dense hachures and some interesting compositional framing. To the modern eye they have a haunted quality reminiscent of the deserted vistas of Giorgio de Chirico. The first action in which he was engaged was I believe an attack on the Taku Forts when he and a small command went over the side and waded ashore" undated personal stationery. The present work reprints speeches and statements issued by the organization's senior officers sessions of its constituent bodies and a Stalin Prize winner. Spitfire and Bomber Squadron. Cut out model builder.
Australia: Ace Industries 1941. Six sheets of stamp-cut perforated card being many individual push out shapes printed in colour on both sides to form planes troops and so forth. Each sheet measures 255 x 420 mm. and all are housed within the original printed covers. Excellent condition with all parts intact. An attractive relic of an Australian aviation amusement for children printed during the Second World War. As the printed rear cover explains 'all items are perforated and punched and taking one sheet at a time the various illustrations should be pressed out by releasing the holding pieces and cut-out lines. First assemble the airmen parachutists mechanics soldiers stretcher bearers bren gun anti-aircraft gun and machine guns using the stands made of heavy board.' The final result is an airfield in cardboard and 'when the set is completely assembled many interesting hours will be spent in manoeuvring the various planes lorries soldiers airmen etc. into action positions'.</p> <p>The present example is remarkable for being uncirculated with all pieces exactly as the game was issued. It is an example of the extent to which the War entered mundane aspects of everyday life. The game is included in Marcie Muir's Australian Children's Books 7023. Copies in any condition are scarce with only three held in Australian institutional collections. Ace Industries unknown

World War I: US Army Signal Corps Photo Archive of 42nd Div Action in France
World War One Archive of photographs of US soldiers in action produced by the U.S. Army Signal Corps. 4 black and white photos each measure 8.5" x 6.5." One photo shows soldiers of the 168th infantry washing up in a stone trough. Another photo shows the marking of the grave of 1st Lieutenant Quentin Roosevelt son of former President Teddy Roosevelt. Quentin was KIA in July 1918 when his plane was shot down in France. One photo shows American soldiers on horseback from the 167th infantry marching to attack in a "Boche" or abandoned German trench. In the last photo we see soldiers carrying supper to other soldiers in front line trenches with a war torn medieval French home in the background. Because this was official photography from the U.S. signal corps these photos are high quality and present a cohesive representation of a GI's experience in WWI. These photos mostly present the American soldiers in the final days of World War I in France. Photos have a number at the bottom left corner Signal Corps U.S.A. and/or U.S. Official badge at bottom edge. The Photographic Section of the Signal Corps was established in June 1917 and it was responsible for the U.S. Army's official ground and aerial photography of World War I. The photos came with detailed captions that give valuable context. In very good condition overall. unknown

Report of the International Scientific Commission for the Investigation of the Facts Concerning Bacterial Warfare in Korea and China.
Beijing: Foreign Languages Press 1952. Perhaps the most controversial scientific report of the 1950s First edition in English first printing scarce in commerce of the so-called "Needham Report" an explosive exposé of American biological warfare in Korea compiled by the International Scientific Commission a team of scientists including the British biochemist and Cambridge don Joseph Needham. In March 1952 Needham and his colleagues were invited by the Soviet-backed World Peace Council to undertake an impartial investigation into Washington's conduct in the Korean theatre. The final publication released on 31 August 1952 was immediately divisive - lauded by the Communist bloc and dismissed by the United States for its "pseudo-scientific paraphernalia. skilfully designed to impress" Defence Research Board quoted in Avery unpaginated. Needham was blacklisted in Western academia although the report's findings came to seem increasingly credible. Bertrand Russell originally a sceptic later wrote in his 1969 autobiography that given developments in Vietnam "I owe Professor Needham and others my sincere apologies for thinking these charges too extreme". In addition to the report Needham 1900-1995 is most well known for his monumental Science and Civilisation in China a defining contribution to the study of the history of science. Quarto. Covers creased with a few small losses tidemarks on rear cover and at head of spine contents evenly toned with light cockling to final quarter a few neatly repaired closed tears illustrations generally well-preserved with browning to map: a very good copy. The first edition. The original cloth map box containing sixteen folding maps and plans from the Siege of Sevastopol. This work was intended to accompany the 'Journal of the Siege of Sebastopol'. Each map is mounted on paper-covered folding boards. Printed at the Topographical Department for the British War Office under the direction of Captain Elphinstone. The Siege of Sevastopol which was called 'Sebastopol' at the time occurred during the Crimean War in 1854 until 1855. The siege was undertaken by the allied forces which then comprised of France Sardinia the Ottoman Empire and Great Britain and was intended as a victorious march to Sevastopol the capital of Crimea.
