[WORLD WAR II MAPS] THOMPSON, KENNETH W (ARTIST); ELIOT, GEORGE FIELDING
Five WWII Bird's-eye View Maps including the Pacific and Southeast Asia.
Remington Rand. 1944. Five printed colour maps each: 31.4 x 47 cms; 46.3 x 53.3 cms sheet central fold marginal edge wear chips and a few small edge tears tidemark affecting the ocean at the outer edge of Map VII but all the maps in very good condition. From a series of World War II battlefront maps "for the delight of arm-chair strategists" published by the Library Bureau of Remington Rand seven were published. Taken from a bird's eye view of the globe and with relief artistically rendered by artist Kenneth Thompson 1907-1996 and descriptive text by George Fielding Eliot 1894-1971. Eliot spent his youth in Australia attending Melbourne University serving with distinction in the Australian Infantry in WWI. Moving to the United States after a short stint in Canada serving with the RCMP her served as a reserve officer in the U.S. Army reserve in military intelligence from 1922 to 1933 and during WWII Eliot famously broadcast the first extended television coverage following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He continued to write books and articles about military strategy and world politics into the 1960s. <br> <br>In keeping with the "aviation-age" cartography of Richard Edes Harrison the unusual perspective of the maps--from above and often with a direction other than north at the top of the map--challenges the viewer to reconsider the geopolitical situation with the text of Eliot as a further prompt his captions below: <br> <br>Map III Italy & South France "Hannibal Caesar and Napoleon made their reputations here" <br>Map IV The Western Front "Will the cockpit of 1918 see the decisive battles of 1944" <br>Map V Southeastern Asia "The road to Mandalay -- and to China --along which bombs for Tokyo must travel" <br>Map VI The Southwest Pacific "Island-hopping toward Japan -- in short and long hops" <br>Map V11 The North Pacific "Here the enemy trusts in the protection of vast ocean distances" . La Notte The Night Three original photographs from the 1961 film
N.p.: N.p. 1961. Three vintage borderless reference photographs from the 1961 Italian film. Stamp of photographer Paul Ronald on the versos of two photographs.<br /> <br /> The second film in director Michelangelo Antonioni's trilogy that begins with "L'Avventura" 1960 and ends with "L'Eclisse" 1962.<br /> <br /> Probably no one has ever said it better than Bosley Crowther who reviewed the film for the New York Times in 1961: "Too sensitive and subtle for apt description are Antonioni's pictorial fashionings of a social atmosphere a rarefied intellectual climate a psychologically stultifying milieu-and his haunting evocations within them of individual symbolisms and displays of mental and emotional aberrations. Even boredom is made interesting. There is for instance a sequence in which a sudden downpour turns a listless garden party into a riot of foolish revelry exposing the lack of stimulation before nature takes a flagellating hand. Or there's a shot of the crumpled wife leaning against a glass wall looking out into the rain that tells in a flash of all her ennui desolation and despair."<br /> <br /> Set and shot on location in Milan.<br /> <br /> 9.25 x 7.5 inches. PURNELL'S HISTORY OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR
Purnell's History of the Second World War. Second Edition. Extended Set. Edited by Barrie Pitt. PURNELL'S SECOND EDITION: EXTENDED SET COMPLETE IN PUBLISHER'S BINDERS
Purnell in association with the Imperial War Museum 1970. 128 weekly parts in 8 vols. roy. 8vo. Second Edition profusely illustrated in colour and monochrome throughout; all original parts including original wrappers housed in black rexine binders blolcked in gilt a bright clean set. The considerably revised version of the original edition of 1966-1969. Purnell's mammoth endeavour is arguably the crowning achievement of the 'partwork' fashion of the late 60s. Produced in collaboration with the Imperial War Museum edited by Barrie Pitt and written by a host of eminent historians scholars and veterans the series is equally fortunate in having Liddell-Hart as editor-in-chief. Produced in 'magazine' format the work as a whole makes full use of its size and space to create a lucid vivid and valuable account of the conflict. The number choice and quality of the photographs illustrations and diagrams are worthy of special mention. The work was intended originally in six volumes ending with the Japanese surrender but as the series neared its conclusion it was decided to extend it to eight volumes to include the consequences of the conflict such as the birth of the nuclear era the foundation of the UN and so on. Technically the set is complete in the original six volumes complete with detailed index issued at that point; an additional cumulative index was issued for those subscribers who wished to continue collecting the extended set as here. COMPLETE SETS IN THIS FORMAT AND CONDITION ARE SCARCE. Purnell [in association with the Imperial War Museum], unknown

[PACIFISM] [MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR] WRIGHT, Henry C[larke]
Dick Crowninshield the Assassin and Zachary Taylor the Soldier. The Difference Between Them
N.p. n.d. Hopedale: 1848. 16mo 15cm. Sewn self-wrappers; 12pp. A worn copy stain on first leaf bleeds with diminishing effect through entire text; marginal loss to final leaf not costing text; still complete and Good. Issued without imprint but likely printed at Adin Ballou's Hopedale Community where Wright was a resident but see note below. Date of composition is given as Jan. 24 1848 at close of text; this pamphlet was likely printed soon after that date as Wright's sequel titled The Employers of Dick Crowninshield was composed in March of the same year and makes reference to the current work in its foreword. <br /> <br /> In typical Wright fashion a contrarian point of view - here radical non-resistance - is stretched to its logical limits by unflattering analogy. Wright the idiosyncratic radical abolitionist feminist pacifist freethinker and proto-anarchist compares Zachary Taylor's actions at the Battle of Monterey to nothing more than murder for hire building his analogy around the notorious 1830 murder of a Salem ship's-captain Joseph White by a paid assassin the Dick Crowninshield of the title. After laying out the details of each man's purported deeds including a quite lurid account of the Battle of Monterey Wright follows with a long list of "The Differences" between them concluding in the end that there is no difference in kind: ".The assassin killed a man whom he knew to be innocent; the soldier did the same. The assassin killed the innocent at the instigation of his employers; so did the soldier. The assasin entered into a contract with his employers voluntarily; so did the soldier." etc. In the end the only noteworthy difference is that "Zachary's deeds are said by the priests and churches to be God-approved and Christ-like; the assassin's are denounced by them as evil and only evil." <br /> <br /> At least three separate editions of the pamphlet were issued with priority likely as follows: 1 a Hopedale imprint issued with a full title page dated 1848 in which the title subject's name is misspelled "Crowningshield;" 2 the current edition undated issued with drop-title the subject's name corrected to "Crowninshield"; no imprint clearly from a different setting of type from the first - but based on close comparison with digital sources likely from the same font of type as the first hence our suggestion of Hopedale as the likely place of printing for this edition; 3 a stated Second Edition undated published in Edinburgh probably the same year. All editions are uncommon; 4 locations noted in OCLC for this edition. No copies traced in commerce. unknown

[MILITARIA] [CIVIL WAR] [Editor MILLER, Emily Van Dorn]
A Soldier's Honor By His Comrades
New York: The Abbey Press 1902. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo. 20cm. Bound in 20th century grey cloth by Meister and Smethie titled in black to spine and front board. 369pp. The later cloth binding is strong and functional clearly following the brief of holding the book together for a century without too much attention to aesthetics some light scuffing and edgewear perhaps a little discolouration here and there but constructed of the kind of book cloth that will outlast an earthquake. A very good copy by virtue of completeness and solidity. Internally clean albeit with a rather brutal stitching job to the text block which has resulted in the prelims being a little loose in the gutter. Inscribed in pencil to the front flyleaf by the editor who was also the bereaved sister of the book's subject Major General Earl Van Dorn of the Confederate Army:<br /> "From 'Aunt Emily' Vandorn to Constance Kearny Vertner"<br /> Constance Kearny Vertner's pencil ownership is also present on the front flyleaf she was indeed Emily's niece being the daughter of her elder sister Jane who married Senator John Vertner of Lexington Kentucky which is quite the collection of Southern aristocracy. <br /> The book itself was an attempt by Emily Van Dorn to salvage something of the reputation of her dead brother after his death at the hands of a man whose wife and possibly 15 year old daughter rumours abound he was said to be having an affair with. On the face of it Major General Van Dorn was an extremely gifted cavalry commander and a less gifted infantry officer who cut his teeth fighting the Cheyenne in the US Army and later ended up fighting the US Army distinguishing himself at 2nd Corinth the Raid on Holly Ridge and other engagements. The General's reputation for womanising however and his erratic military performance when commanding anything other than his beloved cavalry caused him to be a dangerous combination of lauded and highly suspect depending upon who you asked. His eventual death shot in the back of the head by Dr. George Peters of Tennessee was met with sadness and censure but little surprise. The customary thing to do at the time regarding a man killed whilst committing adultery was to express public disdain and condemnation whilst keeping one's true feelings private. Emily Van Dorn's published attempts at salvage made it quite clear that whilst his contemporaries and colleagues might have tutted in public the sympathies and memories they expressed to her and her family suggested otherwise. There was also the added suggestion that Dr. Peters acted on behalf of the Union and that he received a mysterious and substantial land grant in Arkansas in payment. Emily Van Dorn perhaps unsurprisingly held to this version of events. A scarce book in any condition and even more so with a family association. The Abbey Press unknown

[INDIA] [INDIAN MUTINY] [INDIAN WAR OF INDEPENDENCE] RAM, Sita, [LUNT, James (Editor)] [Illus: WILSON, Frank]
From Sepoy to Subedar Being the Life and Adventures of Subedar Sita Ram A Native Officer of the Bengal Army written and related by Himself
Delhi: Vikas Publishing 1970. First Thus. Octavo. 23.5cm. Publisher's orange cloth boards titled in black to spine. Dustjacket. 187pp. Strong and tight but visibly sunned to spine and edges of binding and a little bumped to the head of the spine. The priceclipped dustjacket is similarly sunned to the spine and has some light marginal wear but shows very well. A very good presentable copy. Internally clean with some annotation and emphasis to the text from an informed reader presumably Angus Thurmer. There is a 2 page letter from Major General Lunt dated January 1971 on Ministry of Defense notepaper to Angus Thurmer at the US Embassy in New Delhi discussing the book and the editing work and apprising Mr. Thurmer of his current status. Major General Lunt CBE had a prominent and successful career in the British Military spending a significant part of his career in India including a stint as Military Adviser to the High Commission there is a note on the title page to the effect that the book's attentive reader played Polo with Lunt whilst he was stationed in Delhi. The first edition of "From Sepoy to Subedar" was published in 1873 then languished forgotten for almost a century until Major General Lunt in his role as accomplished "Old India Hand" decided a new edition was called for. Primary source material for the period from native Indians is relatively thin on the ground spanning as it does Subedar Ram's memories of the Afghan Wars the first two the retreat from Khabul the subsequent trials and tribulations of a soldier's life and the post-"mutiny" changes to the leadership and administration of India and how badly that went. A fascinating account which should be ranked alongside "Confessions of a Thug" and Lady Florentia Sale's Journal as insights with all faults into the nature of life in and under the British Raj.
