COMMUNIST-NATIONALIST CIVIL WAR IN CHINA
Jiao fei yi nian "One Year Spent Suppressing the Bandits".
Guizhou: Junqu zhengzhi bu 1951. Military might. and terror First edition first printing of this internally circulated report on operations undertaken in Guizhou province by the People's Liberation Army. After Chiang Kai-Shek evacuated to Taiwan in early 1949 remnants of his forces in the south-west splintered into different bandit units and mounted a credible threat to the survival of Mao's regime. Of the 1000 copies issued none are located in institutions. In January 1949 Chiang ordered Guizhou's nationalist governor Gu Zhenglun to make the province the final bastion of anti-communist resistance on the mainland. Although Mao proclaimed the founding of a united People's Republic of China in October "the continuing civil war in southwest China pitted ethnic groups local power holders farmers and Nationalist troops against the PLA People's Liberation Army. The occupying army's initial strategy of a rapid military advance leniency and massive grain collection efforts was a recipe for resistance" Brown p. 119. In early 1950 communist cadres and troops withdrew from the majority of the province the party's political control in tatters but a combination of carrot allowing local people to keep more of their agricultural surplus and stick terror eventually brought Guizhou into line. A series of maps demonstrates the oscillating fortunes of anti-communist forces during 1950 Mao's forces being pushed back during the summer months but gaining the decisive upper hand later in the year. Other plans show the grand troop manoeuvres that turned the tide in Beijing's favour. Tables at the end list major battles the names of guerilla organizations and their leaders those leaders killed or captured in the field and those who surrendered. While dated 1950 on the title page the volume was not printed until May 1951. Second and third printings followed in June and July. Octavo. Half-tone portrait photographs of Chairman Mao and Commander-in-Chief Zhu De tipped onto decoratively embossed leaves with tissue guards 5 photographic halftones all with tissue guards showing Liu Bocheng He Long Deng Xiaoping Li Da and Zhang Jichun 15 facsimile calligraphic inscriptions 36 colour maps and battle plans 26 double-page 9 colour bar charts tables in text. Text in Chinese. Original brown cloth spine and front cover lettered in gilt illustrated endpapers green and pink silk bookmarker. Ex-military library with accession stamps on the front free endpaper and title page record card holder on the rear pastedown and "confidential" stamp on the title page; contemporary red pencil marginalia. Extremities rubbed and bumped couple of tips consolidated contents toned as consistent with paper from this period maps plans and graphs well preserved: a very good copy.
O autor censura a deturpação do ideal cristão primitivo o fanatismo religioso o ritualismo oco o jesuitismo as superstições obscurantistas e o Vaticano.
SACO MA503-08 hardcover

[WORLD WAR II] [GERMANY] TUCHOLSKY, Kurt (text); HEARTFIELD, John (design)
Deutschland Deutschland Ueber Alles
Berlin: Neuer Deutscher Verlag 1929. First German Edition. First Printing cloth issue with 1.-20. Tausend printed on title page. Octavo 24cm; yellow decorative cloth with photomontage by John Heartfield applied to covers and titles stamped in black on spine; yellow topstain; 231pp 5; illus; text is in German. Contemporary October 1929 owner's name penciled to front endpaper; slight forward lean light overall dust-soil to cloth with pictorial elements well-preserved and largely unrubbed; browning to endpapers with mild wear to base of spine; a presentable copy Very Good lacking the rare dustjacket. A powerful piece of social criticism by Tucholsky one of the most prominent German-Jewish authors and journalists of the Weimar Republic. Produced with graphic designer John Heartfield Tucholsky managed to combine vicious attacks on everything he disliked about Germany with a declaration of love for his country. He warned of a government with anti-democratic tendencies and the impending threat of National Socialism - a plea almost to revolutionize a dormant country - though his fears were realized in 1933 when Hitler assumed the position of Chancellor of Germany. Axel Eggebrecht one of Tucholsky's contemporaries said of Deutschland: "If this book were to turn out to be quite a big success it might be realized that the dream of awakening is still very vivid in Germany." Deutschland was listed on the Nazis list of censored books and though it did go through a second printing few enough survived destruction.

The present example is one of apparently two variant bindings for the first printing with no extablished priority known to us. While the pictorial cloth binding is the variant we have seen and handled most often we note another in yellow cloth without the pictorial elements and titles stamped in black on spine and front cover. A well-preserved example and a high-point of Heartfield's graphic design and layout work. Pachnicke & Honnef 60a-69 p.148-161. Neuer Deutscher Verlag unknown

[WOMEN'S HISTORY & LITERATURE] [WORLD WAR II]
To The Anti-Fascist Women of The DobriÄko Region
Prokuplje: Prekomurac Printing House October 1945. 40cm x 30cm. Single sheet of newsprint style paper printed recto only with a printer's error to the bottom right corner where the paper has been folded over as it entered the press so a fragment of the text is printed in error to the verso. Some trifling toning to the edges otherwise a very good example indeed and an almost miraculous survival.

Simultaneously a call to action a plea for political support and a memorial to the great deeds of the women of the DobriÄ Province during WW2 distributed by the People's Front Party and the Anti-Fascist Women's Front of what would become the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia;

"Mothers Wives Sisters and the Many Great Sons and Daughters of the Good Men who are Missed!" would be an approximate translation of the sub-heading.

The main body of text printed in cyrillic goes on to list the wartime exploits of these women and less specifically their men; "We will never forget the sacrifice of the women from Dobrich who went day and night summer and winter throught the mountains and valleys of our region and brought our famous partisans clothes food ammuniotion and information. The ferocious occupier and his informants our home-grown traitors knew of these deeds and that is why they persecuted you women in particular. But neither prisons nor beatings nor camps nor shootings nor the burning of your houses truly swayed you from the right path for the good of The People."

The text goes on to detail the immmediate post war collective efforts of these women; caring for the wounded adopting orphaned children and helping with the provincial administration both for the living and the dead. These actions it is maintained strengthened the People's Front to the point where it has become the only clear choice for the future of the region; the women of "Fighting DobriÄ" therefore must ensure their vote in the upcoming elections is cast for the People's Front so as to "elect worthy sons of the people as our representatives in the Constituent Assembly."
The dense and rather understandably enthused broadsheet concludes with the patriotic cheer:

"Long Live The People's Front!
Long Live the First Free Elections in Our Country!
Long Live Women's Rights and Freedoms!
Long Live the Frontline Soldiers of the DobriÄki Section!
Long Live Our Candidates!
Long Live The Anti-Fascist Women's Front of Yugoslavia!"

A courageous and uncompromising piece of antifascist ephemera from a region that was subject to a brutal Wehrmacht campaign assisted by local Chetnik collaborators and the Ustaše forces that was rightfully regarded as genocidal ethnic cleansing in post-war analyses. The Yugoslav Partisans however refused to capitulate and supported by an increasingly decimated local population fought relentlessly until the collapse of the Reich before victoriously proclaiming the foundation of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. No examples of this piece appear in OCLC and no trace can be found of its distribution in the public record. Prekomurac Printing House unknown

[NUCLEAR WAR] KAHN, Herman
On Thermonuclear War
Princeton New Jersey: Princeton University Press 1960. First Edition. Octavo. 24cm. Publisher's terracotta cloth titled and ruled in black and gilt to spine. Dustjacket. xx; 651pp. Very light wear and bumping to spine ends and extremities strong and bright; internally clean and fresh; in a grey dustjacket with some minor edgewear and shallow chipping to the spine ends and edges a hint of toning to the spine panel and some light soiling and wear to the white rear panel. A very good handsome copy indeed.

Kahn's deeply influential analysis of the spectre of thermonuclear war partly intended as a counterpoint to von Neumann's apocalyptic concept of MAD or Mutually Assured Destruction. Kahn posits the strategic possibility of a 'winnable' nuclear conflict questions the solidity of a peace structure based on thermonuclear threat and makes the highly controversial for the time suggestion that the spectre of thermonuclear conflict itself isn't actually that terrifying and that the spectre of it is really what most people get worked up about. Kahn is an analytical strategist his conclusions are based in a zone in which emotion only plays the smallest part and upon publication the book elicited some powerful reactions from readers uncomfortable with the potential at the time inevitable deaths of millions being presented in the form of graphs and calm inexorable strategic detachment. Hubert Humphrey's contemporary review of the work stated "New thoughts particularly those which contradict current assumptions are always painful for the human mind to contemplate. On Thermonuclear War is filled with such thoughts."

Perhaps as inevitable antidote to the grimly sardonic nature of his analysis Kahn's work earned him a place in the eternal halls of pop culture being the impromptu scriptwriter for the character of General Buck Turgidson in "Dr. Strangelove" and with popular understanding of his theories featuring prominently in fiction from Tom Clancy to "Wargames." Kahn is also credited with the coining of the phrases "Megadeath" as a unit of fatality and "Wargasm" describing the focus of the military personnel he worked with both of which have seeped into common usage. Kahn's borderline crude delivery combining horrifying statistics with jokes about how women will come to love their two-headed babies was deliberately jarring and intended to be equally disruptive to those locked in fearful uninformed paralysis and those working towards the wargasm. The reception of his book was one of the catalyzing elements that led Kahn to be a co-founder of The Hudson Institute after his work at RAND reached its inevitable close. Regardless of how divisive Kahn was both in theory and delivery "On Thermonuclear War" ranks as one of the most important 20th century works of strategic analysis right down to the title being an updated and expanded nod to von Clausewitz's "On War. Purnell's History of the Second World War. First Edition. Extended Set. Edited by Barrie Pitt. PURNELL'S FIRST EDITION: EXTENDED SET COMPLETE WITH MAP AND CHARTS
Purnell in association with the Imperial War Museum 1966-69. 128 parts in 8 vols. roy. 8vo. First Edition profusely illustrated in colour and monochrome throughout; all original parts less wrappers as intended housed in publisher's branded black rexine binders blocked in gilt a near fine set. COMPLETE WITH THE SEPARATELY PRINTED FOLDING MAP AND CHARTS ISSUED AS LOOSE INSERTS WITH VOLUMES ONE AND SEVEN AND WHICH ARE ALMOST INVARIABLY MISSING. Purnell's mammoth endeavour is arguably the crowning achievement of the 'partwork' fashion of the late 60s. Produced in collaboration with the Imperial War Museum edited by Barrie Pitt and written by a host of eminent historians scholars and veterans the series is equally fortunate in having Liddell-Hart as editor-in-chief. Produced in 'magazine' format the work as a whole makes full use of its size and space to create a lucid vivid and valuable account of the conflict. The number choice and quality of the photographs illustrations and diagrams are worthy of special mention. The work was intended originally in six volumes ending with the Japanese surrender but as the series neared its conclusion it was decided to extend it to eight volumes to include the consequences of the conflict such as the birth of the nuclear era the foundation of the UN and so on. Technically the set is complete in the original six volumes complete with detailed index issued at that point; an additional cumulative index was issued for those subscribers who wished to continue collecting the extended set as here. The series as a whole was reissued with considerable revision in 1970-72. Please note that additional postage will be required for shipping outside the UK. [Prisoners of War]. ANDERSON, R and D WESTMACOTT
Handle with Care. A Book of Prison Camp Sketches drawn & written in Prison Camps in Germany
Cookham: The Authors 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Cookham The Authors 1946. Oblong quarto 107 pages with numerous illustrations. Grey cloth lettered in red on the front cover; cloth a little unevenly sunned and lightly foxed; foot of the spine lightly bumped throughout; a very good copy. The two-page introduction by the authors dated 'Cookham 1946' outlines the chequered history of the book not least the difficulties in getting it printed on their return from captivity. We 'spent two months searching a somewhat changed England for a publisher with enough good paper for the Book. Having discovered one we found that the printing trade was so short of man-power particularly block-makers and book-binders that our book had to take its turn in a long queue and that our original estimate of the time required to produce it was far too optimistic. We therefore apologise for the long delay and hope that you will receive your copy with as much pleasure as we see the last of it. We should like to take this opportunity of apologising to the many subscribers who sent messages of goodwill for not replying to them'.
An online search brought up further interesting information: all other copies we found for sale were bound in blue cloth with red lettering; one of them was still in its original packaging from the printer P.J. Press 34 Fort Road Middlesex; and a facsimile edition was published in 2005 variously signed by one or more former prisoners of war. The Authors hardcover

Red Desert Il deserto rosso Original oversize photograph of Monica Vitti on the set of the 1964 film
N.p.: N.p. 1964. Vintage oversize borderless reference photograph from the 1964 film showing actress Monica Vitti with Michelangelo Antonioni and Richard Harris during filming on location near a body of water.

Antonioni's first color film and the last in a quartet of films made between 1959 and 1964 about women in modern culture preceded by "L'avventura" "La Notte" and L'Eclisse" and the lie of happiness and better living. This entry very much an antecedent to Todd Haynes' "Safe" 1995 focuses on Vitti a woman trying to survive in the modern world of cultural neurosis and existential doubt. Carlo Di Palma's cinematography remains legendary today for its stunningly colored industrial landscapes beautifully and yet indirectly evoking Vitti's unease alienation and vivid perceptions.

Shot on location in Ravenna Sardinia and Rome Italy.

12 x 9 inches.
