New Jersey and the Civil War An Album of Contemporary Accounts
Princeton New Jersey:: D. Van Nostrand Company 1964. A clean square tight copy. The Dust Jacket is bright and shiny. NO owner's name or bookplate. NO remainder mark. Bound in the original blue boards lettered in shiny gold on the spine and front cover. Small bruise to edge of rear board. Pages are clean and crisp. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Endpaper maps. Four plates. This volume collects 31 first-hand accounts written by New Jerseyans who participated in the Civil War. Edited with Introductions by Miers. Volume 2 in THE NEW JERSEY HISTORICAL SERIES. From the Dust Jacket: "These eye-witness testimonies recapture the emotions and motivations of a century ago as a wide variety of people relate incidents from those tragic years. Included are accounts by the President of the United States two governors generals and men in the ranks poets and reporters a chaplain a disgruntled inventor angry politicians a distinguished foreign minister a defeated presidential candidate a Confederate officer and others who were patriots or near-traitors
The story begins on February 21 186 when President-elect Lincoln in a seven hour visit to the state acquaints 'Jerseymen' with the course he will have to take if the secessionists push him too far. Seven weeks later the echo of a mortar rolled across Charleston Harbor; and the war no sane person wanted became a reality. New Jerseyans reacted patriotically to the President's call to arms with 'the sternest determination to sustain and reestablish the honor of the country.' The state supplied 40 regiments of infantry 3 regiments of cavalry and 5 batteries of light artillery which saw action on every major battlefield of the conflict. More than 6000 loyal citizens lost their lives." . First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Very Good condition./VG DJ price clipped. 8vo. xiv 135pp. D. Van Nostrand Company Hardcover

THE INVASION BEFORE NORMANDY: The Secret Battle of Slapton Sands
London: Robert Hale 1988. Shortly before D-Day in 1944 a rehearsal exercise took place in Devon on a beach resembling Utah Beach. James Barbour; Adjutant General Department of War
Desertions From The Army. Letter From the Secretary of War Transmitting A further Report from the Adjutant General in Relation to Desertions from the Army of the U. States. March 29 1826. 19th Congress 1st Session. House of Representative War Department. Doc. No. 140. 1826
Complete document: 2 leaves and a large 29 inches fold out chart. Published by Congress 1826. Document is heavily foxed but complete; if trimmed it would look much better but that is an aesthetic choice not a collectible one. This chart does not open all the way because the corner is folded into the binding; it could be cut open judiciously but again that is a choice for the next owner to make. The chart is a detailed examination of deserters and the dead. Analyzed by nationality state of origin age occupation and more. A very cool and very scarce document. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Gales and Seaton

<p>Remarkable survivors: these two volumes in about AS NEW CONDITION. They are in this exceptional state because they were rebound by a library in hard red library binding with brilliant white titling etc on spine. The binding has inluded brilliant white end pages plus the pasted in "lending record' which shows the books were never borrowd then the title page with small library stamp and manuscript call number and the same repeated on the dedication page. Book one has a fold out map of the western front that is in perfect mint condition and page after page of the unit badges of British units in which staff served Canadian Corps badges and even badges of US units in which staff served. And many other illustrations. Lt de Wind V.C. for example. Vol II has a frontispiece protected by a tissue in perfect condition. The books look and feel new and never opened never read but because of the provenance I cannot list as new or as new. Tables of who served in what units tables of decorations. And a full swathe of photographs of staff who enlisted. These books are an absolute treasure. Slight stickiness where labels were probably removed-and I assume that stickiness will lift off.
