From the Dust Jacket: "The Civil War prison camp at Elmira New York opened July 6 1864 and closed on July 11 1865. During its single yesr of existence 12 123 Confederate prisoners of war passed through its gates. Hauntingly nearly 3000 of them died during their incarceration. Elmira's death rate was the highest of any prison camp in the North -- almost 25 percent. Comparatively the overall death rate of all prison camps in the North was just over 11 percent; in the South it was just over 15 percent. Clearly something went wrong in Elmira. The culmination of ten years of research this book follows the gross oversights and unconscionable inactivity of the Union prison's staff. and places the prison in the context of the greater Elmira community." No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Bound in the original two-tone black cloth. Illustrated with 3 maps and 13 pages of photos including a frontispiece portrait of the author in 1946. Bibliography. From the Dust Jacket: "The 'All Americans' of the 82d Airborne Division participated in some of the toughest fighting of World War II. As a teenager John McKenzie joined the division shortly before the Normandy Invasion. He was one of many green unblooded replacements drawn from the holding depots in England to help fill out the 82d's ranks which had been badly depleted by their losses in Sicily and Italy. It didn't take long for McKenzie to turn into a hardened combat veteran as the paratroopers were used as shock troops leading the way in Allied attempts to break out of the hedgerow country of Normandy. Finally after being withdrawn from combat in mid-July 1944 McKenzie and his fellow paratroopers were next called on to air-assault into Holland as part of Field Marshal Montgomery's ill-fated Operation Market Garden immortalized in the Cornelius Ryan book A BRIDGE TOO FAR. In mid-November the 82d was finally relieved from the frontlines after two months of virtually continuous combat. Their respite proved short-lived as Allied strategic planning was thrown into chaos by the massive mid-December Nazi counterattack that became known as the Battle of the Bulge." keywords: Military history. Flat spine. No creases. Fresh and crisp obviously never read. Well-illustrated with vintage photos line drawings and technical drawings of weapons and equipment. Appendix: Patents Table. Sources/Bibliography. Index. From the rear cover: "Before 1914 trench warfare was a kind of fighting unforeseen by the armies of Britain France and Germany so none was equipped to fight it. Specialized weapons and equipment were needed for the violent environment of the trenches and these had to be developed and introduced as quickly as possible. In Britain a plethora of 'inventions' departments sprung up to address the problem. Hand and rifle grenades as well as trench mortars emerged as potent trench weapons. Such weapons had a fundamental impact on the conduct of the fighting in the trenches. Anthony Saunders looks at innovation in the trenches principally from the British viewpoint but also describes equipment used by other combatants. He includes weapons and associated equipment designed to overcome the problems of warfare at trench level and examines some of the unsuccessful ideas that never made it to the Front. Supported by a wealth of contemporary photographs and drawings the result is a detailed and authoritative insight into the harsh realities of the First World War.". First Paperback Edition. From the Dust Jacket: "The acclaimed author of the BRETHREN OF THE COAST trilogy revisits one of the great American naval battles and a turning point in our history -- the first major work on the subject in thirty-five years. The first ironclad ships to fight each other the 'Monitor' and the 'Virginia' Merrimack were unique products of American design genius and ingenuity North and South. In one afternoon in a battle that lasted four hours they ended the three-thousand year tradition of wooden men-of-war and ushered in as Admiral John A. Dahlgren called it 'the reign of iron.' In this absorbing history novelist historian and tall-ship sailor James L. Nelson through in-depth research and a storyteller's voice brilliantly recounts the story of these magnificent ships the men who built and fought them and the extraordinary battle that made them legend." ‎Soldiers and Slaves American POWs Trapped by the Nazis' Final Gamble‎

No highlighting. No margin notes. Illustrated with 16 pages of photos. List of chapter notes/sources. Roster of 350 Berga prisoners. Index. From the Dust Jacket: "This book makes available for the first time in English a large selection from the writings of one of the most remarkable figures of the Russian revolution. Alexandra Kollontai -- the only woman member of the Bolshevik central committee and the USSR's first Minister of Social Welfare… This volume gives a presentation of how her ideas developed in articles speeches diaries works of fiction excerpts from full-length books." Bound in the original black boards lettered in shiny gold on the spine. From the Dust Jacket: "In February 1945 350 American POWs captured earlier at the Battle of the Bulge or elsewhere in Europe were singled out by the Nazis because they were Jews or were thought to resemble Jews. They were transported in cattle cars to Berga a concentration camp in eastern Germany and put to work as slave laborers mining tunnels for a planned underground synthetic-fuel factory. This was the only incident of its kind during World War II. Starved and brutalized the GIs were denied their rights as prisoners of war their ordeal culminating in a death march that was halted by liberation near the Czech border. Twenty percent of these soldiers -- more than seventy of them -- perished. This is the story of hell in a small place over a period of ten weeks at a time when Hitler's Reich was crumbling but its killing machine still churned. It is a tale of madness and heroism and of the failure to deliver justice for what the Nazis did to these Americans. Roger Cohen uncovers exactly why the U.S. government did not aggressively prosecute the commandants of Berga why there was no particular recognition for the POWs in the postwar years and their harsh treatment in the postwar years and why it took decades for them to receive compensation."
