Arguably the scarcest of all the SOE personal memoirs. Fielding 1918-1991 was one of the first SOE agents with Paddy Leigh Fermor and Dick Barnes to be landed in Crete where he spent two years or so in a precarious game of hide and seek with the occupying Germans. Arrested in France later in the war he was saved from execution by the Polish SOE agent Krystyna Skarbek. In post-war years a close friend of Lawrence Durrell Fielding developed a career as writer and translator achieving acclaim for his translation of 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. EXTREMELY SCARCE. Written by pacifist Richard Grelling this is a scathing attack upon the political and military leadership of Germany that led to the outbreak of WWI. Grelling takes his title from the infamous Zola letter of the Dreyfus scandal some two decades previously. A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO MAJOR-GENERAL SIR GEORGE JEFFREYS WITH THE FORMER'S SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON HALF-TITLE. Major-General Sir George Jeffreys 1878-1960 was commissioned in the Grenadier Guards in 1897. He served at the Nile in the Second Boer War and extensively throughout WWI. Mentioned in despatches several times he commanded 2Bn in 1915 subsequently 58th Brigade 57th Brigade and finally 1st Guards Brigade in 1916. In 1917 he was appointed GOC 19th Division. Post-war he served as GOC Light Division British Army of the Rhine and as GOCiC of Southern Command in India before his retirement in 1938. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Jeffreys in 1952. His association with the present work stems from his position as Deputy Lieutenant of the county of Hampshire Chairman of the Hampshire Territorial Army Association and a decade or so as MP for Petersfield. With a small quanitity of relevant cuttings loosely inserted. The second dedicated history of the regiment following the anonymous account of 1828. The plates comprise one of colours and two of uniform 1713 and 1866. Carter was Cannon's assistant in the compilation of the latter's well-known 'Historical Records' series. At Cannon's retirement Carter was considered as editor but the Treasury elected to discontinue the series and Carter therefore published this work independently. Unsold copies were reissued in 1883 with an additional eight pages titled 'Conclusion of the Historical Record' and 24 coloured plates of uniform by Simkin. An SOE classic. Odette Churchill nee Sansom was one of the most famous SOE agents of WWII. Operating under the code-name 'Lise' she dropped into occupied France where she was eventually captured imprisoned and tortured first at Fresnes and finally at Ravensbruck. One of the few FANY agents to survive the war she was awarded the George Cross for gallantry and subsequently married fellow-SOE agent Captain Peter Churchill 'Raoul'. Foot p.463 describes this account as 'a popular and partly fictionalised life; accurate in parts'. Certainly it is one of the half-dozen or so key works relating to SOE agents in France and the basis of Herbert Wilcox's feature film 1950 starring Anna Neagle and Trevor Howard. Also known as the War of Jenkins' Ear after the conflict's flashpoint it related to Great Britain's exclusive right granted by the Treaty of Utrecht at the end of the War of the Spanish Succession 1713 to ply the slave trade and sell other goods in Spain's American colonies. This war was eventually subsumed into the War of the Austrian Succession 1742-1748.
