‎A Letter to a Friend in Suffolk, Occasion'd by a Report of Repealing the Triennial Act.‎

‎22pp., with half-title, disbound. Sometimes attributed to Daniel Defoe but not in Moore. The Triennial Act, reluctantly agreed to by Charles I (who said it reduced his sovereign powers), which stated that there had to be a parliament of at least 50 days duration every three years. It was designed to prevent a repetition of the long absences of parliament seen in the '11 Year Tyranny' of 1629-1640.‎

The author, an ardent Anglican Tory, satirized the non-conformists (Presbyterians, Anabaptists, Antinomians, Brownists, Adamites, Chiliasts, Quakers, Muggletonians, and Independents) and accused them of plotting rebellion against the King." ‎First edition, 4to, [6], 75, [1]pp., without the initial imprimatur leaf, running title on last leaf cropped ( one or two others just shaved), cut close on some lower margins with the occasional loss of a catchword, recent quarter calf, marbled boards. Details the damages which the English East India Company had sustained by the East India Company of the United Provinces that includes the capture of over 30 ships on the coast of America, including their cargoes, and the burning down of the English Factory of Cape-Corse, claimed by the English and Dutch East India Companies, the English Turkey-Company, &c, followed by a rebuttal of the Dutch demands. A large part of the work relates to transgressions in the West Indies. There is also a section dealing with fishing rights off the Greenland coast. In the 'Editor's Preface to the German and French Editions,' Frederick the Great's strategic prowess as displayed in these Instructions is described thus: "Here Frederic [sic] fully displays the art, by which he was so constantly victorious:?the manner of misleading the Enemy respecting the real point of attack?even the art of rapidly passing from the defensive to the offensive state, keeping in view all the chances of success. By these principles, peculiarly his own, he was enabled often to accomplish great actions with small comparative means."‎

‎PORZIO (Luca Antonio)‎

‎The Soldier's Vade Mecum: or, the Method of Curing the Diseases and Preserving the Health of Soldiers, I. In Camps. II. In Garrisons. III. During Marches. IV. In all the different Countries of Europe. Translated from the Latin of L. A. Portius. Illustrated with Cuts. To which is added, a treatise on the same subject, translated from Frederic Hoffman, Professor of Physic at Hall in Saxony. Also An Essay on the Diseases of Sailors.‎

‎First and only English edition, 12mo (170 x 115 mm), [2], x, 264pp., with half-title, 3 folding engraved plates, a clean copy with minimal browning, new endpapers, later full calf, retaining the original morocco label to spine. Luca Antonio Porzio (1639-1724), chief professor of medicine and anatomy in the Royal University of Naples. The English translation of Porzio's De Militis in castris sanitate tuenda, first published in Vienna in 1685 in Latin. It was published as a direct result of Porzio's presence in Venice in 1683 when the forces of the Ottoman Empire were laying siege to Vienna. The health of sailors is a short section, but on page 236 the author recommends keeping root vegetables in sand and fruit as juice "I am very certain, that the juices of fruits, as Oranges, Lemons, and Apples, might be boil'd to the consistence of a thick syrup or Rob, and preserved in proper vessels for any given times, so that a spoonful or more of it might occasionally be taken, dissolved in water, with very good effect, as a preservative against the bad consequences of such an animal diet as I have above taken notice of." Rare; ESTC locates 3 copies in the UK (BL; Durham; Wellcome) and 3 further copies in North America (Society of Cincinnati; National Library of Medicine; University of Illinois).‎
