‎[Texas]: [Mexican-American War]‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed by Frank Boggs a Mexican-American War Soldier Written to His Sister Sophia Boggs in Ohio Describing His Route Through Texas‎

‎Near Milam Tx 1846. 1p. with integral blank leaf addressed on verso. Original mailing folds repairs to address leaf and small unobtrusive loss from removed wax seal. Text clean and highly readable. Very good. A rare communication from Texas during the Mexican-American War in which an Ohio Army soldier describes his march through Texas. Boggs writes as follows: "We arrived here last night about 9 o'clock. We crossed the Sabine River at Sabine town and traveled 5 miles in the dark. If you look at the map you can see our route. We came through Trinity and Alexandria and are now 5 miles into Texas. We will sleep tonight at Saint Augustine 20 miles from this place. Biddle is ahead of us. I have not seen him but he is well and getting on very well. He will get $100 per month. He has done better than most other captains. We will get to San Antonio about October and will expect to find some letters from you and those at home." Captain Charles John Biddle served as a captain in the Mexican-American War before serving as a lieutenant colonel for the Union in the Civil War. Biddle was also a prominent lawyer politician and newspaper editor in Philadelphia. unknown‎

‎[Native Americans]: [World War II]‎

‎Propaganda Poster Encouraging Native American Support for the War Effort Through the Purchase of War Bonds Produced by Three Native American Artists Attending the U.S. Indian School in Santa Fe‎

‎Washington DC: Government Printing Office 1942. Very good. Color lithographed poster 24 x 38 inches. Old folds light wear minor soiling. Three patriotic propaganda posters on a single sheet produced to encourage the purchase of war bonds during the Second World War featuring Native American themes and created by Native American students. Dotted trim lines are printed and labeled around each of the three posters which were designed to be cut out separately. The top left poster shows a Native American warrior sending up a smoke signal which reads out "BUY WAR BONDS!" The upper right shows a native warrior with a tomahawk juxtaposed against two P-40 "Warhawk" or "Tomahawk" fighter planes under a title reading "MORE TOMAHAWKS for OUR UNITED WARRIORS" and encouraging the purchase of war bonds. The poster at bottom shows three Native American children and their pinto-patterned horse bringing their savings to an adobe-style post office which is decorated with a poster encouraging patrons to buy war bonds.

The illustrated posters are supplemented with patriotic text at top which reads in part: "The three posters on this page were made by boys who see America as the home their people have had always. They share it with us now and they see the war as their fight - to be fought with their ancient courage and cunning but by modern methods.Ben Quintana Ha-aTee and Eva Mirabal Eah-Ha-Wa who painted the smoke-signal poster and Charles Presbetonesqua who painted the 'Tomahawk' poster are all students at the United States Indian School in Santa Fe New Mexico."

Harder to find than most other propaganda posters related to the Second World War with only a dozen institutional holdings. ‎[Civil War]: [Texas]: [Law]: McGinnis, AD A D‎

‎Manuscript Document Involving a Writ of Habeas Corpus in Late-Confederate Texas‎

‎March 14 1865. Very good. 2pp. on a folio sheet. Old folds some abrading in the margins minor edge wear. A Confederate Texas legal document in which Judge A.D. McGinnis of the "2nd Judicial District" orders those parties holding William L. Carter to report to court for a hearing on a matter "on a writ of habeas corpus." A month before the end of the Civil War Carter alleges that he was "illegally restrained in his liberty" by Lt. Robert Burton of "Alexander Cowan's Company of the Reserve Corps of Caldwell County of the Confederate States of America." Judge McGinnis states that Carter is now apparently being held by another officer of Cowan's Company and orders that said officer "is hereby commanded to produce the person of said Carter before the district court of said county.and there to show cause why he is held in custody and under restraint." Confederate habeas corpus documents are quite uncommon in the market. March 14 unknown‎

‎[Border War]: Fuson, Merritt H‎

‎Souvenir. A Rabid Rookie's Rhymes. The Experiences Opinions and Imaginations of a Nebraska Rookie on the Mexican Border wrapper title‎

‎N.p. possibly Brownsville Tx 1916. Very good. 111pp. Original tan printed wrappers stapled. Wrappers soiled partially split along spine penciled ownership signature on front cover. Light creasing occasional minor foxing to text. An unrecorded collection of poetry by First Sergeant Merritt H. Fuson of the 5th Nebraska Infantry capturing military life during the U.S.-Mexico Border War in 1916-1917. Sergeant Fuson's poems begin with "A Rookie's Prayer" and generally describe the incessant drilling and preparations for battle in southern Texas. One of the poems was given to Fuson before he left home and one other poem is credited to a "Minnesota artilleryman name unknown" but the remainder of the poems appear to be authored by Fuson himself. Fuson's poem "War Is Hell" particularly encapsulates the difficulties of military camp life during his service but does not capture the horrors of war which Fuson apparently never experienced. Fuson does express his desire to return home to Nebraska in at least two poems and his homesickness comes through in others in passages such as "Sing a song of Texas Drill and sweat and dig One Nebraska soldier Dirty as a pig." The 5th Nebraska Infantry had a short and uneventful stay in Llano Grande outside Mercedes in the McAllen-Brownsville region of south Texas. They arrived in July 1916 and drilled and camped until returning to Nebraska in February 1917. An interesting collection of wartime poetry by a young Nebraska man serving in the Texas-Mexico borderlands. No copies in OCLC auction records or any other sources we consulted. unknown‎

‎[Civil War]. [Alabama]‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed from a Soldier to Miss Lizzie Frazee Back Home‎

‎Brownsville Al: April 20 1864. Very good. 4pp. Quarto. Old folds light wear and soiling. In a legible hand. With original envelope. A letter written by a Union soldier stationed in Alabama to a friend back home in Missouri. Signed only as "Jo" the letter is quite familiar and written to Elizabeth Frazee of Alexandria Missouri. There is some initial mention of "Capt. Frazee" whom we presume to be Morris Frazee Elizabeth's brother who was in the 10th Missouri Infantry. The author writes of a longing for home and a good drink being stationed in a dry county. "Our Col. arrived some few days ago but brings us but very little news and no hope of being mustered out until August. I did think that we would be out in July but I guess it is played out but will still hope. I would like to stay until June and then go north. Every thing down here looks bright flowers are in abundance and the trees look quite green. and if the rebs don't bother us any we will not harm them. All we dread now is a forward movement which I expect we will have to join but there is no use of lamenting untill the time comes. We have had no alarms lately but are wishing for one or two so as to make it appear that there is some danger in leaving this place unguarded. Our brigade could not be of much force at present no how for the regiments are so scattered one in Huntsville one home on furlough and the two others ten miles apart and the one at Huntsville leaves for home soon as they can be mustered as veterans." He goes on to mention empty liquor bottles stashed at home writing "I wish the bottle was full and I had it here this evening. I think I could enjoy it hugely for this is a great temperance country the reason for it is that Uncle Sam has stopped the sale of it so you see it is a dry season with us at this time but we expect to make up for this when we get home or at St. Louis." He continues with personal news and some flirtatious talk including about kissing and sending her his photograph. April 20 unknown‎

‎[Civil War]: [Texas]: Gallatin, Samuel‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed by a Confederate Soldier Stationed at Brownsville an Outpost He Describes as "One of the Last Places in the World to Get News of Any Kind"‎

‎Brownsville TX: April 4 1863. 2pp. Old mailing folds moderate foxing and toning. Overall about very good. An interesting letter from Samuel Gallatin a Confederate soldier stationed in far south Texas during the middle of the Civil War. Gallatin writes that there is not much going on but his categorization of Brownsville and his brief discussion of the value of money provide important details of a soldier's life on the Gulf of Mexico during the war. The text of his letter in full is as follows with spelling corrected:

"It is with much pleasure that I seat myself to answer your kind letter which I received a few days ago. I was truly glad to hear that you all was well and doing well. Me and Milam are both well hoping when you receive this it will find you all enjoying the same blessing. All the boys are well that bears your acquaintance. I have nothing to write that would interest you much. We are just laying around Camp not doing much of anything. There is no prospects of us having any fighting to do soon. The Yankee transport boats have all left the mouth of the Rio Grande. The weather is very warm and for that reason I think will be some healthier than it has been. We get plenty to eat and wear such as it is though we will not grumble.

Ed Pace received a letter from his father the other day. He stated that Albert was sick but was not dangerous. There is a great deal of talk about peace being made pretty soon in this country but I expect that has got to be a by word with you all down there. We are in one of the last places in the world to get news of any kind and would be glad that you would write oftener and let us know what all is going on down there. Money is tolerably plenty in this country. Paper money is only worth twenty to thirty cents on the dollar. With silver or gold we can get things as cheap as we used to or near about it. ‎[THE GREAT TURKISH WAR].‎

‎Bordeaux: Pierre Abegou 1687. Marbled wrappers. 4to. With an inserted latter engraved frontispiece portrait of the Polish King Jan III Sobieski engraved by F. Jollain. Very rare pamphlet published during the European wars against Turkey with a frontispiece portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor Léopold I 1640-1705 Archduke of Austria and King of Bohemia and Hungary. He succeeded his father Ferdinand III in 1657 and immediately had to fight against the Turks in the Great Turkish War also known as the War of the Holy League 1683-1699. This war finally led to the Peace of Karlowitz in 1699.This work gives directions and arrangements for ritual processions that the Turkish Sultan Suleiman III ordered after his victories during the so-called Holy Wars against the Christians. It is of great importance for our understanding of the problematic Turkish-European relations during the 17th century especially as an interesting example of counter-propaganda. One of Suleiman III’s directions presented in the book for example ordered that one Christian slave or one Jew was to be killed every fifteen minutes as part of the procession. One can imagine the reaction of a Christian reading this text: although the crusades were over this could provoke war and violence between the parties.Wrappers worn and somewhat frayed a few worm holes but still in good condition.l Bibliotheca bibliographica Aureliana CX XVIIe siècle XIV Bordeaux 2176 not mentioning the portrait; cf. Set in fraktur types with incidental schwabacher. Rare second or third edition of the German translation of an anti-Alva anti-Spain pamphlet written by the nobility of Holland and representatives of its cities addressed to the States in Dutch “Staten” the provincial governments of and all magistrates in the seventeen provinces of the Low Countries promulgated at Delft on 12 September 1573 as noted at the end of the text but not printed even in the original Dutch before 2 October 1573 when William the Silent Prince of Orange wrote to his brothers that the pamphlet was being printed Groen van Prinsteren. That is just before Alva was dismissed on 19 October and left the country on 18 December 1573. The text was first published in Dutch: Delft Aelbrecht Hendricksz. ‎Fort Ellis NC near New Bern 1862. Oblong folio broadsheet uniformly tanned. 12-3/4" x 18-1/2." Printed with manuscript additions. Signed in ink by J.M. Mayo Commanding Company. Contemporary "Duplicate." A few pinholes at fold intersections not affecting text Very Good.

Most spaces available for the requested detailed information are left blank. Numbers of enlisted and commissioned officers present and absent are listed with notations of "alterations since last monthly return." 122 men were present for duty at the post. George L. Medlin was "furloughed for sickness." Captain Mayo is the only commissioned officer listed as "present." The return was completed about six weeks before the Battle of New Bern
James Micajah Mayo "studied law at the University of Virginia in 1859 and 1860. In October of 1861 following the outbreak of the Civil War he was appointed to the rank of Captain in the Confederate States Army and organized the North Carolina 2nd Artillery Regiment Company F AKA North Carolina 36th regiment Company F nicknamed 'The Pamlico Artillery'. On March 14 1862 at the Battle of New Bern NC his company defended Fort Ellis on the Neuse River about four miles south of New Bern. The fort contained eight guns. When the union troops broke through the confederate defenses south of Fort Ellis Mayo was ordered to destroy his guns and the ammunition magazine which contained over 3000 pounds of powder and 500 loaded shells so that they would not fall into the hands of the enemy. He sent his men out of danger placed the powder 'trail' to the explosives and lit it himself. It was reported the explosion was the largest and loudest of the entire battle.
Unfortunately Captain Mayo was not far enough away from the magazine when it ignited and he was severally sic injured. It was estimated that he was thrown as far as one hundred feet by the blast. Both of his legs were broken his flesh and eyes badly burned and he was reported as 'killed' by some observers. That night he was found by Major W. B. Lowell of the Connecticut 11th who had him moved through Union lines to a hospital where he was treated by Dr. Whitcomb. As a captured Southerner under the doctors care he slowly recovered and eventually regained his eyesight. Major Lowell visited him frequently wrote letters to his mother read and played the violin for him. After five months he was well enough to travel. General Burnside arranged for a special escort to return Captain James M. Mayo back to his home in Edgecombe County. He re-enlisted in September of 1862 in the North Carolina 4th Calvary North Carolina 59th Regiment as a Field Officer appointed to the rank of Major October 7 1862. His unit first saw service in North Carolina and Southern Virginia. In May of 1863 his unit was placed under the command of Brigadier General Beverly Robertson. At the Battle of Upperville Virginia on June 21 1863 leading a charge against Union Forces which ended in hand-to-hand combat he was captured a second time. He was sent to Old Capital Prison in Washington DC and on August 8 1863 transferred to Johnson Island Military Prison Lake Erie Sandusky Ohio where he remained until February 24 1865 and was then transferred to City Point Virginia for exchange. While a Prisoner of War at Johnson Island he kept a detailed diary of the day-to-day event of prison life. The first of two volumes covering the period from August 7 1863 through March 10 1864 is in the Library of Congress Manuscript Division and is stated to be one of the best accounts of prison life written by either Yankee or Rebel. A second volume covering the period from March 1864 to his release in February 1865 has been lost" "James Micajah Mayo" Memories of Dixie NamSouth Forum accessed July 2021. unknown‎

‎Amsterdam 1665. 4to. Jacobus Venckel Contemporary half vellum marbled sides. With an ornamental woodcut title-vignette. 35 1 blank pp. Rare pamphlet written by an anonymous author discussing the fascinating Battle of Vågen the main port area of neutral Bergen in Norway in August 1665 during the Second Anglo-Dutch War 1665-1667 including its background and aftermath. The Second Anglo-Dutch war was a war at sea caused by conflicts in colonial territories of the Dutch Republic and England. This naval war consisted mainly of protecting their own merchant ships capturing enemy ships and trying to sink mutual warships. The Battle of Vågen was an important naval battle between a rich treasure fleet of the Dutch East India Company VOC and an English flotilla of warships. The present pamphlet gives an account of the events before and after the Battle of Vågen and also in broad lines of the battle itself including all kinds of correspondence and notes from high-ranking figures.Since Tiele attributes this anonymous edition to Venckel it seems likely to be the first edition which Venckel first published anonymously. In any case the present edition is rare. We find only two records of it at auction in 2005 and 2015 the other copies are all held institutionally. A highly interesting pamphlet on one of the most important and fascinating 17th-century sea battles in Dutch naval history and in the history of the Dutch VOC.A few spots the margins trimmed with no loss of text except that the words "Zee-Journael" on the title-page are slightly shaved. Otherwise in good condition.l Knuttel 9103; STCN 863290108 6 copies; Tiele 5266; WorldCat 5 copies in 4 entries; for Venckel: H.F. Wijnman “De Amsterdamsche boekverkooper Jacob Vinckel 1627-1680” in: Vondel-kroniek 5 1934 p. 192. hardcover‎
