‎KOREAN WAR‎

‎Statements by Two American Air Force Officers‎

‎Beijing: Foreign Languages Press 1952. First edition first printing scarce in commerce of this propaganda pamphlet issued a few months before the publication of the controversial "Needham Report" an exposé of American biological warfare in Korea which drew on the explosive testimonies of Enoch Quinn and other POWs. Issued as a supplement to the magazine People's China in May 1952 this pamphlet contains the full confessions of Enoch and Quinn a broadcast by Quinn letters from Enoch to his family and to the Chinese 'volunteer' forces in Korea and a state newspaper editorial warning that "the day of judgement of the American war criminals is near" p. 15. Highly influential at the time the statements of Enoch Quinn and others were subsequently recanted following their release. Their experiences in captivity are now considered an early example of "brainwashing" a term coined in 1950 by Edward Hunter to describe Chinese communist interrogation techniques. Large octavo pamphlet pp. 16. With 2 photographic half-tones 2 facsimiles of handwritten statements and diagrams in text. Wire-stitched as issued front cover lettered in black. Creasing throughout where sometime folded horizontally pages browned light soiling to covers some splitting at spine. Still a very good copy of this exceedingly delicate publication. unknown‎

‎[FIRST GULF WAR] Anonymous Photographer‎

‎Three original large-format black-and-white photographs of a Manhattan anti-war rally ca. 1990‎

‎N.p.; photographer unknown ca 1990. Three large-format black-and-white photographic prints 11" x 14"; very mild creasing at edges still Near Fine. <br /> <br /> Three anonymous but excellent images of a Gulf War-era demonstration probably in Manhattan ca. 1990. The photographer is unidentified but the prints are of professional quality and capture close-up scenes of crowds carrying banners and placards opposing military involvement in the Middle East and directly attacking President George H.W. Bush. One placard calls for Bush's impeachment accusing him of ".creating the Gulf War to Cover Up His High Crimes and Misdemeanors;" another appears to read "Liar Liar We Will Set Your Ass on Fire." <br /> <br /> Several images suggest a New York likely Manhattan locale: one poster connects the marcher to SUNY Old Westbury on Long Island; several placards bear the imprint of the National Coalition to Stop U.S. Intervention in the Middle East including a New York City phone number. <br /> <br /> Though the precise date is obviously uncertain the event captured here is plausibly the October 20 1990 nationwide protest against Operation Desert Storm; rallies took place in several cities simultaneously but New York's was by far the largest as some 15000 protesters gathered at Columbus Circle and marched to Times Square. In general opposition to the first Gulf War was rather muted but significant demostrations did take place in October 1990 and January 1991 as well as a less well-attended counter-protest on the day of the Desert Storm victory parade June 8th 1991. unknown‎

‎KOREAN WAR‎

‎Three Chinese folk handicrafts with propaganda slogans.‎

‎China: c.1950. Resist America Aid Korea Three rare textile handicrafts proclaiming grassroots support for Mao's first war after coming to power. Household production of everyday items with political messages demonstrated both China's self-sufficiency and reduced demands on the country's still-fragile manufacturing sector. The campaign to condemn American aggression in Korea and support the Chinese People's Volunteer Army was the first mass campaign orchestrated by Mao's government following the founding of the People's Republic of China in October 1949. A steady program of activities fostered patriotism consolidated the regime and sent a defiant message to Beijing's enemies in Taipei and Washington. Collection comprising: 410 x 410 mm blue woven cotton wall-hanging the top third backed with white linen with seven hand-stitched pockets each decorated with hand-embroidered multi-coloured silk floral motif upper third embroidered "kang mei yuan chao" Resist America and Aid Korea in cream and pink silk; 95 x 80 mm purse perhaps made from light green winter-issue Chinese People's Volunteer Army clothing machine-woven striped cotton tassel front face with red "kang mei yuan chao" ink stamp; 205 x 160 mm tan cotton drawstring pouch with floral designs and "baowei zuguo" Protect the Motherland lettering tan lace decoration at head lined with machine-woven red cotton lining green drawstring. Located on the James River in Chesterfield County Virginia the canal's 1864-65 construction was initiated by Union forces during the American Civil War to bypass a meander loop of the river around a peninsula known as Farrar's Island which was controlled by Confederate artillery. Miller reproduces this image his Photographic History of the Civil War vol. 5 page 243 noting: "The excavation was forty-three yards wide at the top twenty-seven at the water level . The total excavation was nearly 67000 cubic yards. The greater portion of the digging was done by colored troops who showed the utmost bravery under the constant fire of the Confederate batteries on the river. unknown‎

. First edition; 4to 22 x 17.5cm; 3 folding plates each approx. 35 x 26 cm 2 engraved portraits woodcut initials and decorations throughout the text engraved armorial book-stamp to last leaf verso displaying motto 'light in darKines lumiere dans les tenebres'; one integral blank leaf title page stained and browned some marginal staining and browning throughout creasing to corners one small wormhole affecting 4 leaves; side-stitched contemporary marbled wrappers worn and soiled with extensive loss to upper wrapper; 14 39 1pp.<br /> A curious and rare anonymous English Civil War pamphlet published in Paris by Michel Mettaier sometimes spelt Mettayer in 1648 following the capture of Charles I by parliamentarian forces the previous year. <br /><br />The first part of the work consists of three large folding plates depicting the House of Lords the House of Commons and the Convocation of Canterbury with explicatory notes explaining the history and function of these bodies in the English parliamentary system. The latter part of the book contains an original address to Henrietta Maria Queen of England illustrated with facing engraved portraits of the Queen and the Prince of Wales and signed simply 'le bon et loyal svbiet'. It introduces a short statement in both English and French allegedly translated from an original Latin version which purports to be the words of Liudolf c.930-957 an Ottonian Duke of Swabia and grandson of the German king Henry the Fowler 919-936. The text claims that Liudolf did not die in 957 but rather feigned his death to take exile in Mantua in the hope that his descendants would one day regain his power and prestige. The tale was likely intended by the royalist author to offer hope to the exiled queen and her son who were soon to become widow and orphan to the executed king.<br /><br />Rare. We can trace only 5 copies in institutional collections worldwide: 3 in the UK British Library Durham University and the University of Leeds and 2 in France BnF and Bibliotheque Saint-Genevieve.<br /> Isle Nostre Dame, Paris, chez Michel Mettaier, imprimeur ordinaire du Roy, 1648. unknown‎

‎[First World War]. DIXON, William Forrest‎

‎A series of four postcard-format gelatin silver photographs of 3705 Private William Forrest Dixon of the 4th Pioneer Battalion‎

‎Very Good. Backing cards generally slightly tanned; a couple of tiny indentations; overall in excellent condition. Two of the portraits are dated France July 1917 and London October 1918; one of the others is credited to an English photographer; the fourth one was almost certainly taken while Dixon was on active service. They give a graphic portrayal of the impact the war has had on him. This is reinforced by the lengthy message of 26 July 1917 written on one verso; it commences 'Just a Photo to let you see I am still alive & ducking. We are out for a spell once again getting ready for another stunt I guess'. 4 items. unknown‎

In the theatrical profession he is known under the name of Paul Haakon. It is very well known that he is one of the best dancers in the world. He gave up his dancing recently to become a flying instructor purely to serve his country. ‎(Seven Years' War) Johnson, William‎

‎Lisboa: Domingos Rodrigues 1757. First edition. Woodcut vignette to title-page. 7 blank pp. Small 4to. A very good copy some very faint dampstaining. First edition. Woodcut vignette to title-page. 7 blank pp. Small 4to. A Portuguese translation of General William Johnson's "Letter to the Governours of the Several Colonies who raised Troops on the Present Expedition" signed in the text "Wilhelmo Gonson." <br /> <br /> Not long after the commencement of the Seven Years' War Johnson was appointed British agent to the Iroquois. On 28 August 1755 he renamed Lac Saint Sacrement Lake George in honor of the British monarch and proceeded north as part of a four-pronged attack on the French specifically to capture the French-held Fort St. Frédéric at Crown Point. <br /> <br /> "It was not the greatest battle of the French and Indian War but it came when a victory was needed and the results were momentous. It retrieved both the glory and morale so badly depleted when Braddock fell at the forks of the Ohio the previous July. It blunted a French drive which menaced Albany and the northern frontier set up a new English outpost in that area and the capture of a distinguished French general Dieskau was triumph for the victors and humiliation for the enemy" Hamilton.<br /> <br /> The publication of this letter was of course a remarkable source of propaganda for the English and boosted Johnson's career signficantly. The letter was reprinted in London an engraved plan of the battle was produced as well as portrait. This Lisbon printing is however very rare and little known. It's not in COPAC there wasn't a copy in the Streeter Sale. In fact the last copy on the market we can find was in 1928. Not in Church; Sabin 38661; Maggs "Biblioteca Americana" IV 2998; Milton W. Hamilton "Battle Report: Genreal William Johnson's Letter to the Governors Lake George September 9-10 1755" in Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society April 1964 pp 19-36 [Domingos Rodrigues] unknown‎

‎(Mexican American War) Farnum, John Egbert‎

‎Autograph Document Signed "J. Egbert Farnum late of the U.S.A." Being a hand-written poem relating an incident of the Mexican American War‎

‎New York City 1854. 3 pp. pen and ink on bifolium. 8vo. Old folds very minor stain to edge of bottom right corner on first page not affecting text else fine. 3 pp. pen and ink on bifolium. 8vo. Romantic in a style befitting the era Farnum offers a graphic account of a a heart-wrenching scene from battle which he describes as "carelessly written but respectfully dedicated to Maria L. Green." Reading in part:<br /> <br /> ."Where hot and fiercest raged the fight<br /> Where lead came down like rain ~<br /> Where bursting bombshells feeble light<br /> Discovered heaps of slain ~<br /> I saw a little laughing sprite<br /> A joyous little dear<br /> Leading a pet lamb through the fight<br /> Without one though of fear. ~"<br /> <br /> Soldier express rider mercenary adventurer and notoriously hard drinking brawler John Egbert Farnum's 1824-1870 military career began in the Mexican American War where he served as a sgt. major in the 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. He would go on to see action in the Crimean War and the jungles of Cuba and Nicaragua before enlisting as a major in the Union Army in 1861. Farnum fought gallantly in some of the bloodiest engagements of the American Civil War including Fredericksburg Chancellorsville and Gettysburg before his wounds forced him to retire from active service Farnum was shot 19 times and suffered two saber wounds. He was promoted to brevet brigadier general for his meritorious service. <br /> Despite his incredible war record Farnum is more often remembered for his involvement in the infamous voyage of the schooner Wanderer. Built as a luxury racing yacht the Wanderer was purchased by William Corrie in 1858 with the assistance of southern "fire eater" Charles A.L. Lamar. Corrie had the schooner refitted as a slave ship and along with Farnum who later claimed ignorance of the scheme and the ship's crew sailed to Africa and loaded 407 slaves aboard. They arrived off Jeckyll Island Georgia in November and were arrested for violating the 1807 Act Prohibiting the Importation of Slaves. Farnum was charged with piracy. He escaped jail but was recaptured and after a lengthy and sensational trial in which the President of the United States James Buchanan came to his defense he was acquitted of all charges. unknown‎
