Ex-libris stamps of Army War Library with appropriate LC duplicate/release stamp. Compiled by the Military Information Division Office of the Adjutant General U.S. War Department. The Greco-Turkish War of 1897 or the Ottoman-Greek War of 1897 also called the Thirty Days' War and known in Greece as the Black '97 or the Unfortunate War was a war fought between the Kingdom of Greece and the Ottoman Empire. Its immediate cause involved the status of the Ottoman province of Crete whose Greek-majority population had long desired union with Greece. Despite the Ottoman victory on the field an autonomous Cretan State under Ottoman suzerainty was established the following year as a result of the intervention of the Great Powers after the war with Prince George of Greece and Denmark as its first High Commissioner. As this volume was published the United States was on the verge of a new willingness to assert its perceived interests in international affairs by military means if necessary. This volume is now quite scarce. There are several institutional holdings mostly in places where one would expect an official U.S. government document from 1897 to have gone as a matter of course. See OCLC Number 9929088. Current locations include the Army War College; indeed the present copy must have been a duplicate. This publication is now quite scarce in commerce. . Baker, Newton D ; [Secretary of War, Chairman of the Commission] ; WilliamW Harts
Report of the Arlington Memorial Amphitheater Commission
Washington: U. S. Government Printing Office. 1923. First Edition. Flexible Leather. Very Good. Royal Octavo; 75 plates pages; Contents clean and secure in custom flexible black leather binding chipped away at spine ends gilt lettering and border at front cover and original owner's name in gilt "WM. W. Harts" -- Colonel later General William Wright Harts 1866-1961 was Executive Officer of the Commission; he opened the bidding process for construction of the Amphiteater at the office of the Superintendant of Public Buildings and Grounds Washington D.C. on December 7 1914. Present was Ivory G. Kimball of the Commission and a large number of bidders. After many meetings and proposals the contract for construction was awarded to George A. Fuller Company who broke ground on March 1 1915 and it was dedicated in May 1920. Memorial Amphitheater is an outdoor amphitheater exhibit hall and nonsectarian chapel located in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington County Virginia in the United States. In the center of its eastern steps is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier dedicated in 1921. It has served as the site for numerous Veterans Day and Memorial Day events as well as for memorial services and funerals for many individuals. PROVENANCE: William Wright Harts 1866 – 1961 was a U. S. Army officer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He served in several conflicts and capacities including in World War I and he received the Army Distinguished Service Medal among other awards. Between 1884 and 1885 he attended Princeton University before entering the United States Military Academy graduating from the latter in 1889. Harts served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers working on numerous construction projects. He participated in the Philippine Insurrection and served in the Philippines from 1903 to 1907. In addition to the Amphiteater project from 1913 to 1917 Harts served as the chief construction engineer of the Lincoln Memorial. In 1917 he was the commandant of the Engineer School. He also served as an aide of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson from 1913 to 1918. Harts served in France during World War I initially commanding the Sixth Engineer Regiment. He was promoted to the rank of brigadier general on December 17 1917 and he commanded a provisional brigade with the British Fifth Army. Harts then commanded the District of Paris from 1918 to 1919 and he received the Army Distinguished Service Medal. Harts graduated from the United States Army Field Artillery School in 1923 and from the Coast Artillery School in 1924. His promotion to brigadier general was made permanent in 1924. He commanded the Panama Canal's artillery defense from 1924 to 1926 and he served as the U.S. military attache in Paris from 1926 to 1930. Harts retired from the U.S. Army in 1930. This copy has significant resonance as having been Harts' -- who was executive superintendant of the construction of two of the main features of the important axis which formed the sight-lines of a major element of the MacMillan Comision's vision for the development of Washington DC as a monumental Capital city. We are speaking of course of the axis between Arlington House -- whose ample property became the hallowed ground of Arlington National Cemetery; the Cemetery's marble Memorial Amphitheater the central focus of this volume; the Lincoln Memorial on the Washington side of the Potomac river construction for which was also overseen by W. H. Harts -- and the future Memorial Bridge -- which was designed to link these features across the river. History notes that several previous designs for this bridge were considered over many decades. After circumstances and choices were made to reject odd idiosyncratic and oversized versions of the bridge the eventual Memorial Bridge executed in white marble like the other structures in this vewscape was purposely kept low to the river so as to maintain the sweeping views liking these structures. It cannot escape notice by anyone who might even consider acquiring this volume and what it represents that the whole matter is very much a current subject of debate -- as there is a current proposal for building a new 250-foot tall structure which would alter the view and this line of sight forever. .
