A masterclass in inter-arms co-operation" - the German assault on the Toboly Bridgehead Remarkable visual record that documents with a combination of forensic exactitude and stark realism the capture of the Toboly bridgehead on the Stokhid River Ukraine in April 1917 significant for the innovative fire plan utilized by Colonel George Bruchmuller "an outstanding artillery co-ordinator" Clarke p. 50. Rare: we have not been able to trace another copy institutionally or on auction records. The Stokhid River was the demarcation line between the Austro-Hungarian and Russian fronts. "The attack on the Toboly bridgehead by the 1 st Landwehr Div of the German Army in March 1917 was supported by 300 pieces of artillery and 100 Minenwerfers short range mortars; by comparison the average German division at Verdun was supported by 94 guns and 60 trench mortars. Barrages were also shorter and more intense - 5hrs 15min at Toboly compared to the 24 hours at Verdun. In a complex fire plan field guns field howitzers and Minenwerfers delivered the rolling barrage directly to the front of the advancing infantry. Heavy guns and howitzers provided both CB Counter Battery fire on the Russian artillery and a box barrage to seal off the objectives from reinforcement. The keys to Col Bruchmuller's success were the effective use of neutralization; surprise; inter-arms co-operation; and massed firepower under centralized command. When assessing Bruchmuller's reputation it is important to stress that he was not doing much that the Allied armies were not already doing on the Western Front. In the East however it was revolutionary and his efforts to ensure that the infantry understood how to make the most of the support they would receive were a masterclass in inter-arms co-operation" ibid. pp. 50-1. Gas was also a key factor in the German attack as was the use of portable flamethrowers in particular by companies of the Garde-Reserve-Pionier-Regiment "whose two-man flamethrower teams were attached to units as necessary to provide specialist fire support for specific operations" Stone p. 432. Of the images assembled here 2 show mines being exploded while others taken after the battle show blast craters; a further 8 aerial photographs with contemporary annotations on the back were taken by artillery reconnaissance unit Flieger-Abteilungen A 283 which was based at Brest-Litovsk. Others show the effect of Minenwerfer fire on barbed wire entanglements and trenches; some 25 prints show Russian dead killed by mortars Minenwerfer gas and flamethrowers; 10 show Russian armaments and trench systems German soldiers posing with battlefield "loot" hand grenades and ammunition and captured artillery; the concluding 10 images particularly well-detailed are of Russian prisoners of which the Germans claimed there were 10000. A stub-mounted printed slip notes that 4 aerial photographs were taken from a height of 100 feet by Lt. Ferdinand Schmid of Fliegerkompagnie 27 of the Austro-Hungarian air force fatally wounded over Toboly. This also gives an explanation of the plates numbered 578-81 which show the battlefield and German infantry advancing; a glassine overlay shows how the plates should be arranged to give a wider perspective of the area of operations. Provenance: although unmarked as such from the library of Reinhart Freiherr Bachofen von Echt 1877-1947 author of several works on hunting; he served with the Austro-Hungarian army on the Eastern Front during the First World War. Produced in very small numbers and printed "in the field" this outstanding survival serves as an important primary source and a doleful testament to a signal German victory on the Eastern Front. Printed title page 84 original albumen prints varying between 120 x 165 mm and 60 x 90 mm mounted on paper leaves showing scenes at the Front a number with pencilled annotations on verso; another print reproducing a Russian propaganda card "Willst du Frieden haben ! This is a Near Fine tight set with light wear to the extremities in the publisher's full brown calf leather binding with black leather tips. There is slight moisture bleed in Volume 1. The spine title is red leather and the volume label is black. The rear hinges of each volume have been reinforced. This set includes the facsimile letter of Grant's original terms for Lee's surrender laid in. Mark Twain was the publisher of this monumental memoir as well as its editor and proof reader. Twain was extremely fond of and a close friend of Grant and encouraged the President and war hero to write his memoirs. Grant was dying of throat cancer but completed his two volume opus dictating the second volume to a secretary. Twain noted in a letter to his daughter that the manuscript was not even set yet and 20000 sets had been ordered from only two states. "Wait till you hear from the other 37." Grant finished his memoirs on July 18 1885 and died five days later on July 23rd. Following his death advance orders of the memoirs reached 300000 sets realizing close to $450000 for his family which was otherwise penniless. In a 1992 New York Times book review General Schwarzkopf is quoted as using Grant's two-volume work as his model calling it the finest military history of the Civil War. Charles L. First edition 1st printing of this scarce illustrated pro-China work documenting the opening campaigns by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force and Navy during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Hostilities had increased throughout the 1930s following the first Sino-Japanese War in which Japan had conquered and absorbed Manchuria into the Japanese Empire. Chiang Kai-shek’s nationalist forces joined with the warlords of Hunan and Szechwan provinces to fight the Japanese after a number of provocations in the summer of 1937. Chiang Kai-shek believed that by initially attacking and bombing Japanese naval installations and troops in and around Shanghai he would force the foreign powers to ally with China to fight against Japan to protect their enormous investments in southern China. The Nationalist Chinese armies held out for three months against ferocious bombardment and shelling by the Japanese from planes based in Taiwan and ships on the Huangpu River inflicting huge numbers of casualties on the Chinese and eventually forcing the Chinese to retreat from Shanghai to Nanking with Japanese reinforcements constantly decimating them. These images show victims at the South Station bombings caring for Chinese wounded Chinese women training as soldiers and nurses in the aftermath of the North Station Area shelling and bombing bitter retreat by Chinese soldiers the advances and marching of Japanese forces in Shanghai and beyond. ‎New York:: Knopf 1977. First Printing of the First Edition. A Near Fine tight copy with spots to the margins of three pages in a Fine bright unclipped dust jacket. A nice copy of this classic of reportage on the war. No names or marks to the book or text. Michael Herr went to Vietnam in 1967 virtually unknown as a writer but armed with press credentials for Esquire Magazine he quickly rose above the crowd of writers covering the war with his brilliant unorthodox prose. Herr's six extended pieces in this collection capture the war and its participants like no other writer except for Tim O'Brian in his equally masterful "The Things They Carried." Herr was one of the original Gonzo New Journalists in the company of such literary trail-cutters as Hunter S Thompson Tom Wolfe Truman Capote and Gay Talese. Herr when not hunkered down in the battle for Khe Sanh spent many off hours in the company of three other flamboyant correspondents: Tim Page Dana Stone and Sean Flynn. Page would survive his experience in Vietnam but Stone and Flynn would disappear their bodies never found. Herr found himself in as much danger as the soldiers he set out to document in a war that was more disillusioning than understandable. "Dispatches" is as good as war writing gets; Herr puts the reader right where he is so that his experience becomes yours which is about as close as most people would ever want to get to the real thing. First edition of this scarce Democratic Party Copperhead influenced presidential campaign pamphlet perpetuating the complaints of mistreatment by Democratic candidate and former Civil War general George B. McClellan. This piece appears to have been published at the height of the Cold Harbor campaigns by the Union Army under command of Lieut. General Ulysses S. Grant which were suffering heavy casualties and significant blows to northern morale during the Civil War. The opening letter from President Lincoln denotes his complete confidence in Grant for the 1864 campaigns. In contrast McClellan has presented all of the attempts by Lincoln to encourage move troops and override orders from General as commander of the Union Army. In addition the Democratic ticket under McClellan wanted to negotiate with the Confederates immediately and place the agreement before the voters. One colour lithograph reverse mounted on glass sized 8 x 13 in. fitted with brass chain frame and hanger possibly used as chimney flue cover minor edgewear to glass minor soiling to chain very minor spotting dustsoiling still an excellent piece w/ bright strong image. The USS Maine ACR-1 was launched in 1895 and was an armored cruiser together with her near-sister ship USS Texas with two gun turrets staggered en echelon rather than on the centerline with fore gun sponsoned out on the starboard side of the ship. As she took seven years to build she was out of date upon launching. She sailed with the North Atlantic Squadron operating from Norfolkd along the East Coast and the Caribbean. Feb. 15 1898 an explosion obliterated the forward third of the ship killing 260 sailors and the Spanish-American War began in April 1898 two months later. Atwood b. 1844 was a Massachusetts nautical maritime painter who operated studios in Boston and Maine and painted the original for Brigadier General H.A. Wheeler in 1895 and in 1898 the colour print was issued as a patriotic souvenir. The P-51B/C the Mustang Mk III was outfitted with a Rolls Royce Merlin engine allowing it to achieve remarkable performance at altitudes above 15000 feet and beginning in late 1943 were the key bomber escort fighters for the US Army Air Force 8th Air Force in raids over Germany. This flight manual prepared for Mustang pilots and ground personnel contained general descriptions of the airplane sequence of operations to be followed operation of guns bombs and radio emergency operating instructions and charts designed for long-range flying and auxiliary fuel tanks. Three-quarter pink silk moire over simulated crocodile textured burgundy-coloured cloth gilt lettering stamped front cover suede paper pastedowns NF copy. First edition of this nicely executed photo souvenir commemorating the end of World War I and the signing of the Armistice by representatives of the German High Command directed by Marshall Foch Supreme Commander of the the Allied Forces. The photographs show the Glade of the Armistice monument designed by Marcel Mages located in the forest of Compiegne and Marshal Foch’s railroad car. The Compagnie Internationale Wagon Lits Company Car No. 2419D was returned to service as a dining car after World War I from 1921-1927 and then brought back to the Glade on Armistice Day 1927 when it was installed in the Memorial. The Memorial was built by the City of Compiegne with funds from Henry Fleming. After France’s surrender to Nazi Germany in 1940 the railcar was seized by the Nazis and destroyed by SS Troops in Crawinkel Thuringia in 1945 where it was buried. John Fox Brigade Veterinary Officer signed by him on the first blank together with seven other senior officers including Brig.-General Heyworth Commanding XXth Brigade. A few pencilled annotations to the portrait plates noting wounded or killed. The text is essentially a calendar for 1914 with brief notes as to significant events relating to the Brigade through the year accompanied by snippets of text humorous and factual. Landscape small folio 186 x 245 mm. Illustrated throughout with numerous portraits of officers from photographs colour uniform studies and humorous sketches from the Front. Contemporary black diced skiver title and owner's name gilt to the front board pale grey-green pastedowns original dun wrappers bound in title and brigade badge embossed and gilt to the front wrap silk ribbon in brigade colours attached. Brigade office and censor stamps applied to the verso of the front wrap. A little rubbed and bumped both boards with minor creases wrappers browned and slightly stained first few leaves with some minor finger-soiling overall very good. hardcover‎
